Police to Question Netanyahu on Submarine Affair

Written by Andrew Friedman/TPS on January 30, 2018

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit will instruct police to summon Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to testify in the Case 3,000 corruption affair, the Israel Broadcasting Corporation (Kan) reported Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, the justice ministry denied reports that the police had asked Mandelblit to summon the prime minister, a long-time advisor and confident, but that the latter refused to comply.

“No such request was presented to the attorney general’s office, to state prosecutors or to prosecuting attorneys focusing on the case. In this context, the reports are completely wrong.

“Regarding other details that have been published – we suggest caution when listening to reports like these during an investigation, which by their very nature are partial, often slanted and do not reflect reality,” the Broadcast Corporation said.

Netanyahu, Putin Hold Talks On Syria, Iran

Written by TPS on January 29, 2018

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Moscow Monday for talks on regional security issues, foremost among them Israel’s concerns over the growing Iranian presence in Syria and Lebanon.

While the two leaders made no mention of Iranian involvement in Syria in their public statements, Netanyahu said prior to leaving for Moscow that Iran was engaged in “relentless efforts” to establish a military presence in Syria and was attempting to turn Lebanon into “one giant missile site” aimed at Israel.

Netanyahu alluded to Iran when attending a ceremony at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center in Moscow where he and Putin visited an exhibition marking the 1943 uprising at the Sobibor death camp. “I think that the main lesson of the rise of the Nazis and, afterwards, their defeat, is that one needs to take a strong and timely stand against murderous ideologies,” Netanyahu told Putin after viewing the exhibit.

“This is also our mission today,” Netanyahu continued, “and it is to this end that I want to speak with you, about our common efforts to promote security and stability in our region, and – of course – the cooperation between us, between Russia and Israel. Our talks, which we hold periodically, in my view, greatly contribute to achieving these goals and I am certain that they will do so now as well.”

Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed to reporters that Netanyahu and Putin had discussed the situation in Syria, including the ongoing Russian-sponsored Syrian National Dialogue, however he declined to provide further details.

Israel’s ambassador to Moscow, Gary Koren, expanded on security ties between the two countries in an interview published Monday by the Russian state news agency TASS.

Koren told TASS that Tel Aviv and Moscow have been holding regular consultations on the situation in Syria and that cooperation between the sides was  “sufficient and positive.”

“The main achievement is that we have been holding consultations and exchanging views, and we also exchange information occasionally,” Koren said. “Even though there are some differences between us, I believe that both we and Russia are generally content,” he added.

Foreign Ministry Demands ‘Clarification’ From Polish Embassy Over Holocaust Law

Written by Andrew Friedman/TPS on January 28, 2018

Foreign Ministry officials met with Pyotr Kozlowski, the deputy head of mission at the Polish embassy in Israel, Sunday to register the government’s anger at Poland’s new law criminalising anyone who “accuses, publicly and against the facts, the Polish nation, or the Polish state, of being responsible or complicit in the Nazi crimes committed by the Third German Reich.”

The law, signed into law by the Polish parliament last week, calls for fines and/or prison time for people accusing Poland of “crimes against peace and humanity, or war crimes, or otherwise grossly diminish(ing) the responsibility of the actual perpetrators thereof.”

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon added that the meeting with Kozlowski had two goals: To clarify the extent that the law’s effect would have on public discussion of the Holocaust in Poland, and to express the Israeli government’s “strong rejection of any attempt to rewrite history and to prevent honest, open debate about Poles’ participation in the murder of Jews during the Holocaust.”

Following the meeting Kozlowski said he had listened to the Ministry’s concerns about the law and stressed that the point of the proposal was not to whitewash history, but rather to “safeguard the truth.”

But Dr. Efraim Zuroff, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center Israel Office, rejected Kozlowski’s explanation, but acknowledged that the issue is complicated because the text of the Polish law is technically correct.

“There were no Polish death camps. Poles didn’t build them, Poles didn’t run them, there were no Poles as guards in these camps,” Zuroff told Tazpit Press Service (TPS). “There was no Polish state at the time. It’s not that the Poles were integrated into the mass murder mechanism like the Lithuanians, the Latvians, the Estonians, the Croatians, the Ukrainians, the Belorussians. That didn’t happen in Poland. The Nazis murdered 3 million non-Jewish Poles! The Nazis considered them untnrmenchen!

When asked to compare the law to other attempts in eastern Europe to rewrite Holocaust history, Zuroff agreed that the measure is part of a “endemic” trend in former Communist countries to distort their roles in the murder of Jews during World War II.

“You’ve got to Understand: There is a big difference in Poland. This is not Lithuania, where (the local population were) part and parcel of the mass murder. The Germans devastated Poland. But Poland was a very anti-Semitism country before the Shoah… Many thousands of Poles played a role either in killing Jews or in turning Jews over to the Nazis. This is very well-documented, on a very large scale.

