Washington Wizards forward shows off Hebrew message to wounded Fauda actor.

Susan Tawil, World Israel News

An NBA star offered his support to an Israeli actor and IDF reservist wounded in the line of duty in Gaza, penning a Hebrew prayer for his recovery.

Washington Wizards forward Deni Avdija is the only Israeli player in the NBA (National Basketball Association). The 6’9” A-Grade player, in the top 40 for field goals, was #9 in the 2020 draft. Nicknamed “Turbo,” the 23-year old writes messages in Hebrew on his basketball shoes in support of Israel.

This Monday he sent get well wishes, handwritten on his game shoes, to TV’s Fauda star Idan Amedi, who was wounded that day while on IDF reserve duty in Gaza.

On Yom HaShoa (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in 2021, Avdija’s shoes carried the message: “Yizkor” (Remember). He has previously drawn Stars of David on his shoes, and the slogan: “Am Yisrael Chai” (the Nation of Israel Lives).

“My heart is with Israel,” Avdija says. On Monday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Avdija wrote (in Hebrew) on the midsole of his orange Nikes: “For the recovery of Idan, son of Tova, Amedi” (traditional Jewish prayers for healing always include the ailing person’s mother’s name).

Idan Amedi, 35, is a popular Israeli singer and actor.

He is best known for his role as Sago Tzur in the Netflix TV series Fauda, an action drama about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As a songwriter, he has five albums to his credit, and has millions of views on YouTube. Most of his songs, such as his 2010 hit, “A Warrior’s Pain,” reflect his experiences in the Israeli military.

After the brutal October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israeli villages that triggered the current Israeli retaliatory war, Amedi donned his IDF uniform and joined the 320,000 reservists in the fight to eliminate terrorism against Israel.

Although he plays an IDF soldier operating in Gaza in the Fauda TV series, in a video Amedi posted on X (Twitter) shortly after his call-up, he tells viewers: “This isn’t a scene from Fauda, this is real life!”

Idan Amedi is now serving in the IDF Combat Engineering Corps, destroying terror tunnels, missile sites, and Hamas command facilities in the Gaza Strip. About the tunnels, he tweeted: “It’s crazy, crazy what they built here!”

On January 8, he was seriously wounded by an explosion in Gaza. He was airlifted to Sheba Medical Center in Tel HaShomer, and underwent serious major surgery. He is now in moderate condition, and doctors are optimistic that he will survive.

Previous to Amedi’s injury, he posted a video in which he asserted: “We fully comprehend why we are here. We are here to protect our children, our families, and our homes. And I promise you that we won’t surrender until we win.” Refuah Shelayma, Idan ben Tova (Complete healing, Idan son of Tova)!

UNRWA Teachers’ Telegram Channel Glorifies Oct. 7 Hamas Massacre

0
By TPS • 10 January, 2024

Jerusalem, 10 January, 2024 (TPS) — A Telegram channel for UNRWA teachers in Gaza with over 3,000 members contains messages glorifying the Hamas massacre of Oct. 7 and encouraging the execution of Israeli hostages, an investigation by Geneva-based human rights NGO UN Watch has found.

“This is the motherlode of UNRWA teachers’ incitement to jihadi terrorism,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.

The Telegram group provides a forum for Gaza-based education workers from the United Nations agency tasked with supporting Palestinians displaced during the 1948 war and their descendants.

Neuer exposed the pro-Hamas and pro-terrorism messages in a series of tweets, including calling out UNRWA teacher Waseem Ula, who posts information he receives from UNRWA Gaza education chief Sami Abu Kamil on salaries. Ula calls to kill Israelis and glorifies a terrorist who participated in the Oct. 7 massacre. He also shared a video celebrating Hamas attacks and posted a picture of a suicide bomb vest with explosives with the caption: “Wait, sons of Judaism.”

Another UNRWA teacher, Abdallah Mehjez, who previously worked for the BBC, urges Gazans to become human shields for Hamas.

In another example, UNRWA teacher Shatha Husam Al Nawajha wishes that “Allah grant” victory to the Hamas terrorists.

“All these acts are gross violations of the UN Code of Conduct. We call on the UN and Member States to recognize that UNRWA is infested with incitement to terror,” Neuer tweeted.

