Air India To Fly Direct to Tel Aviv As Saudi Arabia Allows Flights Over Airspace

Written by TPS on February 07, 2018

Air India announced that it will begin non-stop service from Tel Aviv to New Delhi on March 18. The flight time is expected to be five hours and will fly over Saudi Arabia. The route will be the first time that a flight path to or from Israel will pass over an Arab country. Saudi officials have confirmed they would permit the flights to cross their airspace.

The new route, which is set to begin service in the coming months, will offer three flights a week and break El Al’s current monopoly on service between Israel and India. It will also take substantially less than El Al, which currently lists flight time for its Tel Aviv-Mumbai route at eight hours due to a large detour the national carries has to take in order to avoid Arab air space.

The Saudi move has been presented as a gesture to the Indian government, not to Israel, since Jerusalem has no formal diplomatic ties with Riyadh. But the new route emerged as part of understandings reached by Prime Minister Netanyahu and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi during meetings last summer in Israel and last month in India. The two prime ministers signed an aviation agreement that will facilitate changes in airfares and security arrangements and further coordination between Israel and India.

Nevertheless, the change symbolizes an important step in the direction of normalization between Israel and the Sunni kingdom, supporting  already reported increasingly warm and cooperative relations. Last November, a Saudi newspaper ran a feature interview with IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, and top-level Saudi officials are rumored to have visited Israel in recent months.

In addition, Netanyahu has said he hopes for an end to Israeli planes skirting the Saudi peninsula to reach the subcontinent. Speaking at an economic forum in Mumbai he said his goal would be for an “efficient and direct route” to be established between the countries.

Netanyahu On Golan Heights: No One Should Test Israel’s Resolve

Written by TPS on February 06, 2018

Israel wants peace, but no one should test its resolve, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday during a tour of the Golan Heights.

Netanyahu and members of the Security Cabinet were briefed by IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot and GOC Northern Command Maj.-Gen. Yoel Strick.

“I am now concluding the tour of IDF Northern Command that we held this morning with the members of the Security Cabinet. I am impressed by the major work the IDF is doing to defend our borders and our state. We want peace but we are prepared for any scenario and I suggest that no one test us,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu’s statement comes against a backdrop of repeated comments by Israeli officials that it would not tolerate an Iranian military buildup in Syria and accusations that Tehran is trying to turn Lebanon into a huge munitions factory for its proxy Hezbollah.

Commenting on the overnight operation in which Ahmad Nasser Jarar, the Palestinian terrorist who led the cell that murdered Rabbi Raziel Shevach, was shot dead by security forces last night after a month-long manhunt, Netanyahu said:  I promised the widow of Rabbi Raziel Shevach that we would settle accounts with his murderer. I want to praise the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), Israel Police and the IDF for doing exactly this.”

Netanyahu added that Israeli security forces would also catch up with Abed Alkarim Adel Assi, the terrorist who stabbed Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal to death at a hitchhiking station outside Ariel on Monday.

“So it will be with the abhorrent murderer of Rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal. We are all with his family and his widow,” Netanyahu said.

PM: Poland Must Defend Truth About Holocaust

PM: Poland Must Defend Truth About Holocaust

Written by TPS on February 05, 2018

Israel expects every country in the world to defend the truth about the Holocaust, including Poland, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Monday as tensions between Jerusalem and Warsaw over Polish legislation that would criminalize accusations of Polish complicity in the Holocaust continued to simmer.

Speaking at a ceremony at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem honoring diplomats who saved Jews during the Holocaust, Netanyahu said: The truth about the Holocaust must always be studied. It must always be remembered. Israel works closely with our partners around the world to defend and reveal the truth about the Holocaust. We expect to do that with every country, including Poland. Above all, future generations must internalize the lessons of the Holocaust. I think the most important lesson for all humanity is that hatred, extreme ideologies, these must always be confronted early when there is time to nip them at the bud.”

Poland’s ambassador to Israel Jacek Chodorowicz  was a notable absentee from the event, which was attended by dozens of ambassadors and diplomats.

The ceremony marked the unveiling of a plaque honoring the work of 36 diplomats, from 21 countries, recognized by Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center as Righteous Among the Nations.

“This plaque that we dedicate today recognizes these brave diplomats, who acted by the dictates of their conscience without regard for personal and professional consequence,” Netanyahu said.

