Political source: US backing Israel in conflict with Hamas

Biden Administration said to not be pressuring Israel to end Operation Guardian of the Walls.

Although the United States has been criticizing Israel in recent days, according to political sources, it is not exerting pressure to end Operation Guardian of the Walls against Hamas.

A political source quoted in Kan News said that “the United States is giving Israel its backing, but their expectation is that the operation will not last much longer and that there will be no harm to the uninvolved.”

On Saturday night, Israeli Ambassador to the US and the UN Gilad Erdan thanked US President Joe Biden for his support for Israel’s right to defend itself.

“Thank you, President Biden, for your strong message. May the rest of the international community follow your lead and support Israel’s right to defend itself,” Erdan wrote on Twitter.

As opposed to the US position, Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau wrote on Twitter Sunday morning that “Canada continues to follow the situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza with grave concern. We urge all parties to take immediate steps to end the violence, de-escalate tensions, protect all civilians, refugees, journalists and media workers.”

“Canada reiterates the fundamental importance of protecting journalists and will always stand for media freedom. They are the cornerstone of any fair, strong, and vibrant society and must be free to do their work. Their safety and security must always be ensured,” Garneau added.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also said he was deeply disturbed by the Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, in which a high-rise building in which foreign media operated was destroyed.

Guterres added that he was ‘appalled’ by the growing number of civilians injured and killed as a result of the attacks.

Last night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a statement to the media on Operation Guardian of the Walls and the ongoing Hamas rocket attacks on Israel.

“It has been five days since Hamas brazenly fired rockets at Jerusalem and other Israeli cities in a totally unprovoked attack,” Netanyahu said.

“This past week, millions of Israelis were forced into bomb shelters as missiles rained down on our cities. Several Israelis have been killed. Many more have been wounded. You know and I know, no country would tolerate this. Israel will not tolerate this.

“Israel has responded forcefully to these attacks and we will continue to respond forcefully until the security of our people is reinstated and restored.

“We’ve eliminated dozens of Hamas terrorists and taken out hundreds of terrorist sites, including missile launchers and buildings that Hamas used to plan and perpetrate these attacks.

“Two nights ago, Israel also seriously degraded the terror infrastructure of Hamas. We knocked out part of the vast subterranean tunnel network that Hamas uses to attack Israel.

“I want to remind the world that in firing on our cities, Hamas is committing a double war crime. They’re targeting our civilians and hiding behind Palestinian civilians, effectively using them as human shields.

“As always, Israel is doing everything possible to protect our civilians and keep Palestinian civilians out of harm’s way. We demonstrated this yet again today when we warned civilians to vacate the building used by the Hamas terror intelligence. They vacated the premises before the target was destroyed and that’s why you don’t hear of casualties from these collapsing terror towers because we take special care to avoid these civilian casualties, exactly the opposite of Hamas.”

“Defeating Hamas does not only serve Israel’s interest, it serves the interests of all those who seek peace, stability and security in the Middle East.

“I want to thank Israel’s many friends in the international community who have strongly backed Israel’s action in defending ourselves. I want to thank the President of the United States Joe Biden and I want to thank the many countries, including European countries, who flew the Israeli flag in solidarity on their government buildings.

“No one should have any equivocation about the choice that is so clear here and I want to thank President Biden for his clear and unequivocal support. You cannot equate a democracy that values life with a terror organization that glorifies death.

“I also want to say a word about the violence we have seen in recent days within Israeli towns, from Lod to Bat Yam, from Akko to Haifa. The Jewish state will not tolerate pogroms against our citizens. We will not allow our Jewish citizens to be lynched or to live in fear of murderous Arab gangs. We will not tolerate the torching of synagogues and the torching of property.

“At the same time, we will not allow Jews to take the law into their own hands and attack innocent Arabs, or lynch an innocent Arab; there was one such case, such effort. We will not allow these attacks on innocent Jews or Arabs alike. To tolerate this unacceptable vigilantism and violence is to pave a way to anarchy.

“Israel is the Jewish and democratic state, where all our citizens, Jews, Arabs and everyone else, are equal before the law and will receive equal protection from those who enforce the law.

“I am fully confident that Israel will be able to deal with these threats from without and these threats from within. I am confident in our army. I am confident in our police. And above all, I am confident in the resolve and determination of the people of Israel.

