Sears files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, to close 142 more stores

Sears Holdings, whose presence permeated American life for generations, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection early Monday in a last-ditch attempt to avoid entombment in the graveyard of once-great retailers that failed to adapt to the digital age.

For Sears — which was the largest retailer in the nation before the rise of Walmart and, later, Amazon — bankruptcy marks the culmination of years of decline defined by store closures, sales declines, cost cuts and borrowing.

The company, which also owns discount retailer Kmart, has fallen into disrepair amid a perilous retail landscape in which customers increasingly shop online or seek out more-appealing alternatives.

For Kmart, known for its one-time “blue-light specials,” catchy jingles, and collections created by celebrities, the case marks a second brush with death. Kmart merged with Sears in 2005 after surviving bankruptcy once before.

Sears Holdings will close another 142 stores by about the end of the year, on top of a recently announced round of 46 store closures, as part of the bankruptcy. The company has 687 stores and about 68,000 employees.

Police: Livery driver beat man walking to synagogue in Brooklyn

Another member of the Hasidic community tried to help – the attacker then chased after him.

An arrest was made quickly on the scene. Eyewitness News is told Farrukh Afzal from Staten Island drove for a car service in Brooklyn, and has been arrested numerous times.

Schwartz says Afzal yelled ‘Allah’ during the assault.

“I went to him when he was handcuffed, ‘what did I do to you that you tried to murder me? Tell me.’ He didn’t answer back,” added Schwartz.

Schwartz says he has no idea why the man attacked him, but says he thinks it was because he is Jewish.

Initially, detectives investigated the incident as possible road rage between the victim and the driver.

Police say hate crime charges may be filed.

The car service where he worked informed Eyewitness News that he has since been let go.

Palestinians Attack Supreme Court Judge David Mintz On Samaria Road

By Mara Vigevani/TPS • 15 October, 2018

Supreme Court Judge David Mintz was the victim of an attempted attacked on Monday morning by three Palestinians while driving on a Samaria road north of Jerusalem.

According to the police, a Palestinian car blocked his vehicle when three suspects then started making their way towards him, carrying hammers. When he noticed the suspects, he fled the scene.

Upon receipt of the report, an investigation was opened,” the police spokesman said.

Residents of the Dolev settlement, situated close to the scene of the attempted attack, said that attacks on the road had lessened over the years.

However, according to the spokesperson for the Dolev community, in the past few weeks, there has been a renewal of attacks that “we can not accept.”

“We expect the security forces to treat such events as serious security incidents and deal with them,” the Dolev spokesperson said. “At the same time, we are grateful to the army commanders in our region, who work day and night to maintain the peace in the settlements, and contribute to our sense of security and our daily lives.”

MK Moti Yogev (Jewish Home), a resident of Dolev and Mintz’s neighbor, said last week that he was also involved in an attempted attack, which ended with the theft of a vehicle.

“I am pleased that Judge Mintz was unharmed. I trust the defense establishment will provide the appropriate security response in Judea and Samaria.”

He also added that he hopes the justice system will now use deterrent punishments for terrorists that will “add security and save lives”.

Russian Chief Rabbi Alarmed By Treatment Of Chabad Representatives By Swedish Government

Russian Chief Rabbi Alarmed By Treatment Of Chabad Representatives By Swedish Government

In an urgent letter to Sweden’s government officials, Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar expressed “grave concern” for the wellbeing of Sweden’s Chabad emissaries, Rabbi Alexander and Leah Namdar, and their family.

Lazar wrote the letter to Sweden’s ambassador to Russia after learning that the Namdars, who have raised their family of 11 in Gothenburg, were fined €73,000 as a penalty for homeschooling their children. The Namdars have been serving Gothenburg’s Jewish community for the past 27 years.

“Sweden has until recently been known as a liberal, democratic society that respects individuality and freedom of religion,” Lazar wrote. He pointed to Sweden’s law that permits homeschooling in special circumstances. “It is alarming therefore that the appeals court has not considered their religious concerns and the security aspect at all.” He cited an attack on a local synagogue by young Muslims last December.

The latest development in a saga that has been unfolding over years, the Namdars have been relentlessly pursued by the local government over the Jewish education they’ve provided their children. For both religious reasons and security concerns they have chosen to homeschool their children. Namdar would not rule out anti-Semitism, telling lubavitch.com that “this preposterous fine has shown Sweden to be a very inhospitable place.”

As long as there are Jews in Gothenburg who depend on their services, they plan to stay put, committed to their life calling as Chabad emissaries. Their children speak four languages and enjoy the benefits of an excellent education. “We are passionate about education, and our children have the benefit of a full program of standard studies, in addition to a rich Jewish education. This is not available to them in the city’s schools, where they would be at a real risk in an environment that is hostile to Jewish people, particularly those who are readily identifiable.”

