Elderly Israeli Women Stabbed in Jerusalem Terror Attack

Written by Jonathan Benedek/TPS on May 10, 2016

Jerusalem (TPS) – Two elderly women were stabbed by two assailants this morning at the Promenade in Armon Hanatziv, overlooking Jerusalem’s Old City. The two victims were moderately wounded and treated at the scene by Magen David Adom, then transported to Shaare Zedek Medical Center where they are currently in stable condition.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the attack was terror-related.

“We saw two women, approximately 80 years old, with stab wounds, one on her limbs and one in her upper body,” said Magen David Adom paramedic Shlomi Tadgi. “They were both fully conscious and communicated with us.”

According to a police investigation, the two victims were walking with 3 other elderly women near the Armon Hanaztiv Promenade, when they noticed two Arabs sitting on a bench wearing hoods. The two men waited for the group to pass them and then attacked them from behind.

The police immediately initiated a large-scale pursuit of the stabbers, who fled the scene shortly thereafter to the nearby predominantly Arab neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber. Two suspects in the neighborhood were arrested in the police’s pursuit, but were later released after the police concluded that they were not involved in the attack. The search is still ongoing.

Armon Hanaztiv is the location of several attacks during the current wave of attacks that began last fall. Recently, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) celebrated the decreased frequency of terror attacks from 78 last October to approximately 20 in March.
