IDF troops fired at armed suspects attempting to cross the Alpha Line into Israel from Syria, the military said in a statement late Sunday night.

“Our troops spotted armed suspects crossing the Alpha Line into #Israel near the #Syrian border fence in the Golan Heights. In response, our troops fired toward them,” an IDF spokesman tweeted.

The Alpha Line is the western line of the buffer zone between Israel and Syria formed as part of the Disengagement Agreement between the countries following the 1972 Yom Kippur War.

The suspects were spotted returning back into Syria.

The incident took place in an area that has been under control of the Bashar Assad regime throughout the civil war in the country.

“We will continue to operate against violations of Israeli sovereignty & the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement,” the IDF said.
