Israel’s energy minister: Impose 10-day nationwide lockdown

0
Yuval Steinitz says closing the country down to combat the rapid rise in COVID-19 cases will benefit the economy in the long term, arguing that the government was too quick to ease restrictions.

Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz has called for a 10-day nationwide lockdown to combat the sharp rise in coronavirus infections.

In an interview on Monday with Ynet, Steinitz said he believes that the country should enforce a closure, while still allowing Israelis to work.

He said that the government was too quick to reopen the economy in May, following the first nationwide lockdown in April, and did not invest enough in enforcing public-health directives.

Regarding Israel’s omission from the list of countries with a low COVID-19 infection rate, which means that Israeli visitors and tourists are banned from entering Europe, Steinitz said that it is “essential to the economy” that Israel remain connected to the rest of the world.

Steinitz said that being disconnected from Europe and the rest of the world for “more than two or three months” will damage “the basic mechanisms of the economy.”

“Aerial disconnection from the world is financially dangerous,” he said. “Sometimes, it is better to make it difficult for ourselves for two weeks in order to make it easier for the rest of the year.”

Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Saturday, protesting what they call Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s failure to address economic woes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

With economic stress deepening in recent weeks, many Israelis believe that the government has not done enough to compensate hundreds of thousands of workers who lost their jobs as a result of restrictions and shutdowns.

Unemployment has surged to more than 20 percent since the start of the coronavirus crisis.

IDF readies for next battle: Six Day War and Yom Kippur War wrapped into one

0
Commander of IDF troops who will face Hezbollah: “The next war will be very challenging and I think we are ready for it.”

Since the 2006 Lebanon war with the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group, the Israel Defense Forces has been revamping and revising and says it is ready for any future confrontation on its northern border, Makor Rishon reported Monday.

IDF Lt. Col. Yoav Schneider knows first-hand that Israel has to be more than ready to quickly defeat Hezbollah. In 2006 he was seriously wounded and his tank crew was killed by a Hezbollah rocket.

Schneider recovered, and the career soldier has channeled all his energy and the lessons learned along the way into being more than prepared as commander of the 82nd Battalion of the 7th Brigade of the Armored Corps.

In a behind-the-scenes interview, Schneider told Makor Rishon that one of the big changes was how the IDF handles field intelligence.

“In order to understand the picture, we need to see the forward command center located here in the Golan Heights,” Schneider said, explaining that soldiers from all units sit in one room with all data screens visible to everyone, resulting in “a tremendous brainstorming session.”

The nature of a future conflict with Hezbollah will be very different.

“This war will look more like the Yom Kippur War and the Six Day War together” in the intensity of the battle, casualties and “great chaos,” said one of his senior officers.

“It’s just that since the Six Day and Yom Kippur wars, the whole world has changed, and so has the IDF,” he noted.

Schneider pointed out that in the 2006 war “we had the intelligence, it just didn’t move into the field.”

Since then the IDF has developed a new system that connects all units and quickly transfers the relevant information down to fighters in the field.

The new method produces a “synergy between the land forces and the rest of the IDF in the air, at sea and even in space.”

Instead of reporting up and down through a command chain, the new system can connect a pilot with a tank commander on the ground deep in enemy territory.

“In the Second Lebanon War, a lot of events depended on the speed of the intelligence getting down to the [battle] field,” he said. “That is exactly why this [new] system was invented.”

Schneider, 35 and now married with three children, says his near-death experience in combat and his recovery and return to service “makes me get up every morning and prepare my battalion for the next war.”

“I chose to live and fight,” Shneider said. “I did not give up on myself… It was not for closing a circle, or for coming back to take revenge,” he explains. “It was mainly to recover.”

Schneider says the biggest goal in a future war is to damage Hezbollah, destroy the organization’s infrastructure, and eliminate its capabilities to target rockets at Israeli civilians – a standard Hezbollah practice that violates international law.

Hezbollah’s huge arsenal of rockets supplied by Iran has “no hermetic solution, but the threat has grown over the last 20 years and we need to address it.”

“Our capabilities are much higher,” he explained. “We are in a much better place.”

While Israeli air power will be needed, Schneider knows that “feet on the ground of the enemy” will be decisive.

“The IDF can defeat Hezbollah and it depends on battalions like me. It is a combination of many missions of all the battalions. And each battalion has its responsibility to meet this mission,” he said.

He admits that in the 2006 Lebanon War “the enemy knew how to leverage his small successes and say ‘I won,’” but Schneider says that if war breaks out, the IDF will move quickly to inflict heavy casualties on Hezbollah, destroy its infrastructure and give a very different outcome.

