Israel Weekly Summary: Dozens Arrested, Weapons Confiscated

Written by Michael Bachner/TPS on September 22, 2016

Israeli forces responded this week to the ongoing increase in Palestinian terror attempts in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. As of this writing, security forces have arrested 66 people in Judea and Samaria, in addition to seizing weapons, ammunition, money and more related equipment.

In Jerusalem, Border Police forces conducted a series of mid-week operations in the Arab neighborhoods of Issawiya and Shuafat refugee camp, arresting 23 for a variety of charges including involvement in terrorism, rioting, illegal possession of weapons, drug abuse and property offenses. Police also discovered and seized illegal weapons including a Glock pistol, magazines, clubs and ammunition.

Thursday, Palestinians in Nablus attacked Israel Police and Border Police forces with rocks and firebombs as the latter secured a visit by some 700 Israeli worshippers to the Joseph’s Tomb compound. No injuries or property damage were reported.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit denied the arrests were a preventative measure to ramp down a wave of Palestinian attacks ahead of the Rosh Hashana holiday on October 3-4. “The  spike in arrest numbers does not represent an increase compared to the past and are not related to the upcoming holidays,” the army said.

Police spokespeople said that while there are ongoing operations to fight crime and terrorism, security officials are also preparing for the upcoming holiday period. They confirmed a TPS  report from last Sunday noting that each holiday period of September-October in recent years has seen an increase in violence, and added that “the number of arrests is determined according to evaluations of the situation, relevant intelligence and the amount of targets in the field.”

“We take it as a given now that we always experience a sharp rise in Palestinian violence when the Jewish High Holidays take place around September and October. It is not a new phenomenon, rather it has been the same for many years. As soon as Rosh Hashana [the Jewish New Year] looms, the levels of Palestinian violence against Jews begins to rise,” former Shin Bet Section Chief Menachem Landau told Tazpit Press Service (TPS) on Sunday.

Just Released: Benny Friedman’s New Single “B’sefer Chaim”

With the advent of the brand new year of 5777, Benny Friedman releases a melodious good year wish to the community, an upbeat song called “B’sefer Chaim.”
“Lchaim, Lchaim, Lchaim Tovim…” goes the refrain, and Benny hopes the gentle but cheerful notes will inspire people to prepare for the new year with a sense of optimism.
Just in this one short Tefilla, we make eight requests of Hashem for the upcoming year,” says Benny, “because this is our tradition: hold nothing back, Daven for everything, and start the year confidently with incredible faith and trust that when we ask for good things, our dear Father in Heaven will certainly provide it.
Referencing the Baal HaTanya’s famous parable of a king visiting the people in the field and greeting them all smilingly and lovingly, Benny says he hopes the song will remind Yidden that even more than we want to be blessed, Hashem wants to bless us. Who wouldn’t be ecstatic to hear that? So let’s greet the year joyfully.
The song is composed by Eli Klein, arranged by Eli Klein and Yitzy Berry and produced by Sruly Meyer.
May 5777 indeed bring about the greatest blessings to everyone who needs them. “Lchaim, Lchaim, Lchaim Tovim!”
Enjoy.

BREAKING: The Eruv will be Checked, and Hopefully be UP for Shabbos

The Eruv will be Checked, and Hopefully be UP for Shabbos; However, Substantial Additional Funding is Still Needed

Following a week long appeal for urgently needed funds Howard Witkin of the LA Eruv announces the Eruv will be checked this week and sufficient funds to cover the short term financial needs.

The following email was sent out to the LA Eruv subscribers:

“Prior to the appeal that started on September 1, the LA Eruv reserves had
dipped below $10,000, which is an insufficient amount to take care of many
emergency repairs.  We notified the community of the need to raise
operating capital, replenish the reserve accounts and need to plan for the
replacement of the 45 year-old lift truck.

We have had sufficient response from the community to cover the short term
financial crisis but not the long term financial issues.  Some of the
participating shuls and community members have also satisfied prior
commitments, and we have started on a process to establish a broad-based
finance committee that will strive to include all of the shuls covered by
the LA Eruv.  We intend to work out a short and long term finance strategy
so as to avoid future potential shutdowns of the LA Eruv.

Based on the input of the city rabbeim and the Eruv Vaad,  we will be
checking and hopefully repairing the ERUV in time to be up for this Shabbos.

