Guatemala will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16th, just two days after the United States is scheduled to move its embassy, President Jimmy Morales announced at the annual meeting of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Washington DC Sunday.
“I would like to thank President Trump for leading this initiative,” said Morales, “His brave decision encouraged us to do the right thing.”
Shortly before Morales made the announcement, he met with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of the convention.
Netanyahu thanked Morales “for everything you’re doing, for recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.”
Morales replied, “It is an honor and it is the right thing to do.”
The two leaders discussed deepening bilateral ties and cooperation and exchanged mutual invitations to visit their countries.
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat thanked Morales for his decision, tweeting: “Thank you for your friendship and your courage.”
