Florida Governor Signs Law Preempting Local Covid Edicts

0

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis moved to suspend all remaining COVID-19 restrictions imposed by communities across his state.

He signed into law on Monday freshly passed legislation giving him sweeping powers to invalidate local emergency measures put in place during the pandemic — including mask mandates, limitations on business operations and the shuttering of schools.

In addition to signing the law, which goes into effect July 1, the Republican governor also signed a pair of executive orders to move more quickly, meaning that existing coronavirus measures enacted by local governments — such as requiring masks — would be abolished immediately.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future,” DeSantis said, “but I think this creates a structure that’s going to be a little bit more respectful, I think, of people’s businesses, jobs, schools and personal freedom.”

Some municipalities have already lifted restrictions on their own. But Miami-Dade County, for example, still requires masks in all indoor public spaces and outdoors if people are within 10 feet (about three meters) of each other.

The governor’s executive order now rescinds those rules. However, private businesses — including theme parks and hospitals — can impose restrictions on their own.

Some mayors, particularly those aligned with the Democratic Party, have decried Republican-led preemptions as a power grab against local government’s ability to control a potential resurgence of the coronavirus but also restrict their ability to respond to future public health emergencies.

“It feels like he’s spiking the ball on the 10-yard line,” said Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, whose city is within a county that was among the hardest hit by the coronavirus outbreak. “He’s been following political ideology more than science during this whole pandemic.”

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman suggested that it was thanks to local governments that the death toll wasn’t higher.

“To be clear, cities like St. Pete, Tampa, Orlando, Miami and Miami Beach, saved Florida and the governor’s behind throughout this pandemic. Can you imagine if each city had been led by Ron DeSantis? How many lives would have been lost? What would our economy look like today?” Kriseman tweeted.

Even as DeSantis urged Floridians to get vaccinated, he has become a nationally prominent voice against mask mandates and other precautions that federal health officials have recommended in the continuing battle against the pandemic.

To date, more than 2.2 million Floridians have been infected with the disease. More than 35,000 have died, but in per capita deaths Florida has fared better than most states. It has seen 166 per 100,000 as compared with the highest rate, in New Jersey, of 287 per 100,000.

While daily infection and deaths have gone down, the pandemic is far from over. On Monday, there were some 3,100 Floridians hospitalized with COVID-19 as the primary diagnosis.

The law codifies much of the actions DeSantis had already taken, including preempting local governments from enforcing mask mandates, but it also would give the governor — DeSantis and those after him — broad authority during future public health crises to set aside local edicts that do not conform with those issued by the state.

Keeping such measures in place undermines confidence in the coronavirus vaccines, the governor said at a news conference in St. Petersburg.

“Folks that are saying that they need to be policing people at this point,” DeSantis said, “are saying you don’t believe in the vaccines, you don’t believe in the data, you don’t believe in the science.”

Even as DeSantis advertised the move as a way to protect businesses and workers hurt by pandemic-related shutdowns and business restrictions, the new law would also ban businesses from requiring patrons to show proof of vaccinations in order to get service.

The ban was already in place under an executive order he signed in late March. That order also barred government entities from issuing so-called “vaccine passports.”

The impending law directs state health officials to draft a public health emergency management plan to serve as a template for future outbreaks. It also requires state officials to keep at the ready a supply of protective equipment.

DeSantis has bristled against federal mandates and has followed his own priorities on some pandemic-related matters, including distributing vaccines to the state’s oldest residents ahead of essential workers, such as grocery story workers, who federal officials suggested should get priority.

“Governor DeSantis failed to lead during the pandemic, leaving local officials as the last line of defense against the pandemic, forcing them to make the hard decisions to save lives,” alleged Democratic U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, a former Florida governor.

Crist is expected to announce as soon as Tuesday whether he will make a bid to oust DeSantis from the governor’s mansion.

Shaked in leaked recordings: ‘We won’t go with the left; Netanyahu and his wife are like dictators’

0

Yamina MK heard in recordings talking about the political picture,
the Prime Minister and former political partner Bezalel Smotrich.

Recordings of MK Ayelet Shaked (Yamina) published on Monday evening by Amit Segal of Channel 12 News reveal her true feelings about which kind of government should be formed.

Shaked is heard commenting on the possibility that the mandate to form a government would be given to Naftali Bennett.

“We’ll campaign. Bennett first in a rotation for a year and a half, say, and then Bibi for another two and a half years, that would be best for everyone. If Naftali receives the mandate from the right, he will not go with the left with the mandate from the right in his hand. It will not happen,” she says.

