Accompanied by Hundreds of Israelis, Terror Victim’s Parents Visit Temple Mount

Written by Michael Bachner/TPS on July 12, 2016

Jerusalem (TPS) — Hundreds of Jews gathered in Jerusalem’s Old City on Tuesday morning to visit the Temple Mount. They came to accompany the parents of Hallel Yaffa Ariel, the 13-year-old girl who was murdered in her bed in Kiryat Arba on June 30 by a 17-year-old Palestinian terrorist.

“We are glad that the nation of Israel has contacted us and is showing support,” said Rena Ariel, Hallel’s mother. “Having the days go by [without Hallel] is hard for us.”

Rena and her husband Amichai, advocates for Jewish access and prayer rights on the Temple Mount, organized the visit in their daughter’s memory. Hallel’s father, Amichai, said, “Once we understand our role on the Temple Mount, we will be able to drive away the darkness.”

“This is not a day of sadness. It is a day of joy,” Hallel’s aunt said. “This is not a day of mourning and destruction, but of rebuilding and anticipating redemption.”

Although the Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism, access to it is severely restricted for Jews. The site is also the third holiest site for Muslims, who call it Haram al-Sharif (The Noble Sanctuary) or the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Some Palestinian reports described Tuesday’s event as “a mass invasion of Al-Aqsa by Israeli settlers.”

Police closed several entry gates to the Temple Mount during the visit, restricting Muslim access. Some Muslims who were on the Temple Mount followed the Jewish group, filming them and shouting “Allahu Akbar” (Arabic for “God is great”) at them.

Police arrested four Jews during the visit for allegedly violating the rules for non-Muslims visiting the Temple Mount. These rules include a prohibition on carrying religious articles, praying, or appearing to be praying.

Some Jews were turned away for having violated these rules on previous visits. Several Knesset members were also barred entry because of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s decision to ban all MKs from entering the Temple Mount.

A Temple Mount activist was also arrested on Tuesday for publishing a Facebook photo of himself with an Israeli flag on the Temple Mount. Since Israeli flags are not allowed there, it appears that the photograph was manipulated using image-manipulation software.

Attorney Rehavia Piltz, who is representing the activist on behalf of the Honenu legal organization, said, “It is a terrible shame that the police are not permitting Hallel a dignified memorial after having failed to prevent her murder. Today marks a new peak in the persecution of Temple Mount activists.”

Families of Victims of Palestinian Terrorism File Billion-Dollar Lawsuit Against Facebook

Written by Tzvi Lev/TPS on July 11, 2016

A group of 11 families of terror victims filed a lawsuit against Facebook in New York on Monday, arguing that the continued use of the site by Palestinian terror organizations violates US anti-terrorism laws. They are demanding USD 1 billion in damages.

“Facebook has been allowing Hamas to operate freely on its platform for a very long time and that resulted in the terror attack that killed my father and the other plaintiffs’ families,” said Micah Lakin-Avni, whose father was killed in a terror attack in October.  “We are seeking damages from Facebook for allowing Hamas to operate so freely and offensively.”

Israeli law firm Shurat HaDin is representing the families, and Director Nitsana Darshan-Leitner believes that Facebook is violating the 1992 Anti-Terror Act, which forbids the granting of any support to terror groups and permits Americans injured in overseas terror attacks to pursue legal action in the United States.

”Hamas is a recognized terror organization, and the 1992 ATA law prohibits it from being granted any assistance,” she contended. “Just as it is prohibited for a bank to open an account for terrorists, Facebook is prohibited from opening pages supporting this organization. Hamas should not be able to use Facebook’s platform to transmit messages or spread its incitement and ideology.”

Facebook responded that it “does not comment on any issue currently subject to legal procedure.” A Facebook spokesperson added to Tazpit Press Service (TPS) that the company “wants people to feel safe when using Facebook. There is no place for content encouraging violence, direct threats, terrorism or hate speech on Facebook.”

“We have a set of Community Standards to help people understand what is allowed on Facebook, and we urge people to use our reporting tools if they find content that they believe violates our standards so we can investigate and take swift action,” the spokesperson continued.

The lawsuit is not the first to accuse Facebook of aiding terrorism. A still-pending class action lawsuit was filed against Facebook in 2015 on behalf of 20,000 Israelis calling for it to take down posts that called for the murder of Jews.