“Just as we’ve always done, we will weather this storm and emerge stronger than ever. Thank you.” Netanyahu concluded.

Pro-Palestinian rioters in Europe attack police

0

Pro-Palestinian rioters in Berlin threw stones, bottles, fireworks at law enforcement, emulating similar rioting by Arabs in Judea and Samaria.

On Saturday, police broke up a pro-Palestinian riot of 3,500 people for failure to comply with coronavirus distancing rules. Rioters responded by throwing stones, bottles and fireworks in a scene reminiscent of Arab rioting in Judea and Samaria.

Meanwhile, French riot police fired tear gas and used water cannons Saturday in Paris as pro-Palestinian rioters defied a ban on marching in the French capital.

In Paris, protesters scattered and played cat-and-mouse with security forces in the city’s northern neighborhoods after their starting point for a planned march was blocked.

Paris Police Chief Didier Lallement had ordered 4,200 security forces into the streets and closed shops around the kick-off point for the march after an administrative court confirmed the ban due to fears of violence.

Authorities noted that a banned July 2014 pro-Palestinian protest in Paris degenerated into violence.

Organizers sought to “denounce the latest Israeli aggressions.”

“Stop Annexation. Palestine Will Vanquish,” read one poster in a small crowd facing off with police.

Protesters shifted from neighborhood to neighborhood in Paris as police closed in on them, sometimes with tear gas and water cannons, and police said 44 people were arrested. In a lengthy standoff, protesters pelted a line of security forces with projectiles before police pushed them to the edge of northern Paris.

“We don’t want scenes of violence. We don’t want a conflict imported to French soil,” government spokesman Gabriel Attal said.

Demonstrators chanting “Free Palestine!” marched through London’s Hyde Park and gathered outside the Israeli embassy’s gates, watched by a large number of police.

In other French cities, large pro-Palestinian crowds marched Saturday in Strasbourg in the east and Marseille on the Mediterranean Sea.

In Madrid, protesters held signs that read “”USA Terrorist State” and “Muslim Lives Matter.”

120 rockets fired at Israel in 12 hours * IDF confirms strike on Hamas leader’s house

0

IDF spokesman confirms strikes on homes of senior Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar and his brother, as well as the head of Hamas’ R&D program. IDF also targeting multiple rocket launchers.

Hamas fired some 120 rockets at Israel between 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday, the IDF reported Sunday morning.

About 11 of the rockets missed Israel entirely and landed in the Gaza Strip, while Israel’s air defenses intercepted several dozen more that were tracking toward populated areas.

IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Hidai Zilberman said Sunday that some 130 Hamas terrorists have been killed in IDF strikes since the start of Operation Guardian of the Walls, which entered its seventh day on Sunday.

Zilberman confirmed that the IDF had targeted the homes of senior Hamas leaders in Gaza.

“We attacked the home of Yahya Sinwar in Khan Younis and the home of his brother, who is responsible for personnel and logistics in Hamas. Both homes serve as bases for terrorism. These were only part of the strikes on [Hamas] operatives’ homes. Overnight, we also attacked the home of the Zeitoun brigade commander, head of Hamas’ research and development,” he said.

Zilberman noted that the focus of Israel’s strike had been Hamas leaders; rocket launchers, and continued attacks on Hamas’ “Metro” underground tunnel network.

“We will continue to deepen our attacks on Hamas … overnight, we continued our operation against Hamas’ tunnel network. We carried out the second stage of the operation to destroy its Metro in the northern and central parts of Gaza. This is a massive attack, although less than Thursday’s.”

“There are more stages to come, including a methodical offensive against its attack tunnels. Right now, various officials in the terrorist organization are afraid to go underground – not only leaders, but operatives, as well. No one wants to ‘ride’ the Metro,” Zilberman said.

In addition, he explained, since Friday the IDF had successfully taken out 45 multiple rocket launchers, nearly one per hour. “We are targeting their rocket launchers that propel rockets to a lot of different places in Israel,” he said.

According to Zilberman, Hamas and the other terrorist groups in Gaza could fire every hour, but they were not taking into account the need to conserve ammunition.

Early Sunday, Hamas launched a spate of rocket attacks on southern Israel early Sunday following a night of heavy Israeli airstrikes against its infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

Shortly after midnight Saturday, Hamas unleashed dozens of rockets toward central Israel and the coastal plain region, amid threats to aim at Tel Aviv. Overnight Saturday, Israeli Air Force aircraft continued to operate, with one of its strikes targeting a Hamas military intelligence site.