Shaked does not spare Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from criticism and says, “Because of his trial he will go even further to the right. It is the opposite of Sharon. It is true that all he cares about now is the trial. Unequivocally he does not care about anything. It is true.”

“But it is true that all his considerations, and his behavior, and his conduct, everything is about the trial. It’s true he has to go. He has to go. But I told Gideon [Sa’ar], there is a country [to run]. So what now, do you create such an absurd coalition, with these people, just because he has to go? He got 30 seats.”

She also expresses herself in an unusual way towards the Prime Minister’s wife. “He is afraid to go to a pardon and plea deal because he is afraid of it, he is afraid that in the end he will have to admit guilt. And it will not work out. He is a very, very paranoid person, so he is afraid of it.”

“And for the presidency, he wants to stay in power. He has a lust for power and authority, he and his wife. They’re like dictators. Like dictators, they are not ready to step aside. We do not have that.”

Shaked also talks about the contacts with the “bloc of change” and says, “We are really trying to avoid it. But if we had not progressed in this channel, then Netanyahu would not have given up, you understand? If Netanyahu had not known that we have a government on the other side, then he would not have made the concession. He would have gone to a fifth election.”

“He sees reality, and because Bennett has an alternative government, he was willing to give him a year and a half. Otherwise it would not have happened. It never would have happened. He would have taken us to another election. Bennett’s move here rescued us.”

“We are paying a heavy price for it among our base, but I hope that if we can form a government, then we can explain it,” Shaked adds.

“We will be most happy if he gets Bezalel [Smotrich] to change his mind. Either with Bennett or if he gives the mandate to Bennett. But if he gives the mandate to Bennett, and we fail to form a right-wing government because Gideon and [Benny] Gantz won’t change their mind, we are not prepared to go to [new] elections.”

“So we will go for the option with the left, and we will try to persuade Bezalel to come with us, so that we do not have to take Ra’am.”

“Sorry, this is not an ideological matter; So the state does not matter to him. If the state is important to him, if he thinks that the state should not rely on [MK Mansour] Abbas, then let us prevent us from leaning on Abbas.”

“You understand that if there is an election, the left can, with considerable probability, get 61 seats with the Arabs. It already achieved that in round two and in round three. So what did we do? Now because Netanyahu has legitimized the Arabs, no one has a problem forming a government with them. This is the great damage that has already been done. This is the great damage,” Shaked clarifies.

On Gideon Sa’ar, she says, “The Likud agreed to cover his debts. I do not know how that is possible. But they really put pressure on him in this matter as well. I sat with him for hours, hours. I sit with him for an hour almost every other day, and try and try. First and foremost, he is correct.”

“The truth is, Netanyahu also has to go. He is right. But what to do. So I tell him, there is an outline that he will not have a year [in office] and we will also limit his term. This will be his last term. Accept him for another term. You should know that Gideon and Evet [Liberman] truly think that Netanyahu is a threat to the State of Israel. They are convinced of it. It doesn’t matter, we do not think the same.”

Shaked also comments on someone who until recently was a close political partner – Bezalel Smotrich. “There is sanctification of God’s name, and there is blasphemy.  Naftali and I listen to the rabbis much more.”

“Smotrich is the one who does not listen to the rabbis. He considers himself as someone who listens to the rabbis all the time, even though we know it is not true.”

Petition to Supreme Court: Put an end to PA invasion near Ariel

0

The state has enacted an order against PA takeover of government-owned lands, but the Civil Administration has failed to enforce it.

In recent months, the PA, aided by the EU, has carried out a continuous incursion into Israeli government-owned lands in the direction of the industrial area of ??the city of Ariel, in Area C, that’s supposed to be under full Israeli control.

Areas which have been taken over are located on the outskirts of an antiquities site called Khirbet Kurkosh. The process began with construction of roads in the area and continued with land development work and the planting of olive trees.

Now the construction of a large electricity infrastructure, at a considerable distance from the PA-controlled village where the incursion is coming from, is nearing completion. The area in discussion is defined as survey lands – state lands whose registration has not yet been completed.

The Palestinian Authority and its partners in the European Union are also being accused of “years of exploiting bureaucratic and legal barriers to prevent law enforcement against illegal takeovers [of Israeli land].”

The petition to the Supreme Court emphasizes that despite six separate appeals demanding enforcement of the law at each stage of the invasion, the process has continued, with no legal action in sight.

In 2018, the “Order for the Disposal of New Buildings” was enacted by the defense establishment and the State Attorney’s Office as part of the “Campaign in Area C”, which allows for the demolition of new housing constructed without a permit within a six-months period and 96 hours of the order being given.

