Boeing Asks Airlines to Inspect 737 Max Jets for Potential Loose Bolt

0

(AP) – Boeing is asking airlines to inspect its 737 Max jets for a potential loose bolt in the rudder control system, the airplane maker and Federal Aviation Administration confirmed this week.

The FAA said it would be “closely monitoring” the targeted inspections. The agency said Thursday that Boeing issued its inspection guidance to airlines after an international operator found a bolt with a missing nut during routine maintenance. In a separate case, Boeing also discovered an undelivered aircraft that had a nut that was not properly tightened.

“The issue identified on the particular airplane has been remedied,” the Arlington, Virginia, company told The Associated Press on Friday. “Out of an abundance of caution, we are recommending operators inspect their 737 MAX airplanes and inform us of any findings.”

Boeing added that it will continue to update both customers and federal regulators on the progress.

The FAA said it will remain in contact with Boeing and impacted airlines as the inspections are performed, and potentially “consider additional action based on any further discovery of loose or missing hardware.”

According to Boeing, there have been no in-flight incidents caused by this condition to date — noting that crews’ routine checks would signal if the rudder was not working properly before an aircraft pushes back from the gate.

The company added that all airplanes Boeing is set to deliver onward will have the inspection (which is estimated to take about two hours per plane) prior to delivery.

U.S. carriers with 737 Max jets in their fleet include United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. All four of these carriers told The Associated Press Friday that they don’t expect operational impacts. Southwest, for example, said it was currently performing all of these inspections during routine overnight maintenance.

A firm timeline for the inspections wasn’t provided for each airline, but Alaska said it expected to complete the process by the first half of January.

Boeing’s 737 Max jets were grounded worldwide for 20 months after two crashes in 2018 and 2019 killed a total of 346 people. Investigations focused on an automated flight-control system that pushed the nose of the plane down based on faulty sensor readings. Boeing did not tell pilots and airlines about the system until after the first crash.

The FAA, which also faced criticism for the way it approved the Max jets prior to these deadly crashes, has since moved to provide a more-detailed certification process for large planes and required safety disclosures.

Israeli Cabinet Approves New Foreign Minister

0
By Pesach Benson • 31 December, 2023

Jerusalem, 31 December, 2023 (TPS) — The Israeli Cabinet approved Israel Katz to become Foreign Minister, replacing Eli Cohen as part of a rotation agreement made when the government was formed in 2022.

Katz, currently serves as Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. The two will swap Cabinet portfolios. The move requires Knesset approval, which is expected. Both Katz and Cohen are members of Likud.

The foreign minister is nominally responsible for Israel’s relations with other countries and representing the Jewish state in international forums. But in his previous term, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu preferred to be more hands-on directing Israel’s foreign relations, keeping the portfolio for himself most of the time.

Katz is the son of Romanian Holocaust survivors. The 68-year-old entered politics in 1996, and by 2003, he rose to Minister of Agriculture. Since then, Katz has also served as Minister of Transport, Intelligence, and more recently of Finance. Between Feb. 2019-May 2020, Katz served as Netanyahu’s Foreign Minister.

The 51-year-old Cohen is an accountant by training who entered politics with the centrist Kulanu party in 2015. Between 2017-2021, he served as Minister of Economy and then as Minister of Intelligence. He followed Kulanu into Likud when the parties merged in 2020. Cohen also lectures at Tel Aviv University.

Cohen will continue to sit on the Security Cabinet.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks zt”l -Grandparents – VAYECHI • 5771 5784

Every Friday night we re-enact one of the most moving scenes in the book of Bereishit. Jacob, reunited with Joseph, is ill. Joseph comes to visit him, bring bringing with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. Jacob, with deep emotion, says:

“I never expected to see you again, and now God has shown me your children as well.”

Gen. 48:11

He blesses Joseph. Then he places his hands on the heads of the two boys.

He blessed them that day and said, “[In the time to come] Israel will use you as a blessing. They will say, ‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.’”

