Second Israeli-Linked Ship Hijacked Off Yemen Coast

0
By TPS • 26 November, 2023

Jerusalem, 26 November, 2023 (TPS) — An Israeli-linked ship was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Yemen, the vessel’s management said on Sunday.

The Zodiac Maritime ship management company, part of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer’s Zodiac Group, called the attack on the Central Park tanker “a suspected piracy incident,” the Associated Press reported.

“Our priority is the safety of our 22 crew onboard,” Zodiac said in a statement.

“The Turkish-captained vessel has a multinational crew consisting of a crew of Russian, Vietnamese, Bulgarian, Indian, Georgian and Filipino nationals. The vessel is carrying a full cargo of phosphoric acid,” added the company.

Global maritime risk management firm Ambrey said that it appeared that “U.S. naval forces are engaged in the situation and have asked vessels to stay clear of the area.”

It wasn’t immediately clear who was behind the suspected hijacking. Aden is held by forces allied to Yemen’s internationally recognized government and a Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

On Friday, an Iranian drone attacked an Israeli-owned commercial vessel in the Indian Ocean.

The attack on the CMA CGM Symi container ship came a week after Houthi rebels hijacked an Israeli-linked ship in the Red Sea. On Nov. 19, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that the Houthis hijacked the Bahaman-flagged Galaxy Leader vehicle carrier, calling it a “very grave incident of global consequence.”

“The ship departed Turkey on its way to India, staffed by civilians of various nationalities, not including Israelis. It is not an Israeli ship,” the military added. The Galaxy Leader is registered by a British company partially owned by Israeli tycoon Abraham Ungar.

“This is another act of Iranian terrorism and constitutes a leap forward in Iran’s aggression against the citizens of the free world, with international consequences regarding the security of the global shipping lanes,” the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem said.

Qatar: Truce To Start Friday; 13 Hostages to Be Freed in First Batch

0
By TPS • 23 November, 2023

Jerusalem, 23 November, 2023 (TPS) — The temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas will go into effect on Friday at 7 a.m., a spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign ministry said during a press conference in Doha on Thursday.

Hamas has agreed to release the first 13 hostages on Friday at 4 p.m., spokesman Majed Al Ansari announced.

“They will be 13 in number, all women and children, and those hostages who are from the same families will be put together within the same batch,” said Al Ansari.

“The communications that took place and the meetings that took place all through yesterday went on until early morning today with the Egyptians and the parties of the conflict present here in Doha,” he added.

Immediately after the announcement from Doha, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu confirmed that Israel had received a preliminary list of names. Jerusalem was checking the document and contacting the families of the hostages, the Prime Minister’s office said.

Briefing reporters on Thursday, Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht said there would be no halt to combat operations in the Gaza Strip before the ceasefire goes into effect.

The Israeli Cabinet on Wednesday voted to approve a deal with Hamas to see 50 of the approximately 240 hostages held by the terrorist group in Gaza freed in exchange for a four-day truce.

The release of every additional 10 hostages will result in one additional day in the pause in combat.

The expected truce includes a “comprehensive” ceasefire in both north and south of the strip, Qatar said on Thursday.

During the ceasefire, Israel will refrain from using surveillance drones in Gaza for six hours a day. The IDF will reportedly also allow fuel to enter Gaza during that time and dramatically increase the amount of goods permitted into the Strip.

In addition to the ceasefire, Israel agreed to commute the sentences of 150 female and teenage Palestinian security prisoners held in Israeli jails. They will be allowed to return to their previous places of residence.

Many of the terrorists set to be released are affiliated with Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terrorist groups.

At least 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on Oct. 7. Another 240 men, women, children and soldiers were taken back to Gaza as hostages. Some people remain unaccounted for as Israeli authorities continue to identify bodies and search for human remains.

Dutch Election Winner Geert Wilders Is an Anti-islam Firebrand Known as the Dutch Donald Trump, Staunch Suporter of Israel

0

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — He’s been called the Dutch Donald Trump. He’s been threatened with death countless times by Islamic extremists, convicted of insulting Moroccans, and Britain once banned him from entering the country.

Now Geert Wilders has won a massive victory in a Dutch election and is in pole position to form the next governing coalition and possibly become the Netherlands’ next prime minister.