Another report published in November by the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se) revealed evidence of UNRWA teachers and other staff members expressing support for the Oct. 7 massacre.

The report showed that at least 14 teachers and staff at UNRWA schools publicly celebrated the Hamas massacre and other Hamas attacks on their social media accounts.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry has put together a classified report calling for the removal of UNRWA from the Gaza Strip in the long-term, noting that the U.N. relief agency works against Israel’s interests.

The report’s recommendations set out a three-stage process for shrinking and eventually eliminating UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, from the Strip: 1) Prepare a case detailing UNRWA’s cooperation with Hamas; 2) Reduce UNRWA’s field of activity and find replacement service providers; and 3) Transfer UNRWA’s responsibilities to another entity.

The U.S. is UNRWA’s largest donor, disbursing almost $1 billion in funds to the U.N. agency over the last five years, followed by the European Union and other countries. More than half of Gaza’s 500,000 students  attend UNRWA-operated schools. These schools teach the Palestinian Authority curriculum, which has been condemned by the US and European Union for incitement to violence, hatred and antisemitism in its school textbooks

The UN Watch report comes on the heels of Knesset discussions on the future of Israel’s relations with the UN agency.

Israel has long said that UNRWA was created to perpetuate the conflict by granting Palestinians refugee status seven and a half decades after the establishment of the State of Israel although no other persons in the world would qualify under the same circumstances.

Established by the U.N. in 1949 to carry out relief and work programs for the hundreds of thousands of Arabs who fled their homes during the 1948-49 War of Independence, UNRWA defines refugees not only as refugees themselves but also their descendants in perpetuity, including those who have citizenship in other countries. As a result, the number of Palestinian “refugees” registered with the organization has mushroomed from 750,000 in 1950 to nearly six million today.

The main U.N. refugee agency, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) which cares for the rest of the refugees in the world, has no such policy.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long said UNRWA should be abolished and its responsibilities taken over by UNHCR.

Boeing Jetliner That Suffered Inflight Blowout Was Restricted Because Of Warning Light

0

The Boeing jetliner that suffered an inflight blowout over Oregon was not being used for flights to Hawaii after a warning light that could have indicated a pressurization problem lit up on three different flights.

Alaska Airlines decided to restrict the aircraft from long flights over water so the plane “could return very quickly to an airport” if the warning light reappeared, Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, said Sunday.

Homendy cautioned that the pressurization light might be unrelated to Friday’s incident in which a plug covering an unused exit door blew off the Boeing 737 Max 9 as it cruised about three miles (4.8 kilometers) over Oregon.

On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration approved guidelines for inspecting the door plugs on other Max 9 jets and repairing them, if necessary. That move should speed the return to service of 171 planes that the FAA grounded under an emergency order Saturday.

Alaska has 64 other Max 9s, and United Airlines owns 79 of them. No other U.S. airlines operate that model of the Boeing 737.

Shares of The Boeing Co. fell 8% and those of Spirit AeroSystems, which builds the fuselage for Boeing’s 737 Max, tumbled 11% Monday, the first day of trading since the incident occurred. Shares of Alaska Airlines were nearly unchanged after slumping earlier in the session.

The auto-pressurization system warning on the ill-fated Alaska Airlines jet lit up during three previous flights. Homendy said she didn’t have details about a Dec. 7 incident, but that it came on again during a flight on Jan. 3 and after the plane landed on Jan. 4 — the day before the blowout.

“We plan to look at that more, and we’ve requested documentation on all defects since delivery of the aircraft on Oct. 31,” she said.

The NTSB said the lost door plug was found Sunday near Portland, Oregon, in a the backyard of a home. Investigators will examine the plug, which is 26 by 48 inches (66 by 121 centimeters) and weighs 63 pounds (28.5 kilograms), for signs of how it broke free.

Investigators will not have the benefit of hearing what was going on in the cockpit during the flight. The cockpit voice recorder — one of two so-called black boxes — recorded over the flight’s sounds after two hours, Homendy said.

At a news conference Sunday night, Homendy provided new details about the chaotic scene that unfolded on the plane. The explosive rush of air damaged several rows of seats and pulled insulation from the walls. The cockpit door flew open and banged into a lavatory door.

