JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Israel issued Monday a travel warning to Israelis seeking to go to Turkey, a popular tourist destination.

“For several weeks now, and even more so since Iran blamed Israel for the death of the Revolutionary Guards officer last week, there has been growing concern in the defense establishment about Iranian attempts to harm Israeli targets around the world,” a statement from the National Security Council said, adding that “The security establishment is sharpening the travel warning to Turkey and wish to stress that it is a high-risk country for Israelis at the current time.”

The warning was also extended to all countries bordering with Iran.

The Yisrael Hayom newspaper reported that Israeli tourists in Turkey received anonymous telephone calls in which they were warned in Hebrew not to be too noticeable, not to use public transport and to be vigilant at all times due to a “concrete” threat to harm Israelis in Turkey.

A US official publicized last week that Israel was behind the targeted killing of Col. Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, who was shot five times in his car  by two unidentified gunmen on motorbikes in the middle of Tehran. Israel fears that Iran plans a response to the high-profile assassination.

Israel, which has not officially commented on the incident, has reportedly also raised the security alert level at its embassies and consulates around the world, fearing a retaliatory Iranian attack.

The Turkish travel warning comes just a day before Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu is due to land in Israel. During his visit, Çavu?o?lu will meet Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid) and senior Foreign Ministry officials, as well as Palestinian Authority officials.

On Wednesday, he will meet Tourism Minister Yoel Razvozov (Yesh Atid), and the two are expected to discuss cooperation in the tourism industry, and especially the creation of “regional packages” and mutual marketing.
