Tens of Thousands Rally in Washington Under Heavy Security, Crying ‘Never Again’

0

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supporters of Israel rallied by the thousands on the National Mall under heavy security Tuesday, voicing solidarity in the fight against Hamas and crying “never again.”

The Homeland Security Department designated the march a “level 1” security event, the highest classification in its system and one usually used for the Super Bowl and other major events, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. The designation means the event required substantial law enforcement assistance from federal agencies, the officials said.

A succession of speakers took the stage, overlooking a sea of Israeli and U.S. flags, to denounce Hamas’ bloody incursion Oct. 7 and what the speakers said was a virulent spread of antisemitism internationally, “an embarrassment to all civilized people and nations,” in the words of Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who addressed the crowd by video.

After “the largest massacre since the Holocaust,” he said, “let us call out together, never again.”

“No one will break us,” he vowed. “We will rise again. … There is no greater and just cause than this.”

The FBI and Homeland Security sent a joint bulletin to law enforcement officials in Washington warning about the potential for violence or an attack inspired by the Israel-Hamas war, the officials said. But the bulletin said clearly that federal officials haven’t identified any “specific, actionable threat” to the march, they said.

The officials were not authorized to discuss details of the law enforcement bulletin publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Many of the demonstrators at the “March for Israel” wore Israeli flags wrapped around their shoulders, flowing behind them, or held small Israeli flags in their hands. Security was tight, with dump trucks blocking access to the mall and police dispersed throughout the area and on horseback.

“I hope that it shows solidarity” with Israel, said Jackie Seley of Rockville, Maryland, who came with friends from New York. “And I hope that it raises awareness for the hostages that are currently in danger.”

Melanie Lubin of Olney, Maryland, wore a flag half made up with the Stars and Stripes and half with Israel’s blue and white Star of David. Asked about the death toll in Gaza and criticism of the way Israel has conducted its military campaign, she said: “I think everyone is concerned about what is happening in Gaza and to civilians in Israel. Israel is doing its best. This is a war. Israel did not start this war.”

Hamas militants stormed into Israel from Gaza in the surprise incursion Oct. 7, killing more than 1,200 people and taking more than 200 hostages. Israel has responded with weeks of attacks in Gaza, which have killed more than 11,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.

The show of support for Israel comes as condemnation of the conflict has grown worldwide, stoking anti-Israel sentiment, and as President Joe Biden urges Israel to moderate some of its tactics to ease civilian suffering in Gaza after voicing full-throated solidarity with the Israelis in the war’s early weeks.

IDF Reveals Intricate Hamas Underground ‘Pit’ in Gaza

0

The IDF revealed Tuesday intricate specifics about Hamas’s elaborate underground headquarters, referred to as the “pit,” situated beneath Gaza City.

The operation to seize this facility, an extension of Hamas’s military command area, involved high-powered Units 401 and Givati troops due to its expected difficulty. However, officials were taken aback by its sophistication, comparable to the IDF’s underground facility at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv.

Of particular surprise was a specialized shaft equipped with an elevator reaching an unprecedented depth of 30 meters, surpassing the typical depth of Hamas tunnels. This subterranean complex included advanced features like air conditioning, oxygen supply, and notably advanced communication systems, suggesting a highly developed command center.

Within this tunnel, signs indicated that high-ranking Hamas officials may have hidden there, including speculations about the potential presence of Gaza Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar and Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif.

IDF Division 162 Commander Brig. Gen. Itzik Cohen highlighted the strategic significance of dismantling such Hamas infrastructure, emphasizing its potential impact on destabilizing the military and governance capabilities of Hamas in Gaza City.

Cohen further emphasized the comprehensive approach adopted by the IDF, stating, “Since the beginning of the incursion, our forces have systematically targeted key Hamas infrastructure. Over 1,000 Hamas terrorists have been neutralized, and rocket attacks from northern Gaza have decreased by approximately 80%.”

Israel: No ‘Friction’ Between Soldiers and Patients in Gaza Hospital

0
By Pesach Benson • 15 November, 2023

Jerusalem, 15 November, 2023 (TPS) — The Israel Defense Forces said on Wednesday morning that there is no “friction” between soldiers inside Gaza’s Shifa Hospital and its patients or staff.

