WASHINGTON (VINNews) — After accusations have been swirling for quite some time that Rep. Ilhan Omar legally married her brother in order for him to obtain a green card, the FBI has now opened an investigation into the matter, according to a report by The Post.
According to a source with knowledge of the event, two FBI agents held a meeting for several hours with an individual who handed over a trove of documents relating to Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
At this meeting, the agents discussed the allegation that Omar married Elmi, a British citizen who is suspected of being her brother, in order for him to obtain a green card and study in America.
While the agents would not commit to launching an official investigation into Omar, they did say they would share the information with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the US Department of Education.
The result of this review can have real consequences for Omar. If found guilty of marrying her brother, she can be charged with marriage fraud — a felony offense punishable with a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of up to $250,000.
Omar’s office would not respond with any official comment, but Omar herself has denied the allegations in the past, calling them “disgusting lies.”
Allegations that Elmi is Omar’s brother first emerged in a since-deleted post to the Somali Spot message board by a user named Abdi Johnson in 2016. Conservative blogger Scott Johnson picked up the claims on his Power Line blog, and they were later repeated by President Trump.