An exit poll revealing his landslide appeared to take even 60-year-old political veteran Wilders by surprise.

In his first reaction, posted in a video on X, formerly Twitter, he spread his arms wide, put his face in his hands and said simply “35!” — the number of seats an exit poll forecast his Party for Freedom, or PVV, won in the 150-seat lower house of parliament.

Wilders, with his fiery tongue has long been one of the Netherlands’ best-known lawmakers at home and abroad. His populist policies and shock of peroxide blond hair have drawn comparisons with Trump.

But, unlike Trump, he seemed destined to spend his life in political opposition.

The only time Wilders came close to governing was when he supported the first coalition formed by Prime Minister Mark Rutte in 2010. But Wilders did not formally join the minority administration and brought it down after just 18 months in office in a dispute over austerity measures. Since then, mainstream parties have shunned him.

They no longer can.

“The PVV wants to, from a fantastic position with 35 seats that can totally no longer be ignored by any party, cooperate with other parties,” he told cheering supporters at his election celebration in a small bar in a working class suburb of The Hague.

Whether he can piece together a stable coalition with former political foes remains to be seen.

As well as alienating mainstream politicians, his fiery anti-Islam rhetoric also has made him a target for extremists and led to him living under round-the-clock protection for years. He has appeared in court as a victim of death threats, vowing never to be silenced.

Voting Wednesday at The Hague City Hall, Wilders was flanked by burly security guards scanning the cavernous space for possible threats. He has moved from one safe house to another over nearly two decades.

In 2009, the British government refused to let him visit the country, saying he posed a threat to “community harmony and therefore public security.” Wilders had been invited to Britain by a member of Parliament’s upper house, the House of Lords, to show his 15-minute film “Fitna,” which criticizes the Quran as a “fascist book.” The film sparked violent protests around the Muslim world in 2008 for linking Quranic verses with footage of terrorist attacks.

To court mainstream voters this time around, Wilders toned down the anti-Islam rhetoric and sought to focus less on what he calls the “de-Islamization” of the Netherlands and more on tackling hot-button issues such as housing shortages, a cost-of-living crisis and access to good health care.

His campaign platform nonetheless calls for a referendum on the Netherlands leaving the European Union, an “asylum stop” and “no Islamic schools, Qurans and mosques,” although he pledged Wednesday night not to breach Dutch laws or the country’s constitution that enshrines freedom of religion and expression.

Wilders is set to become the longest-serving lawmaker in the Dutch parliament later this year. He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1998, first for the center-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, where he mentored a young Rutte before quitting the party and setting up his Party for Freedom. He demonstrated a softer side Wednesday night by thanking his Hungarian-born wife Krisztina for her support.

He also is a staunch supporter of Israel and advocates shifting the Embassy of the Netherlands there to Jerusalem and closing the Dutch diplomatic post in Ramallah, home of the Palestinian Authority.

Wilders is known for his hardline politics, but also for his witty one-liners. And his pets. His two cats, Snoetje and Pluisje, have their own account on X, formerly Twitter, with nearly 23,000 followers.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: 17 Suspects Ransack Nike Store In Los Angeles, Steal $12K In Merchandise

0

Authorities in Los Angeles are currently on the lookout for over a dozen individuals involved in a Nike Store heist that resulted in the theft of approximately $12,000 worth of merchandise.

Video footage of the incident captures individuals with masks and hoods swiftly moving through the store, hastily collecting shoeboxes and tearing clothes off racks before making their escape.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the incident occurred on Sunday around 5:50 p.m. when a group of 17 suspects arrived at a shopping center on the 9800 block of South Alameda Street in five separate vehicles. The suspects, as described by LAPD, consist of four Black females and 13 Black males, all aged between 15 to 20 years old. The vehicles used by the suspects were identified as a tan Infiniti four-door, a gray KIA SUV, a white Honda four-door, and a black Audi.

The video footage shows the suspects using blue trash bags to swiftly collect stolen goods. In the midst of the chaos, the cries of a child can be heard. Notably, one of the suspects was seen wearing a distinctive hooded sweatshirt adorned with a logo featuring a bonsai tree and the words “Ritual of the Spirit.”

The Los Angeles Police Department has classified this incident as a “grand theft” and is actively investigating it with the assistance of detectives from the Organized Crime Retail Taskforce (ORCT) within the Commercial Crimes Division. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact Detective Juan Campos at ORCT.

