“Governments willing to speak out and take action against the persistent hatred of Jews are essential to effectively combating anti-Semitism,” said American Jewish Committee CEO David Harris.

(December 19, 2019 / JNS) Cyprus has adopted the widely accepted definition of anti-Semitism by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

The IHRA definition says: “Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

The American Jewish Committee applauded the Wednesday move.

“Governments willing to speak out and take action against the persistent hatred of Jews are essential to effectively combating anti-Semitism,” said AJC CEO David Harris in a statement.Subscribe to The JNS Daily Syndicate by email and never miss our top stories

“Unity on defining anti-Semitism is a crucial first step, even as more substantive action is needed to develop and implement concrete action plans,” he continued. “With Cyprus joining the growing list of European and other nations endorsing the IHRA working definition, the battle against rising anti-Semitism is strengthened.”
