Opinion: Et tu, Ahmad – The illusion of Arab loyalty

The riots, the ambushes, the stoning and near lynching of Jews by Arabs provided a rude awaking from the nascent illusion of increasingly “harmonious coexistence”.

“A person who, with intent to assist an enemy in war against Israel, commits an act calculated to assist [that enemy] is liable to the death penalty or to imprisonment for life.”—Clause 99(a), Israel’s Penal Code, on treason.

I admit. I was totally mistaken.

Although I have long been skeptical as to the much-vaunted “loyalty” of Israel’s Arab citizens to the Jewish state, believing that, by and large, they harbored a latent yet smoldering disloyalty that one day would erupt, I recently have been on the cusp of changing my mind.

Misplaced optimism

I began to believe that a certain awareness of the tremendous advantages they enjoyed living in Israel, rather than in one of the neighboring countries, was beginning to percolate into their collective consciousness.

There seemed to be growing signs of this, both in the sphere of my own personal experience, where I have day-to-day interaction with Arab Israelis, and in the sphere of the public discourse, where the term “the growing Israelization of Arab-Israelis” became an increasingly common term in the media coverage of the Arab sector in the country.

I live between two Arab villages, one relatively prosperous, the other not so much. Residents of both village, with whom I converse frequently, work in my community.

In the nearby shopping mall, much of both the staff, who are efficient and polite, and the clientele, are from Arab villages in the area. In my contacts with my Arab neighbors, I got the impression that they were undergoing a growing integration into Israeli society, which I seem to have mistaken for a growing identification with Israeli society.

Perhaps what was misleading is that today, in many ways, Arab Israelis look more like Jewish Israelis — except, of course, for those (Arabs or Jews) who don religious attire (Islamic or ultra-Orthodox). Their meticulous personal grooming, the brands of their clothing, their choice of footwear, the cars they drive, their leisure activity all created a false sense of similarity and diminishing differences between “them” and “us.”

A rude awakening

However, the riots, the ambushes, the stoning and near lynching of Jews by Arabs provided a rude awaking from the nascent illusion of increasingly harmonious coexistence — as did the ransacking and torching of a synagogue!

Indeed, it was mayhem not born of socioeconomic grievances, but of inimical ethno-nationalistic affiliation with Israel’s foes, bent on eradicating it as a Jewish nation-state.

It was not socioeconomic despair that drove the Arab mobs to tear down the Israeli flag and replace it with that of the enemy, under whom their socioeconomic plight would be considerably worse — by orders of magnitude.

Thus the socioeconomic predicament of Arab-Israeli society is a poor explanation for the widespread violence that pervades it. After all, the Jewish ultra-Orthodox society is also afflicted with a similarly low socioeconomic status. Both occupy the bottom rungs of the socioeconomic ladder in Israel.

However, in both societies, it is their own cultural mores — large families, a single breadwinner — rather than systematic discrimination that accounts for much of the depressed economic levels in both societies.

Yet, among the ultra-Orthodox, one does not encounter anything approaching the intra-communal violence or the amassing of deadly weapons that one finds among Arab Israelis.

Accordingly, if socioeconomic conditions in the ultra-Orthodox community are not caused by structural bias against it, nor have they produced the same rampant crime, why should this be assumed to be the case among the Arab Israelis?

Perfidy paraded?

Over time, there have been repeated examples of the reticence — indeed refusal — of Arab citizens of Israel, no matter how preeminent their standing in society, to accept — never mind respect — the symbols of Jewish sovereignty.

Thus, an Arab Supreme Court justice refused to sing the national anthem at official events, claiming that the words, underscoring the Jewish nature of the state, were inappropriate for an Arab citizen. Recently, at the swearing-in of the current Knesset, several Arab members made a show of the difficulty they have in pledging their allegiance to Israel and to its laws.

In recent years, one Arab Knesset member after another has been more than brazen in expressing overt identification with a chilling range of Israel’s enemies — from Assad’s regime in Syria through the Hezbollah in Lebanon to the terror organizations in Gaza and Judea-Samaria — with one being imprisoned for aiding and abetting convicted terrorists, and another being forced to flee the country for aiding Hezbollah in times of war.

