Israeli Angered over Breaking the Silence

Israeli Ex-Soldiers Angered over Breaking the Silence Claims Against IDF
A group of former IDF soldiers, incensed over an Israeli NGO’s claims that they abused Palestinians during last summer’s fighting in Gaza, have taken to social media to fight the allegations.
Under the hashtag #my_truth in Hebrew, the soldiers, many of whom faced heavy fire from Hamas and other terrorist groups during the 50-day Operation Protective Edge, have begun posting stories of cases showing how they went to great lengths to avoid harming Palestinians. They also mentioned cases in which civilians took part in terrorist activity.
The goal of this initiative is to counter damning anonymous testimonies by other troops published by the NGO Breaking the Silence, which frequently publicizes claims that the IDF mistreats Palestinians.
Breaking the Silence touts itself as an organization of ex-soldiers who collect testimonies from troops who served in Palestinian areas since the start of the Second Intifada.
While claiming their goal is to “raise awareness over the everyday reality of serving in the occupied territories and to create a discussion about the cost of military control over a civilian population for so many years,” the NGO refuses to post the names of the soldiers who testify. They have also refused to pass along their accounts to the IDF’s Military Advocate General’s Corps for investigation, despite repeated requests by senior IDF officials.
As well, the latest report was itself published first in English and released to the foreign media. Breaking the Silence members routinely go abroad to share their testimonials on IDF activities, instead of taking their case directly to the IDF or civilian courts.
The latest counter-initiative to the NGO report began after Israeli left-wing Meretz MK Zehava Galon posted one such hostile testimony last Tuesday on her Facebook page.
In the allegation that she posted from Breaking the Silence, Galon quoted the following: “the unit identified two figures walking in an orchard around 900 meters from where we were posted. The figures were two girls. The observation post could not see them well, so the commander sent a UAV. The UAV marked them as dangerous. The unit directed an aircraft who fired on the girls, killing them. When the bodies were checked they had no weapons on them,” the allegation said.
Such accounts, which purport to show the IDF in a bad light, have prompted numerous counter claims from other IDF soldiers, who have attempted to portray a more positive view of IDF activities during the foray.
After reading the Breaking the Silence pamphlet, former IDF soldier Matan Katzman wrote on his Facebook page last Thursday that “during Operation Summer Rains in Beit Hanoun [in the northern Gaze Strip in 2006], we entered a house with a couple living in it. We asked them if they’re involved with Hamas, they said “no, not at all.” We asked them if they have weapons in the house, they said “no, not at all”. We stayed in the house for a couple of hours. When we left, we moved the couch and discovered an IED.”
The informal pro-IDF campaign by former Israeli soldiers also cited examples of humane and respectful behavior towards non-combatants during operations in the Judea and Samaria.
Avishai Shorsham recalled in a testimony that he wrote of his service on his Facebook page on Wednesday, that “During an operation in the Nablus Kasbah, while we are in the middle of a stakeout, an old man who lived in the house felt sharp pain in his chest. Without accordance with our orders, we evacuated him in the middle of the night while endangering ourselves.”
According to the organization’s website, the recent Breaking the Silencepamphlet was produced with the “generous support” of such foreign organizations as Christian Aid, Dan Church Aid, Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, Secretariat and Open Society Foundations founded by George Soros.

Israeli film legend Aryeh Elias Passes Away

From Baghdad to Israel: Actor Aryeh Elias, Passes Away at Age 94

Israeli film legend, Aryeh Elias passed away at age 94  on Thursday, May 7. The veteran stage, television and movie actor, who was born in Kurdistan in 1921, was the first Jew to be accepted to the drama faculty in Baghdad’s Academy of Fine Arts in Iraq in 1941.  He started his long acting career around age 10 thanks to his uncle’s theater house in Kurdistan.

In an interview with Israel’s Hinuchit 23 TV three years ago, Elias said that there was a huge uproar in the northern Iraqi Jewish community when he was accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad.  “No one understood how I was accepted because the academy examiners were Israel haters. But my name being Albert Elias, no one could tell by my name that I was Jewish.”

Elias’s delivery of the famous monologue by Shylock from Shakepeare’s The Merchant of Venice in Arabic won the judges over at the academy and he recalled that his acting skills stood out among the other actors.

Following the bloody Nazi-inspired pogrom, known as the Farhud against the Jewish population of Baghdad in 1941 after the British victory in the Anglo-Iraqi war, which left nearly 180 Jews dead, thousands injured and hundreds of Jewish business looted, and hostilities thereafter, Elias made aliyah to Israel in 1947.

“I had just got the role of my life, Shylock,” recalled Elias. “But following all the hostilities, the Zionist underground members came to the rehearsal and took me away.”  At night, the members had arranged for Elias to hide in a truck on its way to deliver Baghdad dates to Haifa. “We would drive at night and hide during the day. At night the date honey would freeze and during the day, it would melt,” recalled Elias.

“I was so sad that I had to leave that big role of Shylock behind. My Muslim director back in Baghdad told me about the Habima theater [Israel’s national theater], but he didn’t know of the problem of the accent in Israeli theater then.”

In Israel, Elias’s Middle Eastern (Mizrahi) accent in Hebrew in the European dominated theater was deemed unacceptable for the Israeli stage at the time.

After he fought in Israel’s War of Independence, Elias received minor roles in The Kameri Theater but later he reached out to Arab towns across Israel, and performed on stage in Arabic in front of audiences including in Kfar Yasif, Kfar Kassem and Nazareth.

His big break came in 1965 with the role of the unemployed and alcoholic father, Levi, in the movie, “HaYeled Me’ever LaRechov, (The Boy Across the Street), an Israeli film that dealt with the difficult social issues facing Israel  at the time.  The movie was a nationwide success and was noted in international film festivals held in Venice as well as in Teheran.

Other movies for which Elias became famous for, included “The Police Man” (Ha’shoter Azoulai), “Snooker” (Hagigah B’snooker), “Kazablan,” “James’ Journey to Israel,” “Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi,” among many others.

In 2013, Elias received a lifetime achievement award from the Israeli Artists’ association for his lifetime work at age 92. In addition to his acting career, he also worked to help disadvantaged and at-risk Israeli youth.

Israeli Police Nab 2 Palestinians for Stoning Israeli Bus, Wounding Driver

Israeli Police and IDF forces have arrested two Palestinians suspected of throwing stones at an Israeli bus and IDF soldiers last week, the Judea and Samaria District Police said Thursday.
The 17 and 18-year-old residents of El Arub, near Hebron, confessed to the attack, in which they lobbed stones at an Israeli passenger bus travelling on a highway in Judea and Samaria, injuring the driver.

The town is notorious for the numerous violent attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers that have occurred there, including incidents of stone-throwing and firebomb attacks on vehicles traveling along Hwy 60, a major route that passes through a main street in the village.

In a related incident on thursday, a tour bus carrying German tourists through Judea and Samaria was hit by a Molotov Cocktail, thrown by Palestinian assailants. The german tourists were apparently on a tour of the Palestinian Authority, and were luckily unharmed in the incident. IDF forces began scouring the are for the suspects.
