Cyprus has successfully foiled an attempted terrorist attack on its soil, targeting Israeli citizens, according to reports from Cypriot media. The assailants, who have been linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, were apprehended following a meticulously executed operation by Cypriot intelligence, which collaborated closely with Western intelligence agencies, including those of the United States and Israel.
Over the past few months, Cyprus’s state intelligence service diligently tracked the movements of the Iranian terror cell, leading to the disruption of their planned attack. By consistently monitoring the main suspect, authorities were able to prevent the assault. Although the suspect managed to evade capture, investigators discovered incriminating equipment that he may have intended to use in executing the attack. Depending on the progress of the ongoing investigation, Cyprus is contemplating the issuance of an international arrest warrant for the primary suspect.
According to media reports, the terrorists’ target list included, among others, an Israeli businessman and a local Chabad house.
This particular terrorist cell operated as a widespread network, utilizing the Turkish-controlled region of Northern Cyprus as its base of operations before dispatching operatives to Greek Cyprus. Notably, two years ago, Cypriot authorities apprehended an individual of Azeri citizenship holding a Russian passport. This individual, acting on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, was also involved in planning terrorist acts targeting Israeli interests.
The thwarting of this recent terrorist plot highlights the diligent efforts of Cypriot intelligence in collaboration with Western allies to ensure the safety and security of their citizens. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by international terrorist organizations and the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among nations to counter such acts of violence.