The surge in organized retail crime gained momentum during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and has resulted in losses exceeding $100 billion in products throughout the United States, as reported in the 2022 National Retail Security Survey.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks zt”l – The Character of Jacob VAYETSE • 5771 5784

What kind of man was Jacob? This is the question that cries out to us in episode after episode of his life.

The first time we hear a description of him he is called ish tam: a simple, quiet, plain, straightforward man. But that is exactly what he seems not to be. We see him taking Esau’s birthright in exchange for a bowl of soup. We see him taking Esau’s blessing, in borrowed clothes, taking advantage of their father’s blindness.

These are troubling episodes. We can read them midrashically. The Midrash makes Jacob all-good and Esau all-bad. It rereads the biblical text to make it consistent with the highest standards of the moral life. There is much to be said for this approach.

Alternatively, we could say that in these cases the end justifies the means. In the case of the birthright, Jacob might have been testing Esau to see if he really cared about it. Since he gave it away so readily, Jacob might be right in concluding that it should go to one who valued it. In the case of the blessing, Jacob was obeying his mother, who had received a Divine oracle saying that “the older shall serve the younger.”

Yet the text remains disturbing. Isaac says to Esau, “Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing.” Esau says, “Isn’t he rightly named Jacob [supplanter]? He has supplanted me these two times: He took my birthright, and now he’s taken my blessing!” Such accusations are not levelled against any other biblical hero.

Nor does the story end there. In this week’s parsha a similar deceit is practiced on him. After his wedding night, he discovers that he has married Leah, not, as he thought, his beloved Rachel. He complains to Laban:

“What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?”

Gen. 29:25

Laban replies:

“It is not done in our place to give the younger before the firstborn.”

Gen. 29:26

It’s hard not to see this as precise measure-for-measure retribution. The younger Jacob pretended to be the older Esau. Now the elder Leah has been disguised as the younger Rachel. A fundamental principle of biblical morality is at work here: As you do, so shall be done to you.

Yet the web of deception continues. After Rachel has given birth to Joseph, Jacob wants to return home. He has been with Laban long enough. Laban urges him to stay and tells him to name his price. Jacob then embarks on an extraordinary course of action. He tells Laban he wants no wages at all. Let Laban remove every spotted or streaked lamb from the flock, and every streaked or spotted goat. Jacob will then keep, as his hire, any new born spotted or streaked animals.

It is an offer that speaks simultaneously to Laban’s greed and his ignorance. He seems to be getting Jacob’s labour for almost nothing. He is demanding no wages. And the chance of unspotted animals giving birth to spotted offspring seems remote.

Jacob knows better. In charge of the flocks, he goes through an elaborate procedure involving peeled branches of poplar, almond, and plane trees, which he places with their drinking water. The result is that they do in fact produce streaked and spotted offspring.

How this happened has intrigued not only the commentators (who mostly assume that it was a miracle, God’s way of assuring Jacob’s welfare) but also scientists. Some argue that Jacob must have had an understanding of genetics. Two unspotted sheep can produce spotted offspring. Jacob had doubtless noticed this in his many years of tending Laban’s flocks.

Others have suggested that prenatal nutrition can have an epigenetic effect – that is, it can cause a certain gene to be expressed which might not have been otherwise. Had the peeled branches of poplar, almond, and plane trees been added to the water the sheep drank, they might have affected the Agouti gene that determines the colour of fur in sheep and mice.[1]

However it happened, the result was dramatic. Jacob became rich:

In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.

Gen. 30:43

Inevitably, Laban and his sons felt cheated. Jacob sensed their displeasure, and – having taken counsel with his wives and being advised to leave by God Himself – departs while Laban is away sheep-shearing. Laban eventually discovers that Jacob has left, and pursues him for seven days, catching up with him in the mountains of Gilead.

The text is fraught with accusation and counteraccusation. Laban and Jacob both feel cheated. They both believe that the flocks and herds are rightfully theirs. They both regard themselves as the victim of the other’s deceitfulness. The end result is that Jacob finds himself forced to run away from Laban as he was earlier forced to run away from Esau, in both cases in fear of his life.

