Sydney: Five injured in worst anti-Semitic attack in Australia’s recent history

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) has called for Australia’s anti-racism strategy to be strengthened following the worst anti-Semitic attack in recent history. A group of eight young men attacked families who were walking home from a synagogue in Sydney late on Friday after Shabbat services.

The group allegedly yelled racial slurs at the families before the confrontation turned into a physical fight. Four men and a woman were injured and taken to hospital for treatment. One man aged in his 60ssuffered a bleed on the brain, others suffered broken bones.

ECAJ Executive Director Peter Wertheim said the authorities needed to be more proactive to ensure racism is kept in check. He called for the national anti-racism strategy to be strengthened and included in the education curriculum.

Police have charged three people over the assault, which happened in the Bondi area of Sydney. Two 17-year-olds were both charged with affray and breach of bail. They are due to appear in Sydney Children’s Court on Sunday. A 23-year-old man was also charged with affray and granted bail. Police are still looking for five others who ran away.

Wertheim said in a statement: “I grew up in Bondi and never experienced a single incident of anti-Semitism, not even verbal. For decades,Bondi has been famous for its relaxed, free-wheeling and culturally diverse way of life. Many Jewish people live there. There are numerousshuls, kosher eateries, a kosher butcher, kosher bakeries, kosher grocery stores and Jewish communal institutions. It is not uncommon to see men walking along the street wearing kippot or Chasidic garb, often strolling with their families. Sometimes they are the objects of verbal abuse, but violence is rare. Last night’s violence was exceptional.”

More than 1,000 attended the FIDF Western Region Gala, which featured musician Lionel Richie, David Foster and Friends, and a $150,000 donation from TV star Simon Cowell

Los Angeles, CA, October 24, 2013 – Over $20 million was raised at the annual Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Western Region Gala yesterday, Tuesday, October 22, 2013. More than 1,000 FIDF supporters and dignitaries from the United States and Israel gathered to express their support for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). FIDF National Board Member and major supporter,Haim Saban, and his wife, Cheryl, served as chairs of the star-studded FIDF Gala that took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.

Notable donations made at the event included $4.5 million from Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, Founder and President of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, $3.5 million from Vicki and Ron Simms of Simms Commercial Development, $2.3 million from Cheryl and Haim Saban, $2 million from Younes Nazarian, Co-Founder of Qualcomm, and his wife Soraya, and $1 million from Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle. Simon Cowell of American Idol and X-Factor also attended the event and announced a donation of $150,000 to benefit the IDF soldiers. The funds raised at the Gala will go towards wellbeing and educational programs for IDF soldiers.

The evening began with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner and a program, emceed by FIDF National and Western Region President, Julian Josephson, and featured remarkable performances by David Foster and Friends. Attendees were enthralled by the surprise performance of five-time Grammy Award winner, Lionel Richie. Among the many participants at the Gala were Avi Arad, CEO of Marvel Studios and Founder of Arad Productions Inc., and his wife JoyceAvi Lerner, Co-Chairman of NuImage, brothers Maurice and Paul Marciano of Guess Jeans, Ben Silverman, Founder and CEO of Electus, and his wife Jennifer Cuoco,Casey Wasserman of Wasserman Media Group, and Eli Tene, Co-Founder, Co-Managing Director and Principal of Peak Corporate Network and a Co-Founder and former Co-Chairman of the Israeli American Council, and his wife Dafna.

(Res.) Yitzhak (Jerry) Gershon, FIDF National Director and CEO, Leo David, FIDF Western Region Founder and Chairman, and his wife Ruth.

A very touching moment at the event occurred when Lone Soldiers, brothers Tamir Lerner, a combat soldier in the elite IDF unit Golani, and Adee Lerner, an IDF paratrooper, surprised their parents, Ettie and Shmulik Lerner, on stage. This emotional family reunion, which brought the crowd to tears, was made possible by the FIDF Lone Soldiers Program, which brought the brothers from Israel to Los Angeles so they could surprise their parents. The FIDF Lone Soldiers Program supports soldiers who have decided to leave their countries of origin and serve in the IDF. The program provides financial and social support, retreats, scholarships, and flights to visit their families abroad.

“The Jewish and Israeli community in LA showed its support and love yesterday for the soldiers of Israel,” said Saban. “The event connects this warm community with IDF soldiers, and it is our opportunity to say thank you to the soldiers who defend the State of Israel.”

A Looming Challenge In Hilchos Shabbos

0

Fifth-grade Bais Yaakov girls and gedolei ha’poskim in hilchos Shabbos finally have something in common. Both are very much excited about the popular Rainbow Loom bands—albeit for quite different reasons. For the poskim, finally after all these years, the esoteric melachos of meisach, oseh shtei batei nirin, oreg, and potzei’a have practical everyday application.

But let’s step back a bit to describe the latest craze that has hit not only the Bais Yaakovs but even the boys’ yeshivos. There are miniature weaving looms that colorful rubber bands are fitted onto, and the practitioners of this new pastime are now weaving colorful rubber-band jewelry.

The website states: “Rainbow Loom is a kit for making super fun rubber band links, recommended for 8 years to adult. Younger kids are recommended to use the kit with adult supervision (not for children 3 years or younger). Be sure to check out the instructions page to see a variety of ways to use the kit. Rainbow Loom is so new that new patterns are still being discovered.”

The new craze presents both challenges and opportunity. The challenges can be divided into three categories. We will go through each one.

The First Challenge

One challenge is that entire cadres of young girls and boys are now unwittingly violating four of the most obscure av melachos of Shabbos.

Meisach is setting up the loom. In our case, it is setting up the rubber bands on the plastic mini-loom. Other poskim hold that it is only when the loom is set up on the horizontal side that meisach applies. Regardless, meisach will be violated when the new jewelry is being woven.

Oseh batei nirin in theory is the setting up of the loom itself. The loom used in this modern manifestation works differently. It does not have back-and-forth pedals, but according to some of the explanations found in the Rishonim, the loom used would be a violation of oseh batei nirin too. Some poskim hold that the violation of oseh batei nirin involves merely passing the strings through the weaving machine.

There is also the melachah of oreg, which is the actual weaving. This can be violated even without a loom. The Rainbow Loom offers that possibility too. Indeed, from the fact that there are so many combinations, each different pattern can be a different violation of the above three av melachos.

The fourth category of prohibited melachah involving weaving is called potzei’a. This can involve removing the woven item from the loom, or removing one of the bands from the total bracelet.

Some would like to argue that because the main material being used is made of rubber bands, it is temporary and not a violation of the weaving melachos. However, most Rishonim understand that temporary means less than 24 hours. Experience shows that this is definitely not the case here.

The Second Challenge

There is yet another challenge here, unique to boys. Some of the items being created constitute jewelry, not merely bands. That being the case, the prohibition against wearing articles of clothing unique to women may be violated here. The prohibition is called “simlas isha” and may be tantamount to wearing a dress. We don’t want our yeshiva boys wearing dresses, so why are we letting them wear these decorative bracelets?

The Third Challenge

Finally, the last challenge involves bitul Torah. Many children are bringing these rubber bands and looms to school and working on them during class time. Yeshiva after yeshiva is finding that this has become a widespread problem.

The Opportunity

Notwithstanding all that was said above, the Rainbow Looms also offer tremendous opportunity. For the first time in close to two centuries, we now have an opportunity to teach the four most neglected areas of Hilchos Shabbos, these four av melachos, to an audience that is interested in and familiar with the weaving processes. We should rush to grasp it. v