Overnight Saturday, the IDF published a list of the targets the IAF had eradicated throughout the day, as well as some of the senior members of Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad who have been confirmed dead since the beginning of Operation Guardian of the Walls.

UN chief ‘dismayed’ by Israeli air strikes in Gaza

0

UN Secretary-General criticizes Israeli strikes in Gaza that caused civilian casualties and demolished building with international media outlets.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Saturday he is “dismayed” by civilian casualties in Gaza and “deeply disturbed” by Israel’s strike on a building containing international media outlets, AFP reports.

The comments came after 10 members of a family were reportedly killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza, and another air strike demolished the 13-floor Gaza building housing Al Jazeera and The Associated Press news agency.

“The Secretary-General is dismayed by the increasing number of civilian casualties, including the death of ten members of the same family, including children, as a result of an Israeli airstrike last night in the al-Shati camp in Gaza, purportedly aimed at a Hamas leader,” Guterres’ spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said, according to AFP.

Guterres was “also deeply disturbed by the destruction by an Israeli airstrike today of a high-rise building in Gaza City that housed the offices of several international media organizations as well as residential apartments,” Dujarric continued.

“The Secretary-General reminds all sides that any indiscriminate targeting of civilian and media structures violates international law and must be avoided at all costs,” he added.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on Sunday to discuss the latest escalation.

Did IDF deception lead to massive aerial assault on Hamas’s ‘Metro’?

0

At midnight, the IDF Spokesperson’s English department tweeted that “IDF air and ground troops are currently attacking in the Gaza Strip.”

At about 9 p.m. on Thursday night, the IDF began assembling ground forces along the Gaza border. Some armored and infantry battalions joined the artillery batteries that had been deployed days earlier to pound Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets.

Earlier in the day, the IDF said that a ground offensive was on the table as a viable option for the continuation of Operation Guardians of the Walls. The IDF was hitting hard at Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad targets from the air, but on the ground they would be expected to cause even more damage albeit with greater risk to the Israeli forces.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made his contribution, saying Thursday that the campaign against Hamas was far from over and that more Israeli action was coming.
At midnight, the IDF Spokesperson’s English department tweeted, “IDF air and ground troops are currently attacking in the Gaza Strip.”

Foreign media jumped at the tweet, interpreting it to mean that Israel was sending ground forces into Gaza, a major escalation in the current operation and a sign that it was far from over.

Websites of media outlets around the world, including the Washington Post and ABC, reported the incursion. “Israeli troops have entered the Gaza Strip as conflict with Palestinians escalates, Israeli military says,” was the tweet put out by the Washington Post.

The problem was that there was no ground invasion.

Yes, the IDF had deployed troops along the border, but they did not cross into Gaza. What did happen was in the air where 160 aircraft had assembled for a massive bombing run over the Gaza Strip. Their target was what the IDF called Hamas’s “Metro”, an underground network of tunnels which Hamas used to store its weapons and to move throughout Gaza hidden from Israeli aircraft.

The “Metro” had been built in the years after the 2014 war in the Gaza Strip, also known in Israel as Operation Protective Edge. It was a network of dozens of kilometers of tunnels that crisscrossed Gaza and provided safety from Israeli aerial incursions.

According to reports, due to the deployment along the border and the news coming out in the foreign media of a ground incursion, Hamas and Islamic Jihad sent their first-line of defense into the tunnels to start taking up positions. These were the anti-tank missile teams and mortar squads meant to strike at incoming Israeli ground forces.

What these Hamas operatives did not know was that there was no ground offensive. Instead, once they were out of the tunnels, they were exposed to Israeli aircraft. Within minutes, the “Metro” attack went ahead. This led to speculation that the tweet about the ground incursion was intentional and made to get Hamas to believe it was safe to enter the tunnels.

How many Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists were killed in the operation? That remains to be seen. IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Hidai Zilberman said on Friday morning that the military was still evaluating the consequences of the operation.

Report: Heavy bombing of Hamas ‘metro’ destroyed miles of tunnels, killed dozens

0

Air force officer: Operations such as this likely ‘make the enemy want
to stop… but we will continue to act for as long as necessary’.