Murderous “martyrs”

Such display of alienation — indeed, aversion — to their own state is not confined to select elites within Arab-Israeli society. When Arab Israelis perpetrated lethal acts of terror, they were feted as heroes by their kinfolk, who collaborated in hiding them from Israeli authorities.

When two of them were eventually located and killed, they were given huge funerals, where they were enthusiastically eulogized by approving mass processions — and lauded as “martyrs for Al-Aqsa” for gunning down two Israeli policemen (from the Druze community) at the Temple Mount.

The unavoidable conclusion from this dismal record is that Israel has been enormously — and ill-advisedly — tolerant its Arab citizens, allowing blatant and barefaced displays not only of disloyalty but of equally brazen identification with Israel’s enemies — even in times of ongoing hostilities.

Seen in this context, the current revolt is clearly aimed at changing the very essence of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people, annulling the very foundation for its establishment and transforming the rationale for its continued existence.

Accordingly, the situation can no longer be seen as one centering on the question of individual rights, but of collective survival — and it must be treated as such.

It cannot, and must not, be sugarcoated.

Time for a sea change

The well-known dictum that “Democracy is not a suicide pact” may not be new, but it was never more apt than it is for Israel today.

No democracy can survive a situation in which an entire sector of the population not only rejects the basis for its inception and existence, but significant segments thereof embrace those seeking its destruction. To wit: almost the entire Arab electorate voted for parties that overtly reject Israel as a Jewish state — with many of its elected leaders cavorting with vehemently inimical regimes.

It is time for an abrupt sea change. It is time to apply the full weight of existing Israeli law against recalcitrant citizens who choose to collaborate with the country’s foes and imperil the national security of the state and the personal safety of its people.

The existing penal code in Israel prescribes the most severe penalties for the actions that are being openly committed by thousands of Israel’s Arab citizens. (See introductory excerpt.)

And while many may balk at the prospect of wholesale executions and life-long imprisonment as current law prescribes, there should be scant inhibition for the imposition of lesser punishment — such as stripping rebellious Arab Israelis of the citizenship they do not respect, or deporting them from a country with which they do not identify — preferably to one of the “egalitarian” and “non-discriminatory” states in the immediate region.

Any perception of wavering or weakness will be interpreted as a license for further turmoil.

One thing is beyond doubt: If the Jews do not arise and exert their sovereignty over their land, they will lose both their sovereignty and their land.

The reported incident comes after footage of another incident emerged on social media reportedly showing Arabs violently attacking Jews at a restaurant in Los Angeles.

The violent attack took place on La Cienega and Beverly, known as a heavily Jewish area of the city.

A victim from that incident was reported to be hospitalized.

Netanyahu to ambassadors: ‘We target our enemies with great precision’

0

The Israeli prime minister said “there is no army in the world that does more than the Israeli army, in the Israeli security services, in Israeli intelligence to prevent collateral damage.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized to foreign diplomats that the Israel Defense Forces go to great lengths to target its enemies with great precision and to avoid collateral damage.

Speaking to more than 70 diplomatic representatives from several countries, including the United States, the European Union, Russia, China, India, Germany, Austria, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Canada and Italy, the Israeli leader said that Hamas “indiscriminately targets everyone.”

“They murder everyone—any civilian they can get their hands on. They use civilians. They target civilians while hiding behind civilians using them as human shields. This is the problem that we face.”

Netanyahu went on to say that “there is no army in the world that does more than the Israeli army, in the Israeli security services, in Israeli intelligence to prevent collateral damage,” and called criticism of its use of force in the Gaza Strip as “absurd.”

“Instead of having the perpetrators who commit double war crimes, who are hiding behind civilians and firing on civilians, not having them criticized but having you criticized is the height of hypocrisy and stupidity. What that does is in fact encourage the terrorists. It gives support—it gives encouragement to the terrorists—and that is something that is bad for each one of us.”

Netanyahu noted that three foreigners in Israel—two agricultural workers from Thailand and one Indian caregiver—have died as a result of rocket attacks on Israel.

During the briefing, the prime minister also presented the ambassadors with documentation of IDF attacks in the Gaza Strip against Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, as well as the location of stockpiles of missiles, rockets, terrorist buildings, command centers and numerous terrorist infrastructures.

