L.A.P.D Invites Orthodox Jews to Join as Reserve Officers

Reserve-LetterThe Los Angeles Police Department is starting to invite Orthodox Jewish community members who observe shabbos as reserve officers, becoming a historic first for wider inclusion of Orthodox Jews in the police force.

“The Reserve Corps realizes that the community is the department’s greatest resource for crime abatement. In an ongoing effort to recruit all, the reserve academy training will be modified to allow for the observance of the Sabbath and Jewish holidays,” the police said in a statement.

Speakers at Monday’s event included Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck, Los Angeles Police Department Commander Patrick Smith, Rabbi Shmuel Newman, and Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles Ivan Wolkind.
