Rabbi Jonathan Gewirtz – Here’s a Tip

Operation Inspiration

We all love a good insider trick or piece of knowledge we didn’t have before that can help us. Segulos, special practices which are auspicious for certain outcomes, are extremely popular, and in general, we all like having an edge on the competition when it comes to being successful.

You might get a hot tip from someone who understands a certain industry better than you, like commodities or cryptocurrency, and you’d be more likely to act on that guidance since it’s coming from an expert. Well, the Jewish People have a lot of experts on a lot of things, but one of the surest resources we have is the brain trust known colloquially as, “Chazal,” referring to our Sages.

In the Mishna in Pirkei Avos, they advise us to serve Hashem not as a servant who expects a reward, but as one who does not expect a reward. Some who learn this Mishna ask, “Wait a minute, do you mean to say there’s no reward? Forget it. I’m outta here!” But they are mistaken. Certainly there is a reward for everything we do, and even for things we stop ourselves from doing. But that isn’t the point of this advice. It’s quite different, and I recently had an experience which sheds light on this.

I needed to go to the airport so I ordered an Uber/Lyft/Javer, whatever Ride Share app you prefer, and it gave me my price. The driver was about 15 minutes away so we brought out bags to the driveway and waited. When he arrived, he asked where we were going. When I told him we were going to the airport, he said, “Oh no, I’m sorry but to go there I have to charge you $20 extra. I have to cover the gas and the tolls.” I told him the app was supposed to include all that and he replied that they don’t pay him enough for them. I had no choice, so we got in the car.

It was a very quiet ride to the airport, except for my wife and I texting each other about our shock and dismay at what had happened. When we got to the airport, I handed the driver a twenty-dollar bill, and took our bags from his car. But that wasn’t quite the end of it.

You see, at the end of the ride, these apps ask you to rate the driver, and to give him a tip. Based on the length and cost of the trip, I likely would have tipped the driver more than $20. I understand that many people rely on tips and I do my best to show appreciation to them. They’re working on my behalf and may not be getting paid enough. When they go out of their way for me, I like to go out of my way for them. But this time, I tipped nothing. He’d already gotten his money by extorting the twenty dollars and I never want to see that driver again. By demanding the extra money, he actually lost out.

A different time, I drove with a driver who was courteous, kind, and friendly. He was professional and seemed to be doing his best to make the ride pleasant. I gave him a larger tip than normal, because I felt he cared about doing a good job for me rather than just caring about his wallet.

But didn’t Chazal teach us this so long ago? Yes, indeed. The Mishna speaks of our motivation in serving Hashem, and how it translates. We are going to get our money one way or the other, but if we “force” Hashem’s hand, He’s likely to give us what we deserve, not what He’s capable of tipping. And that has huge downside potential.

Consider this. If we want Hashem to reward us for what we do, don’t you think He’ll see the disingenuousness of our behavior? If our hearts aren’t in it, and we’re just following the Torah for self-preservation and for our own benefit, we won’t really be serving Him, but ourselves.

Any employer can tell you that the person who asks for money for each little thing they do for the company is not seen as an asset. They are in it for themselves and don’t really care about the organization. Bosses recognize that as good as someone may be at their job, if their main focus is themselves, you can’t count on them when things get tough. They are not nearly as valuable as the loyal employee who wants to see things done right, even if it’s more work for him or her.

And that’s why the Mishna suggests we serve Hashem with no intention of getting a reward. Not because there isn’t one, but because our main focus is the good of the organization, being the world, and to make our boss happy, being HaKadosh Baruch Hu.

When we work as loyal servants, happy with whatever wage He gives us because we know we’re doing something beyond money with our service, Hashem sees and appreciates that we’re putting Him first. And guess what? At the end of the ride, we will get rated. Were we a five-star driver with a clean car and friendly conversation, or were we a barely passable three-star driver who played obnoxious music and ignored his passengers as he got them to their destinations?

How Hashem felt about our performance will stay with us forever, and more than that, if He’s happy with how much we extended ourselves for His comfort on the journey, He’ll be ecstatic to be able to lavish us with reward, because He is the ultimate “big tipper.” And oh yeah, you’re welcome.

Chabad.org – Tu BiShvat in a Minute

When’s the last time you wished a tree Happy New Year? The 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat is a great opportunity. It’s known as Tu BiShvat, the New Year for Trees.