“This is a total whitewash of Polish complicity, Zuroff said.

Terror Victim Raziel Shevach Laid to Rest in Havat Gilad

Written by TPS on January 10, 2018

Hundreds of people, including Education Minister Naftali Bennett and and Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel, gathered at the Havat Gilad outpost Wednesday to accompany Raziel Shevach on his final journey.  Mourners shouted down Bennett’s calls for mourners not to take the law into their own hands with shouts of “revenge!”, while local religious authorities praised Shevach as a dedicated husband and father and rabbi who was passionate about the Torah and settling the Land of Israel.

Former Sephardic Chief Rabbi (and current Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem) Shlomo Amar said that Shevach was “an angel of God who created beloved souls here on earth, both your children and your students.”

Rabbi Elyakim Levanon, chief rabbi of the Samaria District, added that he had meet with Shevach during a Torah lecture two months ago and came to admire his insights.

“Dear Raziel, you were nothing but praise for God – as your named indicated. We are at war and you are a victim of that war. A war between the children of light and the children of darkness,” Levanon said.

Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau criticised Palestinian leaders, asking why they failed to utter “one word of condemnation for the attack.

The funeral took place under a cloud of uncertainty: Earlier in the day, Civil Administration officials said they would prevent Shevach’s widow, Yael, from fulfilling her husband’s request to be buried inside the community because there was no functioning cemetery. Residents responded quickly by clearing a patch of land inside the outpost to serve as a regional cemetery – a move they said should serve as a first step towards the authorisation of the entire community.

Yossi Dagan, the head of the Samaria Regional Council, described Shevach as a “man of kindness and love” who had an “enormous soul.” Turning to Shevach’s killers, Dagan said warned that they would not break the Jewish People.

‘You sanctify death, but we sanctify life. You sanctify evil while we sanctify the Torah and the Land of Israel and the Jewish People. We will beat you, you bunch of wretched barbarians.”

Dagan also echoed calls by Agriculture Minister Ariel earlier Wednesday to “unleash” the army in order to more effectively prevent Palestinian terror attacks.

“We have the best army in the world,” he said. “We demand that the army bring these killers to justice. We want our national pride restored. Mr. Prime Minister we demand that you announce full recognition – today – for Havat Gilad as a legitimate part of the State of Israel. Mr. Defense Minister, we demand your approval of 1000 housing units here on the land that Moshe Zar has liberated here at Havat Gilad.

“This is what will stop the terrorists’ motivation. There is no price for six orphans,” Dagan said.

US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman placed the blame for Tuesday’s terror attack squarely on the shoulders of the Palestinian Authority, saying that one need look no further than PA salaries and pension payments to terrorists and their families to understand the lack of peace between Israel and the Palestinians

Responding to the murder of Rabbi Raziel Shevach near the Havat Gilad outpost on Tuesday Friedman wrote on Twitter that “Hamas praises the killers and PA laws provide them financial rewards. Look no further to why there is no peace.

“An Israeli father of six was killed last night in cold blood by Palestinian terrorists. Praying for the bereaved Shevach family,” Friedman added.

Israeli Diamond-Backed Digital Currency Coming This Year

Written by Yona Schnitzer/TPS on January 08, 2018

Israel’s Diamond Exchange is to issue a digital token backed by diamond reserves for trading the precious gems, Eli Avidar, the Managing Director of the Israel Diamond Institutesaid Monday during a debate on regulation of cryptocurrencies at the Knesset Finance Committee.

“There is massive potential in Israel in everything that has to do with the field of cryptocurrencies, but we’re losing that potential,” Avidar told the committee. The Israel Diamond Exchange will issue a digital currency for the diamond sector that will render the need for cash obsolete. It will be a digital currency in which every transaction will be recognized and backed by diamond purchases.”

MK Yitzhak Herzog, who initiated the debate said “Israel must address cryptographic, virtual and digital coins.”

“The Bank of Israel appointed a committee to address the issue in 2014, but it hasn’t amounted to anything,” Herzog added.

The current state of Bitcoin and other crypto-related assets in the eyes of Israeli regulators is that they are not considered currency, but rather as assets, and are taxed as such. A major portion of the discussion was dedicated to whether or not they should be considered currency as opposed to taxable securities.

Let it be clear, the Financial Committee began dealing with this issue and we’re demanding that the regulators speed up their efforts to formulate a position on the matter,’ said chairman of the committee MK Moshe Gafni, ‘There may be large scale economic potential here. In any case, the train already left the station and a fast position formulation process is needed.’

Israeli Man Murdered in Drive-By Shooting in Samaria

Written by Yona Schnitzer/TPS on January 09, 2018

Rabbi Raziel Shevach, a resident of the Havat Gilad outpost in northern Samaria, was murdered in a drive-by shooting Tuesday. He was 35.