Fowing the enactment of the order, left-wing associations petitioned against it, but the High Court rejected the petition and allowed its use.

However, despite the Court’s ruling, the state has made minimal use of the order, even though it has been proven to be a highly effective and efficient tool in the fight against illegal construction.

In the petition filed by the Regavim movement and the Samaria Regional Council, attorneys Avi Segal and Yael Sinmon requested that the Supreme Court order the authorities to use the “order for the removal of new buildings” against the invasion of areas near the city of Ariel.

The head of the Samaria Council, Yossi Dagan, said, “The security cabinet declared a campaign on Area C, and it is time for law enforcement agencies to act accordingly – in a systemic fashion. The Palestinian Authority’s rampage must be stopped and a clear and determined message conveyed.”

“This is a case that illustrates the PA’s systemic, budgeted and planned takeover of Area C, which seeks to move the center of gravity of the development of localities from Area B to C, in order to establish facts on the ground and reduce Israel’s security and political freedom of action in strategic Area C, including future agreements,” reads the petition.

Jews troubled after court releases man arrested for Bronx synagogue attacks

0

Jordan Burnette, 29, is facing numerous charges in connection with the incidents, including burglary, aggravated harassment, criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

A 29-year-old man from the Riverdale section of the Bronx, N.Y., was arrested on May 1 by the New York City Police Department for a string of attacks on synagogues there.

Jordan Burnette is facing a number of charges in connection with the incidents, including burglary, aggravated harassment, criminal trespass and criminal mischief. Several of these are being charged as hate crimes.

The Bronx District Attorney’s office says Burnette “was released on supervised release,” and is due back in court on May 7.

Speaking to JNS, Evan Bernstein, CEO and national director of Community Security Service, said that Jewish organizations and individuals are having a hard time reconciling the idea that Burnette was released without bail after attacking places of worship.

“They feel they did all the right things and the NYPD did everything that they needed to do” to apprehend the suspect, and “now he was let go,” he said. “It is impacting the community in a very negative way. Emotionally, psychologically and from a security perspective, it’s very concerning.”

Noting that several volunteers from his organization confronted the suspect on April 24 outside the Riverdale Jewish Center, Bernstein explained that intellectually, they understand why he was released without bail, “but emotionally, it’s hard to swallow that that person is back on the streets in some capacity.”

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean and director of global social action for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, also expressed his concern about the attacker’s release.

“Change the no-bail laws or New York may become the next Paris! New York must not allow hate-mongers to attack houses of worship with impunity,” he said.

“Twenty years ago, we witnessed similar scenarios occur in France, where judges refused to hold those who vandalized synagogues accountable. That soon escalated to fire-bombings violence and even murder.”

Cooper added that the NYPD “did its job and arrested the perpetrator of multiple hate crimes, only to see him released by a judge. Criminals, including anti-Semites, will act with increasing impunity putting all in danger unless the laws treat every hate crime seriously.”

During the Saturday press conference announcing Burnette’s arrest, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information John Miller said “this particular individual has been linked to the attack and is going to be charged with multiple attacks, so, hopefully, life will resume back to normal, and people will be able to worship without fear.”

European intel agencies find Iran sought nuclear weapons

0

A German state report says “proliferation-relevant states are making efforts to expand on their conventional arsenal of weapons through the production or constant modernization of weapons of mass destruction.”

Iran sought on multiple occasions in 2020 to obtain technology for its nuclear-weapons program, intelligence agencies from the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany said, according to a Fox News report on Monday.

The General Intelligence and Security Service of the Netherlands stopped “multiple acquisition attempts,” the agency wrote in its April report.

“The joint counter-proliferation unit of the AIVD [the General Intelligence and Security Service] and the MIVD [the country’s Military Intelligence and Security Service] is investigating how countries try to obtain the knowledge and goods they need to make weapons of mass destruction.”

“Countries such as Syria, Pakistan, Iran and North Korea also tried to acquire such goods and technology in Europe and the Netherlands last year,” said the report.

The Swedish Security Service said in its 2020 intelligence report that Iran tried to obtain technology from its country for its nuclear-weapons program.

“Iran also conducts industrial espionage, which is mainly targeted against Swedish high-tech industry and Swedish products, which can be used in nuclear weapons programs. Iran is investing heavy resources in this area, and some of the resources are used in Sweden,” the report said.

Germany’s Bavarian “Verfassungsschutz”, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (a euphemism for the Secret Service), the domestic intelligence agency for the German state, said in its 2020 report: “Proliferation-relevant states like Iran, North Korea, Syria and Pakistan are making efforts to expand on their conventional arsenal of weapons through the production or constant modernization of weapons of mass destruction.”