Also presented were videos of rockets being fired at citizens of the State of Israel and misfiring by the terrorist organizations, which endangers the residents of the Gaza Strip. Israeli ambassadors around the world also participated in the briefing via Zoom.

“I’m not shy about saying it openly,” said Netanyahu. “I think you should support Israel strongly because this is not merely a question of Israel’s security; it’s a question of our common security and our common interests in the Middle East.”

Blinken backtracks: ‘Israel gave US info on AP building bombing’

0
“We’ve received some further information through intelligence channels,” said Blinken.

By Lauren Marcus, World Israel News

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that Israel had turned over information to the U.S. government justifying the airstrike on the Al-Jalaa Tower in Gaza City, where the Associated Press and Al Jazeera news agencies had offices.

The leveling of the building last Saturday sparked backlash among the foreign press, with AP’s executive director calling for a third-party investigation into the decision.

The Israeli military maintains that the building was used by Hamas terrorists as an operational base.

At a press conference in Reykjavik, Iceland, Blinken said that Israel had provided the U.S. with proof that the building was compromised by terrorist activity.

“We did seek further information from Israel on this question,” he said. “It’s my understanding that we’ve received some further information through intelligence channels, and it’s not something I can comment on.”

Blinken’s most recent comments were a departure from his statements he made about the strike on Monday.

During a press conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, Blinken said the U.S. had been concerned over the strike and had requested proof from the Israeli military that the building had been utilized by Hamas.

“Shortly after the strike we did request additional details regarding the justification for it,” Blinken said.

When asked whether or not the U.S. government has received sufficient information from Israel, Blinken demurred and said he “will leave it to others to characterize if any information has been shared and our assessment [of] that information.”

Blinken added that he personally had “not seen any information provided” on the matter.

IDF spokesman Brig.-Gen. Hidai Zilberman told Army Radio on Tuesday that the operatives in the Al-Jalaa Tower had used the building as a base to plan and execute rocket attacks against Israeli communities bordering Gaza.

“These are people tasked with collecting information about IDF combat troops and the southern [Israeli] communities, in order to carry out all the attacks,” Zilberman said.

“These are the people who directed the terrorist attacks on the communities of the Gaza periphery.”

Antisemitic Lies by Israelophobic Congressmembers Help Fuel Arab Rocket Attacks & Pogroms Against Jews

0

Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) President Morton Klein and ZOA Chair Mark Levenson, Esq. released the following statement:

The ZOA strongly condemns Senators Bernie Sanders (Socialist-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Chris Coons (D-DE), Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and the Israel-hating Jew-hating Squad including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), AOC (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Cori Bush (D-MO), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and others in the House of Representatives for making false and dangerous antisemitic statements that are helping to fuel and embolden Arab terrorists’ violent attacks, pogroms, and rocket attacks on innocent Jews and Jewish holy places and properties.

These lawmakers are making absurd, reckless, antisemitic demands that Jewish property rights to Jewish-owned homes in the Shimon HaTzadik/Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, and that Israeli law and Israeli courts are “abhorrent” and must be ignored and trampled on. These lawmakers are also falsely blaming Jews and wrongly attempting to stop Israel’s efforts to defend the Jewish people from more Hamas rocket attacks and other Arab terror attacks against Jews throughout the land of Israel.

For instance, Senator Elizabeth Warren falsely, outrageously tweeted that: “The forced removal of long-time Palestinian residents in Sheikh Jarrah is abhorrent and unacceptable. The Administration should make clear to the Israeli government that these evictions are illegal and must stop immediately.” Similarly, Bernie Sanders falsely and offensively demanded: “The United States must speak out strongly against the violence by government-allied Israeli extremists in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and make clear that the evictions of Palestinian families must not go forward.”

These Senators’ statements ignore that the respected liberal Israeli courts have ruled that the Arabs to be evicted are a few squatters and tenants who refused to pay rent for decades, while living in homes and land legally owned by Jews and since the 1800s in the Shimon HaTzadik neighborhood of Jerusalem (which the Arabs call “Sheikh Jarrah” to de-Judaize it). If a Jewish tenant was evicted for failing to pay rent to an Arab homeowner, no one would say a word.