“The next war will be very challenging and I think we are ready for it. “

New Israeli-Designed ‘Thunderbolt 4’ System Boosts Computer Performance, Connectivity

0
“The arrival of Thunderbolt 4 underscores how Intel is advancing the PC ecosystem toward truly universal connectivity solutions,” says Intel executive.

On July 8, Intel revealed the technical details about Thunderbolt 4, the next generation of its universal cable connectivity solution for Intel’s upcoming Tiger Lake mobile PC processors.

One detail the announcement didn’t mention is that Thunderbolt 4 was developed by Intel’s Client Connectivity Engineering Group in Israel.

“Our group is responsible for this product from top to bottom,” group leader Yehonadav Moshe told the Israeli press.

Operating in Israel since 1974, Intel has about 13,700 employees in its development centers in Haifa, Jerusalem and Petah Tikva, and production facilities in Kiryat Gat. Intel has acquired Israeli companies Mobileye, Moovit and Habana Labs.

The first computers and accessories with Thunderbolt 4 ports are also expected to be available this year, including laptops based on Intel’s innovation program code-named “Project Athena.”

“Thunderbolt provides consumers with a leading connectivity standard across a range of devices, helping to advance computing experiences and delivering on the promise of USB-C with simplicity, performance and reliability. The arrival of Thunderbolt 4 underscores how Intel is advancing the PC ecosystem toward truly universal connectivity solutions,” said Jason Ziller, Intel general manager of the Client Connectivity Division.

Rabbi Jonathan Gewirtz – The Nod from G-d

Operation Inspiration

One of my favorite lines is a somewhat cynical quip from a television character. He said, (at least as it was written for him,) “If you speak to G-d, you’re religious. If He speaks to you, you’re psychotic.”

The joke is based on the fact that though many people daven to Hashem, none would be crazy enough to think He actually responds, right? And I don’t mean that He answers the prayers by making things happen that you’ve asked for, because I think most of us will agree that He does that. Those who do hear Him speak to them may have an issue that could require medical attention, or some time to sleep off whatever is affecting them. But that’s not what I’m discussing.

What I’m talking about is an actual response saying, “Yes, I heard you. I am listening and involved with your life.” We don’t even hear Hashem say “No,” or laugh when we ask to win the lottery for the umpteenth time and promise all sorts of charity if we do.

I think we’d all be in agreement that we don’t have prophets who can hear Hashem talking to them, and that we’re not likely to have a dream in which Hashem appears to us and tells us a specific message.

But does He ever send you hints? Not like you see some numbers and that’s what you buy for your lottery tickets, but something that lets you know He is there with you? I submit that He absolutely does and that if we train ourselves to see them, we’ll pick up the subtle clues that Hashem is an active part of our lives.

I’ll give you an example. A few weeks ago, I wrote about saying thank you to people. Not because you have to be polite and say it, but because you’re actually thinking of them and reflecting on the benefit you received from their actions, even if they didn’t intentionally do them for you.

I was telling someone the story of how the fellow I thanked for sponsoring a sefer called to thank me for thanking him, and suddenly, I noticed that the car in front of me had a bumper sticker from some school or college that I’d never heard of. At least, I imagine it’s an institution of higher learning because it was laid out in a way that universities do.

What was so unusual about that? The name of the school I’d not heard of before was the same as the name of the father in whose honor the book was dedicated! It struck me as a “nod from G-d,” a small gesture from Hashem that He and I are on the same page.

Speaking of being on the same page, how many times do we find that the Daf Yomi contains something relevant to what’s going on that day or week? Quite often! When we do, I’m sure many people smile with satisfaction appreciating this “coincidence,” which is anything but. It’s all part of the plan to let us know we’re in contact with Hashem.

I’ve often found connections between two different things I was learning and I take it as a loving sign that Hashem is joining in on those study sessions and shiurim. He weaves those little threads together to show me that He’s happy I’m learning. And get this one:

I was writing my weekly Parsha sheet, and chose a topic that involved the trumpets sounded when the Jews went into battle. Perhaps a slightly obscure topic, but I found a lesson in it and decided to expand on the concept. Soon afterwards, I had to pause my writing in order to pick up my daughter from an appointment.

When I got into the car, my phone connected to the stereo via Bluetooth and began playing a song. I’m not big on music; my kids control the playlists and song titles. The volume wasn’t even very high but then I looked down and noticed the name of the song playing. It was called “Hariyu,” and referred to a posuk in Tehillim (98) about blowing trumpets before Hashem,

Not only was it connected to the trumpets for blowing, but the lesson I was bringing out was precisely about the fact that it must be “before Hashem,” as Dovid HaMelech wrote!