The force ripped the headset off the co-pilot and the captain lost part of her headset. A quick reference checklist kept within easy reach of the pilots flew out of the open cockpit, Homendy said.

Two cell phones that appeared to have belonged to passengers on Friday’s terrifying flight were found on the ground. One was discovered in a yard, the other on the side of a road. Both were turned over to the NTSB.

The plane made it back to Portland, however, and none of the 171 passengers and six crew members was seriously injured.

Hours after the incident, the FAA ordered the grounding of 171 of the 218 Max 9s in operation, including all those used by Alaska Airlines and United Airlines, until they can be inspected. That led to flight cancellations at both carriers.

Early Monday, Alaska Airlines was forced to cancel 20% of all flights, 141 in all. United cancelled 221 flights, or 8% of its total flights scheduled for Monday.

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun called a companywide webcast to talk about the incident with employees and senior leadership for Tuesday.

“When serious accidents like this occur, it is critical for us to work transparently with our customers and regulators to understand and address the causes of the event, and to ensure they don’t happen again,” Calhoun wrote in a message to employees Sunday. “This is and must be the focus of our team right now.”

Alaska Airlines flight 1282 took off from Portland at 5:07 p.m. Friday for a two-hour trip to Ontario, California. About six minutes later, the chunk of fuselage blew out as the plane was climbing at about 16,000 feet (4.8 kilometers).

One of the pilots declared an emergency and asked for clearance to descend to 10,000 feet (3 kilometers), where the air would be rich enough for passengers to breathe without oxygen masks.

Videos posted online by passengers showed a gaping hole where the paneled-over door had been. They applauded when the plane landed safely about 13 minutes after the blowout. Firefighters came down the aisle, asking passengers to remain in their seats as they treated the injured.

It was extremely lucky that the airplane had not yet reached cruising altitude, when passengers and flight attendants might be walking around the cabin, Homendy said.

The aircraft involved rolled off the assembly line and received its certification two months ago, according to online FAA records. It had been on 145 flights since entering commercial service Nov. 11, said FlightRadar24, another tracking service. The flight from Portland was the aircraft’s third of the day.

The Max is the newest version of Boeing’s venerable 737, a twin-engine, single-aisle plane frequently used on U.S. domestic flights. The plane went into service in May 2017.

Two Max 8 jets crashed in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people. All Max 8 and Max 9 planes were grounded worldwide for nearly two years until Boeing made changes to an automated flight control system implicated in the crashes.

The Max has been plagued by other issues, including manufacturing flaws, concern about overheating that led FAA to tell pilots to limit use of an anti-ice system, and a possible loose bolt in the rudder system.

Inspired by Penn, donors suspend Rutgers funding over Jew-hatred

0

(JNS) — Before Eva and Marvin Schlanger wrote their end-of-year checks to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, the two alumni of the public school called the Rutgers Hillel to inquire about the climate on the campus of their alma mater, to which they have been donors for many years.

That’s when they learned Yoel Ackerman, a Jewish law student, faces expulsion from Rutgers for “doxxing” two students who spread Hamas propaganda on social media.

“We did a bit of research on that and our conclusion was that it was clear that this was a Jewish student, who was intimidated and was being hassled for merely speaking out about what actually happened on Oct. 7,” Marvin Schlanger told JNS.

The student bar association threatened to suspend Ackerman, and the administrative processes the university had in place designed to give the student a fair hearing came up short, according to Schlanger. (Ackerman is reportedly suing Rutgers.)

“He didn’t get due process that every student is entitled to. We found this quite disturbing,” said Schlanger.

The Schlangers, who thought that donors pulling funding from the University of Pennsylvania presented “a pretty good model for getting the attention of the administration,” wrote to Jonathan Holloway, the Rutgers president, expressing concern.

“We waited a few weeks and got no feedback at all from anybody in the administration, nobody from development, nobody from the senior levels of administration,” said Marvin Schlanger. “That’s why we went public with this. Our position is that our checkbook is closed until we see action on the part of the administration at Rutgers that they are committed to protecting the Jewish students—to protecting all students, but the problem is with the Jewish students on campus.”

“This is now a couple of months later, and we still have not heard anything by writing, by phone call from anybody in the administration,” he said.