The Namdars have lost their case in the lower and middle courts where they sought to have the hefty fine, the equivalent of a $84,000.00, rescinded. They are now awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court. What hangs in the balance, says Leah, is “whether Sweden will allow religious freedom and ensure the protection of its citizens.”

At Chabad-Lubavitch International Headquarters in New York, Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky said, “We take this matter very seriously. We are reviewing our options.”

Hillary Clinton Gives up Security Clearance After Private Server Scandal

Hillary Clinton Gives up Security Clearance After Private Server Scandal

By: Joshua Caplan          October 12, 2018

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has relinquished her security clearance over her handling of sensitive information stored on a private email server, according to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Cheryl Mills, a former top Clinton aide, along with four additional individuals, no longer have clearance, committee chairman Chuck Grassley said Friday afternoon. The Washington Times reports Clinton’s access to secret information “expired at the end of August,” while the four other “research assistants,” the names of which were redacted in a letter from the State Department, had their clearances terminated September 20.

The FBI began investigating the handling of classified material on Clinton’s private email server shortly after she announced her bid in April 2015. The issue had dogged Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, greatly contributing to the questions a majority of Americans have about her honesty and trustworthiness.

Still, Clinton had appeared to be heading for a sweeping victory over rival Donald Trump before Comey’s first letter to lawmakers, in which he stressed the FBI could not yet assess “whether or not this material may be significant,” or how long it might take to run down the new investigative leads.

The review involved material found on a computer belonging to Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former Democrat congressman and estranged husband of Clinton aide Huma Abedin. While Comey was vague in his initial description of the inquiry, he said Sunday that the FBI reviewed communications “to or from Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of state.”

Based on such review, Comey told lawmakers the FBI was not changing the conclusion it reached this summer. Then, Comey said, “no reasonable prosecutor” would recommend Clinton face criminal charges for using a private email system while at the State Department.

In June of this year, Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz issued a stinging rebuke to the FBI for its handling of the Clinton email investigation. The watchdog official’s report labeled Comey “insubordinate” and said his actions during the probe were “extraordinary.” However, the report did not find evidence that Comey was motivated by political bias or preference in his decisions to absolve Clinton.

Further, the report criticized Comey for publicly announcing his recommendation against criminal charges for Clinton. It also faults him for alerting Congress days before the 2016 election that the investigation was being reopened because of newly discovered emails.

Representatives for Clinton did not immediately respond to request for comment.

United Nations – Israel, Syria To Reopen Golan Crossing On Monday: U.S. Envoy To U.N.

United Nations – Israel, Syria To Reopen Golan Crossing On Monday: U.S. Envoy To U.N.

United Nations – Israel, Syria and the United Nations have agreed to open the Quneitra crossing in the Golan Heights on Monday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Friday.

Haley said in a statement that the opening “will allow U.N. peacekeepers to step up their efforts to prevent hostilities in the Golan Heights region.”

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has been monitoring operations in a demilitarized zone established in 1974 between the Israeli-occupied Golan and the Syrian sector, but the peacekeeping mission was disrupted by Syria’s civil war.

Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Middle East war and fought Syria again on the strategic plateau in a 1973 conflict.

“We look to both Israel and Syria to provide U.N. peacekeepers the access they need as well as assurances of their safety. We also call on Syria to take the necessary steps so UNDOF can safely and effectively deploy and patrol without interference,” Haley said.

Military police from Russia, a major ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, have been patrolling on the Syrian side of Quneitra.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman visited the Israeli side of the crossing on Sept. 27. He said then that in the past, traffic through Quneitra mainly comprised shipments into Syria of apples grown by Druze farmers on the Israeli-controlled Golan – and the entry of brides for partners on both sides of the armistice line.

Trump Thanks Turkey for Brunson’s Release, Denies Cutting Deal

Trump Thanks Turkey for Brunson’s Release, Denies Cutting Deal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) –  President Donald Trump said on Saturday the release of U.S. pastor Andrew Brunson after two years in Turkey’s custody was a “tremendous step” toward improved relations with Turkey, but he denied cutting a deal with Ankara.

“The only deal, if you could call it a deal, is a psychological one. We feel much differently about Turkey today than we did yesterday, and I think we have a chance of really becoming much closer to Turkey,” Trump told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with Brunson.

A Turkish court on Friday sentenced Brunson, who had been charged with links to Kurdish militants and supporters of a U.S.-based Muslim cleric, to more than three years in prison but said he would not serve any further time because he had already been detained since October 2016.

The pastor’s release could signal a thaw in relations between the two NATO allies, which worsened in August after a deal to free Brunson fell apart and Trump authorized a doubling of duties on aluminum and steel imported from Turkey, helping drive the lira currency down against the dollar.

Trump, who met with Brunson at the White House on Saturday, did not pledge to lift the sanctions but said he welcomed an end to the “harsh relationship” the countries had over the past two months.

Trump also thanked President Tayyip Erdogan at Saturday’s meeting for helping secure Brunson’s release, despite a curt Twitter post from the Turkish leader earlier on Saturday repeating that Brunson’s release was a court’s decision to make, not his.

