IDF to Honor Four Female Soldiers from Operation Protective Edge

The IDF will award 53 soldiers, among them 4 women, military decorations for their service during this past summer’s Operation “Protective Edge”. Among the women, one received a citation (talash), and three others received medals of appreciation from the Israeli Southern Command.

Lieutenant Dr. Regina Pekman, a medical officer in the 188 Brigade, received a citation for her actions on July 31, 2014. Lieutenant Dr. Pekman arrived to a deployment area in Israel, which was bombarded by mortar shells. She commanded the evacuation of injured IDF soldiers, while providing medical treatment for many other Israeli soldiers which were wounded. All through the incident, “Red Color” alarms were heard, and the entire area was under rocket fire.

Sergeant Ronnie Jackson, an electronic observation handler, from the observation unit in the “Nesher” battalion, received an award for her actions on July 17, 2014. Sergeant Jackson identified a group of 13 Hamas terrorists which infiltrated Israel through a terror tunnel, near Kibutz “Sufa”, on the Israeli-Gaza border. Jackson reported her findings to her commanders, which led to a successful Israeli response that prevented the terrorists from killing Israeli soldiers and civilians.

Corporal Noa Teitel, an electronic observation handler from the Israeli Navy, was honored for her actions on July 8th, 2014. Corporal Teitel identified a group of Hamas terrorists which infiltrated Israel by sea, near Kibutz Zikim, in the “Hof Ashkelon Regional Council”. Corporal Teitel informed her commanders, and participated in the coordination between Navy and Infantry forces that arrived on the scene. Corporal Teitel’s actions enabled Israeli forces to stop the maritime terror attack.

Sergeant Lihi Meir, an electronic observation handler, from the observation unit in the “Nesher” battalion, was honored for her actions on July 21, 2014. Sergeant Meir identified five Hamas terrorists who infiltrated Israel and disguised themselves with IDF uniforms. Later on that day, another group of Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel in the same location. Again, Sergeant Meir identified the group and reported to her commanders. Infantry forces and tanks arrived at the scene and prevented them from murdering Israeli soldiers and civilians.

among all the soldiers receiving honors, the highest honor will be given to Lieutenant Eitan Pond from the Givati brigade. Lieutenant Pond will receive the “Medal of Distinguished Service” for his brave actions during the abduction of Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, who was taken into a terror tunnel in the Gaza Strip. Lieutenant Pond arrived at the scene of the abduction, and led a four man search force into the tunnel in order to find Lieutenant Goldin. Lieutenant Pond’s actions helped determine Lieutenant Goldin’s death.

The recipients will receive their awards from IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz, and other generals.

Journey from the Battlefield: Israeli Non-Profit Helps IDF Soldiers Move Forward

Five months ago, Nufar Gross was on the battlefield treating wounded soldiers. The 33-year-old IDF paramedic spent her summer providing medical treatment to both wounded soldiers and civilians during the Operation Protective Edge, which lasted 50 days. It was not the first time that Gross saw life and death flashing before her eyes nor will it most likely be her last.

As a reserve paramedic, Gross is called up to treat IDF soldiers whenever war breaks out. “Suddenly, you find yourself in a dangerous situation – away from your home and family – doing everything possible to save lives,” Gross, from Haifa, told Tazpit News Agency.  “One day you are a student in the university and the next, in a life-and-death-situation. I witnessed blood, injuries and death when I was in Gaza.”

Gross explains that the experiences she has had on the battlefield in past operations have always left their mark. “All those images stay in your mind even after you leave the battlefront and go back to normal life.”

“In the past, when I’d get these war flashbacks at university or at work, I found that I couldn’t sleep at nights. I’d have nightmares. It was a huge transition to get back to civilian life.”

But after this last operation, Gross found that she could deal with the battlefield experiences as well as the transition back to civilian life more easily, thanks to her participation in an organization called Bishvil Hamachar.