The Schlangers did not tell JNS how much they have given to Rutgers over the years, but they directed JNS to a WHYY report that their Eva and Marvin Schlanger Family Foundation has given more than $130,000 to Rutgers in the past decade.

Marvin has donated to the school of engineering, which he attended, and Eva, a graduate of the Rutgers Arts and Sciences College, has supported a full scholarship for a woman studying in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), the donors told JNS.

The Schlangers, who are not involved in Ackerman’s lawsuit, didn’t comment on it to JNS. But they discussed what would have to change at Rutgers for them to reopen their checkbooks.

“I’d like the Ackerman situation to be clarified. I’d like to see the university take clear action to ensure he gets due process. I’d like to see a statement from the administration recognizing that the Jewish and pro-Israel students have been intimidated and have felt threatened and the university is 100% committed to protecting them on campus,” Marvin Schlanger said.

There have been several other antisemitic incidents on the university’s campuses, according to Schlanger. The Jew-hatred represents “a continual drift in this direction” over the years at Rutgers, he added. “But the Oct. 7 attack, invasion, by the Gazans has unleashed what the Wall Street Journal refers to as the ‘global war on Jews.’”

‘No Hillel at the time’

In the 1960s, Eva Schlanger and her peers started a Jewish group called Ha-or (the light) at Rutgers. “We never had any issues,” she told JNS. “We had a meeting space, if we so wanted it. We had speakers and entertainment and events. To my mind, it was never an issue.”

With a lot of commuter students, there was a “fair number” of Jewish students at the time on campus, she said. “I don’t think it was entirely Jewish, but I think it was closer to 50-50 ratio.”

“I never had an issue. I was there through the Newark riots, and when I went back to school after the riots, I never felt threatened. I never was afraid,” she said. “Classes went on, and at the time Rutgers was spread out over hotels and different venues all across Newark. There were never any incidents I was aware of.” (From July 12-17, 1967, 26 people were killed and 700 were injured in the riots, which the National Guard was called in to quell.)

“I essentially enjoyed my time at Rutgers,” she said. “It was kind of a hip place to be.”

Marvin Schlanger lived on the New Brunswick campus as a student. “Rutgers was considered a great school for people to come from the Midwest. It was more affordable than the Ivy League schools, so it was an attraction to people from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana,” he said. “People from up and down the East Coast: Long Island, Upstate New York, etc. We had quite a mix of people on campus.”

He can’t think of any overt antisemitic acts, but “occasionally you would run into something that should have been interpreted as an antisemitic kind of comment, born more out of ignorance than maliciousness,” he said. “I think people learned what they learned at home, and they would say something not being sensitive to the fact that those comments are really antisemitic.”

“What’s changed is that things that people would not say back then in polite company are considered acceptable speech today,” he said. “Only an extreme antisemite would stand up in a public gathering and say, ‘The Jews control Congress.’ They might have thought it, but it wasn’t something that someone openly said in polite conversation.”

“Unfortunately today, it’s now acceptable for people, including people in authority in Congress, to say that decisions in Congress about Israel are made because of the money,” he said.

“It was easier being a Jew and a supporter of Israel on campus when we were in school than it is today,” he said.

Eva Schlanger told JNS that it’s important for Jews not to go around in fear, even as antisemitism has spread on campuses.

“You can’t let your world shrink as a Jew. That’s not a good example to set for your kids going off to college or yourself,” she said. “On the other hand, I’m not sure if I had a student today that I would send them to—and I’ll use this example—Berkeley. I might be hesitant to throw them into the jaws of that.”

Paula Joffe, the recently retired executive director of StandWithUs in the Mid-Atlantic, told JNS that antisemitism has been afflicting high schools and middle schools, in addition to colleges and universities.

“It becomes incumbent upon members of the broader community to make a stance and demand change for the protection of our children,” she said. “Alumni must use the power of their collective network to put financial pressure on universities.”

Joffe called for better monitoring of curricula and textbooks as well. “Our children deserve an honest and unbiased education, certainly not one that is filled with disinformation and intimidation,” she said.

Marvin Schlanger hopes that things will change at his alma mater.

