El Al is changing its practice of beginning onboarding procedures for its summer motzoei Shabbos flights from London, to stop the airline from engaging in activities during Shabbos, according to Channel 12.
Previously, check-ins and other procedures were carried out while it was still Shabbos, r”l.
The current majority shareholder, Eli Rozenberg, is an Orthodox Jew. He took the position in 2020 amid turmoil in the company during the pandemic.
El Al is offering to refund travelers’ tickets, or rebook them for Fridays.
Around 12 Israel-bound flights leave London every motzoei Shabbos.
“Due to a change in Shabbat departure times in London, with the transition to summer time, and due to the restrictions on departures from Heathrow Airport, we had to make adjustments to the flight schedule,” El Al said in a statement. “We apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers due to this change.”