Bishvil Hamachar (On the Path to Tomorrow) is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization that was established after the Second Lebanon War in 2007 to assist IDF soldiers in coping with difficult combat memories and adapting back to civilian life. The association was established to professionally work with soldiers, and utilizes out-door activities, trekking and other physical activities in nature both in Israel and abroad, combined with psychotherapeutic tools within verbal group sessions. According to the organization’s founder and head, Anat Samson-Joffe, the methods assist the soldiers, who come from across Israel and are of various backgrounds, to acquire tools for coping with their experiences and help them return to normal life.

“The idea is to enable our soldiers to build resilience through the power and calm of nature,” said Samson-Joffe in an interview with Tazpit News Agency. “Even when our young men and women come back home, they are often mentally ‘stuck’ on the battlefield,” she explained.

“War leaves emotional scars on everyone – these soldiers face some of the worst scenarios. The past Gaza war was extremely dangerous and stressful – our soldiers faced explosive tunnels, unexpected guerrilla attacks, human shields and more,” said Samson-Joffe who comes from central Israel.

“What we do is work to build these young people’s resilience so that they can continue on with normal lives when they return from the battlefield.”

Doron Zilber-Sporen, 30, from Tel Aviv, served in Givati and was involved with the explosives unit. He lost five fellow IDF soldiers on his team when an RPG exploded on their jeep in Gaza during one operation. “I didn’t talk about it because I thought that no one would understand, not my family or my friends…not even those best friends with me in the army,” he said.

In Bishvil Hamachar, Zilber-Sporen found a platform where he and his army buddies could talk about what had happened. “The organization took us on a trip to Romania into the beautiful nature and just isolated us. It was there that we talked about what happened and share our feelings and heard our commander’s point of view.”

“Today I feel more at peace with what happened,” said Zilber-Sporen, who does reserve duty with the other soldiers.

“I lost a friend from high school, who was my age in a Gaza operation,” recalls Alex Fishkin, 25, another participant in Bshvil Hamachar, who served in Gaza in 2007. “It was the first time I’d ever experienced losing someone my age. I also lost my officer and another friend a year later. This really affects your life.”

Saray Fang, 30, an IDF airborne paramedic who served during the Second Lebanon War, shares similar experiences. “One of my friends, a fellow paramedic was killed in the war. That really shook my team because we didn’t think that a paramedic could ever be killed. I mean we are the ones that treat others,” she emphasized.

“I felt very confused after my service, nothing seemed worthwhile,” says Fang from Jerusalem. “I felt that nothing I did was as important as what I had done in the army.”

“Then I went on a sailing trip in the Netherlands and talked with others who went through similar experiences like me. It was there that I reached the conclusion that I can still manage a full life,” explained Fang.

Nufar Gross believes that the organization’s unique journey programs have truly helped her. “I discovered new ways to deal with issues by hearing and learning from others. It made the chaos in my mind more manageable.”

“During this summer’s Tzuk Eitan [Operation Protective Edge], I found that during my reserve duty, I was better able to deal with the intensity of the battlefield. There was much more order in my mind,” she said.

“The hundreds of IDF soldiers who have gone through our programs have been able to gain a new key to life,” says Samson-Joffe, whose own father was killed in a terrorist attack when she was 12. “In war, there are no victories, only losses. But we can help our young men and women move forward on their own personal journeys.”

A Brief History of Carthay

0

By now, most of the Pico-Robertson/Beverlywood Jewish community is familiar with the idea that the community is expanding east to the neighborhoods of Faircrest Heights, south of Pico, and Carthay Circle, north of Olympic. But fewer people know how Carthay Circle got its name in the first place. After all, the neighborhood is not circular. It turns out that it was actually named for the Carthay Circle Theatre, opened in 1926, which did in fact have a circular auditorium, and was one of the most famous movie palaces of Hollywood’s Golden Age, hosting red carpet premiers and such legendary films as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Gone with the Wind. The theater was eventually demolished in 1969, but a replica lives on at Disney California Adventure, which also boasts the Carthay Circle Restaurant. So to eat in a restaurant named after their neighborhood, residents would need to head to Anaheim!