The plaintiffs include the families of Taylor Force—an American military veteran killed in March, Naftali Fraenkel—one of the three boys kidnapped and killed in 2014, and Richard Lakin—who was killed in October in Jerusalem.

Delegation Urges Senate to Continue Support For Israel’s Missile Defense Systems

In Shadow of White House Opposition, Delegation Urges Senate to Continue Support For Israel’s Missile Defense Systems

Recently, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved, in a 30-0 bipartisan vote, $600 million in funding toward Israeli missile defense programs, mandating that Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge must be maintained. The proposed bill will fund the short- range Iron Dome missile program, and long-range missile projects including Arrow Weapon System, and David’s Sling anti- missile program. This funding is part of a $576 billion Defense Appropriations bill, which was passed with a wide, bipartisan majority. However, the Obama administration, which has proposed missile defense funding at a much lower number, pushed back, threatening to veto the bill.
In light of this pushback from the Obama administration, a key delegation, part of theU.S.-Israeli Security Alliance, met with U.S. Senators who were instrumental in the $600 Million appropriation for Israel’s defense.
“The main purpose of our coming here today,” explained co-chair Joseph B. Stamm, “is to thank the group of bipartisan senators who have been instrumental in the passage of this legislation.”
The delegation wanted to “make sure that the Senate stays on top of it, recognizing that this is a two-way relationship regarding bilateral trade,” said co-chair Leon Goldenberg. Aside from the moral responsibility to Israel, Leon Goldenberg wanted to emphasize the overall robust partnership between the two countries. He stated, “the American defense establishment does not only support Israeli missile defense capabilities and innovation, but also needs and appreciates it. The law states that 75 percent of the money spent in cooperation with Israel on missile defense must be spent in the U.S. Therefore, the U.S. not only benefits from Israeli technology, but U.S. defense contractors also benefit by association.”
Goldenberg further explained: “Israel is now the 23rd largest trader with the United States. There is almost 40 billion dollars in trading going back and forth. There are a quarter of a million jobs in the US tied into Israeli companies. Israel is the 5th largest investor in the United States – ahead of China. It’s not just about helping Israel, but it is also about how America benefits.”
Co-chair Sol Goldner added: “It’s a two-way street. The United States benefits as well from the technology and the money that’s spent here for the procurement.”
“That’s a very good list of reasons to continue doing what we’re doing,” Senator Thad Cochran, Chairman of the Full Appropriations Committee, asserted in response to Leon Goldberg’s acute comments regarding the U.S. and Israel’s bilateral trade relations.
In further agreement, Senator Lindsey Graham, keenly stated: “Helping Israel is helping ourselves.” As Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, Lindsey Graham “is in a key position to understand the need to support our allies, especially the state of Israel,” Ezra Friedlander, CEO of The Friedlander Group, explained.
Senator John Boozman shared similar sentiments: “The need to bond with Israel is more important than ever.” The U.S. and Israel have such an important friendship, andSenator Kirsten Gillibrand – who, in a bipartisan fashion, authored and secured a letter urging the Appropriations Committee to completely fund the $600 million – argued that it is an “unbreakable bond, something we rely on not only for national security, but also for economic growth. We are fundamentally tied. Their well-being is our well-being.”
After visiting an Iron Dome site, Senator James Lankford noted, “there are areas we could share information back and forth and be mutual accessible to each other.” In regards to the Iron Dome missile program, Senator Thad Cochran encourages Congress to keep doing what they’re doing: “I think we’ve done very well in supporting the Iron Dome, so don’t mess it up,” he said.
“If you’re going to test the system, our friends in Israel have tested it with great success, and it only gets better,” said Senator Roy Blunt, describing this bill as one he very much cares about. “We believe Israel knows on its own what’s best for itself,” explained Sergio Gor, Senator Rand Paul‘s (R-KY) Communication Advisor. “Last year [Senator Paul] introduced legislation to defund the Palestine authority unless they recognize Israel as a Jewish state.”
Bukharian Chief Rabbi Itzhak Yehoshua has high hopes the administration will pass the bill, noting, “The U.S. has introduced freedom to the world and has always supported Israel which is the only democracy in the Middle East.”
Thanking the delegates for their advocacy, Senator David Vitter asserted: “I’m a proud thousand percent supporter of Israel… and that will continue, but we always need to keep enlarging that root.”
Congressman Ed Royce, chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, disclosed why he’s such a strong supporter of Israel. Mr. Goldenberg says it over, “His father liberated Dachau and he took pictures. And he gave those pictures his son, ‘one day they are going to deny all this, here are the pictures that I took.'”
Ultimately, the poignant comment of Ezra Friedlander, who is behind the efforts of the U.S.- Israeli Security Alliance, holds true: the Israel-U.S. alliance “reminds us that at the end of the day, we all need each other.”

