Menachem Institute in Tarzana hosted Israel’s Special Forces Paratrooper Izzy Ezagui

0

On Tuesday evening 120 people gathered at Chabad of the Valley’s – Menachem Institute in Tarzana as it hosted Israel’s Special Forces Paratrooper Izzy Ezagui for a lecture… all we can say is wow! The audience fell in love with him within the first few minutes… his delivery… his love of Israel… his sacrifice… his devotion… his perseverance… his heroism… his wonderful sense of humor earned him a very well deserved standing ovation. You could have heard a pin drop in the room as his message penetrated the hearts of the attendees.

He shared his journey over the past five years in the IDF, as well as his reserve service during Operation Pillar of Defense. He also shared what brought him to volunteer and then return to combat after a serious injury. He told his story in a fashion that allowed people to laugh during the darkest moments which kept the mood light.

In addition, Chabad of the Valley secured a second featured speaker who dazzled the audience with amazing stories, insights and reflections of his intimate and personal knowledge of the genesis of modern-day Israel going back to the 1930’s and 1940’s.

Mr. Menachem Aaron Friedman, a dear friend and congregant of Chabad of Tarzana, was there at every important juncture in the formation of modern-day Israel. He served originally under the famous General Orde Wingate, and was an active member and fighter of the Palmach and close friend and confidante to Israeli leaders such as Moshe Dayan, Ezer Weizman, Menachem Begin and his best friend, Yitzchak Shamir.  He was the personal bodyguard of the first Prime Minister of Israel, Mr. David Ben-Gurion.

Mr. Friedman’s legendary experiences coupled with the heroism and struggle of Izzy Ezagui brought comments from the audience that they were, in essence, mirror images of each other.

In conclusion, this amazing evening brought forth the essential truth that, “we will have no future unless the past is viably present.”

Israel based Given Imaging – Which Makes The Pill That Takes Pictures Inside Your Body – Just Sold For $860 Million

0

Israel-based Given Imaging, the maker of a swallowable pill camera called PillCam, agreed to be purchased by Dublin-based Covidien for $30 per share in cash for a total of approximately $860 million, according to a joint announcement released yesterday.

The deal will give health-care products company Covidien additional reach into the gastrointestinal market, which the Irish healthcare company says is a multibillion dollar industry.

The technology behind the PillCam is simple, but fascinating. A patient ingests the PillCam and a teeny tiny camera inside the pill takes images of the small intestine, esophagus and colon and then wirelessly transmits the images for a physician to examine.

Covidien says its purchase of Given Imaging “confirms our leadership in developing less-invasive screening, diagnosis and treatment solutions that can improve patient outcomes and lower healthcare costs,” according to the announcement.

Vaccine Developer Urges Orthodox Jews to Vaccinate

0

A doctor who developed the measles vaccine recently urged members of ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities to vaccinate their children, noting that those communities who refused the 50-year-old vaccine were linked to a third of US measles cases last year.

The Times of Israel reports that Dr. Samuel Katz, the last surviving member of the team of researchers that developed the measles vaccine 50 years ago, believes it is “ludicrous” that parents do not vaccinate their children against measles.

The Center for Disease Control announced on December 5 that there were a total of 175 cases of measles in the United States in 2013, tripling of the annual average.

Fifty-eight of those reported cases were among Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn’s Boro Park and Williamsburg neighborhoods. It was the largest outbreak of measles in the US since 1996. The CDC reported that the cause of the outbreak last spring in Hasidic Brooklyn was an unvaccinated 17-year-old who was infected with the disease after a trip to England.

Among the Brooklyn cases, 21 percent were among children too young to have the MMR vaccine. Twenty-eight cases in Boro Park were members of three extended families who had refused to vaccinate their children.

Every day, 430 children die of measles worldwide. There were an estimated 158,000 measles deaths in 2011.

Dr. Katz Katz was the 2003 winner of the Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal awarded by the Sabin Vaccine Institute for his contributions to vaccine discoveries during his career, and is currently the Chairman Emeritus of Pediatrics at Duke University.

The Video That’s Driving the Palestinians Crazy!

0

In response to the video release, Saeb Erekat, representing the Palestinian Authority, put out a two page official press release, condemning the alleged “lies and distortions” of the video. In actuality, Erekat did not respond to any of the factual points raised by Deputy Minister Ayalon in the video.

In response to the Erekat press release, Deputy Minister Ayalon issued his own press releaseasking Mr. Erekat why he did not address even one factual issue in the video. Ayalon also invited Erekat to a public debate on all the issues. “I challenge any of the Palestinian Authority political leadership to an open debate on all the issues ahead of September.” Mr. Erekat refused to take part in a public debate saying that “ending the Israeli occupation is not a point needed to discuss”.

This episode did not end there. Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister sent out another press releasesaying the following:

“I am more than a little surprised that Erekat rejected my offer of an open and public debate, especially considering he was concerned enough about our video to release a two page official press release”.

“Erekat is used to telling the world that Israel’s policies are illegal and against international law and I offered him the chance to back up his own statements and he is proving unable or unwilling to do so.”

“Like its diplomatic policies, it appears that the Palestinian Authority is only able to debate unilaterally.”

The sad thing about this episode is that it clearly demonstrates how the Palestinian Authority in general, and Erekat in particular, are scared of debating the facts regarding the dispute.

Please join us in thanking Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon for standing up for Israel’s right by sharing this video with your friends and family.