The Israeli Air Force’s massive bombardment of Hamas’s Gaza tunnel network overnight Thursday-Friday destroyed miles of tunnels and killed what the IDF believes to be dozens of Hamas terrorists, in what it hopes will be a decisive phase of the current conflict, an Israeli TV report said late Friday.

“We shut down the Hamas tunnel network,” a military source said.

The bombing was the largest Israeli strike since the outbreak of fighting earlier this week, the IDF said earlier.

The assault was prefaced by a deliberate ruse in which the IDF told the foreign press that Israeli ground forces had entered the Gaza Strip, in order to trick the terror group into sending its operatives into the tunnels — referred to by the IDF as “the metro” — ready to emerge and attack the Israeli troops.

Instead, “the tunnels collapsed on those inside” when the IAF bombed them, the TV report noted.

Some 160 aircraft flying simultaneously conducted the massive attack on the network of tunnels, dug by the Hamas terror group under the northern Gaza Strip, the army said.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, in this air campaign, which lasted nearly 40 minutes, some 450 missiles were dropped on 150 targets in northern Gaza, particularly around the city of Beit Lahiya. In all, 80 tons of explosives were used, the TV report said.

The military said earlier Friday it was still working to determine the extent of the damage caused to the underground infrastructure, which IDF spokesperson Hidai Zilberman told reporters was a “strategic asset” to Hamas, and to ascertain the number of terrorist operatives killed in the strikes.

“Hamas itself may not yet know” how many of its operatives were killed, the TV report said, adding that many Hamas commanders were believed to have been among the gunmen in the tunnels.

Omer Tishler, commander of the IAF’s Nevatim airbase (Channel 12 screenshot)
The commander of the IAF’s Nevatim airbase, Omer Tishler, told Channel 12 that “actions such as this, so damaging to the enemy,” would likely “make the enemy want to stop… but in any case we will continue [to target Hamas] as long as is necessary.”

The tunnels were used by Hamas to fire and store weaponry, including rocket launchers, the TV report said. In an Israeli ground offensive, Hamas fighters emerging from the tunnels would have tried to kill and capture IDF soldiers, as was the case in previous conflicts.

In a statement earlier Friday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted: “I said we would strike Hamas and other terror groups with significant blows, and we are doing so. In the last day we have attacked underground targets. Hamas thought it could hide there, but it cannot.”

Channel 12 called the bombing of the tunnels “the central action” by the Israeli army to date of this week’s conflict, but said the IDF has further such operations ready to carry out if and when necessary.

In addition to the aerial assault, Israeli tanks, artillery cannons and infantrymen on the Gaza border conducted accompanying barrages at Hamas operatives — specifically anti-tank guided missiles and rocket-launching teams — who came out during the assault to conduct attacks on Israeli targets, Zilberman said.

He clarified that the ground troops remained on Israel’s side of the border and did not enter the Gaza Strip, despite earlier claims to the contrary by the IDF, causing incorrect reports of a ground invasion to spread through leading news outlets around the world. The spokesman said the military was investigating what caused the “miscommunication.”

In total, some 500 artillery shells — some flares and some explosives — along with 50 tank shells were fired during this subsequent bombardment.

Zilberman said the operation was the result of large amounts of intelligence and careful planning. The military released video footage (above) showing both its preparations for the attack and some of the strikes themselves on the tunnel network, which the IDF refers to as “the metro.”

The late night bombardment left a trail of damage and sent hundreds of people scrambling for safety in the densely populated Strip.

“As always, the aim is to strike military targets and to minimize collateral damage and civilian casualties,” said Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman. “Unlike our very elaborate efforts to clear civilian areas before we strike high-rise or large buildings inside Gaza, that wasn’t feasible this time.”

In 2014, the tunnel network was described as a threat that necessitated a ground incursion in order to destroy, with dozens of troops killed during the operation, including two soldiers whose bodies are still being held by Hamas.

A spokesman for Hamas’ military wing said the group was not afraid of a ground invasion, which would be a chance “to increase our catch” of Israeli soldiers.

The army continued its bombing campaign on Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad targets in the Strip Friday, targeting rocket production facilities and additional anti-tank guided missile teams.

With friends like these

What should worry Americans should worry American Jews even more. It is impossible to decompartmentalize the destructive ideology of these neo-Marxists, which includes promoting many policies anathema to true Jewish values. Opinion.

Just a few weeks ago, the Biden administration marked its first hundred days. Ditto for Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, who has a new title to go with his new position. It’s one he’s trying hard to promote.

