Zomick’s Bakery Issues Open Letter to Customers on Food Safety

Zomick’s Bakery released an “Open Letter” to its customers on allegations published last week in a blog that its bakery had multiple issues with food safety. In its statement Zomick’s noted: “ Zomick’s Bakery is a clean and pristine bakery as any visitor can plainly see, and practices the highest standards in food safety.” While admitting that it had some violations in the past, it said that it dealt with all of them and that it “passed many other inspections both by the State and independent auditors and the authorities never considered the bakery a public safety hazard.”

 The Zomick’s statement further explained that its bakery is a 28,000 square foot facility with many areas for shipping, receiving, and inventory. Most of these violations, it said, were minor infractions in those areas and were immediately dealt with. “Never were these found in the actual production of the baked goods. In fact, all products are routinely tested and there was never even one issue!”

 Zomick’s revealed that in the past year, it instituted even tougher and more rigorous enforcement of food safety. “In fact, in February 2013, Zomick’s passed the inspection by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. In June, 2012, we voluntarily brought in inspectors from the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), a not for profit accredited third party certification agency that is widely respected by major retailers and state and federal authorities. Their review of our procedures to safeguard public health and safety passed with flying colors. Thus, the stories that appeared this week are certainly not News!”

 Zomick’s also announced that they have taken yet additional measures to assure that there is not even a perception of the bakery being nothing less than a clean and pristine environment. It hired in an in-house senior food safety expert to regularly monitor protocols and assure the utmost cleanliness of the bakery, retained a noted food safety expert as a consultant to assist its in-house staff, invited yet another 3rd party audit to further reassure the public, and opened the bakery to media and others who wish to see for themselves “our exceptionally clean bakery.”

In its closing statement, the management of Zomick’s appealed to its customers “not to fall for a malicious campaign of falsehoods and out of proportion allegations that are designed to harm us. And please continue to enjoy Zomick’s quality products just as you have for almost 4 decades.”

 Zomick’s kosher products are sold at various bakeries and major chains throughout the country. The bakery was founded in  1966 and its products have received raving reviews from food critics.
