Report: IDF Air Strikes in Syria

0

IAF attacks Syrian army targets in response to attempted attack that was thwarted on the border with Israel.

IAF fighter jets and combat helicopters attacked Syrian army targets in southern Syria on Monday evening, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit confirmed.

The air strike was in retaliation for the attempt to place explosives along the Syrian border which was thwarted in the southern Golan Heights on Sunday night.

The targets attacked include observation posts and means of gathering intelligence, anti-aircraft cannons and command and control centers at Syrian army bases.

“The IDF considers the Syrian regime responsible for any action taken in its territory, and will continue to act resolutely against any violation of the sovereignty of the State of Israel,” said the statement.

Earlier, Syrian media outlets reported that the Syrian army’s air defense systems were activated following an air strike. Preliminary reports indicated that the air strike targeted Iranian militia bases in eastern Syria.

The official Syrian news agency said, “Our air defense systems have been activated against hostile targets over southwestern Damascus.”

On Sunday night, IDF forces eliminated four terrorists who attempted to place explosives on the Israeli-Syrian border.

A special force from the Maglan Unit operating in the southern Golan Heights area, near a military post, identified a squad of several terrorists placing explosives near the border fence.

IDF fighters and IDF aircraft fired at the squad that numbered four terrorists and hit them. There were no casualties among the Israeli forces.

“Northern Command forces are on high alert and prepared for any scenario. The IDF considers the Syrian regime responsible for any action takin place in its territory and will not allow any violation of the sovereignty of the State of Israel,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit stressed.

UN report: North Korea pressing on with its nuclear program

0

North Korea is pressing on with its nuclear weapons program and several countries believe it has “probably developed miniaturized nuclear devices to fit into the warheads of its ballistic missiles,” according to a confidential UN report seen by the Reuters news
agency on Monday.

The report by an independent panel of experts monitoring UN sanctions said the countries, which it did not identify, believed North Korea’s past six nuclear tests had likely helped it develop miniaturized nuclear devices. Pyongyang has not conducted a nuclear test since September 2017.

The interim report was submitted to the 15-member UN Security Council North Korea sanctions committee on Monday, according to Reuters.

“The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is continuing its nuclear program, including the production of highly enriched uranium and construction of an experimental light water reactor. A Member State assessed that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is continuing production of nuclear weapons,” the report said.

North Korea’s mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the UN report.

The report comes days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said there would be no more war as the country’s nuclear weapons guarantee its safety and future.

The UN report said one country, which it did not identify, assessed that North Korea “may seek to further develop miniaturization in order to allow incorporation of technological improvements such as penetration aid packages or, potentially, to develop multiple warhead systems.”

Talks between the US and North Korea aimed at dismantling North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs in exchange for sanctions relief have stalled in the past year.

Kim and US President Donald Trump met in Hanoi last year for a summit that left nuclear talks at a standstill. The pair had met three times since June 2018 but made little progress towards denuclearization.

Since those talks broke down, North Korea has conducted several ballistic missile tests.

Kim’s sister recently said another summit with the United States would only be useful for Washington at this point, but added that her country had no intention of “threatening the US”.

The UN experts said North Korea is violating sanctions, including “through illicit maritime exports of coal, though it suspended these temporarily between late January and early March 2020” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

IDF finds gun, more explosives left behind by would-be attackers on Syria border

0

Senior military officers meet UN officials at site of foiled attack in Golan Heights, say Syria will be held accountable for violence.

The Israel Defense Forces on Monday said that following last night’s security incident along the Syrian border — which saw the army kill four armed men who crossed the border and planted bombs — troops scanned the area and found a gun, as well as a backpack with several more bombs ready for use.

The items were found inside Israel, 25 meters from the border, the army said.

The army said military officers met with UNDOF’s Maj. Gen. Ishwar Hamal in the afternoon to show the UN peacekeepers the scene of the incident.

