On Friday, June 26 and Sunday, June 28, there is an opportunity for the community to participate in a special volunteer project that may save lives.

Boy Scout Troop 360 (chartered under Beth Jacob Congregation) and Hatzolah of Los Angeles are coordinating for an Eagle Scout Project inspired by the memory of Dr. Joel Schwartz, Yoel ben Avraham a”h.

The Neighborhood Defibrillator Accessibility project will survey storefronts along Pico-Robertson’s primary pedestrian thoroughfare, Pico Boulevard, from the Museum of Tolerance to Mesivta Birkas Yitzchak:

  • To determine if they have a defibrillator (AED).
  • If they know where the closest AED can be found.
  • Whether they would be willing to post a placard in their storefronts indicating where the closest device can be found
  • There is no cost to the store or business.  There will be no sales.
  • Information on how to obtain an AED will be distributed as the survey is done.

After the survey is completed, bright custom placards will be printed, laminated and distributed to be affixed to windows inside the storefronts highlighting maps and arrows to the nearest AED available during business hours.    We hope this idea will spread to other neighborhoods.

There will also be a Google Map — suitable for smartphones — showing participating AED locations participating in the survey.

Seconds matter.   Help do what is possible while waiting for Hatzolah or another ambulance to arrive.  Perhaps a defibrillator is merely 50-100? away.

The more volunteers, the faster the completion.  A sign-up form and a detailed description of the project is available at http://www.bhtroop360.org/eagle-projects

Pairs of survey-takers will be given flyers, clipboards and approximately 20 storefronts, shuls or hotels to survey and inform.  Details to follow.  We need people for 2 or more hours on Friday June 26 from 10am to 2pm (volunteers can choose 10-noon, 11-1 or 12-2) and Sunday from 10am to 4pm (volunteers can choose 10-noon, 11-1, noon-2, 1-3 or 2-4).  You may volunteer for more than one time slot.  There are approximately 150 storefronts on Pico from Roxbury to Crescent Heights.  We also wish to include all the synagogues and hotels within a quarter mile of Pico Boulevard along the surveyed corridor.

Students who need volunteer service hours will be given a letter confirming their service.

Please volunteer and we look forward to meeting you, handing you a clipboard with instructions, surveys and flyers, your team’s list of locations, and a bottle of water.  When you’re done, you’ll return the survey to the starting point.