The IDF said weapons and other terror assets were found. It is believed that intelligence information shedding light on the location of hostages may be found.

According to the IDF, five terrorists were killed in a gun battle while no Israeli forces were hurt.

Military forces entered a specific area of the hospital in the early hours of the morning in an operation the IDF described as “targeted” and “based on intelligence information and an operational necessity.”

The military added that forces were joined by medical teams and Arabic speakers “who have undergone specified training to prepare for this complex and sensitive environment, with the intent that no harm is caused to the civilians being used by Hamas as human shields.”

Briefing reporters on Tuesday night, IDF Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari warned that Gaza’s medical facilities were losing their protected status because of Hamas activities there.

“In recent weeks we have stressed again and again, that because of Hamas’s use of hospitals for military purposes, it will lose its special protection under intentional law,” Hagari said.

“We are forced to operate in a focused and careful manner against Hamas’s terror infrastructure in the hospitals,” he continued. “We call on the Hamas operatives who are hiding in the hospitals to surrender so as not to endanger those in the hospitals.”

The White House confirmed Israel’s assessment on Tuesday.

“We have information that Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad use some hospitals in the Gaza Strip, including al-Shifa, and tunnels underneath them to conceal and to support their military operations and to hold hostages,” White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.

Citing American findings, Kirby added, “Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad members operate a command and control [center] from al-Shifa in Gaza City. They have stored weapons there and they’re prepared to respond to an Israeli military operation against that facility.”

As reported by the Tazpit Press Service, Hamas makes extensive use of the Shifa Hospital. Believing that Israel would not attack a hospital during a war, Hamas leaders hide there, launch rockets from its compound, hide hostages in the bowels of the building, torture collaborators, and dig tunnels connecting Shifa to nearby sites. Israel also released a recording of a phone call confirming that Hamas also stores at least a half-million liters of fuel underneath the compound.

Located in Gaza’s North Rimal neighborhood and boasting 570 beds, Shifa is the Strip’s largest medical center, serving the medical needs of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. It was originally built by British authorities in 1946. In the 1980s, Israel renovated and expanded Shifa as part of an initiative to improve Gaza living conditions.

As far back as 2009, the Israeli Security Agency (Shin Bet) reported during the Gaza war of that year that Hamas operatives were hiding in the hospital, and that the basement had become Hamas’s headquarters.

In addition to being used to hide Hamas leaders and hostages, the terror group is known to have launched rockets, tortured suspected collaborators and hoarded a half-million liters of fuel in the hospital compound.

Hamas Planned ‘Second Phase’ for Oct. 7 Massacre

0

GAZA (JNS) – A planned second phase of Hamas’s brutal Oct. 7 assault on southern Israel involved joining forces with terrorists in Judea and Samaria, The Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing Western and Middle Eastern security officials briefed on evidence obtained by Israel.

Some of the Hamas terrorists that participated in the attack carried enough food, ammunition and equipment for several days, the officials said, and had instructions to continue deeper into the Jewish state once the initial massacre succeeded, potentially with the goal of attacking larger population centers.

One group of terrorists carried maps and other surveillance information suggesting their plan was to continue on to the border with southern Judea, two senior Middle East intelligence officials and one former U.S. official familiar with the evidence told The Washington Post.

“They planned a second phase, including in major Israeli cities and military bases,” said one senior Israeli intelligence official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

According to the report, day laborers from Gaza who were permitted to enter Israel carried out reconnaissance in preparation for the terrorist onslaught. Before Oct. 7, Israel provided work permits for some 17,000 Palestinians from Gaza.

Some of the Hamas terrorists carried high-resolution maps, estimated to have been produced by drones flying as low as 150 feet, according to The Washington Post.

Hamas’s plans for the Oct. 7 attacks also included detailed instructions on “which [terror] commander should rape which [Israeli] soldiers in different places,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told The Washington Post on Sunday.