“At the meeting, the division commander emphasized that the IDF would not allow the security of the residents of the State of Israel and its sovereignty to be harmed, and that the IDF considers the State of Syria responsible for everything that happens on its territory,” the army said in a statement.

During the Sunday night incident, four people crossed into Israeli territory and planted improvised explosive devices inside an unmanned Israel Defense Forces outpost along the Syrian border, the military said earlier Monday.

Soldiers from the Maglan special forces unit and unspecified aircraft opened fire at the four suspects, some of whom were armed, killing them all, IDF Spokesperson Hidai Zilberman told reporters Monday morning. The army also released video of the incident, showing figures approaching a fence near the border and being hit with a missile.

No Israeli soldiers were injured.

The spokesman said the military did not yet know which military or terrorist organization the men belonged to, but the IDF was looking into the matter.

He said it was not immediately clear if it was an isolated incident or if it was tied to ongoing tensions with Hezbollah, which has vowed to carry out some kind of attack on Israel in retaliation for the death of one of its fighters in an airstrike in Syria last month that it attributed to the Jewish state. There has been no comment from the Lebanon-based group.

area, on July 27, 2020. (Jalaa MAREY / AFP)

“I believe in the coming days, we’ll know better about what organization they were a part of,” Zilberman said.

The spokesman said the military was working on “neutralizing” the area where the four militants were operating — disarming the bombs they planted — so that the explosives could be studied in order to determine which organization the men belonged to.

The military on Monday morning released the footage of the men entering Israeli territory. The weapons that the IDF said were in their possession are not clearly visible in the grainy footage, filmed with a night-vision camera.

In the video, the men can be seen stalking through a field and approaching the security fence. The suspects can then be seen standing behind a mound of dirt before being apparently hit with a missile, which caused an explosion where they were standing.

Asked why the IDF was prepared to release the footage from Sunday night, but not from an incident last week in which the military said a group of Hezbollah operatives attempted to carry out an attack on Mount Dov along the Israel-Lebanon border, Zilberman said the decision was made out of “operational” considerations.

The military believes that releasing the footage of the failed Hezbollah attack from July would embarrass the group and perhaps increase the chances of some kind of retaliation.

According to Zilberman, the outpost where the men placed the explosive was located in an enclave in the area of Tel Fares along the border that previously housed a clinic operated by a Christian charity, under the auspices of the IDF, to treat Syrian civilians who were affected by the country’s civil war. It was closed when Syrian dictator Bashar Assad’s forces retook the Syrian Golan in 2018.

In the past, the area was controlled by the Islamic State terror group, which attempted to carry out a small number of attacks along the border.

Over the past weeks, Hezbollah has threatened some form of retaliation for the death of one of its fighters last week in Syria in an airstrike that it attributed to Israel, but which the Jewish state has not officially acknowledged conducting.

Bracing for the attack, the IDF sent an infantry battalion to the Northern Command as reinforcements, along with additional “advanced” firepower in the form of precision-guided surface-to-surface missiles, combat intelligence units and special forces. The military has also ordered its troops and vehicles to keep away from areas along the border that are vulnerable to attack.

Last Monday, the IDF said it thwarted an attempt by Hezbollah to send a team of fighters into the Israeli-controlled territory of Mount Dov, also known as Shebaa Farms, to carry out an attack. According to the military, the Hezbollah cell made it a few meters across the border before IDF troops opened fire at the operatives — apparently not hitting them, but driving them back into Lebanon.

Hezbollah officially denied that an attack had taken place, but did not explicitly dispute that its members had crossed into the Israeli-controlled enclave.

The terror group said a reprisal for its fallen operative in Syria was still to come.

In the past, Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate for losses of its fighters in Syria with attacks on Israel. That was the case in September, when the terror group fired three anti-tank guided missiles at Israeli military targets along the Lebanese border, narrowly missing an IDF armored ambulance with five soldiers inside, after the IDF killed two of its fighters in Syria the month before.

Virgin Galactic unveils designs for Mach 3 commercial passenger jet

0

The British company wants to fly people at supersonic speeds.

