Why Orthodoxy is growing? By Dennis Prager

0

As almost every Jew knows by now, according to major reports on American Jewry — such as the most recent and most highly regarded Pew report — Orthodoxy is growing, while Conservative and Reform Judaism are shrinking.

Before presenting my explanations, I think it important to note that I have no denominational ax to grind. I was raised Orthodox, and went to yeshivas through the end of high school. But I left Orthodoxy early in life and have always been involved in Jewish life — Conservative, Reform, Orthodox, Chabad, Jewish federations and writing for Jewish publications.

Rabbi Krinsky Visits Agoura Hills, California

Chabad of the Conejo hosted Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky, Chairman of Merkoz L’inyonei Chinuch, for a unique evening titled “The Lubavitcher Rebbe: Up Close and Personal”. In front of a packed standing room only crowd, Rabbi Krinsky was interviewed by Rabbi Moshe Bryski on the life of the Rebbe; his work as a Mazkir and the personal driver of the Rebbe for over 40 years; the early years of the Nesius; the Rebbetzin; the global initiatives of Chabad-Lubavitch and the special love and admiration the Rebbe had for the Shluchim.

“We’ve hosted hundreds upon hundreds of speakers over the years” said Rabbi Bryski, “but I do not recall an evening such as this. Over two hours and yet you could have heard a pin drop in the room. The personal stories about the Rebbe that Rabbi Krinsky shared were inspirational, at times emotional, uplifting, with a dose of humorous anecdotes – all delivered with a sense of humility and total selflessness when it came to his relationship with the Rebbe”.

When asked about his initial response to being named by Newsweek Magazine as the #1 most influential Rabbi in America, Rabbi Krinsky laughed and commented “Me?, most influential??!! Who do I influence? It was the Shluchim of the Rebbe that are and will always be the most influential Rabbis in America and the world. This is not about me, (and pointing to the Shluchim in the room he said) “it’s about them!”

Prior to the interview, Rabbi Krinsky met privately with a group of “Balei Battim” who have helped build the Conejo Valley into a thriving growing Jewish community. He thanked each one individually and personally and challenged them to continue their partnership with Chabad. He also toured the local mosdos and reviewed plans for Chabad of the Conejo’s Phase II of construction.

Rabbi Krinsky also visited the community of Yorba Linda on Sunday evening for a similar program.

Israeli Flag removed at Swimming World Cup in Qatar- Unacceptable!

0

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today said it was unacceptable for the Qatari sponsors of the FINA Swimming World Cup to remove an Israeli flag from public display.

The Israeli flag was reportedly removed from outside the Hamad Aquatic Center during the international swimming tournament, which was held in Doha on October 20th and 21st.  When Israel’s swimming champion Amit Ivry competed, her name appeared next to a blank white flag in on-screen graphics.  The Israeli flag was raised, however, inside the aquatics center for the medal ceremony when Ivry was awarded the silver in the 100-meter individual medley.

Photos of the Israeli flag outside the event led to demands on Twitter that organizers remove the Israeli symbols and called for boycotts of Israeli athletes.

“While it is notable that Israeli swimmers competed in the Swimming World Cup, the Qatari organizers surrendered to complaints and effectively whitewashed Israeli symbols from the competition,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  “As more and more Arab countries host international sporting events in which Israeli athletes compete, this is an unacceptable gesture.”

Mr. Foxman continued, “International sporting federations, who have guidelines mandating that all qualifying athletes be permitted to compete, must also now ensure that host countries guarantee that all participants and national teams – regardless of their nationalities – be treated equally, and that their national origin be fully recognized.  Organizers of international sporting events cannot permit public opinion to politicize competitions, nor sully competitors.”

Israeli athletes have been barred from competitions in many Arab countries. In 2009, despite the guidelines of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), Israeli Tennis star Shahar Peer was denied a visa to enter the United Arab Emirates and compete in the Dubai Tennis Championship.  The UAE was forced to pay a fine.

The FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be played in Qatar in 2022.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

Deborah Raskin of Or HaChaim Wins Jewish Educator Award

After Executive Director Dr. Gil Graff addressed the students about the importance of “giving thanks,” Or HaChaim Academy Principal Deborah Raskin was surprised when Milken Family Foundation Executive Vice President Richard Sandler asked her to read the name of the $15,000 Jewish Educator Award recipient from her school…and the name was her own. Inspired by a teacher she once had, Mrs. Raskin said: “At the end of time, I can really say: I’ve impacted, I’ve made a difference and I love what I do.”

School leaders honored for sustaining strong schools during National Principals Month

ALEXANDRIA, VA–October 22, 2013–Rabbi Moshe Dear is among 61 outstanding elementary and middle school principals from across the nation and abroad who have been named as 2013 National Distinguished Principals (NDP) by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Dear is principal of Yavneh Academy in Los Angeles, California. The NDPs will be honored Oct. 25 at an awards banquet at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., as part of a two-day program, which for more than 20 years has been generously funded by VALIC. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will provide congratulatory remarks.

Established in 1984, the program recognizes public and private school principals who make superior contributions to their schools and communities. The distinguished principals are selected by NAESP state affiliates, including the District of Columbia, and by committees representing private and overseas schools.

NAESP Executive Director Gail Connelly commended the honorees for being exemplars of successful school leadership. “Only a principal can move a school from good to great, simultaneously championing children and uplifting the communities they serve,” she said. “We congratulate this class of NDPs for their steadfast dedication to educating our nation’s children to their fullest potential.”

“VALIC is proud to continue its support as sole sponsor of the National Distinguished Principal’s Award Program,” said Bruce Abrams, President of VALIC. “This program allows us to recognize the important role of principals on the education and development of our nation’s children, our future leaders. On behalf of VALIC, I congratulate all 61 of this year’s National Distinguished Principals and extend my deepest thanks for all that they do.”

October is a particularly fitting month to acknowledge the work of principals, as legislation has been introduced in both chambers of congress declaring October 2013 National Principals Month (S. Res. 260 & H. Res. 353). National Principals Month was established to recognize and honor the contributions of school principals and assistant principals toward the success of the nation’s students, and encourage awareness of their significance.

“Tzama Lecha Nafshi” by Gad Elbaz

In honor of the upcoming annual Chabad Kinus Hashluchim, Israeli singer Gad Elbaz has joined forces with filmmaker Danny Finkelman in a moving clip that depicts the Jewish soul’s longing for its Creator.

Elbaz’s rendition of the Lubavitcher’s Rebbe Tzama Lecha Nafishi, Composed by the Baal Hatanya, serves as the catalyst for a young Jewish man to seek out his roots as he listens to the timeless song while riding the New York City subway. Inspired by the music that so clearly pierces his soul, the young man pays a visit to both the Lubavitch World Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway, and the Rebbe’s Ohel in Queens, where he pours out his heart in prayer to the One Above.

Jewish Community Watch, a child-sexual-abuse advocacy group, held a landmark seminar directed toward addressing sexual abuse issues within the Jewish community. The following video contains some highlights from the three-hour seminar.

The event featured a variety of experts from a range of fields. Rav Tauber, a world-renowned Rav, Dayan and Rabbi, lectured and provided insight into Jewish legal and halachic perspective. Dennis Brown, Executive Director of the Ness Counseling Center, provided insight into the mind of a predator and his motivations. Meyer Seewald, Director of JCW, recounted his story and reasons for creating the organization.

Jewish Community Watch is an organization dedicated toward the eradication of child sexual abuse within the orthodox Jewish community. URGENT! Frum father of 5 needs a Kidney!

25

Avromie Israel was an 18 year old counselor in CGI Parksville when he got strep throat. No big deal. Except it was. The strep killed both of his kidneys. It took many years and number of doctors to figure that out.

He was able to manage his life by controlling his diet. He hadn’t touched a banana in 6 years! But this summer at 43 years old, the doctors told him that he had to start dialysis, diet wasn’t cutting it anymore. His kidney function is below 10% now and he is on the ‘list’ for a new kidney.

Avromie is the Tatty of 5 beautiful frum children ranging in age from 16 – 7 years old and the husband of Monica. They live in the Lubavitch community in Houston TX.

Do you know anyone who can donate a kidney? He is type O+ and is registered at Methodist Transplant Referral Center in Houston at 713 441 8900.