Gen. 48:20

So we do to this day, with these very words. Why this blessing above all others? One commentator (Yalkut Yehudah) says it is because Ephraim and Manasseh were the first two Jewish children born in exile. So Jewish parents bless their children asking God to help them keep their identity intact despite all the temptations and distractions of Diaspora life.

I heard however a most lovely explanation, based on the Zohar, from my revered predecessor Lord Jakobovits of blessed memory. He said that though there are many instances in Torah and Tanach in which parents bless their children, this is the only example of a grandparent blessing grandchildren.

Between parents and children, he said, there are often tensions. Parents worry about their children. Children sometimes rebel against their parents. The relationship is not always smooth.

Not so with grandchildren. There the relationship is one of love untroubled by tension or anxiety. When a grandparent blesses a grandchild they do so with a full heart. That is why this blessing by Jacob to his grandchildren became the model of blessing across the generations. Anyone who has had the privilege of having grandchildren will immediately understand the truth and depth of this explanation.

Grandparents bless their grandchildren and are blessed by them. This phenomenon is the subject of a fascinating difference of opinion between the Babylonian Talmud and the Talmud Yerushalmi. The Babylonian Talmud says the following:

Rabbi Joshua ben Levi said, “Whoever teaches their grandchildren Torah is regarded as if they had received the Torah from Mount Sinai, as it is said, ‘Teach your children and your children’s children.’”

Deut. 4:10-11; Kiddushin 30a

The Talmud Yerushalmi puts it differently. Rabbi Joshua ben Levi used to listen, every Friday, to his grandson reciting the weekly parsha. One week he entered the bathhouse, and after he had begun bathing he remembered that he had not yet heard the weekly parsha from his grandson. So he immediately got up to leave the bathhouse… They asked him why he was leaving in the middle of his bathing, since the Mishnah teaches that once you have begun bathing on a Friday afternoon, you should not interrupt the process. He replied, “Is this such a small thing in your eyes? For whoever hears the parsha from his grandchild is as if he heard it directly from Mount Sinai” (Yerushalmi Shabbat 1:2).

According to the Talmud Bavli, it is a great privilege is to teach your grandchildren Torah. According to the Talmud Yerushalmi, the greatest privilege is to have your grandchildren teach Torah to you. This is one argument about which no grandparent will have the slightest difficulty saying that both are true.

My late father, of blessed memory, had to leave school at the age of 14 to begin working to support his family, and as a result he never had the full Jewish or secular education that he would have wanted. I remember from my childhood that – as we walked home from shul on a Shabbat morning – I would be full of questions. “Dad, why do we do this?” “Why did we do that?” My father always gave me the same answer, and that was the answer that changed my life. He said, “Jonathan, I didn’t have a Jewish education, so I can’t answer your questions. But one day, you will have the education that I didn’t have. And when that happens, you will teach me the answers to those questions.”

The greatest gift you can give a child or a grandchild is what you empower and allow them to teach you. As parents, we strive to give our children everything. There’s one thing we sometimes forget to give them which is the chance for them to give something to us. And that, frankly, is the most important thing there is.

Give your children and your grandchildren the space to give to you. Let them become your teachers and let them be your inspiration. In doing so you will help them become the people that they were destined to be, and you will help create the blessings God wants them to become.

With an exquisite sense of symmetry, just as we begin Shabbat with a grandparent’s blessing so we end it, in Maariv, with the words:

May you live to see your children’s children – peace be on Israel.

Psalm 128:6

What is the connection between grandchildren and peace? Surely this, that those who think about grandchildren care about the future, and those who think about the future make peace. It is those who constantly think of the past, of slights and humiliations and revenge, who make war.

Jacob lives a life fraught with conflict and troubles. He knew of revenge and war, of grudges and strife. But he died serene, and full of blessings. And before he died, he blessed his children and grandchildren.

To bless grandchildren and be blessed by them, to teach them and to be taught by them – these are the highest Jewish privilege and the serene end of Jacob’s troubled life.