Virgin Galactic says this is what a “new frontier in high speed travel” looks like.

The aerospace company unveiled Monday its first renderings of a supersonic commercial jet that it hopes will be able to move passengers around the globe at speeds of up to 2,300 miles per hour.

“The basic parameters of the initial high speed aircraft design include a targeted Mach 3 certified delta-wing aircraft that would have capacity for 9 to 19 people at an altitude above 60,000 feet and would also be able to incorporate custom cabin layouts to address customer needs, including Business or First Class seating arrangements,” Virgin Galactic said in a statement.

The plane, the company added, “would take off and land like any other passenger aircraft and be expected to integrate into existing airport infrastructure and international airspace around the world.”

Shares of  Virgin Galactic Holdings rose 4.81 percent to $23.23 in Monday trading.

Virgin Galactic said it’s working with international regulatory committees to make sure the plane meets safety and environmental standards. It also has formed a partnership with Rolls-Royce “to collaborate in designing and developing engine propulsion technology for high speed commercial aircraft.”

“We have made great progress so far, and we look forward to opening up a new frontier in high speed travel,” said George Whitesides, Virgin Galactic’s chief space officer.

Mendi Baron – The Link Between Teenage Pot Smoking and Adult Depression

0

When teens start smoking marijuana at a young age, it can cause damage to their brains as they’re developing and can cause mental and emotional problems as they get older. Now a report on NBC News is looking at the link between teen pot smoking, and whether it could lead to depression as teens grow older.

The Potential Long Term Mental Damage With Pot Smoking

As NBC reported, a new study states that when teens and younger adolescents smoke marijuana, it could increase the risk of depression and suicidal thoughts as they get older. This study was published by JAMA Psychiatry, and researchers made a disturbing find that there was a 40% increase in people risking serious depression and a 50% jump in suicidal thoughts from smoking marijuana when they’re younger.

As one doctor explained, “given the large number of adolescents who smoke cannabis, the risk in the population becomes very big.” When you do the math, the statistics can get scary. “About 7 percent of depression is probably linked to the use of cannabis in adolescence, which translates into more than 400,000.”

Current Teen Marijuana Stats

NBC also reports that right now cannabis use is still high among teenagers. Starting as early as junior high, 14% of eighth graders have admitted to using cannabis “at some point in their lives,” with 32% of 10th graders admitting to cannabis use, and 43% of 12th graders coping to it as well. (These stats were taken from over 23,000 teens and adolescents polled.)

By going through the research and statistics, this study found that for people who smoked marijuana before they turned eighteen, they could be 1.4 times more likely to be at risk for depression, and could 1.5 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts. (Not to mention these teens could end up being 3.46 times more likely to try suicide when they’re adults than teens who don’t indulge in marijuana.)

Looking at Marijuana and Teen Depression

Right now there is indeed tremendous popularity with teens and marijuana, as well as teens and vaping. So many feel that both are relatively harmless, especially with marijuana becoming legalized around the country and vaping being the hot trend among teens, but that’s not so.

The people behind this study are hoping it will provide a warning to people that aren’t aware of the harmful effects of marijuana, especially with adolescents whose brains are still developing. One psychiatrist called the adolescent brain “under construction” until they reach their early twenties. “We already know that [cannabis] can impair attention, learning, and memory.”

The fact that cannabis can now also be a factor in depression and suicidal thoughts is another great cause for concern, and once again proves that cannabis is far from harmless.

Yet at the same time, this also gives a signpost for doctors and psychiatrists to look out for with adolescents and young adults. Many teens who smoke cannabis also have other issues, and this could be a flag to many healthcare professionals that a young adult needs help.

Dr. Mindy Boxer – Foods to Eat to Help Depression

Many have heard the question posed what came first, the chicken or the egg? But how does that concept apply to Depression? It’s well-known that when we’re depressed, our motivation and interest in maintaining a healthy and balanced Diet subsides in the same way our energy does. Harvard Medical Students positioned that same question in relation to Depression; what came first, depression or a poor diet?