So the question returns. What kind of man was Jacob? He seems anything but an ish tam, a straightforward man. And surely this is not the way for a religious role model to behave – in such a way that first his father, then his brother, then his father-in-law, accuse him of deceit. What kind of story is the Torah telling us in the way it narrates the life of Jacob?

One way of approaching an answer is to look at a specific character – often a hare, or in African-American tradition, “Brer Rabbit” – in the folktales of oppressed people. Henry Louis Gates, the American literary critic, has argued that such figures represent “the creative way the slave community responded to the oppressor’s failure to address them as human beings created in the image of God.” They have “a fragile body but a deceptively strong mind.” Using their intelligence to outwit their stronger opponents, they are able to deconstruct and subvert, in small ways, the hierarchy of dominance favouring the rich and the strong. They represent the momentary freedom of the unfree, a protest against the random injustices of the world.[2]

That, it seems to me, is what Jacob represents in this, the early phase of his life. He enters the world as the younger of two twins. His brother is strong, ruddy, hairy, a skilful hunter, a man of the open country, whereas Jacob is quiet, a scholar. Then he must confront the fact that his father loves his brother more than him. Then he finds himself at the mercy of Laban, a possessive, exploitative, and deceptive figure who takes advantage of his vulnerability. Jacob is the man who – as almost all of us do at some time or other – finds that life is unfair.

What Jacob shows, by his sheer quick-wittedness, is that the strength of the strong can also be their weakness. So it is when Esau comes in exhausted from the hunt, famished, that he is willing to impulsively trade his birthright for some soup. So it is when the blind Isaac is prepared to bless the son who will bring him venison to eat. So it is when Laban hears the prospect of getting Jacob’s labour for free. Every strength has its Achilles’ heel, its weakness, and this can be used by the weak to gain victory over the strong.

Jacob represents the refusal of the weak to accept the hierarchy created by the strong. His acts are a form of defiance, an insistence on the dignity of the weak (vis-a-vis Esau), the less loved (by Isaac), and the refugee (in Laban’s house). In this sense he is one element of what, historically, it has been like to be a Jew.

But the Jacob we see in these chapters is not the figure whom, ultimately, we are called on to emulate. We can see why. Jacob wins his battles with Esau and Laban but at the cost of eventually having to flee in fear of his life. Quick-wittedness is merely a temporary solution.

It is only later, after his wrestling match with the angel, that he receives a new name – that is, a new identity – as Israel, “because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.” As Israel he is unafraid to contend with people face-to-face. He no longer needs to outwit them by clever but ultimately futile stratagems. His children will eventually become the people whose dignity lies in the unbreakable covenant they make with God.

Yet we can see something of Jacob’s early life in one of the most remarkable features of Jewish history. For almost two thousand years Jews were looked down on as pariahs, yet they refused to internalise that image, just as Jacob refused to accept the hierarchies of power or affection that condemned him to be a mere second-best. Jews throughout history, like Jacob, have relied not on physical strength or material wealth but on qualities of the mind.

In the end, though, Jacob must become Israel. For it is not the quick-witted victor but the hero of moral courage who stands tall in the eyes of humanity and God.

United Airlines suspends pilot after he called Hamas terrorists ‘brave people’

0

We expect this man to be fired immediately. He puts passengers in danger on every flight.’

By World Israel News Staff

United Airlines has suspended a pilot, Ibrahim R. Mossallam, for calling Hamas terrorists “brave people” in an X post.

A United Airlines spokesperson said the pilot was removed from their flight schedule but is still being paid a salary.

The airline said it will investigate the issue before taking further steps.

On October 7th, shortly after the Hamas massacre of 1,200 people in Israel and the kidnapping of 240 others, Mossallam posted on X: “This is a resistance by a brave people who have endured decades of occupation, oppression, humiliation, apartheid and straight up murder.”

He continued, “This was not an  unprovoked attack, but was a response to this past year’s attack by the Zionist regime.”

In response, Jason Greenblatt, a former White House Middle East envoy, wrote on X: “For those who fly United [I do] we need answers about how we can feel safe in a [plane] flown by a pilot that said atrocities committed by Hamas on Oct 7 were ‘resistance by brave people’. Spread the word folks & demand an answer from United.”

StopAntisemitism retweeted the post on their X platform and asked, “How can Jewish passengers feel safe when this man flies their plane?”

