Breaking News: 55 Rockets Fired at Israel

Rocket Lands Near Sderot Library

In what was the heaviest rocket barrage against Israel in two years, 55 projectiles were fired from Gaza into Israel on Wednesday evening, March 12. The rockets were reported to have been launched from east Gaza City neighborhood of Shuja’iyya. Islamic Jihad’s military wing, Al-Quds Brigades claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks.

In Sderot, several sirens were sounded warning residents of impending rockets. One rocket reportedly landed near a municipal library. “We heard four Color Red sirens and an explosion,” Meital Ohayon of Sderot told Tazpit News Agency. Ohayon had been dressing her children in Purim costumes at the time of the attacks.

Elsewhere in southern Israel, a 57-year-old woman broke her hip as she raced to make it to a shelter in time.

The IDF stated that eight rockets had hit urban, civilian areas including Sderot. The IDF Spokesperson’s Office added that the Iron Dome rocket defense system intercepted three rockets.

Rocket warning sirens were heard across Israeli communities bordering the Gaza Strip including the Eshkol Regional Council and Sdot Negev Regional Council as well as Netivot and Beer Sheva.

The head of the Eshkol Regional Council, Haim Yellin stated that “since Operation Pillar of Defense, we have experienced quiet and we are finally living normal daily routines. This was the most significant escalation since that operation. The government of Israel must act accordingly both militarily and on a state level so that the quiet will return.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded saying that “It seems that the rocket fire came in response to our counter-terrorism operations yesterday. We will continue to thwart and harm those who wish to harm us and will against them with great intensity.”

Islamic Jihad declared that the firing of the rockets was in retaliation for Israel’s targeting and killing of three Islamic Jihad operatives as they prepared to fire at Israel from the Gaza Strip the previous day, on Tuesday, March 11.

Israel also recently intercepted an Iranian shipment of rockets heading to the Gaza Strip last week. Israeli military sources said that the 409 rockets on that shipment which also included arms were intended for Islamic Jihad.

Amazing! Virtual Tour of Mordechai and Esther’s Kever in Hamedan, Iran

For centuries, Iranian Jews,  particularly women praying for fertility, venerated the modest brick shrine. The first detailed accounts in the historical record are from Christian tourists in the 1800s and early 1900s. These records, which include outstanding illustrations, descriptions, and even photographs, were recently digitized–and provide a rare glimpse into the condition of the shrine in the past and the particular observances once held there.

One 19th-century visitor describes a marble plaque on the interior dome walls claiming that the structure was dedicated in the year 714 CE (Jewish calendar year 4474) by “?the two benevolent brothers Elias and Samuel, sons of Ismail Kachan.” Other visitors describe rooms covered in pilgrims’ graffiti in various languages as well as darkened by candle smoke; a stork’s nest sitting atop the shrine’s dome; and a prayer area within that was designed to enable worshippers to face the tombs and Jerusalem at same time.

They also recount that notes in Hebrew script were placed near the tombs, similar to how Jewish worshippers often tuck prayer notes into the stones of Jerusalem’s Wailing Wall. For Iranian Jews, who could only reach Jerusalem with great difficulty, the shrine served as a stand-in place at which to pray and weep.

ntil the 1970s, the shrine was hidden away in a crowded part of Hamadan, surrounded by houses, and only accessible through a narrow dirt alley. But in 1971, in honor of a national celebration of 2,500 years of Iranian monarchy, the Iranian Jewish Society commissioned architect Yassi (Elias) Gabbay to undertake a renovation.

Houses around the tomb were purchased and demolished, making the shrine accessible from the main street via a bridge Gabbay constructed over the new courtyard and a partially-underground synagogue chapel he also built, to complete the shrine complex. The subterranean chapel has a skylight in the shape of a Star of David that can be seen in Google Earth, quite possible making the Islamic Republic in Iran home to the only Jewish Star visible from space.

The renovation did not significantly alter the shrine itself, or the grave stones cluttering the plaza outside the old shrine. (Some prominent local Jews had in the past secured burial plots outside the shrine, which they considered holier than plots in the main Jewish cemetery in Hamadan.)

One of the old structure’s remarkable features that Gabbay preserved is its front door, a massive piece of granite with a hidden lock. Less than four feet high, the stunted doorframe forces visitors to bow as they enter, in deference to the site’s holy occupants.

An outer chamber holds tombs of famous rabbis and provides access by means of an archway to the interior chamber. The interior chamber features Hebrew writing along the walls and holds two carved sarcophagi, supposedly marking the burial spots of Esther and Mordecai. This chamber also houses a cabinet with a 300-year-old Torah scroll.

Today, Esther’s Tomb has lost some of its former splendor. Iranian authorities, for example, have removed an ornamented gate Gabbay had erected along the sidewalk using a geometric motif common in many mosques. The problem? Part of the classic motif forms a Jewish Star–a fact regime officials apparently considered intolerable (unlike the fence, the Star of David skylight is not visible from street level). Gabbay himself lives in exile, having fled the Islamic Revolution and restarted his architectural practice in Los Angeles, though he dreams of returning to see the site he transformed.