Thankfully, researchers have addressed this question and found that a healthy diet was indeed associated with a significantly decreased risk of developing depressive symptoms. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, patients were treated for two years with Antioxidants or placebos. After two years, those who were treated with antioxidants had a significantly lower Depression score.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Eating healthy foods gives you a better chance to reduce your Depressive symptoms than eating a diet of processed food that may be high in sugars and unhealthy fats.

Additionally, it’s known that there are approximately 10 times as many Bacterial cells as human cells in the body. These bacteria serve many purposes including the curation of Vitamin K, digesting the food we consume and even regulating our Immune System.

This implies that maintaining a healthy Gut Bacteria and overall diet can improve your mood.

SO, WHAT SHOULD I EAT?

Suggested foods to eat are lots of Green Leafy Plants (including fruits and vegetables), whole unprocessed grains, seeds & nuts, and lean proteins such as Pastuered Eggs, or Fish. (Wild, not Farmed!).   To break them down even further, take note of the following foods and their purpose (all of which fight Depression):

  • Inflammation:Spinach, Kale, Swiss Chard, Berries, Mushrooms and Onions.
  • Mood Boosting & Omega 3:Walnuts, Chia Seeds, Fish (Wild Salmon, Tuna and Sardines), and even certain brands of Organic Eggs, or yogurt.
  • Oleic Acid: Avocado, Raw cheese, pasta and meats such as chicken, beef or pork
  • Antioxidants:Raspberries, Strawberries, Blueberries and Blackberries are some of the highest Antioxidant foods available to us. Other foods include Sweet Potato, oranges, and peppers.
  • Folic acid and alpha-lipoic acid: Tomatoes, Broccoli, Spinach and Brussels Sprouts.

WHICH FOODS SHOULD I AVOID?

Avoid foods made with added sugars or flours such as baked goods (donuts and pastries), breads, pastas and processed cereals. One should also minimize the consumption of animal fats and processed meats.

OTHER ITEMS TO CONSIDER

It’s important to remember that health starts from within. Maintaining a healthy balance of self-care, such as providing yourself with adequate Sleep, Hydration and Physical Activity is just as important as eating well.

There is an overwhelming amount of evidence that supports the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Having balanced health helps with everything from Cardiovascular Disease, Dementia, Cancer and even Mental Health disorders including- you guessed it – Depression!

PhylIis Shallman – Improve Your Creativity

0

There are some aspects of creativity that you just can’t fake.

Some people seem to be born with an eye for the new and the unexpected and the exciting. There’s nothing wrong with conventional thinking; you probably don’t want a doctor or nurse known for an avant-garde attitude! But there are times when we’re confronted by problems without obvious solutions. We have to think outside the box to overcome and make progress. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to approach life more creatively. You might not become a Van Gogh, but these tips might come in handy the next time you encounter a roadblock.

Talk to the experts to expand your horizons
Experts can be a touch boring, especially when they keep lording their knowledge over you at dinner parties. But they can also be a huge source of inspiration, if you know how to talk to them! Instead of zoning out or looking for a way to interject your own opinion, start listening for opportunities to ask questions. Look for things you don’t understand about what they’re saying or an idea that strikes you as interesting and ask them about it. And when they’re done explaining it, try repeating it back in your own words. You might be surprised by the connections that your brain starts to make. Plus, the person you’re talking to will feel valued and appreciated!

Get bored
Boredom births creativity.(1) It’s counterintuitive, but it makes sense when you think about it. Your brain likes to be busy. Watching paint dry or reading the phonebook is so dull that (if you actually did those activities) you’d spontaneously start exploring new ideas just to pass the time. Your brain is never less inhibited or less constrained than when you’re performing a mundane task. Clear out some time in your schedule for a boring activity. Maybe (safely!) try voice recording your ideas in the car on your commute to and from work. You might find a long shower is the perfect time to brainstorm and think through problems. Get creative and do something monotonous!