A running advertisement, approved by Schumer and paid for by Friends of Schumer, proudly boasts that, “Without a single Republican vote, Chuck Schumer pushed through the most progressive recovery package in modern history.”

After applauding the passage of the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill, the narrator congratulates Schumer, “Not a bad day’s work for America’s newest Progressive Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.”

So, the highest-ranking Democrat, who once called himself a “law-and-order Democrat” and an “angry centrist”, is now a proud “progressive”. And his crowning achievement thus far is the passage, on strict party lines, of a monumental social welfare bill cloaked in the guise of Covid relief. One, which actually spends less than 9% on actually defeating the virus.

And if Biden’s wish list, as outlined in his address to the recent joint session of Congress, becomes reality, there will be trillions more where that came from.

Schumer hasn’t weathered forty years of politicking without astute instincts that inform him when someone is nipping at his heels. Amidst chatter of a possible primary challenge from AOC, he accelerated his abandonment of previous moderate or liberal ideology even before he ascended the Senate throne.

Successful progressive challengers have taught hard lessons. And threats for 2022 are sprouting up all across the country, prompting Schumer and others to jump on the socialist bandwagon.

Most Democrats are now governing with a neo-Marxist playbook in one hand and an eye
to the polls on the other. For good reason. Freshman progressive Jamaal Bowman, who defeated long-serving Democrat Rep. Eliot Engel in AOC-like fashion, delivered the first progressive rebuttal to Biden’s Congressional speech, praising Biden on economic, racial justice and climate issues but pushing for more.

And at Biden’s hundred-day marker, AOC gushed that he “exceeded expectations that progressives had”.

What should worry Americans should worry American Jews even more. It is impossible to decompartmentalize the destructive ideology of these neo-Marxists, which includes promoting many policies anathema to true Jewish values. The false narrative of intersectionality, the progressive screed of oppressed and oppressors, dominates all ten of the progressives’ ten commandments.

And the threat extends beyond American soil. Just like Democrats play the race card here, they play the same game overseas between Jews and Palestinians on Israeli soil.

As Hamas rockets rain down on Israel and violent Arab rioters attack Jews in cities across the Holy Land, progressive Democrats rush to castigate the Jewish State and demand a halt to its financial aid.

AOC slammed Israel for “inhumane” treatment and “paramilitary violence”. Rep. Ilan Omar dubbed Israel’s defense as “an act of terrorism”. She was joined by Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who demanded that U.S. tax dollars not support Israel’s acts of “apartheid” and “inhumanity”, and by Rep. Andre Carson in accusing Israel of “human rights abuses”. Rep. Ayanna Pressley demanded that “American government $$ should not finance state violence…in Jerusalem”.

And the list goes on…

This same predictable cast of BDS-supporting characters is part of a group that recently co-sponsored a bill to condition U.S. aid to Israel, as introduced by known anti-Israel Rep. Betty McCollum. And they are also part of a group of 25 Democrats that just signed onto a letter pressuring U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to condemn the evictions of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah.

It is a number that is apparently much higher than what sources had been expecting, amidst a growing divide between mainstream and left-wing Democrats.

Such growing influence buttresses statements like that of U.S. State Department Ned Price, who urged Israel to avoid “acts of terrorism” against violent Palestinian perpetrators. It prods the current Biden administration to court Iran, renew payments to the PA and UNWRA in excess of $200 million, appoint anti-Israel cabinet members, rejoin the virulently anti-Israel UN Human Rights Council, etc.

Just look at John Kerry, sitting on Biden’s National Security Council as special presidential envoy for climate, who was outed by Iran’s Foreign Minister Zarif for betraying Israel after allegedly informing Zarif of more than 200 Israeli operations in Syria.

This influence now operates on all political levels. In Schumer’s state of NY, home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, mayoral candidate Andrew Yang issued a strong statement of support for the beleaguered nation, declaring, “I’m standing with the people of Israel.” But after a stinging retort from AOC, who called his statement “utterly shameful”, Yang backtracked and is left tottering in his support instead.

It wasn’t that long ago that Schumer, who used to be fond of calling himself “Shomer Yisrael”, stood up to Obama in opposing the Iran Deal. Now, as the Biden administration falls all over itself trying to lure Iran back to the JCPOA, Schumer is oddly quiet.