“When Esther Ofiri’s mother took her from an attic in Hungary to the Swedish delegation, a young diplomat listened to her mother’s pleas and immediately responded, don’t worry, soon we’ll give you protective passes. And that man was Raoul Wallenberg, a hero among heroes. On July 9th, 1944, Wallenberg arrived in Budapest to serve at the Swedish embassy, and when he realized how many Jews needed his help, he threw diplomatic caution to the wind, he worked tirelessly to save Jews, he issued thousands of protective letters and placed the Swedish flag, he placed the Swedish flag over buildings housing Jews.

“There are lesser known heroes. They are all on this wall and they should be known. We should teach our people, I think all of humanity, their courage and example, diplomats like Captain Francis Foley of the United Kingdom and Ho Feng-Shan of China and the others. They deserve to be household names. It’s a matter of justice, but it’s also a matter of educating future generations. So we chose to place this plaque with these brave diplomats’ names here in a prominent place of our Foreign Ministry, because these are the kind of people we ask our young diplomats to emulate. Men and women of boundless courage, men and women of the deepest moral character. By the way, many of them were castigated by their foreign ministries and for many of them their career came to a swift end. But they risked everything for the truth and the first thing is establishing the truth. It wasn’t easy to do that because the truth was hidden by iron curtains of lies and deception. The truth is not always easy to establish today either by different means, but the first thing they wanted to establish was the truth. Once they learned the truth, they risked everything for our common humanity, and for that, we and history will justly remember them as heroes.

“We Jews have learned to believe our enemies when they call for our annihilation. We’ve learned that we must be able to defend ourselves by ourselves against any potential threat. The State of Israel not only has internalized these lessons, it practices it. We hold our hand out to peace for any of our neighbors who wish peace with us, and there are quite a few, and their number is growing, I’m happy to say, and I hope it will extend to all. But we are forever conscious of the danger to us and to the rest of mankind of those who want to exterminate us, ultimately they exterminate the world we all want to keep and cherish.”

Cabinet Approves Legalization of Havat Gilad

Cabinet Approves Legalization of Havat Gilad

Written by TPS on February 04, 2018

The Cabinet voted unanimously Sunday to approve Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman’s motion to legalize the Havat Gilad outpost near Nablus in the wake of the murder of Rabbi Raziel Shevach, a resident of the community, by Palestinian terrorists on January 9.

The Cabinet decision stated that the new settlement would be built on private and or state lands and would have independent municipal status under the umbrella of the Samaria Regional Council.

Prior to the meeting, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said he had spoken with Shevach’s widow Yael and told her that the government would legalize the outpost.

“The government will provide for the status of Havat Gilad in order to facilitate orderly life there,” Netanyahu said. “For the murderers – exacting justice. To those who sanctify death, we will sanctify life. This is the essence of the government’s policy.

“I told her that our policy is being carried out in two spheres. First, exacting justice. Yesterday our forces were again in action in an effort to apprehend the last of the assassins and their accomplices in the murder of Rabbi Shevach. We will not rest until we bring them to justice. And we will bring them all to justice,” Netanyahu said.

“Our second policy guideline is to strengthen settlement,” he continued. “Whoever thinks that through the reprehensible murder of a resident of Havat Gilad, a father of six, that he can break our spirit and weaken us, is making a bitter mistake.”

Havat Gilad was built on land purchased by Moshe Zar after the murder of his son Gilad, the security coordinator of the Samaria Regional Council, who was shot and killed by Palestinian terrorists in 2001.  Some 42 families currently live in the outpost.

However some of the community is built on land whose status is unclear. In order to accomodate parts of the outpost that may not meet the requirement of being on private or state land, the Cabinet statement said the new settlement would “absorb residents from the area.”

Itai Zar, Gilad’s brother, told Tazpit Press Service that the family was “very excited about the decision to recognize Havat Gilad.”

“A month ago our dear friend Raziel [Sehvach] was murdered and instead of sitting her and mourning we decided that we would not give in and we fought together with his widow Yael to have a cemetery built here, to have him buried here and to have Havat Gilad recognized. This is our response; they murder and we build,” Zar said.

Samaria Settlers’ Committee Chairman Tzachi Dickstein said that while he welcomed the decision, “the recognition of Havat Gilad came as the result of an abominable murder, and not as part of a policy to build settlements.”