In fact, in any democracy in the world, including Sanders’ and Warrens’ own U.S.A., people who refuse to pay rent are lawfully evicted every day – and no one claims that this is “abhorrent” or a violation of international law. The real “abhorrent” matter is to twist lawful evictions of a few non-paying tenants into a pretext to foment deadly Hamas missiles, antisemitic riots, synagogue burnings, Yeshiva burnings, and of attacking Jews in the Jewish homeland.

ZOA urges these Senators to watch an informative video tweeted by journalist, entitled “What’s really happening at #SheikhJarrah?” Ms. Schrader implored:  “The members of US Congress condemning #Israel over this are acting irresponsibly. As an American Israeli I’m asking them to STOP fanning the flames of antisemitism and incitement to violence.”

Senator Chris Coons also falsely tweeted that “evictions in East Jerusalem, settlement expansion, and home demolitions [are] unilateral actions that place a two-state solution further out of reach.” In other words, Coons is claiming that finally trying to enforce Jewish property rights of Jewish homeowners, and Jews building an extra nursery in their own homes in the Jewish homeland, are impediments to “peace” with Arabs who have refused to negotiate, turned down over-generous peace offers for a state multiple times, and repeatedly demonstrated, in word and deed – especially this past week – that their goal is to murder Jews and destroy Israel.

Senator Coons and others also insultingly called on “all parties to exercise restraint” – which absurdly equates protecting innocent Israelis, on the one hand, to the terrorist organization Hamas, and to the Palestinian Authority (which is paying and inciting Arabs to attack Jews), and to the Arab citizens of Israel who are assaulting and grievously injuring their Jewish neighbors.

Senator Murphy tweeted one-sided concern about a possible ground invasion of Gaza may take Arab civilian lives, and demanded a ceasefire before Israel can destroy Hamas’ rockets. What about the Jewish men, women and children who are being subjected to 3500 of Hamas rockets against civilian sites. Aren’t the Jewish victims of Hamas terror rockets, and standing with Israeli effort to defeat Hamas, deserving of the Senator’s concern?

It is also appalling that Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) blamed Israeli efforts to stop the violent pogroms and attacks against innocent Israelis. Nadler stated: -“I remain deeply concerned by the violence in Jerusalem, including Israeli police violence, and I urge all parties to exercise restraint.”

Seriously? Does Nadler seriously believe that Israel should “exercise restraint” instead of protecting innocent Jews from knife-wielding Arab mobs who are breaking into Jewish homes to attack Jews, burning down Jewish schools and synagogues, shooting Israelis walking on the street, and raining thousands of rockets on all of Israel?

Does Nadler seriously believe that Israeli authorities should do nothing when Arab terrorists stockpile rocks and weapons on the Temple Mount, and use those weapons against Jews praying in Jerusalem?

ACTION ALERT:  Please call the above Congresspersons to demand that they retract their harmful anti-Israel statements. The Senate telephone list is here. The House of Representatives telephone list is here

The vicious anti-Israel, antisemitic bile spewed by the squad, and “BDS Betty” McCollum’s vile blood libel-filled antisemitic bill to try to restrict aid to Israel are adding more fuel to the fire.

As Senator Ted Cruz explained so well: “It’s the angry socialist left — AOC and Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar—who are tweeting things that frankly are indistinguishable from what they’d be saying if they were actually the press secretaries for Hamas. You’ve got Omar who is accusing Israel of carrying out acts of terrorism. There is a fundamental difference between a nation defending itself against terrorists and terrorists targeting women and children, which is what Hamas is doing.”

ZOA demands public retractions from all of those who are inciting antisemitic hatred and blaming Israel for defending herself from Arab pogroms and rockets.

ZOA also thanks Senator Ted Cruz and many others in the Senate and the House who have shown that they are real friends by standing up for Israel at this dangerous time when the Jewish people in Israel are being engulfed by the most dangerous antisemitic attacks.

ZOA especially appreciates the 44 Republican Senators who signed a letter to President Biden initiated by Senator Marco Rubio, condemning the Arab terrorists who are launched over a thousand (it’s now up to 3,000) rockets “targeting Israeli civilians and cities, including Israel’s capital Jerusalem.”

Importantly, in recognition of the Iranian regime’s role in supplying Hamas with rockets and rocket-manufacturing capacity, the 44 pro-Israel Senators’ letter sensibly insisted that the U.S. must end negotiations with Iran, and that “the United States “must not do anything to enrich Israel’s enemies, such as by offering sanctions relief to a regime that seeks to destroy Israel. As a longtime friend of the Jewish state, we also urge you to unequivocally support Israel’s right to defend itself against any and all terrorist attacks.”

