Three diplomats cited as saying France, Belgium, Ireland and Luxembourg seek discussions on the matter

France is seeking a harsh EU response to any Israeli efforts to apply its sovereignty to West Bank areas, Reuters reported Monday, citing diplomatic sources.

According to the agency, France wants to bring the matter up during a meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers on Friday, calling on other member states to warn Israel of the consequences of unilateral action.

Also seeking to put some sort of response on the event’s agenda are Belgium, Ireland and Luxembourg, three diplomats told the agency.

They did not specify what measures could be on the table, the report notes, and a nod from all 27 members would be required for any joint action to be taken.

Furthermore, even work laying out the foundations of any such endeavor could be blocked by EU states seen as following a more pro-Israeli policy.

In February, EU foreign affairs tzar Josep Borrell said that the Middle East peace plan unveiled by the Trump administration and working as a key engine behind the initiative as failing to honor the “internationally-agreed parameters” for resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict.

However, the bloc stopped short of any sort of collective action or statement on the matter, reportedly due to pushback from Hungary.