At that moment, I felt validated. My efforts earned me a wink from my Heavenly Father; an acknowledgement that I was on the right path. Just as the bumper sticker let me know that I was right for thanking the fellow, I could feel Hashem communicating with me.

We might experience this other times, too. Like if we’re about to say something we shouldn’t and we bite our cheek inadvertently. It’s Hashem reminding us that He’s in the moment. Sometimes it’s more subtle, and it’s a phrase we overhear, or a glimpse we get of something that triggers a connection to the thoughts in our brains. But it’s there. He DOES speak to us.

No, Hashem doesn’t speak to us as He did to Moshe or even to the other Nevi’im. But don’t ever believe that He isn’t communicating with us frequently, using signs or signals that aren’t too obvious, but nevertheless remain, a distinct nod from G-d.

UK Study Finds Recovered COVID-19 Patients Could Lose Immunity Within Months

0
Assumptions of herd immunity to the coronavirus as more people get infected may be wrong.

According to a worrying new study by British researchers, people who recover from
COVID-19 tend to lose their immunity within several months.

A team from King’s College in London has found that the amount of antibodies in recovered patients’ blood was significantly down after three months, meaning they could be vulnerable to reinfection, The Guardian reports.

That means people could catch the virus year after year, much like the common cold.

If confirmed by more research, the British research findings would mean that hopes for getting rid of the virus would now depend on the development of an effective and safe vaccine.

Report: Iran and China agree to trade and military partnership

0
New agreement would clear the way for billions of dollars of Chinese investments in Iranian energy and other sectors.

Iran and China have quietly drafted a sweeping economic and security partnership that would clear the way for billions of dollars of Chinese investments in energy and other sectors, The New York Times reported on Sunday.

The partnership, detailed in an 18-page proposed agreement obtained by the newspaper, would vastly expand Chinese presence in banking, telecommunications, ports, railways and dozens of other projects.

In exchange, China would receive a regular — and, according to an Iranian official and an oil trader, heavily discounted — supply of Iranian oil over the next 25 years.

The document also describes deepening military cooperation, potentially giving China a foothold in a region that has been a strategic preoccupation of the United States for decades.

It calls for joint training and exercises, joint research and weapons development and intelligence sharing — all to fight “the lopsided battle with terrorism, drug and human trafficking and cross-border crimes”, according to The New York Times.

The partnership — first proposed by China’s leader, Xi Jinping, during a visit to Iran
in 2016 — was approved by President Hassan Rouhani’s cabinet in June, Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said last week.

Iranian officials have publicly stated that there is a pending agreement with China,
and one Iranian official, as well as several people who have discussed it with the Iranian government, confirmed that it is the document obtained by The Times, which is labeled “final version” and dated June 2020.

It has not yet been submitted to Iran’s Parliament for approval or made public, stoking suspicions in Iran about how much the government is preparing to give away to China.

The move undercuts the Trump administration’s efforts to isolate the Iranian government because of its nuclear and military ambitions.

Since withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, the US
has reimposed sanctions on Iran that were lifted as part of that deal.

The next challenge for the US is renewing a UN arms embargo on Iran which expires in October. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently vowed to use all means available
to extend the UN arms embargo on Iran.

The United States has put forward a resolution to extend the embargo but faces opposition from veto-wielding Russia and China.

The New York Times noted that if put into effect as detailed, the partnership between Iran and China would create new and potentially dangerous flash points in the deteriorating relationship between China and the United States.

The Chinese investments in Iran, which two people who have been briefed on the deal
said would total $400 billion over 25 years, could spur still more US punitive actions against Chinese companies, which have already been targeted by the administration in recent months.

“The United States will continue to impose costs on Chinese companies that aid Iran,
the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism,” a State Department spokeswoman wrote
in response to questions about the draft agreement.

“By allowing or encouraging Chinese companies to conduct sanctionable activities with the Iranian regime, the Chinese government is undermining its own stated goal of promoting stability and peace.”

‘Poland will never pay for Jewish assets lost during Holocaust’

0
Polish President Andrzej Duda says damages should be paid for “by the one that started” World War II.

Polish President Andrzej Duda has stated that his country will never approve reparations for heirless Jewish assets lost during the Holocaust, financial news agency Bloomberg reported over the weekend.

“There won’t be any damages paid for heirless property,” Duda told Poland’s state television after the topic has come up ahead of the upcoming nation’s election.

“I will never sign a law that will privilege any ethnic group vis-à-vis others. Damages should be paid by the one that started the war,” he added.

The restitution issue has resurfaced in recent years following calls by Jewish organizations for compensation of property of victims who died in World War II and left no heirs, according to Bloomberg.