Shortly after 8pm, the Magen David Adom (MDA) radio received reports of a shooting attack, apparently from the victim, who had served as an MDA volunteer.

Paramedics from the town of Kedumim, a short drive from the scene of the attack, arrived on the scene and evacuated the victim to Meir Medical Centre in Kfar Saba, where his death was confirmed.

“I left Kedumim in an MDA ambulance, arriving quickly at the scene. I saw on the the side of the road, by the safety railing, a private vehicle with shooting markings on it,’ said MDA paramedic Elyashiv Reichenberg, the first to arrive on the scene. “There was a 35-year-old semi-conscious man in the driver seat with bullet wounds in his upper body.”

MK Bezalel Smotrich, a resident of Kedumim, was on Route 60 at the time of the shooting and stopped to administer first aid. He wrote on Twitter “Jewish Blood is not worthless!” and called on Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman to put an end to Palestinian terrorism. “Instruct our security forces to act with an iron fist! Make it clear to the Palestinians that they will pay a very heavy price for every attack like this.”

Opposition Leader Yitzhak Herzog (Zionist Camp) pledged to find and punish the killers and sent condolences to the family of the victim.

“To our great sorry, terrorism does not rest for even a minute. This time, the victim was a paramedic who mediated his life to helping others, no matter who they were. We will not rest from our fight; we will find and punish [the killers].

Shevach is survived by his wife and five children.

IAF Strikes ‘Significant Terror Infrastructure’ In Gaza

Written by Yona Schnitzer/TPS on January 04, 2018

IAF jets carried out multiple airstrikes in Gaza late Wednesday night. The strikes were in response to three rockets fired from Gaza into Israel on Wednesday.

An IDF spokesperson said the jets had targeted “significant terror infrastructure.” The IDF and other Israeli officials however declined to elaborate on the nature of the targets.  Palestinian sources said the attacks took place in the Rafah region in the southern Gaza Strip. No Palestinian injuries were reported.

In response to the 3 rockets fired at southern Israeli communities throughout yesterday from Gaza, IAF fighter jets targeted a significant terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip

On Wednesday, Israeli Police said that two shells fired from Gaza landed in open fields in the Eshkol Regional Council. A third rocket was reportedly fired, but where it landed is currently unknown. This is the fifth instance of rocket fire from Gaza into Israel in the last week.

“The IDF will continue to use all means to thwart attempts to attack the citizens of Israel. The IDF will not allow any breach of Israeli sovereignty or any hostile attempts by terror organizations such as Hamas and remains prepared for a wide variety of scenarios,”  the IDF said.

Iranian Terror Cell Busted In Hebron

Iranian Terror Cell Busted In Hebron

Written by TPS on January 03, 2018

An Iranian operated terror cell has been exposed in Judea and Samaria, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) revealed Wednesday. The Shin Bet said the cell was recruited and funded by an Iranian intelligence agent operating out of South Africa.

According to the Shin Bet Mahmoud Makharmeh, a 29-year-old computer engineering student from Hebron was recruited by a relative, Bakhar Makharmeh, also originally from the Hebron area, who has been living in South Africa for several years and worked for Iranian intelligence. Mahmoud Makharmeh was recruited during a trip to South Africa in 2015. The Shin Bet said he had met several times during the trip with Iranian intelligence officers who had come to the country to meet him.

Commented on the affair, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said this is not the first time that Israel had foiled Iranian attempts to execute terrorist attacks against Israel.

“They are trying various methods, and in various fields, to attack the State of Israel. I am pleased that the Israel Security Agency and our security services have succeeded in foiling it,” Netanyahu said.

“I would like to bring it to your attention that Iran is using terrorism against the State of Israel not only with the assistance of terrorist movements such as Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad but is also attempting to organize terrorist actions inside the State of Israel and against the citizens of Israel,” the prime minister added.

Mahmoud Makharmeh’s handlers told him to recruit a suicide bomber and a terrorist cell to carry out shooting attacks. Makharmeh carried out the orders, recruiting Dia Sarahne, 22, from Hebron, and Nur Makharmeh, 22, also from Hebron. The Shin Bet said the two had agreed to carry out terror attacks under Iranian orders and that Mahmoud Makharmeh had received  via Bakhar Makharmeh the sum of $8,000 for doing so.

Makharmeh’s handlers also suggested he training to handle weapons and explosives and that he set up a photography shop in Hebron that would act as a forward base to transfer intelligence on the area to Iran and that he obtain Israeli sim and credit cards to transfer to the Iranians.

They also asked him to recruit an Israeli Arab operative to photograph inside Israel and to make contact with Israeli Arab journalists with access to government offices.

An indictment against Mahmoud Makharmeh charges him with making contact with the enemy overseas, receiving funds from enemy agents and with joining an illegal organization. Nur Mahrame and Dia Sarahne are charged with joining an illegal organization.