These Israel Startups Are Helping to Improve Americans’ Health

0

Jerusalem, 3 May, 2021 (TPS) — The record for the volume of investments in Israeli startups in the field of digital health was again broken in the first quarter of 2021 with $31.6 billion being raised for startups in the industry in just 90 days.

The peak was recorded in parallel with the world’s gradual exit from the Coronavirus pandemic and reflects the long-term effects of rising health awareness by investors and the general public.

At the same time, as many investments are coming in, health and insurance organizations are accelerating the rapid adoption of new technologies, most of which are based on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This appears to be the beginning of a new era for digital health, and the involvement of Israeli startups in the American health market has become more significant than ever.

An example of this can be seen in the integration of the AI developed by Israeli startup Aidoc in the American healthcare system. Last month, Aidoc signed a partnership with Radiology Partners, the largest radiologists’ association in the US, which operates in 10% of all US hospitals.

Aidoc has developed a system based on Artificial Intelligence for analyzing radiology images. The company’s platform interfaces with the hospital’s server and automatically checks patients’ CT scans in real-time. The system knows how to detect abnormal findings and alerts the radiologist about emergencies that require urgent treatment, thus saving valuable time in waiting for human decryption, which may take several hours depending on the number of people waiting.

The algorithms are based on in-depth learning and Big-Data analysis of millions of photographs and scans in order to extract patterns that characterize abnormalities and medical conditions. This improves the functioning of radiologists who are sometimes required to manually go through hundreds of scans a day.

The FDA-approved package of solutions introduced by Aidoc and its integration into the healthcare system provides physicians with a safety net in case human work limitations lead to missing important findings or slowness in reading the scan.

Elad Wallach, CEO of Aidoc, said that “the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence technologies by the American healthcare system has immense value. We have reached an era where artificial intelligence tools serve as critical skill multipliers for physicians, enabling improvement in patient care and reducing overall health costs.”

“The new partnership with Radiology Partners will accelerate the adoption of technology in the US market and set a new standard of treatment in the field of radiology,” he said.

Another startup, DayTwo, was established on the basis of a groundbreaking study by Israeli researchers Prof. Eran Segal and Prof. Eran Elinav of the Weizmann Institute. They found that the same foods, eaten by different people, cause different blood sugar reactions in each of the participants. This discovery of differences in the body’s responses to food has led to the development of technology that allows for the prediction of individual sugar responses in the blood and offers dietary recommendations that are individually tailored to each person to avoid abnormal jumps that are harmful to one’s health.

This area has received increasing attention from the US health care system following data showing that a third of the Corona deaths in the US have also dealt with sugar problems, which has pushed up sugar management costs and made dealing with diabetes a very costly problem in the US.

According to Adi Lev, VP of Research and Development at DayTwo, “we see that our algorithm, written by our developers in Tel Aviv, leads to significant improvements in our patient’s health, the balance of sugar levels, inhibits the development of diabetes, a significant decrease in medication and other medical indicators.”

“For example, this week we heard about a user of a DayTwo program in Michigan who canceled her gastric bypass, it feels like we are creating a product here with meaning,” he said.

To make the scientific breakthrough accessible to users in Israel and the US, DayTwo has developed a mobile app that allows you to enter the desired meal composition and receive a real-time customized forecast of the sugar jumps after eating it. The predictive power also rests on the decoding of one’s microbiome, which is the unique intestinal bacterial composition that is determined with the help of a home test.

The venture has an interesting cast of investors, including Omri Caspi, a former NBA player and captain of the Israeli basketball team, Marius Nacht, one of the founders of Check Point, the Johnson & Johnson Corporation, the American hospital chain Mayo Clinic and other venture capital funds.

Ron DeSantis To Sign Bill Banning Biological Males From Competing In Girls’ Sports

0

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, announced in an interview late last week that he would sign a bill banning biological males from competing in girls’ sports.

DeSantis made the announcement during a town hall event with Fox News host Laura Ingraham.

“Governor DeSantis, a bill of a similar nature is about to cross your desk,” Ingraham said. “Are you going to sign it?”

“Oh, yes. We’re going to protect our girls,” DeSantis said.

“I have a four-year-old daughter and a one-year-old daughter, and they’re very athletic. And we want to have opportunities for our girls. They deserve an even playing field.”

“And that’s what we’re doing, with what Mississippi did, with what Florida did, and I know what other states are going to do. So, I look forward to being able to sign that into law.”