Pick up a creative hobby
If your schedule is already full and you’re constantly on the move, picking up a hobby might seem kind of pointless. But a hobby can teach you important lessons about creativity that you can’t learn anywhere else. You might learn that performing a beautiful song is composed of dozens of little micro-movements and components that all take time to learn and master. You might learn that painting a stunning landscape starts with a single brushstroke. And you might learn that out-foxing your opponent in chess comes down to your burgeoning ability to imagine a dozen possible outcomes and responding well when things don’t go your way. Clear out some time, talk to an expert, and start creating something just for fun!

Start with the craziest idea first
Convention is the biggest enemy of creativity. We’ve all had ideas that we’re afraid to share or voice because we think people will think we’re stupid. But being creative is all about seeing potential where no one else can. And that by default means some folks are going to shoot you looks. Overcome all of that by expressing your wildest ideas first. Come out of the gate with a barn burner. Listen to serious feedback and criticisms, but don’t be afraid to voice your ideas. You might just stumble on something brilliant!

These tips may not transform you into a generation-defining sculptor or wordsmith*. But they might just spark the creative edge you need to see problems in a new light and find opportunities where others see danger. So make some time, start some conversations, pick up some hobbies, and start dreaming!

*Please let me know if this article does happen to make you into a generation defining artist of any kind!

Israeli Company SodaStream Creates New Breathing Machine to Fight COVID-19

0

The world-famous Israeli beverage company teamed up with Hadassah hospital to make a new COVID-19 “breathing machine.”

Never dismiss the power of brainstorming. At the height of the first corona wave in Israel, when there was a feared shortage of ventilator machines, medical staff at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem were discussing the problem and one of them had an idea.

“I was sitting with a friend named Shlomo Friedman, a biotechnology engineer, and he thought for a few minutes and suddenly told me – Sodastream is the solution,” said Dr. Akiva Nachshon, a senior ICU physician. “I looked at him and said, ‘What’s the connection?’”

Friedman realized the principles SodaStream uses to put bubbles in soda might help coronavirus patients to breathe because ventilators, aside from being in short supply, were invasive and themselves caused side-damage. Nachshon called SodaStream, where head of R & D Avi Cohen got the message, and the two met later that day.

Sodastream latched on to the idea, and less than four months later, the StreamO2 prototype was approved by health officials for a 40-person clinical trial.

The device works not by sticking a tube into the lungs like a ventilator, but by pushing a high flow rate of oxygen mixed with air into the patient’s nose with controlled temperature and humidity. The result is a low-cost machine that can help coronavirus patients suffering from respiratory distress who are not in serious condition and can at least breathe on their own.

Ventilator machines that would have been used for such patients are now freed up for those in serious condition.

“In some patients it is preventative, in others it can delay the respiration and in fact shorten the respiration that is expected of the patient,” said Nachshon.

Trials are underway at the Hadassah Medical Center and, if successful, SodaStream will ramp up for mass production.

The innovative Israeli company SodaStream, known by many for its Super Bowl commercials featuring Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson, was bought in 2018 by PepsiCo in a blockbuster $3 billion acquisition to add healthier and environmentally friendly products to its line.

IDF says it ambushed a cell planting bombs on Syrian border, killing 4 terrorists

0

Incident comes as military braces for attack by Hezbollah, which is seeking revenge for a fighter killed in an airstrike attributed to Israel.

Israeli forces foiled an attempt to place bombs along the border with Syria, opening fire and hitting four “terrorists,” the Israel Defense Forces said after midnight Sunday.

The incident comes with the military on high alert for an attack by Hezbollah, which is seeking revenge for a fighter killed in an airstrike attributed to Israel.

“A short time ago, an IDF force foiled an attempt to place explosive devices along the border with Syria,” the army said in a statement.  “Special forces that were carrying out an ambush near an IDF post in the southern Golan Heights spotted a cell with a number of terrorists planting explosive devices along the border.”

The army said “an IDF force and an aircraft opened fire together on the four-member cell and hit them.”

There were no casualties to the IDF.

