The IDF said it had found two improvised explosive devices where three Palestinians had infiltrated the Gaza border fence on Sunday afternoon.
At around 5 p.m. three Palestinians were reported to have crossed the border fence between Gaza and Israel before heading back into the Strip. Palestinian sources reported that the IDF fired tank shells in the direction of the suspects, but that no casualties were reported. The IDF confirmed it had opened fire and said that no fire had been directed at Israeli forces.
An army spokesman said after the IEDS were discovered that the IDF “views with gravity any attempt to sabotage security infrastructure and will not allow the border region to become a combat zone.”
“The Hamas terrorist organization bears full responsibility for all events originating from the Gaza Strip and their consequences,” the spokesman added.
Sunday’s event follows numerous attempts to sabotage the fence and place explosive devices in recent weeks, which have been stepped up amid mass demonstrations along the Gaza border over the past two Fridays. Some 29 Palestinians have been killed in the protests.