UN IS HAMAS: Gaza Residents Tells IDF That UNRWA Is Completely Controlled By Terrorists

0

Israeli security officials have released a recording of a Palestinian residing in Gaza accusing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) of being controlled by Hamas, and being guilty of severe mismanagement and diversion of humanitarian supplies.

“The situation is terrible because the humanitarian people, those responsible for the humanitarian aid, are thieves,” the Gaza resident said in the recording. He further claimed, “Hamas has their hands on UNRWA administration workers, and it manages UNRWA. From the day they [Hamas] rose to power they took control of everything.”

According to the man, Hamas ensures that the incoming humanitarian supplies are first distributed among its members, sidelining the needs of over one million civilians displaced by the war.

The man’s comments were made during a call recorded by the IDF, during which an IDF officer was informing Palestinians about evacuation locations and aid distribution points amid ongoing Israeli bombardments in Gaza.

UNRWA’s mandate is to provide assistance and protection to registered Palestinian refugees, but it has faced accusations – along with mountains of evidence – of its support of Hamas.

In one incident reported by the Jerusalem Post, an Israeli hostage released by Hamas claimed to have been held in the attic of a UNRWA teacher. In another, the IDF discovered Hamas tunnels near UNRWA schools. Despite these allegations,  UNRWA has consistently denied any affiliation with Hamas.

The US House Foreign Affairs Committee is reportedly preparing to investigate UNRWA, according to committee member Rep. Darrell Issa. “There is extensive evidence of a troubling connection between UNRWA and Hamas, and it is far deeper than was known,” said Issa. “Congress must now investigate and uncover the extent of what UNRWA knew, what it did, and what it may be hiding from the world.”

This investigation comes after the US resumed funding to UNRWA under President Biden in 2021, following a halt in 2018 under the Trump administration. Since Biden’s inauguration, the US has provided approximately $730 million in aid to the terror-backing UN agency.

State of antisemitism in the US ‘is really scary,’ says Jewish NFL owner

Kraft recently donated $100 million to his Foundation to Combat Antisemitism.

By Shiryn Ghermezian, The Algemeiner

New England Patriots owner and Jewish billionaire Robert Kraft warned of the ongoing surge in antisemitism across the US on Monday, emphasizing the importance of combating increased hostility and discrimination toward the American Jewish community.

“If we don’t do a good job of controlling it, I think hate leads to violence. And what we’re seeing going on in this country now is really scary to me,” Kraft, who founded the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism four years ago, said during an interview on CNN. The NFL owner added that he is concerned about antisemitism affecting other minorities if it is not stopped.

“Most people are good, but when you start seeing hate and it starts with Jewish hate, there will be hate against all minorities,” Kraft said. “You’re next.”

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war that began with the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks in the Jewish state, the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism has been busy countering misinformation online. “Fifty percent of what’s being spread is lies and not accurate, and young people unfortunately are believing,” Kraft explained.

He added that his foundation has seen a rise in small donations from Americans who want to contribute to the fight against hatred. Kraft himself recently matched a $100 million donation to his foundation to help fight antisemitism.

Drawing awareness of antisemitism is something that hits close to home for Kraft. He told CNN: “I had people who didn’t want to do business with me. They thought I had horns in my head. They had never met someone from my background and it just allows you to work harder.”

US Downs 17 Houthi Attack Drones, Missiles in Red Sea

0
By TPS • 27 December, 2023

Jerusalem, 27 December, 2023 (TPS) — The United States military said on Tuesday night that its forces had intercepted 12 attack drones and five missiles in the southern Red Sea launched by Houthi terrorists in Yemen.

Two hours earlier, the Israeli military announced that an Israeli Air Force fighter jet had shot down a “hostile aerial target that was on its way to Israeli territory,” adding that the “air control unit tracked the target throughout the incident.”