The question of whether the shrine actually marks the resting place of Esther and her uncle remains unanswered, and is perhaps unanswerable.

ZOA Re-Elects Pres. Mort Klein By A Landslide, Winning 93% Of The Vote

0

PHILADELPHIA, March 9–The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), at its 97th National Convention, held at the Hilton Hotel in Philadelphia, has re-elected National President Morton A. Klein, who garnered a landslide 93% of the vote of ZOA delegates from around the country. This reflected a clear mandate for Mort Klein’s leadership of the ZOA on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people and an overwhelming repudiation of his opponent’s false and outrageous allegations. In his own speech to the Convention, Mr. Klein answered virtually all of his opponent’s ludicrous allegations head-on.

Delegates flew into Philadelphia from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, New York, Detroit, Cleveland, Washington D.C., as well as from Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and other states to participate in the vote and the Convention deliberations.

Delegates at the Convention Dinner were treated to a passionate and inspiring keynote address from former contender for the Republican presidential nomination, U.S. Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN), who congratulated Mort Klein on his re-election victory and spoke of the ominous increase in the dangers facing Israel, exacerbated by the hostile policies of the Obama Administration, including the veiled threats that have issued in recent weeks from both President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry if Israel does not conform to American dictates for Israeli/Palestinian negotiations.

Mort Klein made a passionate speech about the anti-Israel myths surrounding the Arab/Israeli situation, including such issues as Jerusalem, the so-called ‘occupation,’ ‘settlements,’ Palestinian Authority (PA) statehood, the anti-Israel apartheid slur, and the falsity of PA president Mahmoud Abbas’ image as a moderate and peace-maker.

Convention delegates heard addresses from senior ZOA staff. The Director of the ZOA’s Israel Office, Jeff Daube, gave a detailed account of the ZOA efforts in Israel to promote the 2013 Levy Report, the distinguished legal commission appointed by the government, under the chairmanship of former Israeli Supreme Court Justice Edmond Levy, which made clear the legality of Jewish residence in Judea and Samaria. Mr. Daube also spoke of the ZOA’s efforts to secure the historic Mount of Olives Jewish cemetery from desecration and vandalism by Palestinian Arabs.

ZOA Government Relations Co-Director Dan Pollak elaborated on the major dangers posed by the Geneva Interim Deal on Iran’s nuclear weapons program, signed last November. He noted that Iranian exports had spiked 73% in January, following the relaxation of sanctions on Iran contained in the Geneva deal. ZOA Government Relations Co-Director Josh London spoke of the U.S. House committee investigation, convened at the ZOA’s urging, into U.S. funding of the PA, which had used U.S. aid to pay special salaries to convicted Palestinian terrorists jailed by Israel to reward them for murdering Jews. Mr. London noted that, the more Jews they murdered, the larger their salaries.

ZOA Campus Affairs Director Sharona Whisler gave a comprehensive outline of ZOA’s expanding initiatives on various college campuses to protect Jewish students from anti-Semitic intimidation masquerading as pro-Palestinian activism. She also spoke of the highly successful ZOA campus leadership mission to Israel, in which a record number of students had participated and ZOA campus programs which train students how to answer propaganda lies from Israel-haters on campus. Ms. Whisler proudly noted that the ZOA was the only major Jewish group to send college students to visit Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.

The Director of the ZOA’s Center for Middle East Policy, Dr. Daniel Mandel, delivered an address exposing some of the gaping deficiencies of the Geneva Interim Agreement on Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

ZOA Philadelphia Co-Presidents Jerry Verlin and Lee Bender delivered a detailed address outlining the vocabulary of biased media reportage which compromises Israel’s case and misleads the public, drawing on their book on the subject, Pressing Israel.

The Convention lunch featured a rousing keynote address by Chloe Simone Valdary, an African-American junior and international studies major at the University of New Orleans. Ms. Valdary, an innovative and tireless activist in support of Israel, spoke passionately of Israel’s righteous and just cause and recounted the profound effect participating on a ZOA college students trip to Israel had had on her activism and understanding of the truth of the Arab war on Israel. Ms. Valary noted that, on this trip, she became aware that the so-called ‘Jewish settlements’ were in fact beautiful Jewish towns and cities.

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) is the oldest and one of the largest pro-Israel organizations in the United States. With offices around the country and in Israel, the ZOA educates the public, elected officials, the media, and college/high school students about the truth of the ongoing Arab war against Israel. The ZOA works to strengthen U.S.-Israel relations through educational activities, public affairs programs and our work on Capitol Hill, and to combat anti-Semitism and anti-Israel bias in the media, in textbooks, in schools and on college campuses. Under the leadership of such presidents as Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, Rabbis Abba Hillel Silver and Stephen Wise, and current President Morton A. Klein, the ZOA has been – and continues to be – on the front lines of Jewish activism.  www.zoa.org

Returning to Music 30 Years After Return to Judaism

0

30 years after leaving a stellar musical career in France to connect to his Judaism, Gilbert (Aharon) Sitbon has returned to the studio to record a stirring rendition of the classic prayer “Adon Olam,” set to a unique French tune.

