The IDF revealed Tuesday intricate specifics about Hamas’s elaborate underground headquarters, referred to as the “pit,” situated beneath Gaza City.
The operation to seize this facility, an extension of Hamas’s military command area, involved high-powered Units 401 and Givati troops due to its expected difficulty. However, officials were taken aback by its sophistication, comparable to the IDF’s underground facility at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv.
Of particular surprise was a specialized shaft equipped with an elevator reaching an unprecedented depth of 30 meters, surpassing the typical depth of Hamas tunnels. This subterranean complex included advanced features like air conditioning, oxygen supply, and notably advanced communication systems, suggesting a highly developed command center.
Within this tunnel, signs indicated that high-ranking Hamas officials may have hidden there, including speculations about the potential presence of Gaza Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar and Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.
IDF Division 162 Commander Brig. Gen. Itzik Cohen highlighted the strategic significance of dismantling such Hamas infrastructure, emphasizing its potential impact on destabilizing the military and governance capabilities of Hamas in Gaza City.
Cohen further emphasized the comprehensive approach adopted by the IDF, stating, “Since the beginning of the incursion, our forces have systematically targeted key Hamas infrastructure. Over 1,000 Hamas terrorists have been neutralized, and rocket attacks from northern Gaza have decreased by approximately 80%.”