Why do trees celebrate their New Year so much later than ours? It has to do with the rainy season in Israel, which commences with the festival of Sukkot. It takes four months for the rains to saturate the soil, nurture the trees and coax them into producing fruit. This is important to know if you are planning to give your tithes of fruits, as is done in the Land of Israel, because the required tithes vary from year to year. It’s also important if you are a tree and looking for something to celebrate.

We humans can also celebrate along with the treesWe humans can also celebrate along with the trees. After all, the Torah says, “Man is a tree of the field.” We are nurtured by deep roots, as far back as Abraham and Sarah; we reach upwards to the heavens while standing firmly on the ground; and when we do all this right, we produce fruits that benefit the world—namely, our good deeds.

Traditional Observances:

Eat some fruit on this day. Best if you can get some of those fruits for which Israel is famous: olives, dates, grapes, figs and pomegranates.

The blessing on fruit:

Ba-ruch atah Ado-nai, Elo-hei-nu me-lech ha-olam, borei pri ha-etz.

[Blessed are You, L?rd our G?d, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the tree.]

If tasting a fruit for the first time in its season, recite the Shehecheyanu blessing before saying the fruit blessing:

Ba-ruch a-tah Ado-nai, Elo-hei-nu me-lech ha-olam, she-heche-ya-nu ve-ki-ye-ma-nu ve-higi-a-nu liz-man ha-zeh.

[Blessed are You, L?rd our G?d, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion.]

Some have the custom to eat carob. The master Kabbalist Arizal would eat fifteen types of fruit on this day!

Netanyahu leads Tu Bishvat tree-planting ceremony in honor of Jerusalem terror victims

0

The Israeli prime minister planted an olive tree close to the synagogue where a Palestinian terrorist killed seven people last month.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led a tree-planting ceremony on Monday to mark Tu Bishvat in the Neve Ya’akov neighborhood of Jerusalem, where a Palestinian terrorist killed seven people last month.

Netanyahu was joined by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion and family members of the murder victims, as well as police officers, medics and paramedics who treated the wounded at the scene of the Jan. 27 attack. The following day, another Palestinian terrorist shot and seriously wounded an Israeli father and son near the entrance to the City of David National Park adjacent to the Old City in the Israeli capital.

“We know that the proper response to terrorism is to strike at it and to deepen our roots in the soil of our homeland. We are striking at terrorism. A day later, a murderous band tried to carry out another murder at a restaurant at Almog Junction, to murder dozens of Israeli citizens and—miraculously—they failed. Today, IDF soldiers, together with the ISA [Shin Bet], have eliminated five of these terrorists, two of whom tried to carry out the attack at Almog Junction,” added the prime minister.

Netanyahu was referring to an operation overnight Sunday by Israeli security forces in which they arrested the terrorist cell responsible for an attempted mass shooting at a restaurant near Jericho.

On Jan. 28, two men armed with an assault rifle and bulletproof vests approached the Me Casa Restaurant near the Israeli town of Vered Yericho, but managed to fire only a single shot before their weapon jammed, the IDF said.

Nobody was injured in the attack.

Israeli forces came under fire during the arrest raid on Sunday in Aqbat Jaber, a refugee camp just south of Jericho, and returned fire, killing several gunmen.

“The proper response to terrorism is to fight it and to plant deep roots in our homeland. This is what we are doing today here in Neve Ya’akov. This is what we are doing throughout the country. We will not stop planting but will continue apace,” said Netanyahu.

“I embrace you, dear families. We will overcome together. The memory of your loved ones will always be with you, forever, and with us as well; however, the proper response for the State of Israel is to deepen the attachment of the people of Israel here in our land,” added the Israeli premier.

Israel captures terror cell behind attempted mass shooting near Jericho

Israeli forces came under fire during the arrest operation in the Aqbat Jaber refugee camp, and several Palestinian gunmen were killed in the ensuing exchange.

Israeli security forces on Sunday night arrested the terrorist cell responsible for an attempted mass shooting at a restaurant near Jericho last month, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Israeli forces came under fire during the arrest raid in Aqbat Jaber, a refugee camp just south of Jericho, and returned fire, killing an unspecified number of gunmen, the IDF said in a statement.

On Jan. 28, two armed men armed with an assault rifle and bulletproof vests approached the Me Casa Restaurant near the Israeli town of Vered Yericho, but managed to fire only a single shot before their weapon jammed, the IDF said.