For someone famed for hogging the headlines, as he did for years every Sunday, commenting on inane subjects like cheese names, toy boats, and even a honey bee
census, he’s been silent as Israel finds itself in mortal danger.

But Schumer did find himself in the news recently: several Jewish organizations, including Jewish Federations of North America, the OU, Agudath Israel of America and the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, loudly applauded Schumer for his critical share in passing the behemoth Covid legislation. They specifically commended him for including a $2.75 billion allocation for non-public schools and other funding streams for human services.

It is difficult to fault Jewish organizations for wanting their fair share of the pie. Especially
if much needed funds are earmarked for Orthodox day schools, which get short shrift compared to public schools. But with all the pork that went into this pie, there’s something not so kosher about this.

Too much praise was heaped on a man and administration whose policies have the ability and, all-too-often, intent to undermine the quality of Jewish life by calls for bigger government in all aspects of economic, social and cultural policies. Or for undermining Jewish life in the Jewish State.

If Jewish communal leaders are right in thanking politicians for delivering to their constituents, they should also be right in holding them accountable when they don’t. Both on local and national levels.

American Jews must connect the dots between Biden’s overtures to Iran and the Palestinians with over a thousand rockets fired into Israel. And more must be done to prevent the stench of moral decay in radical social agendas from wafting into Jewish communities.

It would be shortsighted at best to applaud proliferate spending that brings America closer to the progressives’ socialist dream, tempting as it might be at difficult financial crossroads.

But it is a Faustian bargain American Jews should beware of entering.

Canadian uni students post TikTok vid encouraging stabbing of Israelis

Video by two Wilfred Laurier students, with 4,000+ views, also burns Israeli flag and compares Israel to toilet paper and vomit.

Dan Verbin, Canada , May 14 , 2021 8:17 PM

Two female students from Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario posted a “horrific” TikTok video which encourages the stabbing of Israelis.

The video by the students form the Canadian university, in which they also burn the Israeli flag and compare Israel to toilet paper and vomit, has been viewed over 4,000 times.

“Wilfrid Laurier University students post horrific TikTok video glorifying stabbing people in Israel, comparing them to toilet paper and garbage”, tweeted the StopAntisemitism.org organization. “This type of incitement for violence & antisemitism must be investigated @LaurierPres – your Jewish students deserve to feel safe at your school.”

The video features two female students dancing to pop music. One of them brandishes a large knife and acts out stabbing someone with it.

The other student holds up a roll of toilet paper with a Star of David drawn on it.

Both students are next seen holding a crudely drawn Israeli flag on a piece of paper which they light on fire.

Above is a graphic of the Israeli flag next to the graphic of a bomb.

In the next scene, one of the students pretends to be vomiting in a trash bag.

“Laurier. You should reply to this publicly. Maybe the premier of Ontario needs to know what the govt is subsidising. @fordnation,” tweeted Yehuda Amzallagh in a reply.

This is antisemitism and racist. Let’s see how officials respond,” commented Jim Ferriter, who also addressed his tweet to the president of the university, @LaurierPres.

After the video was brought to light on Twitter, Wilfred Laurier University responded with a statement. “Wilfrid Laurier University does not condone behaviors that promote hate, induce fear, or threaten people’s safety. We are aware of the reports of a video posted to social media by a student, and we are taking appropriate action.”

Elli Schwarcz – Rut: Passing Through

One of the highlights of Shavuot is the reading of Megilat Rut. The story of Rut and her pursuit of truth is one of timeless inspiration.

Rut was a Moabite princess, but decided to leave behind all of the luxury and prestige in following her mother-in-law Na’ami to Israel. Rut was aware that the path she was choosing would be one of hardship; no longer wealthy, her only connection to the Jews being her poor and traumatized mother-in-law, Rut did not envision an easy life ahead. Nevertheless, recognizing the truth of Hashem and His Torah, she would not be deterred. Desiring to accept all of the mitzvot in which Bne Israel are obligated, Rut converted to Judaism.

She was eventually noticed by the tzaddik Boaz, who married her after being impressed by her humility and modesty. Together they bore Oved, who would have Yishai, whose youngest son would become one of the greatest people in history: David Hamelech- King David.

As important a lesson as this tale is, we need to know why we read it on this particular holiday. What is the connection between Rut and Shavuot?