“Dear Mr. President, as I always pointed out, the Turkish judiciary reached its decision independently,” Erdogan wrote on his Twitter account. “I hope that the United States and Turkey will continue their cooperation as the allies that they are, and fight together against terrorist groups.”

Following Infiltration, Lieberman Cuts Fuel Supplies to Gaza ‘as Long as the Violence Does Not Stop’

Following Infiltration, Lieberman Cuts Fuel Supplies to Gaza ‘as Long as the Violence Does Not Stop’

by Benjamin Kerstein

Following an infiltration attempt in which 20 Palestinians succeeded in breaching the border fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced that all fuel supplies Israel provides the coastal enclave will cease immediately.

“As long as the violence in the Gaza Strip does not stop completely, including the sending of incendiary balloons and burning tires toward the Israeli towns, the fuel and gas supplies to the Gaza Strip will not be replenished,” Liberman wrote on Twitter Saturday evening, Israel’s Channel Two reported.

The infiltration occurred on Friday as 14,000 Palestinians rioted in several places along the border fence as part of the ongoing “march of return.” Terrorists succeeded in placing an explosive device that blew a hole in the fence, allowing around 20 Palestinians to reach Israeli territory.

The IDF opened fire and most of the infiltrators fled back to Gaza. However, four of them headed for an IDF sniper position. Three were killed by IDF fire and the last succeeded in crossing back over the border.

Several other infiltration attempts was apparently foiled on Saturday, with the IDF Spokesperson’s Office saying that a number of suspects were tracked and arrested trying to cross the fence at several points along the border.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh pledged that the border violence would continue, saying, “Woe to you if you stop the march of return before the siege is lifted. Our march is not for diesel and dollars, but it is our people’s natural right.”

Yahya Sinwar, Haniyeh’s superior in the organization, explicitly stated several months ago that the goal of the march was to murder Israelis and conquer the entirety of the Jewish state, saying that rioters “will uproot the borders, we will pluck out their hearts, and we will pray in Jerusalem.”

Gazan explodes bomb at Israeli border, killed in effort to attack IDF soldiers

During the incident, some 20 Arabs rushed through the border and ran towards an Israeli sniper’s nest.

As part of the ongoing weekly border protests prompted by Hamas, a Gazan exploded a bomb along the security fence with Israel on Friday and infiltrated past it. He shot at point-blank range while trying to kill an Israel Defense Forces soldier with a knife.

During the incident, some 20 Arabs rushed through the border and ran towards an Israeli sniper’s nest. Forces fired in the air, and some of the Arabs ran back through to Gaza. When some continued on towards the army position, soldiers fired, killing at least one man.

“Most of them doubled back, but I noticed that one remained in the area and we lost sight of him,” she said. “We did a reconstruction … in real time, and I told the forces that there was another terrorist [in the field]. One of the fighters spotted him and neutralized him.”

According to the commander of the Paratroopers Brigade who was operational on the scene, the terrorist who was killed was armed with a knife and repeatedly warned to stop before he was shot.

“This is a blatant terror attempt that was thwarted by IDF troops quickly and professionally which prevented a possible terror attack against civilians and IDF troops,” the IDF said Friday, adding that the knife was recovered at the scene.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman responded to the violence by ordering a halt to the transfer of fuel into Gaza.

Community in Trikala condemns ‘inexcusable and direct attack’; only 10 of its members survived Holocaust, some after British Princess Alice hid them in her home

Unidentified individuals smashed eight tombstones at a Jewish cemetery in Greece, including that of the former local community leader.

The incident happened last week at Trikala, a city in central Greece located about 240 kilometers (150 miles) northwest of Athens, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece wrote in a statement Friday.

Of those, several were rescued thanks to Princess Alice, the great-grandmother of Britain’s Prince William, who was living in the Athens region at the time.

In September of 1943, members of the Cohen family from Trikala appealed to her for help. She hid several relatives until the Nazis withdrew in October 1944.

The Jewish community of Trikala complained to police about the cemetery desecration and urged authorities to bring the culprits to justice.

Robert Singer, the CEO and executive vice president of the World Jewish Congress, said in a statement that the deed “is an inexcusable and direct attack against the Jewish community, which must be condemned at the highest levels.” In Greece today, he added, “such vile demonstrations of hatred and opposition have sadly become commonplace, against both Jews and other minorities. We cannot and must not tolerate such injustice.”

A Jewish cemetery in Nikaia near Athens was desecrated with neo-Nazi symbols in May, two years after unknown individuals smashed several marble headstones there.

The Jewish cemetery in Trikala was also desecrated once before, the local community wrote.

The city has some of Greece’s oldest tombstones, some erected more than 450 years ago.

Before the war, the community maintained three synagogues. The largest was used as a stable by the Germans. It was the only one which was still standing at the end of the war and functions to this day, according to the Jewish Museum of Greece.

Today, the community has about 40 members.