Duda stressed that descendants can appeal in Polish courts for reparations but dismissed the notion that his country should pay for historic wrongs caused by Nazi Germany.

Poland is the only member of the European Union that has not passed restitution legislation for property seized by the Nazis or nationalized under Soviet Russia.

With Duda currently sliding in the polls, his campaign has reportedly focused on mobilizing the conservative vote as much as possible, and to evoking nationalist sentiment.

Israeli Air Force launches new elite unit to fight Iranian aggression

0
On Sunday, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) launched a new unit called Wing 7.

Wing 7 combines existing special forces units and will be active in Israel’s efforts to thwart Iranian aggression in the region.

The new wing is a special forces entity that combines a number of current units, including Shaldag and Unit 669, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The unit was feted during an opening ceremony at the Palmahim base, not far from Tel Aviv.

Among the ceremony’s attendees was IAF Commander Maj.-Gen. Amikam Norkin.

According to a statement by the IDF’s Spokesperson’s Unit quoted by the Post, Wing 7 “was established in light of the operational need, changes, and expansion of threats in various arenas.”

The statement described the new wing as “a complementary and unique component to the IAF’s operations through special operations behind enemy lines, during routine, and in times of emergency to carry out aerial missions.”

The Post report also indicated Wing 7 would be active in Israel’s efforts to thwart Iranian aggression in the region.

While Israel rarely confirms or denies strikes on Iranian assets in Syria, experts estimate that the IAF and other Israeli forces have carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syrian territory since 2017.

At the end of June, Israel was blamed for an airstrike that killed seven at Iranian sites in Syria.

Israel has consistently reiterated that it will not tolerate Iranian military entrenchment in Syria. Iran bankrolls and trains terror proxies in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen.

Report: US says it will recognize Israeli sovereignty plan only if Blue and White agrees

0
White House is reportedly demanding that Israel only move forward with
sovereignty plan if Blue & White agrees and concessions are made to PA.

The White House is pressing Israel to hold off on moving forward with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s plan to apply Israeli sovereignty over parts of Judea and Samaria until Netanyahu wins the backing of senior coalition partner Benny Gantz, Kan reported Sunday evening.

According to the report, the US is urging the Likud to reach an agreement with Blue and White on the sovereignty plan, so as to maintain the Israeli government’s stability.

In addition, the report claims that the White House is trying to extract Israeli concessions to the Palestinian Authority in exchange for US recognition of Israeli sovereignty over parts of Judea and Samaria, in the hope of using the concessions to bring the Palestinian Authority to the negotiating table.

Prime Minister Netanyahu was widely expected to bring his sovereignty plan to the government on July 1st, the first day he was allowed to do so under the coalition deal with Gantz.

Yet nearly two weeks since then, Netanyahu has neither formally unveiled the plan nor made any announcement on it.

Senior Israeli officials, including Likud Minister Ze’ev Elkin, have said the government is working closely with the US to reach an agreement on a sovereignty plan that will ensure US recognition.

Chinese tabloid tweets about ‘aircraft carrier killer’ missiles – US Navy responds

0
The Global Times, a state-run tabloid in China, got the attention of the U.S. Navy
on Sunday when it tweeted about Beijing’s “aircraft carrier killer” missiles while
two U.S. carriers are in the region.

The paper, which has been described as a “jingoistic tabloid,” said Beijing has a “wide selection” of these missiles, and any U.S. carrier “movement in the region is at the pleasure” of the People’s Liberation Army, according to “analysts.”

“And yet, there they are,” the Navy Chief of Information Twitter account posted. “Two @USNavy aircraft carriers operating in the international waters of the South China Sea. #USSNimitz & #USSRonaldReagan are not intimidated by #AtOurDiscretion.”

The relationship between Beijing and Washington has reportedly taken a nosedive over
the elusive trade deal, a coronavirus blame game and China’s recent crackdown in
Hong Kong.

A Navy official told Fox News that the two carriers are in the disputed South China Sea
to conduct military drills.

The Wall Street Journal was first to report about the drills, which Rear Adm. George Wikoff said was to “signal to our partners and allies that we are committed to regional security and stability.”

A B-52 bomber from Louisiana flew a 28-hour mission to train with jets from the aircraft carriers in the region, according to the Air Force. The move was seen as another message to China.

China is also conducting exercises in the region and the Global Times, a tabloid produced by the People’s Daily, the official paper of Beijing’s Communist Party, reported that “the
US again showed its hypocrisy and demonstrated that it is the real source of potential regional instability.” The paper cited unnamed “analysts”.
