Volkswagen to cease doing business in Iran, boosting US economic sanctions

“We are pleased with this decision because Iran diverts its economic resources away from its people to spread violence and instability across the globe,” said U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell.

The United States has convinced Volkswagen AG to comply with sanctions on Iran and cease conducting most business in the regime, a U.S. official told Bloomberg news.

The Trump administration and the German automotive firm ironed out the final details on Tuesday after weeks of negotiations, according to U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, who noted that Volkswagen will still be allowed to do some business in Iran under a humanitarian exception.

The Volkswagen move will likely undermine the European Union notion that Iran should be a place for businesses, as the E.U. has been trying to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal, from which the U.S. withdrew in May.

The second round of U.S. sanctions on Iran is scheduled for Nov. 5.

Philanthropist Ira Rennert donates Torah to Efrat synagogue for “ilui neshama” of slain hero.

Arutz Sheva, 21/09/18 15:54

Philanthropist Ira Rennert has announced that he will donate a Torah scroll for the ilui neshama– literally, the elevation of the soul – of Ari Fuld, who was slain Sunday in a cowardly terrorist stabbing.

The scroll will go to the synagogue in the city of Efrat in which Fuld Hy”d prayed.

Rennert informed the Fuld family of his intent through a trusted emissary – Rabbi Aharon Binah, Head of Netiv Aryeh Yeshiva.

Rennert will also be donating 24 additional Torah scrolls, all in memory of fallen IDF soldiers and victims of terror. The ceremony in which the final letters of the scrolls are written will take place at Netiv Aryeh Yeshiva, with Israel’s chief rabbis presiding.

The Jewish-American businessman, who resides in New York, is one of the leading philanthropists in the haredi and religious-Zionist Torah world. He has thus far donated over 160 Torah scrolls to various institutions, and also foots the bill for Netiva Aryeh’s institutions in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Bloody prayer shawl from Yom Kippur pogrom found in former Lodz ghetto

(JTA) — Part of a blood-stained prayer shawl from a 1940 Yom Kippur pogrom was found in the former ghetto of Lodz, Poland and brought to Israel, its finder said.

The part of the shawl, or tallit, is a decorative collar known as an atarah. It was discovered this month by a worker with the Shem Olam Holocaust museum near Hadera in Israel under the wooden floor of a structure that used to be part of the Jewish ghetto of the central Polish city, Israel’s Channel 2 reported Friday.

According to the museum’s director, Avraham Kriger, the blood on the tallit belonged to a victim of a Nazi-led pogrom that erupted on the eve of Yom Kippur in 1940.

Chaim Rumkowski, the head of the local Judenrat, the Jewish council appointed by the Nazis to administer life inside the ghetto, had arranged for Yom Kippur prayers to take place at a former cinema that had been turned into a synagogue, according to the Channel 2 report, which is based on Shem Olam’s research.

Nazi officers came to witness the Yom Kippur event, along with Rumkowski. Thousands of Jews had amassed at the entrance to the theater, as hundreds prayed inside. At a certain point, ghetto police officers began violently dispersing the crowd, resulting in the death of several people, according to the report. Nazi officers also joined the beating.

The bloody tallit collar was discovered during renovations to the former theater, Channel 2 reported, along with several crumbling prayer books.

“It’s a chilling, a rare, find,” Kriger, whose institution focuses on religious life during the Holocaust, told Channel 2. “It attests as to Jewish religious life in the ghetto and the unfathomable cruelty of the German murders, who showed no mercy even on the holiest day to the Jews, never ceasing to butcher, Jews abuse and murder them in cold blood.”

IDF braces for fresh violence on Gaza border

“March of Return” group urges Gazans to take part in disturbances along border • IAF hits terror cell launching arson balloons into Israel • Balloon rigged with explosives detonates in Sdot Negev, close to homes • Council head: We want a harsh response.

Nikki Guttman and Israel Hayom Staff

The Israel Defense Forces braced for violent clashes on the Gaza Strip-Israel border Friday as the “March of Return” national committee urged Gazans to take part in demonstrations and disturbances along the border.

Judging by past demonstrations, which have been staged on a weekly basis since late March, protesters were expected to throw rocks and firebombs at Israeli troops securing the border and try to breach the border fence and infiltrate Israeli territory.

A spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committee posted a call online for all Gaza residents to march to the border to protest the blockade on the Gaza Strip. “We will break the blockade, at any price,” he wrote. “The price of freedom in blood.”