The 44 pro-Israel Senators who signed this letter were: James Risch, James Inhofe, Pat Toomey, Todd Young, Tom Cotton, Chuck Grassley, Thom Tillis, James Lankford, Steve Daines, John Barrasso, Ron Johnson, Rick Scott, Josh Hawley, Michael Rounds, Dan Sullivan, Cindy Hyde-Smith, Mike Crapo, Roger Marshall, Marsha Blackburn, Mitt Romney, Mike Braun, Deb Fischer, Joni Ernst, Cynthia Lummis, Ben Sasse, John Thune, Tim Scott, Roger Wicker, John Boozman, Kevin Cramer, Bill Hagerty, Ted Cruz, John Hoeven, John Kennedy, Shelley Moore Capito, Michael Lee, Richard Burr, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Tommy Tuberville, John Cornyn, Lisa Murkowski, and Rob Portman.  ACTION ALERT:  Please join us in calling these 44 pro-Israel Senators to thank them.   Please also urge more Senators to sign on to this letter.  (The Senate telephone list is here.)

Phyllis Shallman – Bad Financial Habits and How to Overcome Them

Read on if you ever find yourself struggling to stay afloat financially.

Do you ever feel like no matter how much money you make, it never seems like enough? You’re not alone. A recent survey found that more than half of middle-income families didn’t have three months of expenses saved.¹ Debt and spending can be out of control for many reasons—the economy, our upbringing, or even because we’re hardwired to want more. This article explores three bad habits that may be hurting your financial situation. You might be surprised by what they are!

Treating credit cards like free money. When you’re tempted to buy something and don’t have the cash, it’s easy to just use credit. But instant gratification can have serious consequences. Little by little, you may find yourself racking up more and more debt. Paying your monthly credit card bill can start requiring all of your cash flow… and maybe more. Yikes.

The solution? Limit your credit card usage as much as possible. Make a habit of only using your credit card for certain low-dollar items, like gas. If you can’t buy your impulse purchase in cash, go home!

Trying to buy happiness. It’s tempting to think that you’re going to be happy if you buy one thing or another. But what happens when the newness wears off? Suddenly, you have a closet full of clothes and shoes that really aren’t making you any happier! The same is true of houses, cars, gadgets, anything you can think of. Buying things to keep up appearances or just because you think they’ll make you fulfilled is a recipe for overspending on things that, ultimately, don’t matter.

The key is to find happiness beyond your material possessions. That’s no small task, and there’s no set road map for it. But it’s absolutely critical to find a source of meaning that isn’t tied to stuff and things. You could be happier—and more financially stable—for it.

Ignoring your financial situation. Let’s face it—finances can be scary! Overwhelming debt, paying for college, and feeling out of your depth are uncomfortable emotions. And ignoring and denying uncomfortable feelings is often a first line of defense.

But it’s a dangerous game. Ignoring what the numbers tell you can lead you deeper and deeper into financial instability. You could be setting up a much harder path for yourself in the future than if you tackled your financial situation now.

Tackling your financial fears isn’t always easy. It might require serious soul searching. Just know these three things…

Acknowledging the problem is the first step. Once you can admit that your finances need help, you’re ready to start making positive changes.

Seeking help is always wise. Whether it’s a friend, spouse, qualified counselor, or financial professional, enlisting help can give you the courage you need to face your fears.

You can do this! It might not feel like it, but you have what it takes to confront this challenge… and win! Don’t lose hope, and start moving forward.

Managing your money wisely requires more than knowing different techniques and strategies. It takes maturity. The more you invest in making improvements to your life overall, the better emotionally equipped you’ll be to navigate the world of personal finances.

President Rivlin Remarks

0

President Rivlin spoke just now on the IDF communications network, conveying the wishes of the Israeli people to all IDF soldiers standing guard on land, sea and air during a visit to an Iron Dome battery.

President Rivlin:

“Today, you won’t be sitting around the holiday table with your families, but the whole Israeli people is with you. You make it possible for us, all of us, to enjoy a happier, safer holiday. Take care of yourselves, my dears, and take care of us. We trust you. Thank you, guardians of our walls!”