The report confirmed some of the worst atrocities committed by Hamas on Oct. 7, including one instance where terrorists in Kibbutz Be’eri “cut open the belly of a pregnant woman and dragged her fetus onto the ground.”

US And South Korea Sharpen Deterrence Plans Over North Korean Nuclear Threat

The United States and South Korea on Monday updated a bilateral security agreement with the aim of more effectively countering North Korea’s evolving nuclear and missile threats.

The move followed high-level military talks in Seoul, where the allies also discussed enhancing three-way defense exercises with Japan and improving information-sharing on North Korean missile launches.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was in Seoul for annual security talks with South Korean military officials, including Defense Minister Shin Won-sik, which were focused on boosting nuclear deterrence against North Korea. They also talked about how the allies could coordinate over broader geopolitical issues, including Russia’s war on Ukraine and China’s regional assertiveness, Austin said.

Tensions between the Koreas are at their highest point in years as the pace of both North Korea’s weapons tests and South Korea’s combined military exercises with the United States have intensified in a cycle of tit-for-tat.

During their Security Consultative Meeting, Austin and Shin signed a new version of their countries’ Tailored Deterrence Strategy agreement, which was revised for the first time in a decade to address the growing threat of the North’s military nuclear program.

Shin said the new document spells out that the United States would mobilize its full range of military capabilities, including nuclear ones, to defend the South in the event of a North Korean nuclear attack. He also said the document will provide a template for the allies to strategize how South Korea could assist U.S. nuclear operations in such events with its conventional capabilities but didn’t elaborate further.

“Our deterrence commitment to the ROK remains ironclad — that includes a full range of our nuclear, conventional and missile defense capabilities,” Austin said at a news conference, referring to South Korea’s formal name, the Republic of Korea.

Austin said the U.S. deployments of major military assets to South Korea in recent months, which included a U.S. nuclear ballistic missile submarine, a nuclear-capable B-52 bomber and aircraft carriers, demonstrated the U.S. commitment to defense of the South. He said another U.S. aircraft carrier battle group will travel to the region soon in a further show of force.

Shin said the allies, after conducting their largest-ever live-fire training this year, will continue to further expand their combined military exercises to deter and respond to North Korean threats.

The United States and the government of conservative South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol have also been strengthening their trilateral security cooperation with Japan, which has included joint military exercises and tightened defense planning, in response to North Korea’s intensifying weapons development and verbal threats of nuclear conflict.

Arriving in South Korea over the weekend, Austin earlier met Shin during a three-way meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara, who participated in the talks through online video. They agreed to start as planned a real-time information sharing arrangement on North Korean missile launches in December. They also agreed to set up multiyear plans in coming weeks to enhance their trilateral military exercises, South Korea’s Defense Ministry said.

Austin also on Sunday met Yoon, who expressed satisfaction over the increased consultations with Washington over nuclear deterrence plans and the more frequent deployment of advanced U.S. military assets to the Korean Peninsula in past months, which he described as crucial for keeping the North’s nuclear and missile threats in check.

Yoon also stressed that the allies should be prepared for any type of provocation by the North, including a “Hamas-style surprise attack,” and insisted that North Korea was “directly and indirectly” involved in Russia’s war on Ukraine and the clashes between Israel and Hamas, according to his office.

U.S. and South Korean officials have accused North Korea of providing munitions and military equipment to Russia to help boost its war in Ukraine. South Korean officials have said North Korea-made rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons could have been used by Hamas during its Oct. 7 assault on Israel and that the North could be considering selling weapons to militant groups in the Middle East amid a deepening confrontation with the United States.

The surprise attack on Israel by Hamas has raised concerns in South Korea about the possibility of a similar assault by North Korea and prompted the Yoon government to openly discuss suspending a 2018 inter-Korean military agreement on reducing border tensions to strengthen front-line surveillance on the North.

The agreement, reached during a brief period of diplomacy between South Korea’s former liberal President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, created buffer zones along land and sea boundaries and no-fly zones above the border to prevent clashes. Shin has been a vocal critic of the agreement, particularly the no-fly zones, which he insists prevents South Korea from fully utilizing its air surveillance assets at a time when North Korean nuclear threats are growing.

