Recall Gavin2020 says it has collected 1.95 million signatures – well over the necessary 1.5 million
The activists working to set off a special election in California this year in a bid to take down its Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom announced recently they had collected “more than enough” signatures towards this goal.
To set off a vote this year, they need to collect just below 1,5 million signatures before March 17.
On Sunday, however, Randy Economy, an organizer of the RecallGavin2020 effort, told the media the activists had now collected 1.95 million signatures.
“That is more than enough to be able to have this initiative qualified for a special election later this year,” he declared, as cited by the New York Post.
The vote is not yet set in stone, however, as the signatures would have to be verified for validity.
In early February, state authorities said 83 percent of the signatures collected at the moment were valid; assuming the ratio persists — which cannot be taken for granted — the campaign is now sitting at about 1.6 million signatures.
California’s besieged governor came under fire last year for his handling of the COVID-19 coronavirus in the state, one of the worst across the US, which saw him slap stringent restrictions on businesses across the state.
In November, Newsom was caught on camera flouting these restrictions as he attended a lavish party at a restaurant.