The statement noted that IDF forces in the north were on a high level of alert and warned Syria that that Israel holds Damascus responsible for any attacks emanating from it’s territory.

While the statement only said the terrorists were “hit,” an IDF spokesperson tweeted they were now “former terrorists” and indicated they were killed.

The incident came amid peak tensions in the area as the military braced for violence by Hezbollah along the border after an alleged attempted attack by the terror group last Monday. Hezbollah has also been active in Syria, where it fought in support of the Assad regime.

Over the past weeks, Hezbollah has threatened some form of retaliation for the death of one of its fighters last week in Syria in an airstrike that it attributed to Israel, but which the Jewish state has not officially acknowledged conducting.

Bracing for the attack, the IDF said it was sending additional “advanced” firepower in the form of precision-guided surface-to-surface missiles, additional combat intelligence units and special forces to the area.

Israeli defense officials scoffed at the terror group’s denial, saying the infiltration attempt had been filmed by military security cameras and that the operatives who took part in it were armed. The IDF did not release film of the incident.

The terror group said a reprisal for its fallen operative in Syria was still to come.

The IDF said the decision to send the additional units to the IDF Northern Command was made in light of a “situational assessment.”

Those reinforcements joined an infantry battalion, additional Iron Dome missile defense batteries and other troops that were sent to the Northern Command last week when Hezbollah first began indicating it planned to carry out an attack along the border as revenge for its fallen operative.

border with Lebanon on July 23, 2020. (Basel Awidat / FLASH90)

Following the incident on Monday, Israel conveyed messages to Lebanon, through third parties, that it did not want the border altercation to devolve into a war.

In the past, Hezbollah has vowed to retaliate for losses of its fighters in Syria with attacks on Israel. This was the case in September, when the terror group fired three anti-tank guided missiles at Israeli military targets along the Lebanese border, narrowly missing an IDF armored ambulance with five soldiers inside, after the IDF killed two of its fighters in Syria the month before.

After rocket attack, Israel hits underground Hamas targets in Gaza

0

Iron Dome intercepts rocket as sirens triggered in Sderot and surrounding communities; interceptor missile fragments damage car

Israeli warplanes hit several Hamas sites in central and southern Gaza Strip early Monday, the Israel Defense Forces said, hours after Palestinians fired a rocket into Israel from the coastal enclave.

The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted the rocket, the IDF said.

The army said warplanes hit a cement factory used in the construction of underground infrastructure and “underground facilities used by the Hamas terror group.”

The Hamas-linked al-Resalah news said that the IDF bombed “a resistance site” west of Khan Younis and agricultural land to the east of the town.

It also said that three missiles were fired at “a site affiliated with the resistance,” west of Rafah.

The rocket triggered sirens in Israeli communities northeast of the Gaza Strip, sending tens of thousands of residents to bomb shelters.

“One [rocket] launch was detected from the territory of the Gaza Strip toward Israel, which was intercepted by aerial defense soldiers,” the military said.

A fragment of the Iron Dome interceptor missile apparently struck a vehicle in the southern town of Sderot, shattering the back windshield.

The sirens were heard in Sderot, as well as the smaller communities of Ibim, Erez, Or Haner and Nir Am in the Sha’ar Hanegev region.

Residents of the area reported hearing the sounds of explosions.

The attack came as Sderot inaugurated a new drive-in movie theater, with dozens of cars full of people watching the maiden film.

The attack also occurred shortly after Brig. Gen. Nimrod Aloni took over as head of the IDF Gaza Division. In a ceremony at the division headquarters in Reim, Aloni took over the position from Brig. Gen. Eliezer Toledano, who has served in the role since 2018.

It was the first time that rockets were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip in nearly a month.

On July 5, terrorists in the enclave fired three rockets into southern Israel. In response, the IDF bombed a number of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.

The normally restive Gaza border region has seen months of calm since a flareup of violence in February, amid reported intensive efforts to reach a long-term truce deal between Israel and Hamas.
