Israel Protests to UN as Hezbollah Uses Environmental NGO to Spy on Border

Written by TPS on June 22, 2017

Israel has protested to the United Nations Security Council after IDF intelligence revealed that the Lebanese Shi’ite group Hezbollah has established a series of outposts along the border under the guise of an environmental organization.

A video released by the IDF showed armed Hezbollah fighters manning some 15 observation posts along the border, supposedly run by the Lebanese environmental group ‘Green Without Borders.’ Hezbollah has been using the outposts to observe IDF movements along the border.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon wrote in a letter to the Security Council that the NGO is funded by and operates on behalf of Hezbollah. Included in the Ambassador’s letter to the Council were photographs of the observation posts and their locations.

“The well-documented proof of Hezbollah’s dangerous provocation verifies that Hezbollah conducts reconnaissance activity near the Blue Line and disguises it as civilian activity, in clear violation of UNSC resolutions 1701 and 1559,” Danon wrote.

“Hezbollah’s continued military buildup and destabilizing activities in southern Lebanon have serious repercussions on both regional stability and the ability of the Lebanese government to effectively control its country.  The international community cannot continue to turn a blind eye to Hezbollah’s flagrant violations of UNSC resolutions,” he added, before calling on the Security Council to demand that the government of Lebanon dismantle the observation posts immediately.

The IDF’s head of Military Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Hertzi Halevy said meanwhile Thursday the annual Herzliya policy conference that Hezbollah was blatantly violating  Resolution 1701.

“We call on UNIFIL to undertake its responsibilities – not only in keeping the peace, but in removing the possibility of war,” Halevy said.