Netanyahu Discusses Mideast Peace and Security With Former British PM and Quartet Envoy Tony Blair

Written by Jonathan Benedek/TPS on July 11, 2016

Jerusalem (TPS) – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed former British Prime Minister Tony Blair to Jerusalem on Monday morning before holding a joint meeting to discuss regional security and prospects for Middle East peace.

“You’ve been a great help for all of us trying to move forward in the cause of peace and security in the Middle East and I’m very grateful to you for that,” Netanyahu told Blair.

Tony Blair has been significantly involved in the Middle East peace process, particularly since 2007 when he assumed the role as envoy for the Middle East Quartet. The Quartet, which is comprised of the United States, the European Union, the United Nations, and Russia, was formed in 2002 at the height of tensions during the Second Intifada, in an effort to bring Israel and the Palestinian Authority back to negotiations.

Tony Blair resigned from his post as the Quartet’s envoy in May of 2015 in order to assume an alternative role, albeit an informal one, in helping to bring about a final settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Blair launched an initiative of his own this past November in which he said that he would “work through this Initiative for the Middle East, as I call it, to try and push and promote a political process in the framework of the Arab peace initiative.”

Blair, whose meeting with Netanyahu follows that of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry yesterday, implicitly expressed hope that Egypt’s efforts would bear fruit.

“I think yesterday’s visit was extremely important and significant and I hope this can offer new opportunities for the future for peace in the region and stability in the region,” said Blair.

Judea and Samaria, Route 60 (TPS) – An Israeli man was killed in a terrorist drive-by shooting on Friday, while driving with his family from their home in the Jewish community of Otniel in the Har Hevron Regional Council. The deceased was identified by the Har Hevron Regional Council Spokesperson as 48-year-old Rabbi Michael (Miki) Mark.

Mark was driving with his wife, Chava Rachel,  who is in critical condition, and his daughter Tehila (14) and son Pdaia (15), who were also injured in the shooting. Miki and Chava Rachel’s eight other children were at home during the incident and were notified of their father”s death by the authorities.

“Shortly after 3 p.m., a shooting occurred on Route 60, near the Palestinian village of Fawwar. As a result of the shooting one of the four family members in the car was killed. The other three sustained injuries are were evacuated to a hospital. IDF forces are scouring the area and setting up roadblocks in order to locate the shooters,” stated the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.

According to the Har Hevron Regional Council spokesperson, the family was driving on Route 60 from their home in Otniel in the direction of Beit Haggai, when a Palestinian vehicle overtook them and its passenger opened fire at the Israeli car.

Magen David Adom Paramedics pronounced the 48-year-old father dead on the scene, and began the evacuation of the rest of the family to the Hadassah Ein Karem Medical center in Jerusalem.

“A woman in her 30’s sustained serious head trauma and is in a critical condition, she is currently on life-support. A 14-year-old girl sustained moderate to serious abominable injury and a 15-year-old boy sustained light injury only. All three victims arrived safely to the Hadassah Ein Karem Trauma Ward and are currently being treated,” stated Hadar Elboim, the Hadassah Medical Center Spokesperson.

Following the evacuation of the victims, the Judea and Samaria District Police has announced the closing of the Route 60 segment where the shooting attack occurred in order to allow for a forensic investigation of the scene. IDF soldiers began scouring the region on foot and in vehicles in an attempt to locate the fleeing terrorists.

According to a Har Hevron Region Security official, the first report to the emergency authorities was made by a Palestinian who witnessed the event. “The man’s wife preformed CPR on the wounded teenage girl, and Palestinian Red Crescent paramedics also provided help until Israeli emergency services arrived on the scene,” said the Security official.

In an angry response to the deadly attack, dozens of Jewish residents of the  nearby communities of the har Hevron region came out to Route 60 in order to prevent Palestinian’s access to the road.