Since the demonstrations began in March, 20,000 Gazans have been wounded in clashes with Israeli forces and dozens have been killed. Several of the wounded have criticized Hamas for organizing the demonstrations but then abandoning stricken participants.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Daoud Shahab told the Palestinian news agency Maan that the demonstrations would continue, because the residents of Gaza have no other means of pressuring Israel to lift the blockade.

Shahab added that the number of Palestinian demonstrators at the border marches has consistently increased, particularly since talks in Cairo regarding the blockade have yet to yield results.

On Thursday, the Israeli Air Force targeted a Palestinian terrorist cell launching incendiary balloons into Israel from the Gaza Strip, the Israeli media reported. Local reports in Gaza maintained that there were several casualties in the incident.

Meanwhile, incendiary balloons from Gaza set 10 fires in Israeli communities on Thursday. One such balloon carried a device that exploded some 300 feet from a residential area in the Sdot Negev regional council.

“The balloon terrorism is escalating, and today an explosive mechanism went off,” the council said in a statement. “The device was spotted by our security chief and a police sapper unit was dispatched to the site and found its wreckage. We were extremely lucky not to have any casualties, as there were civilians nearby.”

The head of the council, Tamir Idan, said that “this incident is a terrorist attack in every respect. We want a harsh response and we trust the IDF to take the necessary actions.”

Earlier Thursday Eyal Hajbi, the chief of security at the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council, said that the incendiary balloons were gradually becoming more sophisticated, saying that recently they have been upgraded from mere arson devices to delivering grenades and explosives.

“We have seen an escalation when it comes to their quality, not their quantity. They can cause real harm and death,” he said.

Phyllis Shallman -Should you buy or lease your next vehicle?

0

Behind housing costs, transportation costs are often one of the top expenses in most households.

Auto leasing has been popular for several decades, but many people still aren’t sure about the sensibility of leasing vs. buying a car, how the math works, and which is really the better value.

Should you lease a car?
In many cases, you can lease a car for less than the monthly payment for financing the exact same car. This is because with leasing, you never build any equity in the vehicle. Essentially, you are renting the vehicle for a predetermined number of miles per year with a promise that you’ll take good care of it and won’t let your kids spill ice cream on the seats. (After all, it’s not really your car.)

At the end of the lease – most often 2 or 3 years – you’ll have the option to buy the car. At this point, in many cases you would be able to find a comparable car for a few thousand less than the residual value on the car you leased. After the lease has expired, most people choose to lease another newer car, rather than buy the car they leased.

If you don’t drive many miles, there may be some advantages to leasing over buying, particularly if you prefer to drive something newer or if you need a late-model car for business reasons. As a bonus, for short-term or standard leases, the car is usually under warranty for the duration of the lease and maintenance costs are typically only for minor service items.

Should you buy a car?
If you’re like most people, when you buy a car, you’ll probably need to finance it rather than plunk down a lump sum in cash. Rates are relatively low, but you can still expect to pay a few thousand dollars in interest costs over the course of the loan. Longer loans have higher rates and more expensive vehicles can make the interest costs add up quickly. Still, at the end of the loan, you own the car.

Older cars usually have higher maintenance costs, but it may be less expensive to keep a car with under 150,000 miles and pay for any repairs, rather than make payments on a new car. Cars are also running reliably much longer now. The average age of cars and light trucks on the roads currently is up to 12 years, which means if you had a 5-year loan, you could be driving for 7 years (or more) without having to make a car payment.¹

So a big part of the savings in buying a car vs. leasing can occur if you keep the car for several years after it’s paid off. Cars depreciate most rapidly during the first 5 years of ownership, meaning you could take a big hit on the trade-in value during that time. Keeping the car for a bit longer puts you into a period where the car is depreciating less rapidly and you can benefit financially from not having a car payment. But if you think you might be tempted to trade the car in after 5 years (and you typically drive under 15,000 miles per year), you may want to take a closer look at leasing.

Keeping your car for 10 years
How would you like to “make” an extra $28,000 over the next 10 years? That’s enough to buy another car! All things being equal (you make the same modest down payment on a leased car as a financed car), and assuming an average auto loan rate for a $30,000 vehicle, you can save nearly $28,000 in a decade by buying and keeping your car for 10 years instead of leasing a car every 3 years. And that savings applies to each car you own.² (This calculation also assumes maintenance costs.)

Your savings will vary based on the type of car and its price of course, but buying a car and keeping it for a while after it’s paid off can “yield” handsome dividends.

Getting behind the wheel
It’s really up to your personal preference whether you buy or lease. If you like to rotate your vehicles so you can enjoy a new car every few years and not have to worry so much about maintenance, then leasing may be a better option. However, if you like the idea of not having to make a car payment for a good portion of the life of your car, then buying may be the right choice.