“We want to donate to Rutgers. This is not about not donating,” he said. “What we need is some clarity from the Rutgers administration, and we haven’t had that.”

Israeli president reveals Hamas terror camps for kids to NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’

Activities in the terror camp included training children to shoot weapons and simulate terror attacks to prepare the next generation of Hamas terrorists.

By Vered Weiss, World Israel News

In an interview with NBC‘s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog revealed documents that showed Hamas ran terror camps for children on their bases.

The document, which was discovered by the IDF during their campaign in Gaza was written and issued in July 2023 by the Al Qassam Brigade military wing of Hamas.

It said the purpose of the project was  “to advance the resistance culture and the values of Jihad… to contribute to the militarization of society” with activities for children that included terror attack simulations.

The children’s activities in the terror camp include training children to shoot weapons, simulate terror attacks, and study courses in Hamas ideology to prepare the next generation of Gazan children to become Hamas terrorists.

In the interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, President Herzog said, “This is not only a war between Israel and Hamas, it has to do with the values of the free world.”

ISRAELI HOSTAGE IN GAZA CONFIRMED MURDERED IN CAPTIVITY

Herzog unveiled the document on the television program and revealed that it was discovered by Israeli troops at Hamas headquarters in Gaza.

Herzog said the document was a “directive by the commanders of Hamas as to how to manage summer camps for children to disseminate the values of jihad.”

He continued, “It says it clearly to disseminate the values of jihad, and the values of the resistance meaning terror, and how to make it a militarized society.”

“It’s all over the Gaza Strip, meaning they take the kids – whilst we all know what summer camps are and what they’re aimed for, and what a wonderful experience it is to enable youngsters, kids, and adolescents to become citizens of the free world and with liberty, with happiness with joy, with sports – here their entire aim is to make them terrorists.”

Israel Takes Control of Massive Weapons Complex Below Densely Populated Gaza Area

0
By Pesach Benson • 8 January, 2024

Jerusalem, 8 January, 2024 (TPS) — Israeli soldiers took control of Hamas’s Bureij Battalion headquarters which included a massive underground weapons manufacturing facility — the largest such site found since the beginning of the war, the Israel Defense Forces said on Monday night.

The complex was located in and beneath the densely populated area of Bureij in central Gaza.

Soldiers of the IDF’s 188th and Golani brigades uncovered several tunnel shafts reaching a depth of approximately 30 meters and, following precise intelligence, exposed a terrorist stronghold used to manufacture weapons.

The soldiers also located many other underground production facilities used for the manufacturing of long-range rockets, explosives and accuracy enhancers for Hamas’s mortar shells, light weapons and UAVs. Additionally, the forces killed dozens of terrorists in the area.

In the area, soldiers found components for long-range rockets that could be fired from the Gaza Strip as far as northern Israel, as well as mortar shells, explosives and ammunition. Some of the rockets produced have a range of 100 km.

The IDF said the area was connected by underground tunnel shafts to wider tunnel network used to transport weapons to Hamas battalions throughout  Gaza.

Photos and videos released by the military showed rocket components, molds for making parts, an underground elevator shaft, and assorted weapons.

Since the beginning of the war, Hamas has indiscriminately fired thousands of rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israel. Iran is known to provide support and know-how to help Hamas produce its own rockets.

At least 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on Oct. 7. The number of men, women, children, soldiers and foreigners held captive in Gaza by Hamas is now believed to be 129. Other people remain unaccounted for as Israeli authorities continue to identify bodies and search for human remains.

Dr. Mindy Boxer – Acupuncture for Treating Leaky Gut Syndrome

There are a variety of gastrointestinal and autoimmune diseases that can contribute to what is known as leaky gut syndrome. So, what exactly is leaky gut syndrome? It’s close to exactly what it sounds like. Each one of us has semi-permeable guts. What that means is the mucous lining of our intestines is designed to absorb water and nutrients from our food. Your intestinal lining is responsible for acting as a barrier to bacteria. With leaky gut syndrome, your intestinal lining “leaks” allowing more water and nutrients through, but also potentially allowing toxic molecules to come through as well.

Some common causes of leaky gut include suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, chronic overuse of NSAIDs or alcohol and even food allergies. Symptoms can include gas, bloating, low energy levels, and painful indigestion. Basically, your immune system is compromised when you have leaky gut.

