Considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, he helped bring Argentina the 1986 World Cup title. In the quarter finals of that World Cup against England, he scored one of the most spectacular goals in all of World Cup history when he outplayed, outran and outtricked the entire England defense, including the goalkeeper.
He played for club teams Napoli and Barcelona, among others, playing many great games.
Prime Minister Netanyahu responded to the news of Maradona’s death, saying “Maradona was a true friend of Israel. I express condolences for the death of my dear friend.”
Argentina’s president Alberto Fernandez has declared a three day national mourning for Maradona.