Either way, before you take the keys and drive off the lot, make sure to ask your dealer any questions you have, so you can fully understand all the terms and any underlying costs for your situation.

Dr. Mindy Boxer – 5 Reasons To Get Acupuncture This Fall

Fall is a favorite season for many people. The weather starts to get a little cooler, things begin to slow down and preparations for the holidays are in full swing. For many others, fall is not so festive. Many people get sick during the fall months, allergies can flare up and many don’t like that the hours of sunlight decrease steadily, sometimes leading to seasonal depression.
Here are many reasons to get Acupuncture during the fall.
One of the biggest reasons is to avoid getting sick as the seasons change. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), fall is associated with the Lung and Large Intestine energetic pathways. (the Metal Element).  These two pathways work symbiotically to control the Immune System from both the inside and outside of your body. And, if you take good care of these energetic pathways during the fall, you are bound to feel better throughout the season. But just to be sure, getting regular acupuncture treatments might be a good idea. It is recommended to start a couple of weeks before fall really kicks in.
Autumn is associated with the element of Metal. According to TCM, the element of metal governs the mind, order, stability and organization. As fall approaches, we tend to be more reflective, turning inward and going into hibernation mode. It’s a great time to organize and prepare for the upcoming winter months. Emotionally, fall is associated with sadness and grief. Therefore, as the nights get longer, it is very important to keep the mind clear and let go of your negative emotions. Acupuncture can be a wonderful tool to help ward off depression, sadness and grief, both before and during the months of fall.  Acupuncture treatments help balance moods by regulating hormones in the body.
For those who love the long hours associated with the summer months, fall is not easy to slide into, especially when it comes to sleep. Many people have difficulty going to sleep earlier, which is recommended when the days begin to shorten. This is where acupuncture can be beneficial. Certain Acupuncture points are very effective at calming the mind and helping induce rest and relaxation. This is why so many people who receive regular Acupuncture tend to take a nap while the treatment is taking place.
Getting a handle on stress before the full swing of the holidays hits is always a good idea. Acupuncture can help with that too. Acupuncture treatments are very relaxing for the majority of people. Around the holidays, people experience high levels of stress.  But receiving regular Acupuncture treatments ahead of the holidays, will allow for a smooth holiday season.
Lastly, Acupuncture can help control, or at least tone down the Allergy flare ups that frequently occur during the fall. This goes back to how Acupuncture works on the Immune System. But many people who suffer from allergies only experience minor symptoms, like a runny nose and watery, itchy eyes. A few little needles can help tremendously with allergy symptoms.
So what are you waiting for?

Netanyahu Takes First Ride on Speed Rail from Yerushalayim to Ben Gurion

YERUSHALAYIM –

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu hailed the first test run of the high-speed rail link from Yerushalayim to Ben Gurion airport as “an historic moment” on Thursday, but critics were underwhelmed, sourly noting the long delays in construction, which is still not finished.

PM Netanyahu and Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz toured the Yitzhak Navon railway station in Yerushalayim and took an inaugural ride from the capital to the airport.

During the trip, Israel Railways Chairman Dan Harel and Israel Railways Director-General Shahar Ayalon briefed the Prime Minister “on the complexity of the project, and updated him on the work that still needs to be done ahead of the opening of the line,” according to an official statement.

This was a polite way of saying what the Israeli media said rather more bluntly: that the great day came some seventeen years after construction began and five months after the last deadline.

And that officials declined to say when the remainder of the route would be fully completed.

MK Eitan Cabel (Zionist Camp) likewise saw the photo-op as premature and politically motivated.

“A celebratory inauguration for a half-finished project,” said Cabel. “The main thing is that Netanyahu will take credit for a project that is far from finished, suitably only a moment before elections.”

Actually, elections are still months away.

Meanwhile, PM Netanyahu offered praise and nostalgia: “This is an historic moment, and I use that term carefully, but I have always believed that it is possible to link Yerushalayim to the national railway network and not via the old Turkish route that I rode on as a boy and a youth. And here, the moment has arrived after a great effort by the Government of Israel, the Transportation Ministry and all of the elements who worked on it. This truly is a new era. I can only ask that you join the ride and see for yourselves.”

He continued: “When I was a boy we used to sing ‘The Train Flew between the Mountains and the Hills’ and today I have the special pleasure of being on a train that flies through the mountains and the hills, and will reach Tel Aviv in the record time of about 30 minutes. This is a new era for Yerushalayim and the State of Israel. Come and join [the ride].”

