Ahead of Move to Capital, US Embassy Adopts Jerusalem Twitter Handle

Written by Yona Schnitzer/TPS on May 07, 2018

The U.S Embassy in Israel has changed its Twitter handle from U.S Embassy Tel Aviv to U.S Embassy Jerusalem. The change came exactly one week before the Embassy is set to officially move to Jerusalem on May 14th, the day after Jerusalem Day – the anniversary of Israel’s victory in the Six Day War and the unification of the city.

The embassy’s first Tweets under the new handle were a photo and video of Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat taking part in the hanging of new street signs directing to the soon-to-be-embassy.

Barkat also posted the photo on his Facebook page, with a caption reading: “This is not a dream – it’s reality! This morning, I am proud and excited to install the first signs for the US embassy, which will open next week in Jerusalem. I thank President Trump for making this historic moment come to fruition. Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people – and the world is beginning to recognize this fact. Happy Jerusalem Day!”
