Israeli Arrested for False Bomb Threats Around the World

Written by Ilana Messika/TPS on March 23, 2017

Israel Police arrested on  a 19-year-old resident of Ashkelon Thursday on suspicions of extortion, threatening violence and making false bomb threats to Jewish institutions around the world.

The investigation, which lasted for months, dealt with institutions in several countries receiving “threatening calls” about explosives allegedly placed in public places, causing panic and disruption that resulted in significant economic damage. The calls also led to the urgent evacuation of several sites and institutions around the world, and even the grounding of Delta Airlines.

In the last example, one flight was forced to execute an emergency landing following the threat.

The international operation, in cooperation with FBI agents and other police organizations from around the world, used cyber technologies to research and analyze the collection of incidents at the National Cyber ??Center of the Israel Police. Investigators eventually identified the suspect despite the use of advanced cellular camouflage technologies.

This arrest follows reports of alarming numbers of bomb threats to Jewish organizations in the United States. In the first three months of 2017, Jewish community centers across the country have received at least 90 threats .

The police seized all technological means in the suspect’s possession, before he was brought in for questioning. He is scheduled to appear before the Rishon LeZion Magistrates Court Thursday afternoon. It remains unclear whether the suspect acted alone or if he had accomplices.