The IDF, in conjunction with the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), launched a manhunt, tracking the terrorists to Aqbat Jaber, which lies just to the north of Vered Yericho, where they were believed to be hiding with the help of local residents and family members, and planning additional attacks.

The IDF said on Monday that it would “continue to act to thwart any attempt by terrorist organizations and operatives, wherever they may be, to promote terrorist activity against the State of Israel, its citizens and residents.”

SHAKING IN BUFFALO: Rare 3.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Western New York

0

A small earthquake rumbled through western New York early Monday, alarming people in a region unaccustomed to such shaking but apparently causing no significant damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey preliminarily reported a 3.8 earthquake centered east of Buffalo in the suburb of West Seneca at about 6:15 a.m. Seismologist Yaareb Altaweel said it was the region’s strongest quake in at least 40 years.

The shaking lasted a few seconds and sent residents first to their windows and then to social media in search of an explanation.

“It felt like a car hit my house in Buffalo. I jumped out of bed,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted. County emergency services officials confirmed the earthquake was felt in at least a 30-mile radius, including in Niagara Falls, about 20 miles north of Buffalo, he said.

Earthquake Canada, which measured a 4.2 magnitude event, reported it was felt slightly in southern Ontario.

Small earthquakes are not unusual in upstate New York but are rarely felt as strongly. The earthquake comes on the heels of two record-breaking weather events in the region: A snowstorm that dropped as much as 7 feet of snow in November and a blizzard in December that is blamed for 47 deaths.

The western New York earthquake occurred hours after a powerful quake killed hundreds in Turkey and Syria. A USGS spokesperson said there is no connection between the two events.

Search and rescue teams along with medical assistance are being readied following a request by Turkish authorities.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Israel is preparing aid for Turkey following the massive earthquake that struck the country overnight Sunday, following requests for help from Ankara, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday.

“At the request of the Turkish government, I have instructed all authorities to make immediate preparations to provide medical, and search-and-rescue assistance,” he announced. “The foreign and defense ministers have already been in contact with their counterparts and we will – in the coming hours – agree on the dispatching of a delegation as soon as possible.”

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that his special teams, which are attached to the Home Front Command, are being mobilized to help.

“The security forces are ready to offer any assistance that may be required,” he said. “The security system has gained a lot of experience over the years in dealing with disaster areas and the mission of saving lives.”

In conversation with his counterpart, Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu, Foreign Minister Eli Cohen offered to dispatch a significant number of search and rescue personnel. Çavusoglu expressed his appreciation for Israel’s willingness to stand by Turkey’s side in its hour of need.

Medical intervention is also being offered by private Israeli organizations.

United Hatzalah of Israel, Israel’s national volunteer EMS organization, is already preparing to send a relief mission.

“During the early hours of the morning, I notified the Foreign Minister, the Defense Minister, the Health Minister, and the head of the National Security Council (NSC) that we are standing at the ready to send a relief mission consisting of doctors, paramedics, EMTs, members of the Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit, and members of the Search and Rescue Units, with medical supplies and humanitarian aid in order to provide assistance to the thousands of people in need in Turkey,”  said United Hatzalah CEO Eli Pollack.

Israel’s version of the Red Cross, Magen David Adom, also announced that it had approached the Turkish Red Crescent and the International Federation of the Red Crescent in Europe, offering humanitarian and medical aid.

“In my name and in the name of the people of Israel, I express my deep sorrow for the terrible tragedy that befell Turkey and the region following the earthquake last night,” President Isaac Herzog stated.

“My condolences to the president and the people of Turkey for the enormous destruction and loss of life. The State of Israel through its authorized bodies is always ready to help in any possible way. Our hearts go out to the grieving families and the Turkish nation at this difficult moment,” he added.

Prime Minister Netanyahu also said that Israel will provide aid to Syria, after a request was made by a “diplomatic official.”

According to a report by Channel 13, Moscow sent the request to Israel.

The earthquake, which struck at 3:17 a.m. in the Kahramanmaras province near the Syrian border, measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and was felt as far away as Romania. There were also several strong aftershocks. The Turkish death count has already reached over 1,000, with thousands more injured. An unknown number of people are still buried under the rubble.

In a televised speech, President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an said that 2,400 people have been successfully pulled from the wreckage.

