Zaka Finds 200 Bodies in Basement of Al-Shifa Hospital

0

After operating at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza for a second day, a team of Zaka volunteers has discovered approximately 200 bodies in the hospital’s basement, Matzav.com has learned.

Among these, as reported earlier, the body of Yehudit Weiss, a 65-year-old mother of five who was abducted by Hamas on October 7, was recovered.

Currently, it is suspected that there are other bodies belonging to missing hostages, although this has not yet been confirmed. The daunting process of identification is underway.

Zaka Tel-Aviv volunteers are at the forefront of this grim but necessary task, working alongside medical examiners.

The identification process is painstaking and slow, with the bodies in such a state that the work is both physically and emotionally demanding.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks zt”l – Why Did Isaac Love Esau? ?????? TOLDOT • 5771, 5777, 5784

Even before they were born, Jacob and Esau struggled in the womb. They were destined, it seems, to be eternal adversaries. Not only were they were different in character and appearance. They also held different places in their parents’ affections:

The boys grew up, and Esau became a skilful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was a quiet man, staying among the tents. Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebecca loved Jacob.

Gen. 25:27-28

We know why Rebecca loved Jacob. Before the twins were born, the pains Rebecca felt were so great that “she went to inquire of the Lord.” This is what she was told:

“Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”

Gen. 25:23

It seemed as if God were saying that the younger would prevail and carry forward the burden of history, so it was the younger, Jacob, whom she loved.

But why, in that case, did Isaac love Esau? Did he not know about Rebecca’s oracle? Had she not told him about it? Besides, did he not know that Esau was wild and impetuous? Can we really take literally the proposition that Isaac loved Esau because “he had a taste for wild game,” as if his affections were determined by his stomach, by the fact that his elder son brought him food he loved? Surely not, when the very future of the covenant was at stake.

The classic answer, given by Rashi, listens closely to the literal text. Esau, says the Torah, “knew how to trap [yode’a tzayid].” Isaac loved him “because entrapment was in his mouth [ki tzayid befiv].” Esau, says Rashi, trapped Isaac by his mouth. Here is Rashi’s comment on the phrase “knew how to trap”:

He knew how to trap and deceive his father with his mouth. He would ask him, “Father, how should one tithe salt and straw?” Consequently, his father believed him to be strict in observing the commands.

Rashi to 25:27

Esau knew full well that salt and straw do not require tithes, but he asked so as to give the impression that he was strictly religious. And here is Rashi’s comment on the phrase that Isaac loved him “because entrapment was in his mouth”:

The midrashic explanation is that there was entrapment in the mouth of Esau, who trapped his father and deceived him by his words.

Rashi 25:28

The Maggid of Dubnow adds a perceptive comment as to why Isaac, but not Rebecca, was deceived. Rebecca grew up with the wily Laban. She knew deception when she saw it. Isaac, by contrast, had grown up with Abraham and Sarah. He only knew total honesty and was thus easily deceived. (Bertrand Russell once commented on the philosopher G. E. Moore, that he only once heard Moore tell a lie, when he asked Moore if he had ever told a lie, and Moore replied, “Yes”).

So the classic answer is that Isaac loved Esau because he simply did not know who or what Esau was. But there is another possible answer: that Isaac loved Esau precisely because he did know what Esau was.

In the early twentieth century someone brought to the great Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak Kook, first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of pre-state Israel, the following dilemma. He had given his son a good Jewish education. He had always kept the commands at home. Now, however, the son had drifted far from Judaism. He no longer kept the commandments. He did not even identify as a Jew. What should the father do? “Did you love him when he was religious?” asked Rav Kook. “Of course,” replied the father. “Well then,” Rav Kook replied, “Now love him even more.”

Sometimes love can do what rebuke cannot. It may be that the Torah is telling us that Isaac was anything but blind as to his elder son’s true nature. But if you have two children, one well-behaved, the other liable to turn out badly, to whom should you devote greater attention? With whom should you spend more time?

It may be that Isaac loved Esau not blindly but with open eyes, knowing that there would be times when his elder son would give him grief, but knowing too that the moral responsibility of parenthood demands that we do not despair of or disown a wayward son.

Did Isaac’s love have an effect on Esau? Yes and no. It is clear that there was a special bond of connection between Esau and Isaac. This was recognised by the Sages:

Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel said: No man ever honoured his father as I honoured my father, but I found that Esau honoured his father even more.

Devarim Rabbah 1:15

Rabbi Shimon derives this from the fact that usually people serve their parents wearing ordinary clothes while they reserve their best for going out. Esau, however, had kept his best clothes in readiness to serve his father the food he had gone out to hunt. That is why Jacob was able to wear them while Esau was still out hunting (Gen. 27:14).