Without elaborating, Austin said he discussed the inter-Korean agreement with Shin and that the allies will “stay in close consultation” on the issue moving forward.

Austin’s meetings in South Korea followed a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who met with Yoon and other members of South Korea’s leadership to discuss the North Korean threat and the potential arms cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.

U.S. and South Korean officials say Kim in return for providing munitions to Russia could seek Russian help to upgrade his own military capabilities, possibly including technical assistance on North Korean efforts to launch its first military spy satellite following two consecutive launch failures in recent months.

North Korean state media had condemned the visits.

On Tuesday, Austin and Shin will participate in an inaugural defense ministerial meeting between South Korea and the U.S.-led United Nations Command member states, which sent forces to fight on behalf of the South during the 1950-53 Korean War.

The North’s Foreign Ministry on Monday criticized the planned meeting, calling it a “dangerous scheme to ignite a new war of aggression” against the North.

Los Angeles: Teachers who taught anti-Israel bias are removed from school

0

Los Angeles charter school says teachers who taught first graders about ‘genocide of Palestine’ will not return.

The Los Angeles charter school that stirred controversy at the synagogue where it is housed after first-grade teachers taught lessons about “the genocide of Palestine” announced steps on Friday to “repair this harm.”

Two teachers have been removed from the school and the principal has been placed on leave at Citizens of the World Charter School-East Valley, announced Melissa Kaplan, the school network’s executive director, at a press conference held outside Adat Ari El synagogue.

Hye-Won Gehring, the school’s principal, had relayed complaints from her staff to the synagogue’s rabbi about Israeli flags that were hung up on the campus after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, according to Kaplan and Brian Schuldenfrei, Adat Ari El’s senior rabbi. Kaplan said Gehring would be going on a two-week leave to “focus on learning how to combat antisemitism and engage in sensitivity training to learn from this experience.”

Gehring had sent an email to Schuldenfrei on Oct. 16 asking how long the flags would be up, according to the rabbi. Kaplan called the question “insensitive and inappropriate,” and Schuldenfrei recounted that he had told Gehring her email was “offensive.”

“I told the principal that inquiring when our flags were coming down was like asking someone on Sept. 11 to take down their American flags just a few days later. It is painfully insensitive,” Schuldenfrei said during the press conference. He added that the principal had apologized to him, but that “this was not the end of the issue.”

Gehring made a brief statement at the press conference.

“I am deeply apologetic for my insensitive questions to Rabbi Schuldenfrei and how I mishandled this important set of events,” Gehring said. “I did not understand the impact of my actions, and I am committed to creating a safe environment for all of my students, including my Jewish students, staff and families.”

Kaplan, who was not made available to reporters after the press conference, acknowledged the “pain and distress” that many in the Jewish community are experiencing, and said she “deeply apologize[s] for these missteps” on behalf of her staff.

“CWC unequivocally condemns the social media posts by our staff members, including the use of the word ‘genocide’ to describe Israel’s actions,” Kaplan said. “CWC unequivocally condemns the disturbing suggestion that Jews should leave the region, and we unequivocally condemn any lesson that creates bias or fear among our students.”

Kaplan added that the findings of the investigation would be kept confidential, but that the community will receive updates as needed, and that the outcome of the process would inform any further consequences from this episode. She also said that CWC is coordinating with the Anti-Defamation League to train its leadership and staff.

During his remarks, Schuldenfrei shared the sequence of events that occurred at the school, saying that he hopes the incident can be “an educational moment.”

Schuldenfrei questioned why the content of the lessons was not reviewed, saying that the teachers “weaponized their role as educators to indoctrinate the youngest of children with a radical and hateful agenda.”

“We know what happens when a blind eye is turned to such hatred, and we will not cower in the corner while our campus and community is defiled,” Schuldenfrei said.

Schuldenfrei also referenced teshuvah, the Jewish idea of repentance, adding that he finds it “heartening to see Citizens of the World take these first steps,” and he reiterated his synagogue’s commitment to working with the school “to ensure that this is a learning moment for everyone.”