President Rivlin to the men and women of Iron Dome:

“The Iron Dome battery for which you are responsible, this Israeli development, is testimony to the IDF and security establishment’s commitment to protecting Israel’s citizens.”

President Rivlin spoke just now, Sunday 16 May 2021 / 5 Sivan 5781, on the IDF communications network, speaking to the IDF General Staff’s command center and conveying the wishes of the Israeli people to all IDF soldiers standing guard on land, sea and air.

“Our wonderful soldiers, men and women, this is Kodkod (commander) Ruvi,” said the president. “No words can express the appreciation and love we have for you. Today, you won’t be sitting around the holiday table with your families, but the whole Israeli people is with you. You make it possible for us, all of us, to enjoy a happier, safer holiday. Through you, I would like to thank all IDF soldiers and security forces. You are our light, you are our pride, you are in our hearts at every moment. On behalf of the entire Israeli people, I would like to say thank you. Take care of yourselves, my dears, and take care of us. We trust you.”

Col. Moran Omer, commander of the operations unit in the command center at the Kirya General Staff HQ base, via which the president’s message went out to the IDF’s command posts, thanked the president and said, “Thank you, Mr. President, for your warm words. We see protecting and defending Israel as a great privilege during this complex time and take this opportunity to wish you and all Israel a happy Shavuot holiday, as much quiet as possible. Again, thank you for the time and the opportunity for us to hear you.”

The president made his remarks during a visit to an Iron Dome battery, escorted by the commander of aerial defense Brig.-Gen. Gilad Biran and commander of Battalion 947 Lt.-Col. Yehonatan Shabatai, who briefed the president on the sector and on the Iron Dome batteries deployed around the country.

The president then thanked the men and women of the battery he visited, saying “I came here and see that the guardian of Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers. You are the guardians of our walls. I saw the professionalism with which you are running this campaign, and I am proud of you. All of Israel trusts you.”

The president brought a cheesecake with him for the soldiers, as Nechama ?”? used to do with soldiers and said, “I came here ahead of Shavuot because I knew you wouldn’t be home and that your parents will be missing you. Many of them are involved themselves, as the home front has become the front-line. You are the irrefutable answer that home front that has become the front-line can live safely and know that they are being protected. Chag Sameach, my dears, to you and your families, on behalf of all citizens. Thank you! Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Nechama, my wife of blessed memory, would go between security forces who had stayed back to guard us on holiday and give them a slice of her famous cheesecake. And I’m here to carry on her tradition.”

9 Tips for Your Second Shavuot at Home

By Menachem Posner

As we approach Shavuot, it’s hard to believe that some of us will be celebrating this holiday alone yet again. We made it through Passover, and we’ve made it through Lag BaOmer … but Shavuot?

Shavuot, the holiday of burning the midnight oil with a dedicated crew of fellow scholars, of gathering in the synagogue with family and friends to hear the Ten Commandments, of children showing off their summer outfits, of chatting with acquaintances over cheesecake and coffee… Oh, Shavuot, how can we ever celebrate you alone once more?

Well, if G?d put us in a situation where we must celebrate Shavuot alone, then we most certainly can. Here are our tips for a Shavuot that is both delightful to the soul and pleasant for the person.

1. Decorate the House

As we celebrate at home, it is especially important to make our environment feel as celebratory as possible. Did you know studies have shown that flowers improve your emotional health? Many follow the custom of sprucing up their synagogues and homes with greenery and flowers (read the reason for this, as well as why it is not a Chabad custom), but there is more you can do. Let your crafty side reign free. Create Mount Sinai posters, Torah motifs, and other art to give your home a festive, Shavuot vibe.

2. Cook Up Dairy Delights

A favorite Shavuot custom is enjoying dairy treats, which run the gamut from traditional blintzes to Italian creations with names that are difficult to spell and almost impossible to pronounce. If shopping is difficult, even humble classics like mac and cheese (cooked over a pre-existing flame) or a comforting coffee can do the trick.

Take a Look at Our Shavuot Recipe Offerings

3. Print Up Study Material for Your All-Nighter

It is customary to stay up the entire first night of Shavuot, reading a syllabus of classic Torah texts, known as Tikkun (“fixing”), until just before dawn. Those unable to read Tikkun often study with friends, join classes, or learn on their own. Calculate how many hours you will have from when you conclude your holiday meal until dawn, and make sure you have enough study material to carry you through.