X posters sounded off on the pilot’s remarks. “We expect this man to be fired immediately,” Mike G posted. “He puts passengers in danger on every flight.”

Moore Hogge wrote: “I have flown with you exclusively for the past 15 years. I will never board another United flight until this pilot is fired! I don’t feel safe flying with you anymore.”

The StopAntisemtism account exposed Mossallam’s other posts which showed a consistent pattern of misinformation about the war and anti-Jewish rhetoric.

United Airlines isn’t the only airline to suspend a pilot over antisemitic and incendiary rhetoric.  Last month, Air Canada dismissed pilot Mostafa Ezzo, after he wrote on Instagram: “F**k Israel, burn in hell.”

Leading Actresses Dropped By Agencies After Pro-Palestinian Statements

0

NEW YORK (VINnews) — Several actors have come out against Israel, and are now experiencing cutbacks in their personal careers due to their stand. Susan Sarandon accused Israel of war crimes, claimed that the massacre occurred “in a certain context” and said that Jews are “finally getting a taste of how it feels to be Muslim in America”.

In the wake of her controversial statements, Sarandon has now been dropped by Hollywood agency UTA.

Melissa Barrera, who stars in the revival o horror franchise Scream, has been fired from the upcoming Scream 7, due to the Spyglass Media Group interpreting her pro-Palestine social media posts as “antisemitic”.

Last month, Barrera posted on her Instagram Story: “I too come from a colonized country” alongside a Mexican flag emoji – as well as “Palestine WILL be free”, followed by a Palestinian flag. She concluded the Story with the quote: “They tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were seeds.”

At the same time other actors, mainly Jewish ones, have made a strong stand in favor of Israel.

In a clip released by actress Ginnifer Goodwin ( a Jewish actress from Memphis), who is famous for her voice dubbings in animated movies, she decides to be the voice of Raz Asher, a 4-year-old girl who is being held captive in Gaza. Goodwin has championed the case of Asher, her mother Doron and her 2-year-old sister Aviv on her social media pages, presenting their pictures and demanding their immediate return.

New York City Boosting Counterterrorism Measures Amid Increasing Terrorist Chatter

0

New York City is on high alert as authorities have received intelligence chatter about an elevated risk of a potential terrorist attack directly linked to the war in Gaza.

Governor Kathy Hochul said she has taken action to bolster security measures and reinforce the staffing of the Joint Terrorism Task Force in response to a fresh threat assessment provided by the New York State Intelligence Center. This assessment highlights growing concerns that the violence in Gaza is generating discussions among extremist groups regarding potential targets within New York.

Hochul said, “I am working hard at the state level with the control I have. I’ll be talking about this tomorrow, about exactly what we’re doing, and how many online threats we’ve uncovered, how many have been investigated, what the outcome is.”

The governor detailed her plans to address online threats and radicalization, coinciding with CBS News obtaining another threat assessment that underscores “an increasing terror threat to New York State.”

According to the intelligence center, the surge in antisemitic and anti-Palestinian rhetoric on social media platforms is contributing to a rise in hate crimes targeting Jews, Muslims, and Arabs.

“The expansion of Israeli operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the increase in civilian casualties raises the likelihood that violent extremist threat actors will seek to conduct attacks against targets in the West, with New York State being a focus. Terrorist messaging has placed focus on attacking ‘soft targets’ such as protests, group gatherings, and other public events,” the report warned.

Last week, Governor Hochul allocated $2.5 million to augment the State Police’s investigative capacity within the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force across New York City, Albany, Buffalo, and Rochester.

“We are working with all law enforcement, federal, state, and local, statewide. These are not just New York City events,” Hochul emphasized.

FBI Director Christopher Wray previously voiced his own concerns in testimony to Congress, saying, “Our most immediate concern is that violent extremists, individuals or small groups, will draw inspiration from the events in the Middle East to carry out attacks against Americans going about their daily lives. That includes not just homegrown violent extremists, inspired by a foreign terrorist organization, but also domestic violent extremists targeting Jewish or Muslim communities. We’ve already seen that with the individual we arrested last week in Houston.”

The situation has become increasingly worrisome as the number of bias incidents investigated by the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force surged by 124% in October, with anti-Jewish incidents showing a staggering 214% increase.