However, even with the generous support of many, we are still $100,000
short of what we will need to operate the eruv.  To this end, we are
planning a community wide Shabbaton for the Eruv on Parshas Lech
Lecha. November 12-13, and would ask for your continued support and generous donations.”

The Eruv Is STILL DOWN-Status Update

The Eruv Is STILL DOWN-Status Update

We want to express our gratitude to those families that have made

contributions to the eruv this week. To those families,  we say Yasher
Koach.  We are also grateful to those rabbis that appealed to their members
on our behalf this past Shabbos.

Unfortunately the response has not been strong.  We have received almost
enough to repay the loan from our emergency fund but not enough to provide
operating funds for next year.

Of the thousand families on the eruv email list, and several thousand more
that received the appeal from the shuls,  only a couple hundred have made
contributions.

If you haven’t yet,  please make a contribution and commitment to support
the eruv monthly or annually.
If you have given, please reach out to your friends and encourage them to
take responsibility as well.

We are looking for additional contributions and annual commitments before
Shabbos.   Please ask your friends to participate.

*The LA ERUV needs your support.  We are looking for families willing to
take personal responsibility for supporting the LA ERUV on an ongoing
basis.  The time to offer your support for the LA ERUV is Now.  Please
consider one of the following methods:*

Netanyahu, Obama: US – Israel Ties ‘Unbreakable’

Netanyahu, Obama: US – Israel Ties ‘Unbreakable’

Written by Jonathan Benedek/TPS on September 21, 2016

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked outgoing US President Barack Obama for his friendship with Israel at the United Nations on Wednesday, during what may have been the last face-to-face encounter during Obama’s presidency.

“I want to thank you for the extensive security and intelligence cooperation between our two countries,” Netanyahu told Obama. “I don’t think people at large understand the breadth and depth of the cooperation, but I know and I want to thank you on behalf of all of the people of Israel.”

“Your voice will be heard even after your presidency is over,” Netanyahu added. “You will always be a welcome guest in Israel.”

President Obama acknowledged that his term in office is drawing to a close but still expressed a desire to achieve a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“Soon I will be finishing my term, but I want to ensure that Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace, and I will be discussing it with the prime minister,” said Obama.

Leading up to Obama’s final UN address as president, some pundits suggested that Obama could abandon long-standing US practice to veto one-sided UN Security Council resolutions against Israel. The threat is serious enough that 88 senators, including Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate Tim Kaine, asked the president on Tuesday not to change Washington’s UN policy vis-a-vis Israel.

“The only way to resolve the conflicts between the two is through direct negotiations that lead to a sustainable two-state solution with a future state of Palestine living in peace and security with Israel. This outcome would provide Israel with greater security and strengthen regional stability,” the senators wrote.

The White House’s Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes stressed that the President does not intend to take on another Mideast peace initiative before leaving office. Obama however, expressed concern about trends on the ground that should be addressed.

“Clearly there is great danger of not just terrorism but also flare-ups of violence,” Obama said. “We do have concerns around settlement activity as well, and our hope is that we can continue to be an effective partner with Israel in finding a path to peace.”

“Our hope is that in these conversations we get a sense of how Israel sees the next few years, what the opportunities are and what the challenges are, in order to assure that we keep alive the possibility of a stable, secure Israel, at peace with its neighbors and a Palestinian state that meets the aspirations of their people,” Obama added.

Both leaders also attested to the “unbreakable” bond between Israel and the United States.

“Our alliance has grown decade after decade, through successive presidents, bipartisan Congress and with the overwhelming support of the American people,” Netanyahu remarked. “It is an unbreakable bond.”
“As Prime Minister Netanyahu mentioned, the bond between the United States and Israel is unbreakable,” commented Obama.  “It is based on common values, family ties, a recognition that the Jewish state of Israel is one of our most important allies.”

Stabbing Attack Foiled in Hebron, Two Soldiers Wounded in Gush Etzion

Written by Michael Bachner/TPS on September 20, 2016

A Palestinian attempted to stab IDF soldiers shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday at a checkpoint near the village of Bani Na’im in the Mount Hebron region. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said troops shot and killed the assailant, and there were no Israeli casualties. Palestinian sources identified the terrorist as 16-year-old Issa Salim Mahmoud Tarayra, a resident of Bani Na’im.

The attack followed a busy night for Israeli security forces in Judea and Samaria, with multiple operations and raids during which two IDF soldiers were wounded, many weapons were discovered and seized, and 27 Palestinian terror suspects were arrested.