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) tweeted that the guided-missile destroyer USS Laboon and F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets from the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group struck the drones and missiles, which included three anti-ship ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles.

The drones and missiles were “fired by the Houthis over a 10 hour period which began at approximately 6:30 a.m. (Sanaa time) on December 26. There was no damage to ships in the area or reported injuries,” CENTCOM said.

From bases along the Yemeni coast, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels have threatened ships in the Red Sea as they traverse the Bab el-Mandeb Straits, a narrow maritime chokepoint between the Arabian Peninsula and Africa. The majority of the world’s oil passes through the strait from the Indian Ocean towards the Suez Canal and Mediterranean Sea.

The Houthis vowed in early December to target any Israel-bound ship in the Red Sea, regardless of its ownership. They have attacked or harassed a number of ships, and hijacked the Galaxy Leader in November. The cargo ship and its crew of 25 are being held hostage in the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.

Major shipping companies have responded to the threat by rerouting vessels away from the Suez Canal-Red Sea route to going around the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, a much longer journey.

In response, the US is leading Operation Prosperity Guardian, a multinational coalition of naval forces protecting shipping in the Red Sea.

Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping companies, will resume operations in the Red Sea despite Houthi threats, the Danish company announced on Sunday.

The White House on December 22 accused Iran of helping to plan Houthi attacks against cargo vessels during the Israel-Hamas war.

“We know that Iran was deeply involved in planning the operations against commercial vessels in the Red Sea. This is consistent with Iran’s long-term materiel support and encouragement of the Houthis’ destabilizing actions in the region,” White House national security spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement.

Druze Restaurant Goes Kosher to Unite With Soldiers

By Sveta Listratov • 27 December, 2023

Jerusalem, 27 December, 2023 (TPS) — The aroma of spices and the sound rattling of pans filled the kitchen of the Noor restaurant. The restaurant, nestled in the Galilee Druze village of Julis, was made kosher in an act of solidarity with soldiers passing through the town.

“I want to feed all the Israeli soldiers! They all are like my children, doesn’t matter, Druze or Jewish,” Basma Hino, the owner of the restaurant Noor, told TPS.

Basma explained to TPS that when the war started, the restaurant saw drop-off in customers and a lot of unused food.

So she and her son, Noor, used the leftover to create meals for soldiers. This was particularly moving for the 21 year-old Noor, who recently completed his mandatory military service and even fed soldiers who served in his late father’s brigade.

“It was very meaningful experience for us to cook and drive the food to the soldiers together, by ourselves. They asked for 400-500 portions, I have never cooked in such numbers, but it was a great honor for me to do so,” Basma told TPS. “That was when I realized that not all soldiers could eat my food since it was not kosher. So I made up my mind to certify my kitchen as kosher.”

So she reached out to MK Uri Maklev of the United Torah Judaism party, who helped Basma expedite matters with the Chief Rabbinate. The process of making the restaurant kosher required replacing or intensely cleaning pots and dishes and kitchen equipment under the rabbinate’s supervision.

That completed, Basma now opens the restaurant to the public three days a week and reserves one day exclusively to prepare meals for soldiers. This dedicated day, already a regular commitment, sees her cooking and distributing hundreds of meals to soldiers stationed in the northern outposts.

Occasionally, she collaborates with the Jewish National Fund, welcoming groups of numerous Jewish volunteers from the US, who lend a hand with food preparation and packaging.

Daniel Maller, one American volunteer, told TPS, “This war is a very personal matter for the American Jews, the security of this country matters to all of us. And that’s why what Basma has been doing here for the soldiers is incredible.” Maller, an attorney from Arlington, Virginia came to Israel to volunteer for a week and for one day, the JNF brought him to Julis.

Basma’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. On that same day, Yitzhak Wasserlauf, who serves as Minister for the Development of the Negev and the Galilee, paid a surprise visit to express his appreciation.

“With the Druze, we have a covenant of life and also a covenant of blood, as we fight shoulder to shoulder,” Wasserlauf told the crowd of volunteers. “Basma is an example of the wonderful people in our nation, a source of inspiration and pride. It’s very exciting to behold.”