Named for an anglicized version of “McCarthy,” after developer J. Harvey McCarthy, Carthay Circle is a highly desirable neighborhood because of its convenient location adjacent to Beverly Hills and Beverlywood. Over the last few years, more Jewish families have moved to the neighborhood as synagogues such as Chabad SOLA (on La Cienega and Pickford) and The Beis Knesses at Faircrest Heights (at Crescent Heights and Pico), and smaller minyanim such as Bnai David Judea East Minyan have moved in to serve these pioneering Jewish families. But the original appeal of the neighborhood still remains – its thoughtful design. Each home had to be individually designed by an architect, leading to a wonderful variety of styles including Spanish, Colonial, English and Cape Cod. All utilities are underground, adding to the upscale appeal of the neighborhood. Carthay Circle’s southern boundary is Olympic Boulevard, but the adjacent neigborhoods of South Carthay and Carthay Square hold much of the same appeal for homebuyers. In fact, there is a new construction 5 bedroom, 6 bath home listed for $2,295,000 in Carthay Square, and several smaller homes have recently sold, both north and south of Olympic, for over $1.9M.
I have represented many buyers and sellers in Carthay over the last few years, and would be happy to talk to you about what your home is worth in today’s hot market or finding your dream home in this ideal neighborhood. Interest rates are low and so is inventory, making it a good time for both buyers and sellers to make a move. Please give me a call at 2130-280-9120 to discuss how I can help you achieve your real estate goals. I’m here to help!

Song Composed by: Dovid Lowy
Special Thanks to: Eli Woznica
Arranged by: Jeff Horvitch
Backup Vocals by: Ari Goldwag

We tend to find ourselves so busy that we never stop to see that The
Creator of the world is apparent in everything around us. We don’t
need to see open miracles or even search to the ends of the World to
find Him. This Video demonstrates how a simple leaf can bring one to
this awareness- all you have to do is just open your eyes!

Lyrics:
Translation:
“Raise your eyes and see Who created these”
“How abundant are Your works, Hashem; All of them with wisdom You
made. The land is full of Your possessions.”

English Lyrics: Credit to Eli Woznica
I see You,
I see You in the Earth and the heavens and stars,
Sometimes You seem hidden, Your hand in disguise,
But all we must do- is just open our eyes!

Israel Arrests Cell of Seven ISIS Supporters

0

Charges were pressed today against seven Israeli-Arab citizens, for planning to attack in Israel and for attempting to join ISIS in Syria.

The seven are Adnan Al a-Din (40), Karim Abu-Salah (22), Hosam Marisat (30), Alaa Abu-Salah (27), Faddi Bashir (29), Khalead Abu-Salah (30) and Muhammad Abu-Salah (27).

All are Arabs from the Galilee region in northern Israel. They were arrested during November and December of 2014, as a result of an investigation led by a joint police and Shin-Bet (Israel’s interior security agency) task force.

ISIS is an illegal organization according to Israeli law and therefore any activity related to the organization is prohibited by law.

The cell was trained in the usage of Molotov cocktail and other makeshift weapons, and the beheading of animals; which were done as preparation for the beheading of infidels as ISIS combatants. In addition, the cell members used the Internet to form a direct connection to ISIS activists in Syria, which also included Israeli citizens who are now ISIS combatants.

The most prominent character within the group was Adnan Al a-Din, a lawyer from Nazareth who used to work as a public defender. A-Din declared himself the official ISIS commander in Palestine, and preached to the carrying out of terror attacks against Jews.

Another group member, Karim Abu-Salah, confessed in his interrogation that he planned to purchase automatic firearms, in order to carry out terror attacks in Israel. His targets included Israel’s security forces and members of the Druze community, especially those with families in Syria.

In addition to planning to carry out terror attacks in Israel, Karim made an attempt to reach Syria and join ISIS. He was arrested at the Ben-Gurion airport last July, when he attempted to fly abroad and join ISIS. When he was arrested, Karim was carrying NIS 40,000 (roughly $10,000), which he intended to give to ISIS.