As a 20-year-old Sitbon began performing in France, quickly becoming a major singer and gaining recognition throughout Europe. Sitbon released dozens of recordings and sold hundreds of thousands of copies of his albums, becoming one of the most played singers on French radio.

However, right at the height of his career, with his agent asking to sign him for a long-term performance contract, Sitbon made a life-changing decision to devote himself to Torah study, becoming a Chabad Chassid and spending his time between Israel and France.

IDF Investigation Shows: IDF Soldiers were Attacked by Jordanian Judge

0

JERUSALEM – “The terrorist attacked IDF forces with a pole, tried to steal a soldier’s weapon, and then attempted to strangle another soldier at the scene,” – this is how the IDF described yesterday’s incident (Feb. 10)  in which Raed A-Zayater, 37,  was shot by IDF soldiers after attacking them. A-Zayater, a Palestinian, served as a magistrate in Jordan.

A preliminary IDF investigation concluded that A-Zayater, whom the IDF has categorized as a terrorist, attacked Israeli soldiers at the Allenby Bridge crossing on Israel’s border with Jordan as he was crossing into Israel, reportedly on his way to visit his family in Schemen. A-Zayater charged at the forces with a metal pole while shouting “Allah Akbar,” and then attempted to seize one soldier’s weapon. Soldiers responded to the attack in accordance with standard procedures, firing at A-Zayater’s lower extremities. A-Zayater’s then began to strangle a soldier, and the forces resorted to using live fire, resulting in his death. He was buried today in Shechem.

Although the IDF’s investigation is ongoing, its preliminary findings were extensive and included interviews with tens of witnesses at the scene.

A-Zayater’s death has spawned a sharp response from the Jordanian Government, which summoned Israeli ambassador to Jordan and demanded an explanation to the incident and that an investigation of the incident be launched immediately. Tens of Jordanians protested in front of Israel’s embassy last night, demanding the removal of the embassy and the annulment of the peace agreement with Israel.

Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu issued a statement today sending his condolences to the Jordanian government and people, announcing an Israeli-Jordanian panel would further investigate this incident, which has generated much tension between the two governments.

WHAT DOES HAMAN SAY
(Lyrics)

King says come
Queen says no
Advisor says it’s time for her to go

With Vashti gone
Achashveirosh
Needs a queen to call his own
Esther is brought
Shushan’s abuzz
As the king goes oo la la
But there’s one sound, that no one knows:

WHAT DOES HAMAN SAY???

Second to the king-a-king-a-king!
Bling-bling-bling-bling-blinga-blinga-bling!
Special signet ring-a-ring-a-ring!

WHAT HAMAN SAY???

Ba ba ba ba ba ba BOW!
Ba ba ba ba ba ba BOW!
Ba ba ba ba ba ba BOW!

WHAT HAMAN SAY???

On your, on your knees you go!
On your, on your knees you go!
On your, on your knees you go!

WHAT HAMAN SAY???

You you you you you you Jew you Jew!
You you you you you you Jew you Jew!
You you you you you you Jew you Jew!

WHAT HAMAN SAY???

Mordechai
Though he knows
Haman eyes him
He’s composed

Haman’s paused
He stands still
No he won’t bend to his will

Haman is mad, this Jew’s too bold
Time to kill him and his kind
Makes a decree, to be enforced
Kill the jews with no remo-o-o-o-orse
But of co-o-ourse
he l-o-o-o-st

Esther knew and told a-cha-shve-ro-o-osh
He went for a stroll
Came back and behold

WHAT DOES HAMAN SAY???

Nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-NO!!!
Nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-NO!!!
Nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-NO!!!

WHAT HAMAN SAY???

Pu-pu-pu-pu-pu-pu-put me down!
Pu-pu-pu-pu-pu-pu-put me down!
Pu-pu-pu-pu-pu-pu-put me down!

WHAT HAMAN SAY???

A-hee-ahee ha-hee!
A-hee-ahee ha-hee!
A-hee-ahee ha-hee!

WHAT HAMAN SAY???

Boo-hoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo!
Woo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo!

WHAT DOES HAMAN SAY???

Now Haman and his sons
Are ancient history
Hanging from his own gallows
While they hang from a tree
What is your sound?
We don’t care anyway
You perished with your family
We’re here to staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

Arur Haman asher
bikesh l’abdi
baruch Mordechai
(G-d sent us a wake-up. We davened and Hashem forgave us. So Haman failed to slay us.)
ha’ Yehudi.
I’m a Jew
I know who
Really runs the show
(G-d is the creator)
