Netanyahu in Brussels: Europe Will Eventually Follow Trump’s Lead

Written by TPS on December 11, 2017

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called on European nations to join US President Donald Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and rejected European criticism that Trump’s announcement would ground the Israel-Palestinian peace process.

Speaking during the first visit by an Israeli prime minister to Brussels since 1995, Netanyahu said Trump’s declaration “makes peace possible” between Israelis and Palestinians because it is a sober reflection of reality.

“It makes peace possible because recognizing reality is the substance of peace, the foundation of peace” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, in a joint press conference in Brussels to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini before meeting with EU foreign ministers. “President Trump put the facts down on the table for what they are. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and it is evident to everyone.”

“I believe that, even though we don’t have an agreement yet, this is what will happen in the future. I believe that all, or most, of the European countries, will have their embassies in Jerusalem, recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and engage robustly with us for security, prosperity, and peace,” Netanyahu added.

Speaking after Netanyahu, Mogherini reiterated that the European Union remains fully committed to the two-state solution.

“The only realistic solution to the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is based on the two States, with Jerusalem the capital of both according to the 1967 borders.

We also condemn “in the strongest possible way any attack on Jews, anywhere in the world, including Europe, as well as Israel and Israeli citizens,” Mogherini said.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) is scheduled to address the European Parliament in January.
