Fearful Way Home

Shots were fired at four Israeli vehicles in Route 465, in the Benjamin Regional Council, on Wednesday evening, January 14. Although no injuries or casualties were sustained, the shooting is an uncommon event that could signify the deterioration of the already fragile sense of security, for the residents of Israeli communities in the Benjamin Regional Council.

Tazpit News Agency spoke to Yechiel Kapach, the secretary of the Neve Tzuf (Halamish) community located in the Samaria hills.

“A terror attack that includes shooting is very rare, while stone-throwing terror attacks are much more common. They occur on a daily basis,” Kapach told Tazpit.

“The number of attacks depends on the general political situation in the country. When tension rises we see more terror attacks and when tension goes down we see less.”

Terror attacks include stone-throwing, shooting incidents, firework directed at people and cars as well as usage of Molotov cocktails. Tazpit News Agency reports that during December 2014 there were 27 stone-throwing incidents on the 465 route alone.

The 465 route is used by Israelis and Palestinians alike. It starts in the Benjamin Regional Council and crosses the green-line at the Rantis Checkpoint. Kapach told Tazpit News Agency that “the second you cross the Rantis Check point, it’s the wild wild west.”

“There is a real problem of sovereignty and enforcement of the Israeli law. We feel the lack of sovereignty in civil issues such as driving or illegal building for example, and it projects onto security issues,” he pointed out.

Kapach also added that Neve-Tzuf’s inhabitants felt so disappointed by the IDF’s inability to control security related incidents, that they started their own civil guard.

“I hope Israel can strengthen its sovereignty and enforce Israeli law so that real security will prevail.”

Israeli Solar Power Technology to Light Up Ethiopia

0

Ethiopia is aiming to enhance access to affordable and environmentally-friendly renewable energy for its population, with the country’s Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy announcing last month that it had signed an agreement with an Israeli solar-hybrid power company to further this goal. The leading Israeli developer of solar-biogas hybrid power technology, AORA, will be the first to provide solar-biogas hybrid power solutions for rural communities in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia often suffers from blackouts due to its lack of lack of power and two-thirds of the country’s citizens have no electricity.

“We are pleased to partner with the Ministry and look forward to bringing our technology to Ethiopia to provide the population with affordable access to power,” said Zev Rosenzweig, CEO of AORA, whose offices are based in Rehovot.

“Such access will have significant social and economic impact on off-grid communities, helping to provide power to schools and medical facilities, refrigeration for food processing and post-harvest storage, groundwater pumping and much more,” added Rosenzweig.

In November 2011, Ethiopia launched the Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy which aims to achieve the development objective of becoming a middle income, green economy nation by 2025. A primary goal entails the generation of energy from renewable sources for domestic and regional markets.

“We are transforming our Green Economy Strategy into action and are pleased to partner with AORA to help achieve our vision,” said Alemayehu Tegenu, Ethiopian Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy.

“AORA’s unique solar-hybrid technology is impressive and well-suited to provide both energy and heat to support local economic development in off-grid rural locations in Ethiopia,” said Tegenu.

AORA’s technology runs not only on solar radiation, but also on almost any gaseous or liquid fuel, including biogas, biodiesel and natural gas. This enables a variety of operational modes – from solar-only mode, where electricity is supplied from ample sunlight, to hybrid-mode when fuel helps generate full power when sunlight is insufficient. At night time or during days of heavy overcast, the fuel-only mode goes into operation. This guarantees an uninterrupted and stable power supply 24 hours a day in all weather conditions.

The AORA tulip-shaped solar power plant, whose technology was developed by the Weizmann Institute, requires less land to generate usable power and heat than other systems as well as less water. Each Tulip station is small and modular, and adaptable to topography.

Construction of the first pilot plant in Ethiopia is expected to begin by mid-2015. Following the trial, the Ethiopian government intends to expand deployment of AORA installations for rural economic development to off-grid communities in selected areas of the country.

Heartwarming Show of Solidarity During French Victims’ Funerals

0

Thousands of Israelis showed their solidarity and sympathy at the funerals of the four victims killed by a terrorist attack on the kosher supermarket Hyper Cacher in Paris.

The victims were buried on Tuesday, January 13 at noon in the Givat Shaul cemetery in Jerusalem. All the victims were Jewish; Yohan Cohen, Yoav Hattab, Phillipe Barham and Francois-Michel Saada.

Although the victims were French citizens, their families asked the Israeli authorities for permission to bury their bodies in Israel. Israel’s government agreed, and made the necessary arrangements.

The funerals were attended by many Israeli public figures, as well as key figures from the French Jewish community, numbered at 500,000 strong. Speeches were made by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, head of opposition Isaac Herzog and French Minister of Ecology and Sustainable Development and Energy, Segolene Royal.

Prime Minister Netanyahu talked about his visit to Paris the previous day during his speech at the funerals. “Yesterday, I returned from Paris, where I participated in the anti-terror march alongside leaders from all over the world. I think that the majority of them understand, or at least starting to understand, that radical Islam is a real threat to world peace”.The Israeli prime minister also added that Islamic terror is not just a Jewish or Israeli problem but a problem for all humanity. “It is time all people of all cultures unite, and eject these elements among us.”

President Rivlin addressed French minister, Royal, saying: “European leaders must obligate themselves to act in an effective manner; they must obligate themselves and act with a firm hand, so that Jewish people in Europe can feel safe again, whether in Toulouse, Paris, Brussels or Burgos.”

French Minister, Royal commented that “I want to give my condolences on behalf of the French Republic, which shares your grief…the victims were murdered for being Jewish, which is outrageous.”

“Anti-Semitism has no place in France and that is the message carried by the millions of French people who marched on Sunday.” Royal, announced in her eulogy that the four victims will receive a posthumous French honor, “Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur ” (Legion of Honor), which is the highest decorative honor bestowed in France.

Jerusalem supports France

0

JERUSALEM – Over 1,000 people took part in a solidarity rally for the French people organized by the Jerusalem municipality. The rally was held today, January 11, at the city council hall. Officials expressed support by the city of Jerusalem, for the French people and the Jewish community in France, in light of last weekend’s horrific terror attacks.

The rally began with a moment of silence, in tribute of the victims that lost their lives during last weekend’s terror attacks. During the moment of silence, hundreds of signs were raised, reading: “Je Suis Charlie” (I am Charlie), “Israel is Charlie” and “Je Suis Juif de France”, I am Jewish and from France.

Mayor Barkat commented that “the terror attack which struck Paris last weekend is an attack on all of us… the entire world can now understand, what we have endured here in Jerusalem and in Israel, murderous terror which is motivated by radical Islam”.

Barkat called Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo and expressed his condolences on behalf of the residents of Jerusalem. Barkat told Hidalgo: “The people of Jerusalem understand and share your pain. We must not let terror pay-off. Give strength to the residents of Paris, this strength will defeat terror.”

The Jerusalem municipality has announced its intention to hang a huge sign reading in French and English, “Jerusalem est Charlie, Jerusalem Hugs Paris”, in central Jerusalem’s Paris square. In addition, the Jerusalem municipality will hang 1,500 French flags on major roads throughout the city.

Barkat has instructed the Jerusalem municipality to create a special committee, which will help any Jewish citizen of France who wishes to immigrate to Israel. Regarding the subject, Barkat said: “I’ve heard about the feelings of doubt within the Jewish community in France, and I wish to say to my brothers and sisters in France: the gates of Zion are open and the entire Jewish people is at your side”.