“This morning’s decision is a right one but it isn’t enough,” he added. “We call upon the government to strengthen our hold and sovereignty in Judea and Samaria. Widespread settlement is the only way to prevent terror and to ensure sovereignty”

A spokesman for Peace Now said the legalization of Havat Gilad was “a new low in the government’s caving in to the settlers. The government caved to the cynical exploitation of a foul murder and is turning an illegal outpost built on private lands into a new settlement. The legalization of Havat Gilad, an isolated outpost, deep in the West Bank harms the chances of reaching a two-state solution and awards a prize to land grabbers.”

Palestinians Carrying Knives, Grenade Arrested After Crossing Gaza Border

Written by TPS on February 01, 2018

Four Palestinians were apprehended early Thursday evening as they attempted to cross the border from the Gaza Strip into Israel. An IDF spokesperson said one one of the infiltrators was carrying two knives and a hand grenade.

According to reports the suspects were observed by IDF spotters as they approached the border fence and were apprehended immediately after crossing over into Israel.  The suspects were taken for questioning and the IDF is looking into whether they planned to carry out a terrorist attack.

Israel-Poland Diplomatic Row Continues

Israel and Poland continued a diplomatic skirmish Thursday following Senate ratification in Warsaw of a bill that would outlaw assigning blame to Poland for Holocaust crimes committed in Poland.

A day after a bipartisan move in the Knesset to criminalize Holocaust denial or diminishing of the role of collaborators with the Nazis in perpetrating the Holocaust and after Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki agreed to address Israeli concerns before finalizing the language of the bill, some senior Israeli diplomats asked Netanyahu, who is also Israel’s foreign minister, to recall Ambassador Anna Azari from Warsaw in protest.

“The law passed in Poland is severe and embodies a removal of Polish responsibility for their part in the Jewish Holocaust,” said Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz Thursday, calling for Netanyahu to pull the ambassador. “In the balance between diplomatic considerations and moral considerations, there must be a clear preference to honor the memory of the Holocaust victims above all other considerations,” he added.

Opposition MK and head of the Yesh Atid Party Yair Lapid also continued campaigning against the Polish law, Tweeting on Thursday that “no Polish law can change history. We will never forget.”

Labor Party MK Itzik Shmuli added that “History will judge Poland twice – once for their part in the vile crime, and once again for the despicable attempt to deny it.”

Emmanuel Nahshon, The spokesman for the Israeli Ministry for Foreign Affairs conveyed a similar message via Twitter, writing that “The State of Israels strongly objects to the Polish senate’s decision. Israel views any attempt to undermine the historical truths very seriously. No law will change the facts.”

Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust memorial, emphasized the fact that the phrase “Polish death camps” is erroneous because the concentration and extermination camps in Poland. But they added that censorship is not the way a democracy combats historical revisionism.

“The correct way to combat these historical misrepresentations is not by criminalizing these statements but by reinforcing educational activities,” Yad Vashem said in a statement. “(Extermination camps) were built and operated by the Germans in Nazi-occupied Poland with the express purpose of murdering and annihilating the Jews of Europe within the framework of the ‘Final Solution.”

The law passed last night is “liable to blur historical truths due to limitations it places on expressions regarding the complicity of segments of the Polish population in crimes against Jews committed by its own people, either directly or indirectly, on Polish soil during the Holocaust,” the group said.

On Israel’s Southern Coast, Endangered Dolphins Flourish

On Israel’s Southern Coast, Endangered Dolphins Flourish

Written by Avinadav Vitkon/TPS on January 31, 2018

“Every encounter with a dolphin gives me a thrill” says Dr. Ruth Yahel, a marine ecologist at the Israel Nature and Parks Authority. “The sight of a dolphin darting out of the water and riding the bow wave, being joined by other dolphins and engaging in play together, is a spectacular scene which never gets boring. It epitomizes the wonder of creation before our very eyes.”

It is a sight that is not just wonderous and rare, it is also a sight that is considered somewhat of a surprise given the state of the dolphin population around the Mediterranean basin.