Statement by PM Netanyahu Following Terrorist Attack in Kiryat Arba

Statement by PM Netanyahu Following Terrorist Attack in Kiryat Arba

This morning a terrorist sneaked into the bedroom of a 13-year-old girl, Hallel-Yaffa Ariel. He murdered young Hallel in cold blood. A picture of her blood stained room is almost too hard to see. There’s a teddy bear still on her bed, a red beanbag chair, some pictures on the wall, shoes tightly packed in a bin next to her bunk bed.

Why would any person do this?

You don’t murder a sleeping child for peace. You don’t slit a little girl’s throat to protest a policy you don’t like.

You do this because you’ve been brainwashed. You’ve been brainwashed by a warped ideology that teaches you that this child isn’t human.

We will not let barbarism defeat humanity.

There’s no middle ground between beautiful Hallel and her unspeakably evil murderer.

Today, each of us is going to fight back.

I ask you to walk into your child’s bedroom before they go to sleep. I ask you to hug them. I ask you to kiss them. Teach them that the values that Hallel’s murderer most detested – freedom, diversity, pluralism – will never die; we’ll always hold them dear. Tell them that we will never let fear, evil and terror triumph; that we will always stand for justice. And this is how we will fight back. We fight back first by fighting back, fighting the terrorists, fighting their backers, fighting those who incite for such murder, whether in Hebron or in Orlando, or in Berlin, or in Ankara, or in Belgium, anywhere. We fight back by making sure that our collective moral compass doesn’t waver even a millimeter.

Today we will cherish Hallel’s memory. We will defend and honor her dignity by redoubling our efforts around the world to defeat the scourge of radical Islamist terror.

May Hallel’s memory forever be a blessing.

13-Year-Old Jewish Girl Stabbed to Death By Palestinian Terrorist While Asleep in Home

Written by Jonathan Benedek/TPS on June 30, 2016

A 13-year-old Israeli girl was murdered  Thursday morning by a Palestinian terrorist who stabbed her in her bed in the community of Kiryat Arba, near Hebron.

The terrorist breached the community’s security fence just before 9 a.m. and entered the home of the Ariel family, stabbing the sleeping daughter, Hallel Yaffa, multiple times in her bed. Hallel, an eighth-grader, died of her wounds soon afterward.

The terrorist, 17-year-old Mohammed Tarayra from the nearby Palestinian town of Bani Na’im, east of Hebron, was killed by security forces at the scene.

A 31-year-old local security volunteer who attempted to subdue the terrorist was also stabbed, as well as shot inadvertently by Israeli security forces. His wounds are moderate to severe.

“My daughter was sleeping, calm and peaceful, and a terrorist just got into her bed and murdered her,” Hallel’s mother, Rina, told Israeli media, weeping. “I ask that everyone consider our pain, that you come to console us, come to encourage us, to say that Kiryat Arba is ours and is a place where it’s possible to live and not die, to continue with our love for the place and the land.”

“We received a call about a terror attack in Kiryat Arba, and we arrived there and saw two wounded victims, including a girl who was about 14 or 15 years old,” Magen David Adom paramedic Devorah Aviad told Tazpit Press Service (TPS). “She was very seriously wounded from a number of injuries in the center of her body.”

“Security officials saw movement on the fence in the neighborhood of Harsina, we recognized that someone passed the fence,” a security official told TPS news. “Security officials of the neighborhood arrived, recognized the terrorist next to the home and inside the house we found the girl stabbed.”

Hallel Yaffa Ariel was rushed to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem where she later died of her wounds.

The second victim, in moderate to severe condition, was transferred to the trauma center at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center where he is being treated for gunshot wounds in both the upper body and legs, the hospital announced.

Since the attack, the village of Bani Na’im has been placed under quarantine.

“In the coming hours, the IDF is preparing to carry out a full closure on the village of Bani Na’im where the terrorist who carried out the terrorist attack in Kiryat Arba came from,” the Israeli military announced. “Additionally, IDF forces are currently operating in the village and entering the house of the terrorist for the purposes of investigating.”

“We are deeply hurt and share the pain of the Ariel family,” said the local Hebron Council in a statement following the attack, placing the blame on the Palestinian Authority. “We will rise up stronger, resolute and with faith that justice will prevail.”