If you think leaky gut syndrome might be an issue, there are some steps you can take that may provide some relief. Dietary changes are typically the first order of business. Avoiding alcohol, processed sugars, caffeine, and dairy products is a good first step. Try eating more organic fruits and vegetables loaded with antioxidants that fight off free radicals. Add in some essential fatty acids from foods such as walnuts and flaxseed oil.

The next best option is to make an appointment with me.  Chinese medicine can be an extremely helpful tool in repairing your leaky gut. The very first thing I  will do is a full health history to examine the underlying causes of the issue that is causing this imbalance in your body. Some of the questions asked might not make sense initially as they might not seem related to the condition. But remember, they are looking at your entire body and looking at all contributing factors.

What you might not know is that there are twelve meridians or channels in your body. Energy or “qi” flows through each of these channels which are connected to a specific organ in your body. When one or more of these channels experiences an issue, your body becomes imbalanced. Specifically with leaky gut syndrome, there is often an energy imbalance in the spleen, liver, heart, or kidney meridians. I will needle these channels & other appropriate points to help correct this energy imbalance.

I might also prescribe Chinese herbs as an additional treatment option. While the acupuncture needling works to rebalance your energy, Chinese herbs work in your blood and have been shown to kill bacteria, lower cholesterol, balance hormones, and lower blood pressure, just to name a few of the amazing results you can get from taking Chinese herbs.

Duration and frequency of treatment will vary depending on the severity of the condition. Traditional medicine can prescribe various drugs to address the symptoms of leaky gut, but you want to deal with the root of the problem. Make an appointment today to begin the journey to rebalance your energy and heal your gut from the inside out.

Resolution 2: Master Your Debt

Debt can be a powerful financial tool if used wisely and managed effectively. By carefully working your debt load, you can ensure that life’s pleasures and necessities remain within reach without overwhelming yourself. One effective strategy is eliminating high-cost, non-deductible consumer debt, allowing you to allocate your resources more efficiently. Another approach is to align your repayment terms with your life’s timeline, enabling you to balance your financial obligations with your long-term goals.

Additionally, it is worth considering the benefits of refinancing or consolidating debt, which can help optimize your repayment strategy and potentially reduce the overall cost of debt. By taking these proactive steps, you can leverage the potential of debt while maintaining a healthy financial outlook.
?

Resolution 3: Cultivate Your Investment Garden

Ensure the prosperity of your investments by prioritizing a well-rounded and diversified portfolio. By diversifying across various asset classes and within them, you can effectively minimize risk while maximizing your growth potential.

Additionally, it is essential to remember the impact of taxes when allocating your assets. To maintain alignment with your goals and adapt to life changes, make it a habit to monitor and rebalance your portfolio regularly. This diligent approach will help you navigate the ever-changing investment landscape with confidence.
?

Resolution 4: Safeguard Against the Unknown

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, but being prepared can make all the difference. Take proactive steps to protect yourself and your loved ones by investing in comprehensive insurance plans covering various life aspects. Consider health insurance for medical expenses, life insurance for financial security, disability insurance for income protection, property insurance for safeguarding your assets, and liability insurance for unforeseen circumstances.

Additionally, don’t overlook the significance of long-term care insurance to ensure you have the necessary support in your golden years. Lastly, create a well-thought-out disaster plan to safeguard your assets and provide peace of mind. Taking these precautions allows you to navigate life’s uncertainties with confidence and security.
?

Resolution 5: Preserve Your Legacy

An estate plan is not just a legal document; it’s your heartfelt love letter to the future. It ensures that your hard-earned assets and beloved dependents are taken care of exactly as you desire. To maintain the effectiveness of your estate plan, it is crucial to review and update beneficiary designations and your will regularly.

Additionally, coordinating asset titling with your estate plan can help streamline the distribution process. President Biden, Top Pentagon Officials Didn’t Know Def. Sec. Austin Was Hospitalized

Senior Biden administration leaders, top Pentagon officials and members of Congress were unaware for days that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had been hospitalized since Monday, U.S. officials said Saturday, as questions swirled about his condition and the secrecy surrounding it.