Two types of dolphins live along the Israeli shore, the common bottlenose dolphin and the common dolphin. Research on these species is relatively undeveloped, but evidence has emerged that a healthy colony of common dolphins is thriving near the Israeli shore, while in other parts of the Mediterranean Sea, they are gradually deteriorating and disappearing and are in fact in danger of extinction.

While bottlenose dolphins, which are considered a ‘vulnerable species’ in the Mediterranean, have been known to live along Israel’s coastline, the endangered common dolphins began to be sighted in 2005 on a strip some 70 kilometers long between Herzliya in the center of the country and Ashkelon in the south.

Despite the relatively limited space in which they have chosen to live, the colony seems to be thriving. Where did the colony originate, and why did they choose to live in this area?

“We don’t have a definitive answer” says Dr. Aviad Sheinin, director of the Israel Marine Mammal Research & Assistance Center (IMMRAC), an organization established by researchers from Haifa University, which has been researching dolphins in Israel since 1998. “The fact is, we began seeing the dolphins in the area right after IDF soldier Gilad Shalit was abducted and the Israeli authorities retaliated by restricting the Gaza fishing area. Our hunch”, he adds, “is that fishing kept the dolphins away from the Israeli coastline. In 2005, following restrictions placed on fishing on the Gaza coast, a marine corridor was exposed and the dolphins took their opportunity. Since then, it looks as though they are here to stay. Apparently they have enough sustenance here, since they are a strong colony, unlike others in different parts of the Mediterranean Sea.”

Over the years, IMMRAC researchers have published a series of studies about Israel’s dolphins, which eventually led the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2017 to declare Israel’s seashores as important for both dolphin species.  “IUCN is one of the leading international organizations for wildlife conservation, and this declaration is very significant”‘ says Sheinin, who has researched the dolphins in the area for so long that he can actually identify several of them individually. “It means that Israeli government must take the necessary measures in order to protect these rare mammals that have found refuge in our waters. “

The obvious step, Sheinin says, would be to create an ocean nature reserve in order to ensure the dolphins  future. He added  that Israel must also advance marine research along its coastline. “We have little knowledge of what’s going on in deeper waters surrounding our shores. We have yet to discover the implications of the gas drilling rigs, and there is still a lot to learn about the general situation of marine mammals living in Israeli economic waters. This research requires funding and extensive development,” notes Sheinin.

Much of Israel’s 196-kilometer-long Mediterranean coastline is taken up by port facilities, water desalination factories, military installations and more. Oil and gas rigs  are the latest addition to waters already bustling with busy shipping lanes and fishing routes.  “The very existence of dolphins in such crowded conditions is surprising”, says INPA marine ecologist Yahel. “For this reason we have, together with IMMRAC, formulated a proposal for a sizeable sea reserve along the southern coast – an area of approximately 75 square kilometers. It’s not a big reserve compared to land reserves in Israel, but we hope it will be enough to ensure the health and protection of the dolphin colony.”

The site of the proposed reserve is also one of the busiest fishing sites in Israel,  attracting large numbers of trawlers and other fishing boats on a daily basis. “The dolphins have developed a tendency to hug the sides of the boats and grab fish from the nets, but by doing so they risk their lives” says Yahel. “Our goal is to facilitate safe and natural feeding which does not rely on human support, and the only way to do so is to stave off fishing activity”.

The ground-breaking marine reserve plan has been officially submitted, but there is still a long way to go before it gains the approval of Israel’s authorities. One of the main obstacles is the objections of the fishing industry, which says the project would harm its interests. But Yahel says that experience elsewhere in the world shows that “far from harming fishermen’s livelihood, marine reserves actually contribute to it by increasing the amount of fish in the sea.”

She says that “reserves enable colonies to build up in size and strength, as well as allowing rare species to recuperate and increase their numbers after having been nearly destroyed by intensive fishing. “

In fact, she continues, “in many cases, marine reserves were initiated in the interest of the fishing industry, rather than for the protection of wildlife. This is applicable to our case as well. The Israeli fishing industry will ultimately profit from the project, but the state needs the foresight to stand the first difficult years in order to harvest the gains later on.”

Ocean reserves can not only increase marine life and yield greater diversity, concludes Yahel,  but can also lead to completely new phenomena. “Look what happened when the marine corridor opened around the Gaza Strip,” she says. “We can only try to imagine what other surprises nature has in store for us, if we only give it the opportunity to do so.”