Multiple Reports Dating Back Years Categorized Meron as Potential Deathtrap

0

As funerals for the 45 victims of the Lag B’Omer stampede in Meron continued, the Israeli government was finding itself in the hot seat.

As many as five reports dating back to 2008 described the annual celebration at the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai as an accident waiting to happen.

A 2008 report by former State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss identified multiple potentially deadly flaws at the site and insisted that they be corrected, reported the Jerusalem Post.

Lindenstrauss expressed serious concerns about the size of the crowd that flocked to Meron, law enforcement’s inability to limit attendance and poor crowd safety protocols, all stemming from the fact that no single agency was responsible for coordinating the annual pilgrimage.

“Fire safety and escape routes are deficient and after emergency services have been issuing warnings for years, no actions have been taken by the religious institutions who manage the site in order to rectify the problems and ensure public safety,” said the report.

Lindenstrauss’s report triggered an investigation by the Ministry of Finance’s Government Companies Authority in early 2009, reported Ynet.

In a second report issued in 2011, Lindenstrauss noted that only minor improvements had been made and that there was still no one taking charge of the Lag B’Omer festivities, which prompted a request to have the government task the local regional council with the site’s maintenance.

Then-Finance Minister Yair Lapid placed the Meron compound under the jurisdiction of the Ministry for Religious Affairs in 2013. Four years later, its safety was called into question once more by the Knesset’s Internal Affairs and Environment Committee, with MK Dudi Amsalem asking how 300,000 people could be allowed to attend a massive event that had been coordinated without a single permit in place to ensure its safety.

When the issue arose yet again in 2018, MK Aryeh Deri, who was responsible for Israel’s religious sites, noted the dangers of having a large bonfire in a small, congested area, and suggested instead that the crowds be diverted to surrounding areas to watch the flames from afar.

Amid the charges of negligence being hurled at the Israeli government, Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Yossi Daitsh said that it was a miracle that there was only one deadly crush of people on the overcrowded mountain with untenable congestion occurring in several other spots.

Ynet reported that Daitsh was in Meron several hours before the stampede with his young son and brother in law and were nearly crushed as they stood at the entrance to the compound as thousands of people were pushing behind them.

“There were barriers and a small and narrow passageway,” said Daitsh. “A policeman told us to go back and threatened to spray us with pepper spray if we did not do as he said. I asked him if he was insane. I said there were people there, children, they would be crushed and people would die.”

Daitsh said he asked police to let some of the people through to alleviate the pressure, but his request fell on deaf ears.

“Then all hell broke loose,” said Daitsh. “People tried to get away and climbed on top of us.”

The overcrowding had Daitsh and his family leaving Meron, but not before he stopped to speak with on-site police.

“I told the policemen that those narrow bottlenecks would cause a disaster,” said Daitsh. “I told them to take the right precautions. There was a sense of chaos and a lack of order.”

Current State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman has promised to investigate the stampede, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Public Security Minister Amir Ohana both saying that a full independent examination of the tragedy would be conducted, according
to Haaretz.

“The Mount Meron disaster is one of the worst that has befallen the State of Israel,” said Netanyahu. “We will prepare for a thorough, serious and in-depth investigation to ensure that such a disaster is not repeated.”

Netanyahu called for Sunday to be observed as a national day of mourning and prayer with flags to be flown at half mast at public buildings, military bases and Israeli consulates and embassies worldwide.

Poles react to Meron disaster: ‘The less Jews there are, the better for the world’

0

Comments section to article on Meron disaster in Polish media swamped with anti-Semitic hate.

As the Jewish People mourns for the 45 victims of the catastrophe that occurred in Meron on Lag b’Omer, many Poles have expressed their delight at “a world with less Jews in it.”

The Polish news site Interia.pl, one of the largest and most popular news sites in Poland, published an article on the Meron disaster and the national day of mourning declared in its aftermath.

Although the site’s editors included a message at the end of the article asking that readers refrain from posting comments that included expressions of hate, the comments section of the article was soon swamped with precisely such reactions, with readers writing of their “joy” at hearing of the disaster, and of their hatred of Jews.

Along with such sentiments were “traditional” anti-Semitic allegations, such as those accusing Jews of controlling the Polish government and of being behind all the “wars” and “persecution” in the world.

“Finally something bad is happening in Israel!” rejoiced one poster. “At last G-d is punishing this evil nation of thieves, criminals, and swindlers!”

“The less Jews there are, the better for the world,” wrote another Pole. “If only we could get such news every day,” wrote another.

Other comments sarcastically remarked that, “Israel is now trying to figure out which country to blame for the disaster,” and “funny how Iran isn’t being held responsible.”
