The Shmuz on the Parsha: Parshas Eikev

Eikev 5775

Limiting Beliefs
Parshas Eikev

“And now Yisroel, what is HASHEM, your G-d asking of you? Merely to fear HASHEM, to go in all of His ways, to love Him, and serve Him with all of your heart and soul.” — Devarim 10:12

In this posuk, Moshe Rabbeinu set before the Jewish people the categories of human growth and accomplishments.

1. To fear HASHEM
2. To go in all of His ways.
3. To love HASHEM.
4. To serve Him with all of you heart and your soul.

Each category is a world in and of itself and would take man a lifetime to accomplish. Together these four groupings comprise all of service to HASHEM and are the measure of the perfection of the human.

Yet amazingly, when Moshe introduces these concepts to the Jewish nation, he begins with an expression of, “What does HASHEM ask from you but this?” It’s as if to imply that it is but a small request.

The Gemara in Brachos is troubled by this and asks, “Is fear of HASHEM a small thing?” The Gemara answers, “Yes, to Moshe it was a small thing. To a poor man, even small items seem valuable. However, to a wealthy man even vast sums seem small.” Since Moshe had attained such spiritual perfection, these things seemed simple to him; hence, he used the expression, “What does HASHEM want from you but this?”

Why would Moshe Rabbeinu compare himself to the average person?
The difficulty with this Gemara is that it implies that Moshe was using himself as the standard of measurement for the average person. It’s as if he were implying, “If I can reach this, then so can you.” Yet we know that Moshe towered over every other human ever created. He reached dizzying heights of perfection that no other human before or after will attain. After 80 years of unparalleled growth, he spent 40 days without food, drink, or sleep, and was taught the entire Torah by HASHEM. For the next forty years, he was engaged in teaching that Torah to the Jewish people. At this point in his life, he is a giant of a man, and in no way can he be compared to the typical person. So while these things may not have seemed lofty to him, to his audience they were gargantuan! Why would Moshe use his own experiences as the measuring rod against which the average person should compare himself?

The answer to this question is based on a different perspective on human capacity. To gain that viewpoint, let us take a look at an interesting phenomenon.
Being tied to a peg in the ground
In parts of Asia, the elephant remains the beast of choice for lugging heavy loads. As part of its work day, an adult elephant will pull logs weighing thousands of pounds through long stretches of forest undergrowth. Yet at night, that same elephant will be controlled by being tied to a small peg in the ground.

While it would be clear to you and me that a 14,000 pound creature can easily break away from the light ropes holding it, the reality is that it cannot. It cannot escape — not because it isn’t motivated, and not because it doesn’t want to, but because in the elephant’s understanding, it just can’t be done.

In this part of the world, shortly after birth, the baby elephant is tied to a peg in the ground. At that stage in its development, it might weigh 250 pounds and isn’t strong enough to break the rope that holds it. From that point forward, every day of its life, the elephant will be tied to that peg in the ground. Even when the animal has reached maturity and will be called upon to lug felled trees weighing over 4,000 pounds, it will remain tied to a small peg. The understanding is firmly fixed in its mind: it can’t escape.

Limiting beliefs
Many times we are tied to pegs in the ground. There are many situations where we don’t reach up for greatness because we are contained — not by ropes, but by limiting beliefs that prevent us from breaking away from the habits and lifestyle choices that stunt our growth.

Moshe Rabbeinu was providing an invaluable lesson to us. He was demonstrating the capacity of the human. He was showing us how great a person can be. At the end of the day, Moshe was made of the same substance as you and I. He was a person with drives, desires, and inclinations. He overcame them. He made himself great. He took the natural strengths and weaknesses that he was given, and by constantly making the right choices, he changed his inner nature. Finally, he reached the point that he could look at the absolute heights of perfection and say, “So what? This isn’t a big deal. It can easily be done.”

The lesson to us is that we too have that capacity. All of life is but an opportunity to make choices. If from this moment forward, every decision that I made were the proper one, if I were to put away all of my self-interests and ask myself, “What do I think is the right way to act? What do I think HASHEM wants me to do in this situation? Not what do I want, not what do I desire, but what is the proper way?,” I have the intuitive sense to be able to answer correctly and the ability to find the right path.

By attuning myself to that part, and by using role models who reached such plateaus, I too can reach the dizzying heights of greatness for which I was created.

Why is J Street Supporting Iran? The Truth Behind The J Street Mask

Why is J Street Supporting Iran? Whom is J Street Working For?

All major American Jewish organizations strongly oppose the Nuclear deal with Iran which funds and conducts global terrorism. Yet J Street, which claims to be Pro-Israel, will now spend millions of dollars lobbying in favor of the deal.

Since it was founded in 2008, J Street has attracted many supporters within the American Jewish community and on college campuses. The documentary film “The J Street Challenge” explores the phenomenon of J Street, examining and debating J Street’s message and its leaders.

The film presents J Street’s mission and related actions through speeches by J Street leaders and supporters. J Street believes that it is in Israel’s existential interest to make peace with the Palestinians, and that peace can only come through the creation of a Palestinian state. To achieve a two state solution, Israel must make painful territorial concessions. J Street believes that American foreign policy must take an assertive approach in pressuring Israel and the Palestinian to achieve peace. According to J Street, Israel is mostly to blame for the lack of peace because of its unwillingness to give up land necessary for the creation of a viable Palestinian state. J Street’s lobbying efforts have focused on Congress, the U.S government and on the American Jewish community, especially on college campus and within Jewish institutions. These lobbying efforts are mostly designed to put pressure on the Israeli government.