The Pentagon did not inform the White House National Security Council or top adviser Jake Sullivan of Austin’s hospitalization at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, until Thursday, according to two administration officials. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

The Pentagon’s failure to disclose Austin’s hospitalization for days reflects a stunning lack of transparency about his illness, how serious it was and when he may be released. Such secrecy, at a time when the United States is juggling myriad national security crises, runs counter to normal practice with the president and other senior U.S. officials and Cabinet member

Still, President Joe Biden spoke with Austin on Saturday, and expressed confidence in him, according to a White House official who was not authorized to speak publicly about internal discussions and spoke on condition of anonymity.

In a statement issued Saturday evening, Austin took responsibility for the delays in notification.

“I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better,” said Austin, acknowledging the concerns about transparency. “But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure.”

Austin, 70, remained hospitalized due to complications following a minor elective medical procedure, his press secretary said, as it became increasingly clear how closely the Pentagon held information about his stay at Walter Reed. In his statement, Austin said he is on the mend and is looking forward to returning to the Pentagon soon, but he provided no other details about his ailment.

Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said the White House and the Joint Chiefs of Staff were notified about Austin’s hospitalization, but he would not confirm when that notice happened.

A number of U.S. officials said Saturday that many of the most senior Pentagon service leaders were unaware until Friday that Austin was in the hospital. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations. Politico was the first to report the White House learned of his condition on Thursday.

Ryder said members of Congress were told late Friday afternoon, and other officials said lawmakers were informed after 5 p.m. It was not clear when key senior members of Austin’s staff were told, but across the Pentagon, many staff found out when the department released a statement about Austin’s hospital stay just minutes after 5 p.m. Many believed Austin was out on vacation for the week.

Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks, who took over when Austin was hospitalized, was also away. A U.S. official said she had a communications setup with her in Puerto Rico that allowed her to do the job while Austin, who spent 41 years in the military and retired as a four-star Army general in 2016, was incapacitated.

Ryder said Saturday that Austin is recovering well and resumed his full duties Friday evening from his hospital bed. Asked why the hospital stay was kept secret for so long, Ryder said on Friday that it was an “evolving situation,” and that due to privacy and medical issues, the Pentagon did not make Austin’s absence public. Ryder declined to provide any other details about Austin’s medical procedure or health.

“The Department of Defense deliberately withheld the Secretary of Defense’s medical condition for days. That is unacceptable,” said Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker, the highest-ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee. “We are learning more every hour about the Department’s shocking defiance of the law.”

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, also criticized the delayed notice.

“The Secretary of Defense is the key link in the chain of command between the president and the uniformed military, including the nuclear chain of command, when the weightiest of decisions must be made in minutes,” said Cotton in a statement, adding that if Austin didn’t immediately tell the White House, “there must be consequences for this shocking breakdown.”

The Pentagon Press Association, which represents media members who cover the Defense Department, sent a letter of protest on Friday evening to Ryder and Chris Meagher, the assistant defense secretary for public affairs.

“The fact that he has been at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for four days and the Pentagon is only now alerting the public late on a Friday evening is an outrage,” the PPA said in its letter. “At a time when there are growing threats to U.S. military service members in the Middle East and the U.S. is playing key national security roles in the wars in Israel and Ukraine, it is particularly critical for the American public to be informed about the health status and decision-making ability of its top defense leader.”

Other senior U.S. leaders have been much more transparent about hospital stays. When Attorney General Merrick Garland went in for a routine medical procedure in 2022, his office informed the public a week in advance and outlined how long he was expected to be out and when he would return to work.

Austin’s hospitalization comes as Iranian-backed militias have repeatedly launched drones, missiles and rockets at bases where U.S. troops are stationed in Iraq and Syria, leading the Biden administration to strike back on a number of occasions. Those strikes often involve sensitive, top-level discussions and decisions by Austin and other key military leaders.

The U.S. is also the chief organizer behind a new international maritime coalition using ships and other assets to patrol the southern Red Sea to deter persistent attacks on commercial vessels by Houthi militants in Yemen.

In addition, the administration, particularly Austin, has been at the forefront of the effort to supply weapons and training to Ukraine, and he’s also been communicating frequently with the Israelis on their war against Hamas.