The victim was related to Uri Ariel, Israel’s minister of agriculture and rural development, who tweeted: “Arab terror has struck our family, but the response must be national. Dettering terrorists, redoubling building and planting in Judea and Samaria, and applying Israeli sovereignty to Area C.”

We may not all look the same, live in the same place or engage in the same level of religious observance, but deep down inside, the Jewish nation shares a common bond that unites us, that transcends distance and breaks boundaries. WeR1 shatters the differences that divide us, focusing on the unshakeable connection shared by members of the Jewish nation all across the globe.

“So many choose to focus on what sets people apart, but the truth is that our commonalities are far greater than our differences,” observed director Daniel Finkelman.

WeR1 follows the story of two characters who could be every man or every woman. Located in Israel and New York each leads a vastly different life, yet feels an inexorable pull that drives them ever higher, an unidentified longing for something indefinable but exalted. Set against a backdrop of music performed by Israeli superstar Gad Elbaz, Australian singer songwriter DeScribe, American rapper Nissim, French singer Israel Alliel, and British performer Refael Mirila, WeR1 is journey to the highest heights, attainable only through unity.

Bringing together a significant talent pool that includes film production by Daniel Finkelman and Elan Cohen, and music and lyrics by Los Angeles platinum songwriter and producer DK Benjamin, WeR1 is an inspiring musical triumph that takes viewers on a journey from London to Lyon to Tel Aviv and New York. Filling the heart and warming the soul, WeR1, a project of Kesher Yehudi – an organization which bridges the gap between secular and religious Jews – is a reminder to us all that now, as always, we are truly one nation with one heart.

Israeli Leaders Send Condolences to Turkey Over Airport Terror Attack

Written by Michael Bachner/TPS on June 29, 2016

Jerusalem (TPS) – The deadly terror attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport on Tuesday evening has drawn political reactions worldwide, including from many Israeli political figures, some of whom took the opportunity on Wednesday to link the attack with the reconciliation deal between the two countries that was approved on the same day.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement on Wednesday “strongly condemning” the terror attack, adding that “all the civilized peoples must stand together to fight the disease of terror.”

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin sent his condolences to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, adding that the normalization would help both parties join forces against global terrorism.

“This cowardly, murderous act is an example of the most vitriolic hatred the like of which we are sadly seeing across our region and the entire world today,” Rivlin wrote in a letter to Erdogan. “I take this opportunity to welcome the chance to renew our good relationship, especially because our strengthened dialogue will greatly aid in our joint efforts against this threat.”

A similar statement was made by Dore Gold, Director-General of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who sent his “deep sympathy to the people of Turkey” on Twitter, and added that “together, with a new chapter in our relations, we can have a more effective fight on terror.”

The triple suicide bombing and gun attack was carried out in the bustling airport and left at least 41 dead, including 13 foreigners, and 239 injured. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim blamed the attack on the Islamic State terror organization, also known as ISIS. Turkey declared Wednesday a national day of mourning.

MK Ksenia Svetlova of the Zionist Union shared her sadness and concern for the victims, as well as her support for a “global” response to radical Islamic terrorism.

“My thoughts are with the people at the explosion. I just returned from there two days ago,” she wrote on Twitter immediately after the attack. “The threat of radical Islamic terrorism is global,” she added, “and so should be a reaction to it. We need widespread intelligence collaborations and to acknowledge the danger of religious extremism.”

Israeli Parliament Speaker Yuli Edelstein sent a condolence letter to his Turkish counterpart Ismail Kahraman. ”On behalf of all the Knesset members I would like to express our deep shock and outrage over the vile terror attack at the Ataturk airport yesterday,” he wrote.

“Unfortunately, Turkey has fallen victim to murderous terror attacks by extremists who wish to disrupt normal civic life, spread fear and terror in the name of God to promote their deadly goals,” added Edelstein. “At this dire hour for Turkey we wish to express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery to the wounded.”

MK Yair Lapid reacted to the attack by criticizing the international responses to it. “It is time for the world to wake up. Israel is still internationally condemned again and again, but any condemnation of Islamic violence is avoided like fire,” he said.

Shimon Peres, a former Israeli president and prime minister, called on world leaders to join forces against the terror threat.

“Anyone who chooses to turn to terrorism should know that there will be serious consequences,” he said in a statement Wednesday morning. “I urge all of the world’s leaders to join hands in the stern and uncompromising war against terrorism and hatred of ‘the other’.”
