California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, posted and then deleted a tweet late on Sunday as questions swirl about her husband’s whereabouts.
“California Governor Gavin Newsom has disappeared from public view for 10 days and abruptly canceled plans to attend the COP26 climate summit in Scotland over unexplained ‘family obligations,’” the Daily Mail reported.
“Newsom was last seen in public on October 27, receiving a COVID-19 booster shot in Oakland.”
Newsom’s office did not respond to questions from The Associated Press over what the governor did last week.
Reporter Sophia Bollag responded to the tweet from Siebel Newsom before the tweet was deleted. “Gavin Newsom’s office has refused to say what ‘family obligations’ caused him to cancel his trip to the big UN climate change conference in Scotland,” Bollag wrote. “Seems like that’s what his wife, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, is referencing here.”
Siebel Newsom wrote the following in a tweet late on Sunday evening:
It’s funny how certain folks can’t handle the truth. When someone cancels something, maybe they’re just in the office working; maybe in their free time they’re at home with their family, at their kids’ sports matches, or dining out with their wife. Please stop hating and get a life.
Newsom spokeswoman Erin Mellon had previously written in a statement: “Due to family obligations, Governor Newsom will no longer be traveling to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and will instead be participating virtually, focusing on California’s landmark climate change policies.”
The Sacramento Bee added:
A California delegation, now led by Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, will still go to the conference. Fifteen lawmakers still plan to go, alongside several members of the Newsom administration, including Environmental Protection Secretary Jared Blumenfeld and Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot.
Newsom’s wife, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, has also canceled her trip to the conference, Mellon said.
World leaders were meeting in Scotland to discuss strategies to slow the pace of global warming. Prior to the governor’s cancellation, former Gov. Jerry Brown and environmental activists said Newsom would play an important role by presenting the Golden State’s ambitious policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a model for other governments.
Newsom’s last public appearance was on October 27 when he received “a Moderna vaccine booster at an Asian Health Services’ clinic in Oakland’s Chinatown, encouraging eligible Californians to get their booster and keep immunity strong, especially as we enter the winter months,” the governor’s office said in a statement.
“It’s imperative that we all keep our immunities strong in preparation for the winter cold, flu and now COVID season, especially for those at increased risk,” Newsom said at the time.
“Getting vaccinated and keeping our immunity strong through boosters is a vital step we can take to protect ourselves, our loved ones and our community — it remains the best way to end this pandemic. Getting a booster is safe, easy, free, and you don’t even have to stick to your original vaccine. This is your chance to continue to keep yourself and your community healthy.”