The weather has also been noted as a danger, as a cold front has moved in, bringing rain and snow.

Syrian state television reported at least 386 dead on its side of the border due to the earthquake, with the “White Helmets” group stating that 147 were dead in opposition-held territory.

Fedex Cargo Plane Nearly Hits Passenger Flight, Leading To FAA Investigation

0

A cargo plane could have collided with an aircraft carrying commercial passengers at an Austin airport after air traffic controllers gave both planes clearance to use the same runway Saturday morning.

A FedEx cargo plane was moments away from landing on a runway where a Southwest Airlines flight was taking off, the Federal Aviation Administration said, before the cargo plane abruptly changed course. Radar of the near-collision showed the FedEx plane appearing to fly directly over the Southwest jet, and at their closest points horizontally, the two aircraft were less than 1,000 feet apart, according to a flight-tracking group that analyzed the data.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident, which the NTSB described as a “possible runway incursion.”

FedEx Flight 1432 was cleared to land at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport’s Runway 18-Left at 6:40 a.m. Central time, the FAA said in a statement based on preliminary information.

At that point, the FedEx aircraft was still several miles from the airport.

Shortly before the FedEx plane was due to land, an air traffic controller cleared Southwest Flight 708 to depart from the same runway, the FAA statement said.

The pilot of the FedEx airplane discontinued the landing and pulled up, the FAA said, and the Southwest plane took off safely, bound for Cancún. The FedEx flight circled the airfield and landed safely 12 minutes later, according to Flight Radar 24, which tracks aircraft and flights.

The NTSB was sending two investigators to Austin, NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss told The Washington Post on Sunday. A preliminary NTSB report could be available in 15 days.

In an animated video released by Flight Radar 24, the Boeing 767 cargo plane operated by FedEx approaches the same runway that the Southwest plane was using.

The cargo plane nears then directly passes over the commercial flight. For a few seconds it can be seen flying directly over the Southwest plane, then it makes a sharp turn away from the runway.

According to Flight Radar 24, the Southwest plane was cleared to take off when the FedEx plane was three miles from the runway.

It is unclear whether it was air traffic controllers who alerted the pilots about the imminent collision, or whether either of the pilots saw the other aircraft.

In an audio recording, reportedly from air traffic control in Austin, a warning is issued: “Southwest abort. FedEx is on the go,” but it is yet to be determined if that was issued by the pilot of the Boeing 767 or air traffic controllers. The Post could not verify the authenticity of that recording.

Southwest Airlines and FedEx referred The Post’s questions about the investigation to federal authorities Sunday.

The FedEx flight, which was carrying cargo from Memphis, “safely landed after encountering an event just before landing at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Saturday morning,” said Shannon Davis, a FedEx spokesperson.

Austin-Bergstrom International spokeswoman Elizabeth Ferrer told The Post that the airport was willing to assist the investigation.

A similar incident involving a near-collision of two planes occurred last month at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, where a Delta Air Lines pilot aborted a takeoff to avoid hitting another jet, according to federal aviation officials and an audio recording of the incident.

Air traffic controllers stopped Delta Flight 1943 as it prepared to take off at 8:45 p.m., after noticing that an American Airlines Boeing 777 was crossing the runway in front of it. The Delta plane, a Boeing 737, came to a safe stop about 1,000 feet from where American Flight 106 had crossed the runway from an adjacent taxiway, the FAA said.

It all happened in about 12 seconds, according to an audio recording by LiveATC, a website that monitors and shares air traffic control communications.

Powerful Quake Rocks Turkey and Syria, Kills Over 2,300 People

0

ADANA, Turkey/ DAMASCUS (Reuters) – A huge earthquake killed more than 2,300 people and injured thousands more on Monday in central Turkey and northwest Syria, flattening apartment blocks and heaping more destruction on Syrian cities already devastated by years of war.

The magnitude 7.8 quake, which hit before sunrise in bitter winter weather, was the worst to strike Turkey this century. It was followed in the early afternoon by another large quake of magnitude 7.7.

It was not immediately clear how much damage had been done by the second quake, which like the first was felt across the region and endangered rescuers struggling to pull casualties from the rubble, often using their bare hands to remove masonry.

“We were shaken like a cradle. There were nine of us at home. Two sons of mine are still in the rubble, I’m waiting for them,” said a woman with a broken arm and injuries to her face, speaking in an ambulance near the wreckage of a seven-story block where she had lived in Diyarbakir in southeast Turkey.