According to current plans, initially, two trains per hour will run between Yerushalayim and Ben-Gurion Airport from Sunday to Thursday between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., taking between 20-25 minutes to complete the journey.

Following the partial opening of the new line, passengers will be able to enjoy free journeys from the capital for 90 days, but will need to order online from a limited number of train tickets in advance and be in possession of a Rav-Kav travel card. Only 400 tickets will be available for each train.

Once complete, the new railway line will complement the existing, slower railway from Tel Aviv to Yerushalayim.

Trains traveling on the 19th-century Ottoman-built railway take approximately 80 minutes to arrive at their final destination at Yerushalayim’s Malha railway station, far from the city center. Many commuters have therefore opted to travel by car or bus.

Murderer’s son leads Temple Mount riots

Shin Bet. police uncover group of young Arabs from eastern Jerusalem who led violent confrontations on the Temple Mount.

Arutz Sheva Staff, 20/09/18

Recently, Shin Bet interrogators, together with the Israel Police, uncovered a network of Arab youths, residents of Israel from eastern Jerusalem, who led violent confrontations on the Temple Mount at the end of July this year after Friday prayers.

In addition, a squad of activists who purchased firecrackers were discovered and later smuggled into the Temple Mount to attack the security forces outside the mountain area at the end of Friday prayers on the Mount. Following the severe incident, four policemen were injured, and as a result of the violent incidents, the Temple Mount was closed for several hours.

In the course of interrogations by the Shin Bet and the police, Ahmed Abu Tzibah, a Hamas terrorist from Kafr Aqab, who had been released a few months earlier, was found to have began the group after being sentenced to eight months in prison for his activities in the terrorist organization Shabab al-Aqsa.

Tzibah is the son of Mesbah Abu Tzibh, who carried out a deadly shooting attack in October 2016 in Jerusalem, during which Livneh Malihi and the Yossi Kirma were murdered.

The investigation revealed that Tzibah was the one who led the violent event, transferred the funding for the fireworks, and instructed to recruit additional activists to riot on the Temple Mount, as well as fire the flares at the Israeli forces.

Rashid Rashak, a Hamas terrorist with an Israeli identity card, was arrested along with his wife, who served between 14 and 16 years in prison for his involvement in a stabbing attack. Rashid recruited activists and instructed them how to take part in the event. In the weeks following the clashes, Rashid also instigated a similar violent incident on the Temple Mount, but unsuccessfully, due to the security forces’ preventive activity.

Together with the two, eight other residents of eastern Jerusalem were arrested, facing legal proceedings for involvement in the violent incident on the Temple Mount, as well as other violent incidents in eastern Jerusalem.

New Landslide Kills 21 People, Buries Houses in Philippines

NAGA, Philippines (AP) – A massive landslide buried dozens of homes near a central Philippine mountain Thursday, killing at least 21 people and sending rescuers scrambling to find survivors after some sent text messages pleading for help.

The slide surged down on about 30 houses in two rural villages after daybreak in Naga city in Cebu Province, city police chief Roderick Gonzales said by telephone as he helped supervise the search and rescue. Seven injured villagers were rescued from the huge mound of earth and debris.

Some victims managed to send messages after the landslide hit, Gonzales said, adding that elderly women and a child were among the dead.

Naga city Mayor Kristine Vanessa Chiong said at least 64 people remained missing.

“We’re really hoping we can still recover them alive,” she said.

The landslide hit while several northern Philippine provinces are still dealing with deaths and widespread damage wrought by Typhoon Mangkhut, which pummeled the agricultural region Saturday and left at least 88 people dead and more than 60 missing. A massive search is still underway for dozens of people feared dead after landslides in the gold-mining town of Itogon in the north.

Cebu Province was not directly hit by Mangkhut but the massive typhoon intensified monsoon rains across a large part of the archipelago, including the central region where Naga city lies, about 355 miles southeast of Manila.

Rescuers were treading carefully in small groups on the unstable ground to avoid further casualties.

“We’re running out of time. The ground in the area is still vibrating. We’re striking a balance between intensifying our rescue efforts and ensuring the safety of our rescuers,” Naga city Councilor Carmelino Cruz said by phone.

It’s not clear what set off the landslide, but some residents blamed limestone quarries, which they suspect may have caused cracks in the mountainside facing their villages.

The nearest quarry was abandoned about a year ago, but another government-authorized quarry is still being operated not far away, and villagers also profit from the limestone business, said Angeline Templo, an assistant to the mayor.

The Philippines is one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries. It is lashed by about 20 storms each year and is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire” that is vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Poverty has forced many to live on or near volcanoes, steep mountains and storm-vulnerable coasts, often leading to disasters.