Near Bethlehem, two soldiers were injured during an operation to arrest suspects in the Dheisheh Refugee Camp. Residents attacked troops with firebombs and rocks, who responded with gunfire and riot control methods. One soldier sustained second degree burns after being hit with a firebomb, and a second was treated for smoke inhalation. Both were evacuated to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Both soldiers were listed in light-to-moderate condition, and the person suffering from smoke inhalation is expected to be released from the hospital during the day.

In Hebron, IDF searched the Abu Sneina neighborhood following a stabbing attack near the Cave of the Patriarchs on Monday night. Troops searched the neighborhood and discovered machinery for manufacturing weapons, commando knives, ammunition and more military equipment. Three Palestinian suspects were arrested.

North of Jerusalem, in the villages of Bani Zeid and Attil, IDF troops seized rifles and other weapons. In Qatanna, northwest of the capital, police raided a home and discovered a Glock pistol that had apparently been stolen from a home in the central Israeli town of Raanana. Eight attack dogs were also discovered in the house and were quarantined and two suspects were arrested.

In total, the IDF arrested 27 terror suspects. Two have been identified as members of Hamas, and the rest are suspected of attacking Israeli civilians and security forces during riots. All have been detained for questioning.

Mother of Terror Victim to Receive Jewish Feminism Award in US

Written by Ilana Messika/TPS on September 18, 2016

Rachelle Fraenkel, mother of Naftali Fraenkel, a 16-year-old boy who was murdered by Hamas-affiliated Palestinians, and best-selling author Lihi Lapid have been chosen to receive the Pamela Claman Award at the Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project (JWRP) in Maryland. The organization is dedicated to the empowerment of women to change the world through Jewish values.

“Getting an award from the JWRP  is a special honor,” Fraenkel told Tazpit Press Service (TPS). “I think the organization does unbelievable work in gathering together women from around the world and from all streams of Jewish streams to permit them to re-center themselves as Jewish women.

“To receive this award alongside Lihi Lapid, who is an acclaimed feminist author, embodies that objective to connect women from different branches of Jewish society,” she added.

Fraenkel a mother of seven from Nof Ayalon, is one of Israel’s most prominent teachers of Talmud and Rabbinic literature to women. She is dean of students at Nishmat, The Jeanie Schottenstein Center for Advanced Torah Study for Women, as well as the director of the advanced halacha (Jewish religious law) program at the Matan Women’s Institute for Torah Studies.

“Being orthodox, I am authentically and deeply committed to in the study of Talmud and Halakha, from general theology to the tiniest details of its application.” she told TPS.

When asked about the evolution of women’s representation within the Jewish public sphere, Fraenkel said the phenomenon is gradually developing.

“There is a growing number of women representing litigants in family courts;  religious law counsels in the realm of family purity laws; and there are also a few synagogues bringing women into leadership roles aside the community rabbi.

“The truth remains that under this evolution still lies a veritable revolution,” she added.

Fraenkel gained unwanted notoriety when her son, Naftali, was kidnapped with two other Israeli teenagers at the bus stop outside Alon Shvut, in Gush Etzion. The abduction sparked a massive manhunt known as Operation Brother’s Keeper, and was followed by Operation Protective Edge in the Gaza Strip.

During the crisis, Fraenkel spoke at the end of a United Nations Human Rights Council debate in Geneva calling on the international community to assist in the rescue of the missing teens, when the PLO and around 40 other states censured Israel for their actions against Palestinians in Judea and Samaria.

At her son’s funeral, Fraenkel became the first Orthodox woman to recite the Mourner’s Kaddish in front of cameras, in front of Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau.

A year after the crisis, she was a key voice in establishing the Jerusalem Unity Prize, together with the City of Jerusalem, the Gesher organization, and the families of Gilad Shaer and Eyal Ifrach.

“Ms. Fraenkel is an example of someone who, when faced with tragedy, managed to comfort a nation and symbolize dignity and faith in times of severe adversity. She was thrust into the public limelight, and she rose to the challenge with grace instead of running away,” stated Lori Palatnik, founding director of the JWRP, to TPS.

The Pamela Claman Leadership Award is given to international role models who have significantly shaped the Jewish world with exceptional and inspired leadership and will be presented during the JWRP Leadership Conference between September 18 to 20.

“I think we all deal with loss with our own toolbox. Personally, I try to make room for dealing with the void and grief without shoving it aside but also without allowing it to overwhelm the space dedicated to moments of happiness as they come,” concluded Fraenkel.