His remarks left Basma wiping tears from her eyes.

“As a Druze it is very important for me to strengthen the relationship between the Druze and the Jews,” she explained. “We all live here together; we fight the war together and here at my restaurant we cook shoulder to shoulder for our hero soldiers. We love our country and it’s an amazing feeling to hear the Jewish government officials expressing so much love for our community.”

Pausing to wipe away another tear, she added, “For us it is paramount to continue working and prepare food for the soldiers.”

Around 145,000 Druze live in Israel.

Druze serve in senior positions of public and military life, and the bond between Jewish and Druze soldiers is referred to as the “covenant of blood.” Druze speak Arabic but are not Muslim and very secretive of their religious beliefs. The Druze communities of Israel, Lebanon and Syria regard themselves as descendants of the Biblical Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses.

Israeli Reserve Soldiers Stumble Upon 1,500 Year-Old Lamp

By Pesach Benson • 26 December, 2023

Jerusalem, 26 December, 2023 (TPS) — Two Israeli reserve soldiers unexpectedly stumbled upon a small, well-preserved Byzantine oil lamp at an army staging area in southern Israel near the Gaza border, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced on Tuesday.

The find, by Nathaniel Melchior and Alon Segev, part of the 404th Battalion within the 282nd Fire Brigade, sparked a chain of events that led to the 1,500 year-old candle’s safe handover to the Antiquities Authority.

“During one of our wanderings in the field, I came across pottery lying upside down, and its round shape attracted me,” Melchior said. “It was covered in mud, I cleaned it and after I realized what it was about, I called the Antiquities Authority.”

Simultaneously, Segev shared an image of the discovery on a Facebook group. The photo drew a lot of attention and recommendations to contact the Antiquities Authority.

Antiquities Authority archaeologist Sarah Tal identified the artifact as a “sandal candle” from the Byzantine period. Tal personally retrieved the lamp and presented the soldiers with a certificate of appreciation.

“The war often exposes us to extraordinary situations, even on the archaeological front. The land of Israel, particularly this surrounding region, holds a rich history and ancient treasures,” said Eli Eskosido, director of the Antiquities Authority.

“In the event of finding an ancient relic, it is crucial to notify the inspectors so that researchers can gather as much information as possible about the site and its historical significance,” he emphasized.

Intel Investing $25 Billion in Israeli Manufacturing Facility

By Pesach Benson • 26 December, 2023

Jerusalem, 26 December, 2023 (TPS) — Intel Israel and Israeli government authorities announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility in Kiryat Gat on Tuesday morning with a $25 billion investment.

“The global company Intel’s choice to approve the unprecedented investment of $25 billion right here, in Israel, is important and significant,” Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich said in a joint statement with the Economy Ministry and Israel Tax Authority.

“Such an investment, at a time when Israel is facing a war against absolute evil, a war in which good is obliged to defeat evil… is an expression of confidence in the State of Israel and the Israeli economy,” Smotrich stressed.

The Intel Corporation is an American multinational corporation and one of the world’s largest and most prominent semiconductor chip manufacturers. It already operates a factory in Kiryat Gat producing semiconductor chips using advanced manufacturing processes.

Under the terms of the agreement, Israel will provide Intel with a $3.2 billion grant over several years. Intel will undertake to hire thousands of Israeli high-tech workers, and also buy products and services from Israeli companies and contractors. The company’s obligations to meet the goals are a condition for receiving the grant.

The new factory is expected to begin operating in 2028. Intel will operate it at least till 2035.

Intel’s involvement in Israel began in the 1970s when it established its first development center in Haifa. Over the years, Intel has expanded its presence in Israel with multiple R&D facilities in Haifa, Jerusalem, and Petah Tikvah. These centers are involved in developing and designing advanced technologies for various products, including processors, chipsets, communication technologies, and software.