There are several answers to this question, including to basic explanations.
First, this story took place during the harvest season- Rut was noticed by Boaz as she was picking from those stalks that the Torah allocates to the poor, in Boaz’s field. Being that Shavuot is ‘the time of harvest’, we remind ourselves of Rut most effectively at this time.

Second, David himself was born on Shavuot. As a celebration of his righteousness and our dedication to emulating him, we read the story of his great-grandmother and the events that eventually led to his birth.

While there are still more connections between Rut and Shavuot, let’s focus on a fundamental lesson that should give us a deeper appreciation of the holiday and of our service of God.

Rabbi Tzvi Einstadter of Baltimore once explained that Rut’s story reminds us of how temporary our time in this world is. Just as a ger, a convert, can leave everything behind in seeking to join Bne Israel, so are we all expected to ignore distractions and to focus on serving God. A ger dedicates himself of herself to the truth, despite the material sacrifices that could be involved in the process. The ger may initially lose social connections or have difficulty at first in adjusting to Torah and to Jewish culture. Despite these and other possible difficulties, the ger focuses on a goal of spiritual elevation- and everything else becomes secondary. While one born a Jew often does not have to undergo changes or adjustments of such a nature, he is still obligated to live life in this way. Rather than thinking that he has a lot of time in which to improve himself and to accomplish his unfulfilled goals, a person must constantly remind himself  that this physical world is the only venue for building a spiritual portfolio, and that life passes by very quickly.

A famous story illustrates this point. The Gaon of Vilna, a towering tzaddik, was on his deathbed. Suddenly, he began to cry- and the students around him were stunned. How could such a great man be crying? Was he scared of death? Could he really feel so attached to this false world?

The Gaon explained as he lifted up his tzitzit: “In this world, one can acquire eternity for just a few kopeks- but in the Next World, all the money in existence will not help!”

Despite- actually, because of- his tremendous stature, the Gaon keenly felt this powerful truth. This is the place and the time for accomplishment, and we must never forget this.

Another story drives home the idea:

The well-known Jewish American philanthropist, Mrs. Golding, visited the holy Chafetz Chaim. She was shocked to see the poor conditions in which this great man lived- he didn’t even have a table, but rather a crate placed atop two supports. Instantly she expressed surprise and offered to buy whatever he needed.

The Chafetz Chaim responded with a question: “Where is your furniture?”

She answered in bewilderment: “What do you mean? I am just passing through here!”

The Chafetz Chaim then made his point:’Listen to what you just said- you are just passing through, and so there is no need for having furniture here. Know that I am also passing through- I am passing through this world, and so there is no need for me to buy furniture either!’

We return to Rabbi Einstadter’s lesson: we must take inspiration from the special commitment of Rut, and really from all converts. We must all feel the urgency of the moment, and we must all believe that we are just ‘passing through’. Only by so doing can we properly approach Shavuot, as this holiday celebrates and relives Matan Torah, the Giving of the Torah at Sinai. This, then, is why we read Rut’s story on Shavuot.

May we take this lesson to heart, remembering Rut’s sacrifice, learning from the ger‘s noble spirit, and remind ourselves of the importance of each moment- as we strive for spiritual elevation.

Have a great Shabbat and Yom Tov!

Statement by PM Netanyahu – May 13, 2021

0

(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, tonight (Thursday, 13 May 2021):

“Citizens of Israel, we are dealing with a campaign on two fronts. The first front – Gaza. I said that we would exact a very heavy price from Hamas and the other terrorist organizations. We are doing so and we will continue to do so with great force. The last word has not been said and this operation will continue as long as necessary in order to restore the quiet and security to the State of Israel.

The second front – Israel’s cities. I repeat what I said earlier today: We give 100% backing to the police, to the soldiers of the Border Police and to the other security forces in order to restore law and order to Israel’s cities. We will not tolerate anarchy. We back the police in using all means with full powers, including in conjunction with the IDF and the ISA. We have given powers for an emergency situation here. All of these measures are important, legitimate and necessary in order to halt this lawlessness in the State of Israel.

I again call on the citizens of Israel not to take the law into their own hands; whoever does so will be punished severely.

I would like to participate in the sorrow of the families that have lost their dear ones – the families of five-year-old Ido Avigal and the soldier Omer Tabib and five other families of five citizens who unfortunately lost their lives.

We will act with full force against enemies from without and law-breakers from within in order to restore quiet to the State of Israel.”
