Jerusalem, 28 April, 2022 (TPS) — The IDF has announced it has decided to recruit reserve battalions in the coming weeks amid existing security tensions and a fear of further deterioration.
“The recruitment will enable the continued effort to prevent the emergence of terrorists and the passage of illegal residents in the border area in Judea and Samaria,” the IDF stated Thursday.
After several lethal terror attacks in Israel in recent weeks that claimed the lives of 14 people, the IDF launched Operation Wave Breaker, which includes deployment of forces along the security barrier around the Judea and Samaria area.
Six reserve battalions will be recruited in a number of rounds, which will enable the best deployment of the forces in the Central Command and the maintenance of operational competence and the training routine in the IDF.
Some of the battalions will be assigned to the Central Command and some will replace units in the Northern and Southern Commands.
The reserve units will enable the regular IDF units to return to their routine of training and will free them up for other pertinent missions.
Some of the reserve battalions will be summoned by emergency order, the IDF said.
Israel launched Operation Wave Breaker after it experienced four severe terror attacks in recent weeks. In the latest attack, a terrorist from Jenin shot and killed three Israelis in the heart of Tel Aviv. Before that, a terrorist from Yabed shot and killed five people in the city of Bnei Brak. In the second attack, two Islamist terrorists shot and killed two Israelis in the city of Hadera. In Be’er Sheva, a terrorist stabbed and murdered four Israelis. Jerusalem has been the scene of several attacks as well.
The country’s security establishment is bracing for further violence, especially toward the end of the Muslim month of Ramadan.
Operation Wave Breaker is expected to last at least until after Israel’s Independence Day.