In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Schuldenfrei acknowledged that is it rare for synagogues to call press conferences — an indication, he said, that “we’re living in rare times where we feel, unlike any other time since the Holocaust, we feel the pressure of this pernicious antisemitism. And we also feel for something like that to occur in our own backyard, we felt that we couldn’t simply stand by.”

Schuldenfrei said he is comfortable with the first steps the school is taking and hopes his community is, too. He also said he hopes this debacle does not dissuade future collaborations between Jewish and non-Jewish groups. He noted that his synagogue offers its space to church groups, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and other non-Jewish events.

“We as Jews are proud Americans, and here at Adat Ari El, one of the holiest endeavors we engage is working with non-Jews,” he said. “We want this to specifically be a home to Jews, but we want this to be a campus that is of service to all of humanity.”

The final speaker at the press conference was Nick Melvoin, a school board member for the Los Angeles Unified School District and a Democratic candidate for Congress who is running for the district that Adam Schiff currently represents. (Schiff is running for a Senate seat that has a primary vote in March.) Melvoin commended the school for its efforts to respond to the incident and added that he will be bringing a policy package to the district’s board of education to address concerns of bias and antisemitism.

Melvoin said he would push for a comprehensive definition of antisemitism; a thorough review of curriculum to ensure that there is no bias; and the inclusion of Jewish experiences and antisemitism in diversity, equity and inclusion frameworks; and funding for students to visit Holocaust museums.

EU Condemns Hamas’s Use of ‘Hospitals and Civilians As Human Shields’

0

The European Union issued a condemnation of Hamas on Sunday, denouncing the group for employing “hospitals and civilians as human shields” within the Gaza Strip.

Expressing concern, the EU’s statement emphasized the imperative need for allowing civilians to evacuate the combat zone.

“The EU condemns the use of hospitals and civilians as human shields by Hamas,” the statement read. “Civilians must be allowed to leave the combat zone. These hostilities are severely impacting hospitals and taking a horrific toll on civilians and medical staff.”

Israel has presented a substantial body of evidence detailing instances of Hamas using these medical facilities as shields, exploiting the tunnels beneath them for clandestine purposes.

“Hospitals must be supplied immediately with the most urgent medical supplies, and patients that require urgent medical care need to be evacuated safely,” the statement further added. “In this context, we urge Israel to exercise maximum restraint to ensure the protection of civilians.”

Israeli navy discovers Hamas weapons hidden underwater

0

All explosives were defused or brought to the beach so they could be detonated safely.

By Israel World News Staff

YALTAM, Israel Navy’s underwater unit, is recovering Hamas weapons and combat equipment off the coast of Gaza, an IDF spokesperson reported on Monday.

Searching Gaza’s shores, YALTAM located dozens of weapons, explosive belts, ammunition, and rudimentary explosives, all of which were safely defused by detonation.

The weapons are thought to have belonged to terrorists who attempted to invade Israel through the Mediterranean Sea and were killed during the many gun battles during and immediately after the October 7th invasion, including one abortive incursion with 10 Hamas casualties on Zikim beach.

The unit found an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) warhead and brought it to the beach where it was safely detonated.

Senator Fetterman taunts anti-Israel protesters with Israeli flag

0

The Democrat is refusing to back down from his pro-Israel views despite opposition from his former supporters.

US Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) continues to vocally support Israel despite opposition from many of his constituents and former supporters.

As anti-Israel demonstrators who were protesting in favor of a ceasefire and against Israel’s military action against the Hamas terror group were being arrested, the Senator walked by, waving an Israeli flag and laughing.

Recently, Fetterman received a letter signed by members of his former campaign staff, among others, calling him to change his mind and support a ceasefire, but he refused.

On Tuesday, the Senator hung posters of the Israelis who were abducted by Hamas to the Gaza Strip in his front office.

“In my front office, I have displayed the posters of the innocent Israelis kidnapped by Hamas,” Fetterman wrote on X on Tuesday, alongside a video showing the display.

He vowed, “They will stay up until every single person is safely returned home.”