4. Light Holiday Candles

Shavuot is a holiday, and it is ushered in by lighting candles (married women light at least two, and single girls light one). If you are sheltering in place in a male-only household, one of the guys should light candles for everyone. (Note that on the second night the candles must be lit after nightfall from a preexisting flame.)

5. Hold Your Own Services

With the exception of Kaddish, the Barechu call to prayer, the repetition of the Amidah, and the Torah reading, you can pray anywhere in the world, including your home.

So make sure you have a siddur handy (Shavuot services are all in the standard Chabad Siddur) and a place set aside to serve as your ad hoc shul. If you are with others, pray together. Even though you don’t make a minyan, you can say the words and sing the songs together.

Get Familiar With the Order of the Prayers

6. Read the Ten Commandments

When the Ten Commandments were communicated on the very first Shavuot in history, all Jewish souls (including yours and mine) were present. The Rebbe—Rabbi Menachem M. Schneersohn, of righteous memory—encouraged every living Jew, from newborns to nonagenarians and beyond, to be present during services on the first morning of Shavuot, when we relive the experience by reading the record of the event from the Torah scroll.

If you are unable to attend synagoge, read the entire Torah portion (Exodus 19:1-20:23 on the first day and Deuteronomy 14:22-16:17 on the second day, followed by Numbers 28:26-31) from a printed Chumash. You are certainly encouraged to read the Ten Commandments aloud in Hebrew or English while everyone stands by respectfully.

7. Prepare Games and Fun for Kids

Synagogues typically prepare a full program for children, making the Ten Commandments meaningful, fun, and memorable. We can do the same at home. Click the link below to access games, a craft, and a fun treat—all of which can be prepared with minimal effort before the onset of the holiday.

8. Don’t Forget Yizkor

The second day of Shavuot is one of four annual times the Yizkor memorial prayer for our dear departed ones is recited in the synagogue. Those still unable to venture out will recite Yizkor privately at home, secure in the fact that this is what G?d wants from us right now, taking comfort in knowing that our loved ones would surely want us to stay safe.

9. Tell Stories About the Baal Shem Tov

Shavuot is the yahrzeit of both King David and the Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Chassidic movement. Many make it a point to tell stories about the Baal Shem Tov over the holiday.

‘Queen’s Speech’ outlines measures to halt UK officials from implementing BDS

0

The announcement is tied to legislation “ … to stop public bodies from imposing their own approach or views about international relations, through preventing boycott, divestment or sanctions campaigns against foreign countries.”

Queen Elizabeth II has tasked the government of the United Kingdom with stopping local councils from implementing BDS activity against Israel and Jewish companies.

Though BDS is not specifically mentioned in her “Queen’s Speech” before the House of Lords on May 11 to open a new session of Parliament, she said that “measures will be introduced that support for businesses reflects the United Kingdom’s strategic interests and drives economic growth.”

According to a memorandum from the Office of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the queen’s announcement is tied to legislation “ … to stop public bodies from imposing their own approach or views about international relations, through preventing boycott, divestment or sanctions campaigns against foreign countries.”

The legislation would, in part, prevent public institutions from carrying out boycotts, divestments and sanctions against foreign countries, or those linked to them, in addition to the sale of goods and services from foreign countries.

The Jewish Human Rights Watch group in England praised the move, saying it was “delighted to hear Her Majesty the Queen propose a ban on public sector Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) … .” The group noted that several local councils who had chosen such measures were taken to court to “highlight the injustice of the practice.”

Manny Weiss, the founder of Jewish Human Rights Watch, told JNS “it was our intention to make the practice of discrimination and prejudice against British Jews and Israel as unpalatable and unacceptable as it should be. We are delighted that Her Majesty’s Bill will ensure that councils can no longer discriminate in this way, and protection of free trade is assured.”

In introducing the legislative agenda, the prime minister’s office noted: “Unofficial boycotts have been associated with anti-Semitism in the United Kingdom, including kosher food being removed from supermarket shelves, Jewish films being banned from a film festival, and a student union holding a vote on blocking the formation of a Jewish student society.”