President Tayyip Erdogan said 5,383 had been injured but he could not predict how much the death toll would rise as search and rescue efforts continued. He added that 2,818 buildings had collapsed.

“Everyone is putting their heart and soul into efforts although winter season, cold weather and the earthquake happening during the night makes things more difficult,” he said.

Live footage from Turkish state broadcaster TRT showed a building collapse in the southern province of Adana after the second quake. It was not immediately clear if it was evacuated.

In Syria, already wrecked by more than 11 years of civil war, the health ministry said about 430 people had been killed and more than 1,000 injured. In the Syrian rebel-held northwest, a United Nations spokesperson said 255 people had died.

In Diyarbakir, Reuters journalists saw dozens of rescue workers searching through a mound of debris, all that was left of a big building, and hauling off bits of wreckage as they looked for survivors. Occasionally they raised their hands and called for quiet, listening for sounds of life.

Footage circulated on social media showed two neighboring buildings collapsing one after the other in Syria’s Aleppo, filling the street with billowing dust.

Two residents of the city, which has been heavily damaged in the war, said the buildings had fallen in the hours after the quake, which was also felt in Israel.

In the Syrian rebel-held town of Jandaris in Aleppo Province, a mound of concrete, steel rods and bundles of clothes lay where a multistory building once stood.

“There were 12 families under there. Not a single one came out. Not one,” said a thin young man, his eyes wide open in shock and his hand bandaged.

Raed Fares of the Syrian White Helmets, a rescue service in rebel-held territory known for pulling people from the ruins of buildings destroyed by air strikes, said they were in “a race against time to save the lives of those under the rubble.”

Abdul Salam al Mahmoud, a Syrian in the town of Atareb, said it felt “like the apocalypse.”

The casualty toll in northwestern Syria was expected to increase, a spokesperson for the U.N. office for coordinating humanitarian affairs in northwestern Syria said.

“We have been dealing with weather events and snowstorms but nothing on the scale of an earthquake of this magnitude. It just adds on to all the layers of suffering,” said Madevi Sun-Suon, the spokesperson.

Syrian state media showed footage of rescue teams searching for survivors in heavy rain and sleet. President Bashar al-Assad held an emergency Cabinet meeting to review the damage and discuss the next steps, his office said.

People in Damascus and in the Lebanese cities of Beirut and Tripoli ran into the street and took to their cars to get away from their buildings in fear of collapses, witnesses said.

Footage on broadcaster CNNTurk showed the historic Gaziantep Castle was severely damaged.

In the Turkish city of Malatya, a rescue worker crawled into a collapsed building, trying to identify a survivor trapped under the wreckage, in footage released by Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

Erdogan said 45 countries had offered to help the search and rescue efforts.

The United States was “profoundly concerned” about the quake and was monitoring events closely, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said. “We stand ready to provide any and all needed assistance,” he said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the overnight quake struck at a depth of 17.9 km. It reported a series of earthquakes, one of 6.7 magnitude.

The region straddles seismic fault lines.

“The combination of large magnitude and shallow depth made this earthquake extremely destructive,” Mohammad Kashani, Associate Professor of Structural and Earthquake Engineering at the University of Southampton, said.

It was Turkey’s most severe quake since 1999, when one of similar magnitude devastated Izmit and the heavily populated eastern Marmara Sea region near Istanbul, killing more than 17,000.

Florida community in shock after Jewish Lyft driver kidnapped and murdered

0

Gary Levin found dead days after family reported him missing. Suspect arrested while driving victim’s car.

The Jewish community of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is in shock after a Jewish Lyft driver was kidnapped and murdered while working.

Police believe that Gary Levin, 74, was kidnapped and murdered by an angry passenger he had picked up. His family reported him missing on Tuesday. He was last seen alive on Monday.

Human remains were found on Saturday in a wooded area Okeechobee County, Florida, near where Levin had dropped off a passenger right before his disappearance. The remains were later identified as Levin.

His daughter, Lindsay DiBetta, told reporters: “There’s no way he would pick someone up in Miami and drive all the way to Okeechobee without letting his partner know. They had dinner plans that day, but he never came home.”

A suspect, Matthew Scott Flores, was arrested after a police chase in North Carolina while driving Levin’s car. Flores is wanted for an unrelated murder in Florida.