The film presents comments and analyses from noted academics and writers who have challenged J Street’s mission and tactics. These critics assert that J Street disproportionally blames Israel for the lack of peace and ignores the vicious hatred and incitement promoted by the Palestinian leadership. J Street also seems to ignore the historical context of the conflict, with ongoing hostility and existential threats to the Jewish State from neighboring countries. The critics also question the appropriateness of a political lobby that wishes to circumvent the Israeli electorate and the country’s democracy by seeking to have the U.S government impose a solution. In pursuing its political agenda, J Street has divided the Jewish community and weakened communal support for Israel.

The film investigates the background of J Street and its founders, J Street’s organizational funding, and its alliances with organizations and individuals who are known to be hostile to the Jewish state.

“J Street Challenge” adds an important voice to the American Jewish debate about the American Jewish community’s role in dealing with the Arab-Israel conflict.

Although some organizations have tried to deny J Street a voice in the community, J Street’s proactive outreach has been very successful in allowing it to present its view in synagogues and Jewish community centers. Jewish leaders have always valued the exchange of views and vigorous debate within the community, with the understanding that no one had a monopoly on the truth and the community greatly benefits from a diversity of views and discussions.

As Jeremy Ben- Ami, founder and Executive Director of J street, has correctly noted:

“In keeping with our tradition, we should work through our differences with respect, vibrant discussion, and open dialogue.”

It is in this spirit that “The J Street Challenge” was produced. The film’s goals are to enlarge the discussion, to educate the community about the challenges it faces both from within and from without.

The book not slated to be released until August 17th, has already climbed to the number one hot title in new books on Judaism and history on Amazon.

The book tells the story how the Rebbe transformed the agenda of modern Jewry, moving Chabad from a small Chassidic group to the largest Jewish organization in the world. It promises to follow in the wake of last year’s bestsellers on the Rebbe as the new Chabad book. Rabbi Eliezrie focused in his remarks on six crucial ideas that formed the core of the revolution the Rebbe brought the Jewish world. BTM’s Crowning Reception Highlights  Its Unique and Successful Seventh Year!

On Thursday,  Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, June 18, 2015, Yeshivas Bais Toras Menachem (BTM) held its annual Gala Tribute Graduation, celebrating, b’chasdei Hashem, the unique institution of higher learning’s completion of its seventh successful year. The beautiful affair was graciously hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Yisroel Finer in their elegant and warm home. The spotlight shone brightly on  each and every one of its bachurim as each were bestowed distinctive awards and certificates in accordance with their various achievements. This was truly a unique event accompanied with music, niggun and words from the heart and mind; an evening filled with nachas and pride for all.

There were Smicha certificates for the ‘stars of the evening’, those who successfully completed the four chlaokim or sections, of the Code of Jewish Law required for Rabbinical Ordination. This milestone was the result of countless hours of study under the thorough and patient tutelage of HaRav Levi Chazan, our Smicha Maggid Shiur and a noted Talmud Chacham in our community.

The designated “testing Rav” for the specialized Smicha program is the renowned and widely respected Posek, and Av Bais Din D’kehilla of Los Angeles, Harav Elchanan Tauber. Rabbi Tauber, who has been a strong proponent of the program since its inception, has expressed how impressed he has been by BTM’s students’ overall dedication to their studies and their fine grasp of the material.

One of the goals of BTM is empowering its students with life skills needed for gainful employment or in preparation for higher university studies. To this end, Bochurim attend one of several secular learning tracks designed by BTM. Accomplishments in these fields were also given their just recognition at the reception. While some completed a course in math and english fundamentals and others their GED certificates, the highest level of excellence were those who graduated, either fully or partially, from ORT College of Los Angeles with an AA degree in Business Management.

The evening was the crowning event to cap off a very special, unique and successful seventh year of BTM’s program. One could truly witness the expression “Kol shvi’in chavivin” (Whatever is ‘associated’ with the number seven is dear.) Throughout the year, the achdus amongst the bachurim was remarkable as they melded together like a family unit. In addition to their rewarding studies, they had the opportunity to ask any questions they wanted at a weekly Q & A session, which led to many meaningful and thought provoking discussion (some even life altering). Something new was a mini-lecture series about preparation for Shidduchim and marriage, given by a noted Shadchan and Shidduch coach.

Of course, the bachurim got to enjoy a wide range of guest lectures, farbrengens with chosheve members of Anash, barbecues, hikes, trips and Shabbatons throughout Southern and Northern California.

The BTM dormitory is a very comfortable house in close proximity to the host shul, Congregation Levi Yitzchok, which once again welcomed the boys warmly into the Los Angeles Anash community. Wholesome balanced  meals, as well as time for athletics and other physical exercise have been hallmarks of the yeshiva since its inception, as the overall gashmius of BTM provides the proper balanced environment for ruchniusdik and social growth.

BTM’s success is grounded upon its dedicated and talented staff who give their all to educate and inspire. In addition to R. Chazan, our Rebbeim were R. Heshy Mishulovin, R. Aryeh Erlich, R. Moshe Hildeshaim and R. Aryeh Hoffman. The Pre-GED and GED teachers were R. Hertzy Richler and Mr. Yonatan Amzalog. ORT business management instructor was Dr. Denise Kotler.
