Wow! Ohad, Lemmer, Roth, Abramson, & Israeli Philharmonic orchestra

0

TEL AVIV- In the cultural center in Tel Aviv there was a very special, sold out concert. Under the context of arranging an ensemble of Israeli Chazzanim from the past “Yovel”, the Israeli Philharmonic orchestra performed for the first time ever-the best of R’ Shlomo Carlebach‘s songs. Songs like “Haneshama Lach”, “Lecha Dodi”, “Mimkomcha”, “Im Eshkacheich”, “Gam Ki Eilech”, and more, have become staple content in the Chassidic musical world. Combining those songs with the best singers like Ohad Moskowitz, Avremi Roth, together with Shai Abramson, Chief Chazzan of the IDF, Yanky Lemmer from New York, and Yitzchak Meir, made for one unforgettable performance. The singers were accompanied all night by the “Yovel” and “Zimrat Kah” choirs, and conducted by Maestro Dr. Mordechai Sobol.

Israeli Prime Minister Bakes Matzah for First Time

0
KFAR CHABAD – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took the time to bake some Passover matzah today for his first time when he visited a matzah bakery in Kfar Chabad ahead of the upcoming Passover holiday on Tuesday, April 1.

Local Chabad leaders and rabbis briefed Prime Minister Netanyahu on the preparations to hold Passover seders in approximately 250 Chabad houses throughout Israel as well as approximately 3,000 Chabad houses across the world. They also gave him a tour of the matzah factory and instructed him on how to properly bake the matzah.

The Israeli prime minister noted himself that, “At home, I have eaten Chabad-made matzah for years. Today, for the first time, I am also preparing it myself. I will get to eat the matzah that I have baked this coming Passover and that’s quite moving for me.”

Chabad leaders told Netanyahu that eating the matzah – the traditional unleavened bread eaten on Passover – expresses the belief that the Jewish People can withstand any pressure and asked that he continue to stand up for the freedom of the State of Israel.

Prime Minister Netanyahu, citing the Passover Haggadah added that “In every generation enemies rise up to destroy us but G-d saves us from them. The haggadah mentions four sons – wise, wicked, simple and the one who does not know how to ask – but each one has a Jewish spark and you watch over this Jewish spark.”

He also added that he was looking forward to the Passover holiday, which begins on Monday night, April 14. “I am very excited. I wish the entire Jewish People a Happy Passover.”

Second Temple Period Coffins Containing Jewish Bones plundered; Seized By Authorities

0

JERUSALEM – A number of suspects were apprehended in the early hours on this past Friday (Mar. 28) in a joint operation by inspectors of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) Unit for the Prevention of Antiquities Robbery and police detectives and patrolmen. They were caught while in possession of eleven decorated stone ossuaries – ancient coffins – that the Jewish population used for burial during the Second Temple period, two thousand years ago. Some of the ossuaries still contained the skeletal remains of the deceased.

The suspects, residents of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and the Arab village of Abadiyah in the vicinity of Bethlehem, were caught red-handed as they were closing a deal to sell the ossuaries to Jewish merchants, near the Hizma checkpoint north of Jerusalem. It is suspected the ossuaries were recently looted from an ancient burial cave in the region of Jerusalem. The suspects were arrested on the spot and taken in for questioning. Their remand was extended Friday morning by the Jerusalem Magistrates Court. Antiquities robbery is a serious offense in Israel and is punishable by up to five years imprisonment, and the unlicensed trafficking in antiquities is a criminal offense punishable by a three year prison sentence.

During the Second Temple era the Jewish population used stone ossuaries for secondary burial, and they were very common from the second century BCE until the first century CE. The ossuaries are decorated with typical Jewish symbols, among them the lily flower, the six-petal rosette and other symbols. The decorations adorning the ossuaries were a major element of the Jewish art of the period.

Shallow engravings, etched using a sharp stylus, were found on the sides of two of the seized ossuaries. They cite the names of the deceased whose bones were collected in the coffins. One of the engraved ossuaries that were found bore the name “Ralfin”, written in squared Hebrew script characteristic of the Second Temple period. This name is apparently a Hebraized form of an unusual Roman name. Dr. Eitan Klein, Deputy Director of the Unit for the Prevention of Antiquities Robbery, who examined the ossuaries, said: “This is the first time this name appears on an ossuary from the Land of Israel”. The other ossuary is inscribed in Greek; the wording could not be deciphered. Bellow the inscription is the name “Yo‘azar”, in squared Hebrew script. The name Yo‘azar is a common Jewish name in the Second Temple period, and is found in contemporarily written sources, such as Josephus’ history, and on numerous Jewish ossuaries from this period.

Dr. Eitan Klein continued to state that “these are singular finds. The inscriptions on the ossuaries provide us with additional characters and names from among the Jewish population in the Second Temple period, and the motifs adorning the ossuaries will supplement our knowledge with new information about the world of Jewish art in this period,” Dr. Klein said, “There is no doubt that the ossuaries were recently looted from a magnificent burial cave in Jerusalem. Remnants of paint remained on top of the ossuaries and the containers themselves belong to the group of “magnificent Jerusalem” ossuaries that were manufactured in the city in antiquity”.

The Israel Antiquities Authority reports that the bones found inside the ossuaries will be turned over to the Ministry of Religious Affairs for burial.

Former PM Olmert Convicted

0

TEL AVIV – Just moments ago a court in Tel Aviv convicted former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on an account of bribery he accepted when he was Mayor of Jerusalem.

When relating to the case, Justice David Rosen spoke of a “corrupt political system which has decayed over years… and in which hundreds of thousands of shekels were transferred to elected officials.” The court implied that Olmert lied during his testimony in court.

Olmert received bribes when he was Mayor of Jerusalem in return for the advancement of the Holyand building project, a massive monstrosity of a project which overshadows all of Jerusalem.

10 of the 13 defendants were convicted together with Olmert, including Olmert’s secretary and close confidant Shulah Z|aken who turned on Olmert last week. At the last moment Zaken came forward with new evidence against her former boss. The prosecution requested a two week postponement in order to allow for the investigation to complete and for Zaken to testify against Olmert, but Judge Rosen rejected their request and rendered his verdict today.

Zaken provided the prosecution with a recording in which Olmert allegedly tried to convince her not to sign a state witness deal. The police’s anti-fraud unit is now investigating Olmert, who could be facing charges of obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

Olmert has several other pending court cases against him involving corruption charges.
