California fire map: Updates and expected dates of full containment

Here are the latest updates on prominent wildfires in California and expected dates of full containment, according to fire officials.

Mendocino Complex Fire

Location: Highway CA-20 at MP 39, Old Lake County Highway, Blue Lake, 8 mi NE of Ukiah (Ranch Fire); Old River Road, 6 miles north of Hopland (River Fire).
Started: Jul. 27
Burned: Ranch Fire 282,479 acres, 62 percent contained; the River Fire 48,920, 93 percent contained.
Expected date of full containment: Sep. 1

California’s largest wildfire in state history encompasses both the Ranch Fire and the River Fire. The Ranch Fire grew approximately 6,000 acres in the last 24 hours. The River Fire has not grown in several days. Firefighters are working around structures in the Lake Pilsbury area, clearing and improving lines around homes. They are reinforcing the line running from the Eel River northeast to south of the community. Cooler temperatures and lighter winds Sunday should aid firefighting efforts. Smoke will continue to be heavy in communities near and east of the Ranch Fire including Clearlake, Stonyford and east to Willows. There should be moderate smoke to the west in Ukiah, Hopland and Willits. The north and central Sacramento Valley will see widespread haze and smoky conditions.

Holy Fire

Location: Holy Jim/Trabuco Canyon
Started: Aug. 6
Burned: 22,714 acres, 14 structures, 41 percent contained.
Expected date of full containment: Aug. 17

Thousands of homes are threatened by this fire and mandatory evacuations remain in effect for Glen Eden, Riverside Community (near Lake Elsinore), El Cariso, Blue Jay and Rancho Capistrano. Evacuations for the Sycamore Creek and Machado communities have been lifted.

Location: Hwy 299 and Carr Powerhouse Rd, Whiskeytown
Started: Jul 23
Burned: 191,211 acres, 8 fatalities, 1,077 residences, 22 commercial structures, 500 outbuildings; 59 percent contained.
Expected date of full containment: No estimate

Continued hot and dry conditions with gusty winds calls for a Red Flag Warning for the fire through 11 p.m. this evening. The fire’s spread is driven by the fuel and topography of the region, but firefighters continue to
improve containment lines. Mandatory evacuations remain for Whiskeytown Park and Rainbow Lake in Shasta County and Trinity Dam at Trinity Dam Blvd. in Trinity County. Currently there is no estimated date for full containment of this fire.

Ferguson Fire

Location: Highway 140 and Savages Trading Post
Started: Jul 13
Burned: 95,946 acres, 2 fatalities,10 structures; 83 percent contained.
Expected date of full containment: Aug. 15

The Ferguson Fire is now the largest fire in the Sierra National Forest’s History. Firefighters expect the fire to become more active during the heat of the day Sunday, as they try to prevent the further spread into Yosemite National Park. The uncontained fire along Wawona Road remains the prime focus of operations. A large portion of Yosemite National Park is open. Tioga Road from Tioga Pass to White Wolf is open to all visitors and vehicles. Most of the trails and campgrounds along this route, including the Tuolumne Meadows Campground are open. Visitor services along Tioga Road, including the High Sierra Camps and the Tuolumne Meadows Store are also open.