We find, much later in the Torah, that God forbids the Israelites to wage war against Esau’s descendants. He tells Moses:

“Give the people these orders: ‘You are about to pass through the territory of your brothers the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful. Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own.’”

Deut. 2:4-5

And later still Moses commands the Israelites:

“Do not abhor an Edomite [i.e. a descendant of Esau], for he is your brother.”

Deut. 23:8

The Sages saw these provisions as an enduring reward to Esau for the way he honoured his father.

So, was Isaac right or wrong to love Esau? Esau reciprocated the love, but remained Esau, the hunter, the man of the field, not the man to carry forward the demanding covenant with the invisible God and the spiritual sacrifices it called for. Not all children follow the path of their parents. If it was Isaac’s intent that Esau should do so, he failed.

But there are some failures that are honourable. Loving your children, whatever they become, is one, for surely that is how God loves us.

Dr. Mindy Boxer – LED Light Therapy & Acupuncture: A Perfect Pairing

Acupuncture is a proven treatment option when it comes to dealing with a host of health problems, from allergies to depression to chronic pain. Acupuncture is the key to restoring the body’s energy flow and achieving balance. Acupuncturists also may use herbal remedies, acupressure massage, and other modalities like LED light therapy to enhance their treatment and get improved outcomes for their patients.

And while you might be familiar with acupuncture, LED light therapy might be a new or less familiar concept to you. Light therapy is gaining in popularity and a quick search on Amazon or Google brings up a variety of products from pads and flexible panels to masks and handheld devices. Let’s look at what light therapy is and how it can enhance certain acupuncture treatments.

Definition of LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy is known by a few different names including phototherapy, red light therapy or low-level light therapy. It is supported by thousands of peer-reviewed and published clinical research papers from prestigious institutions around the world. You can view a few of those studies here. The rather simple definition of LED light therapy is the application of specific wavelengths of light applied to tissue to obtain beneficial therapeutic results. Think of it as photosynthesis for humans.

In the same way that plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into energy, high intensity light emitting diodes (LEDs) utilizing specific, proven wavelengths of light can trigger a natural biostimulatory effect in human tissue. Research has shown that light emitting diode (LED) or phototherapy can increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, kill acne bacteria, decrease inflammation, improve acne prone skin, skin tone, texture and clarity, decrease under eye wrinkles as well as ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm, and pain associated with arthritis.

Research indicates that cells absorb particles of light (photons) and transform their energy into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the form of energy that cells utilize. The resulting elevation of ATP is then used to power metabolic processes; synthesize DNA, RNA, proteins, enzymes, and other products needed to repair or regenerate cell components; foster mitosis or cell proliferation; and restore homeostasis. Simply put, the LED phototherapy source provides compromised cells with added energy, so the cells performance is enhanced. For example, fibroblast cells will increase collagen and elastin production in connective tissue to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in our skin and increase the rate of wound healing.

Acupuncture Applications Using LED Light Therapy

One of the ways an acupuncturist might incorporate LED light therapy is through a facial acupuncture treatment. I will use acupuncture points on the body to treat any underlying patterns of disharmony and local acupuncture face points to address facial symptoms. To enhance the effects of the acupuncture treatment, they might place a large panel-style LED light device over your face.

There are FDA-cleared, medical-grade light therapy devices on the market that your practitioner has likely vetted for proven treatment success. An average LED treatment cycle is 20-30 minutes.

For facial acupuncture patients, light therapy stimulates micro-circulation in the skin, decreases inflammation, improves lymphatic drainage, softens fine lines and wrinkles, increases the production of collagen and elastin, and delays the signs of aging. Perhaps the best features of LED light therapy from the patient’s perspective are that it is relaxing and rejuvenating, affordable, and there is no downtime post treatment.

Talk to me about the various uses of LED light therapy with acupuncture. It’s also a great option in helping to treat chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, muscle strains and sprains, and joint pain. This perfect pairing just might be the key to restoring balance and getting you back to health. Don’t wait, make an appointment today!

Phyllis Shallman – Pros and Cons of Simple Interest

0

Brace yourself: You’ve been brought here under false pretenses.

This post is not so much about a list of pros and cons as it is about one big pro and one big con concerning simple interest accounts. There are many fine-tooth details you could get into when looking for the best ways to use your money. But when you’re just beginning your journey to financial independence, the big YES and NO below are important to keep in mind. In a nutshell, interest will either cost you money or earn you money. Here’s how…

The Pro of Simple Interest: Paying Back Money

Credit cards, mortgages, car loans, student debt – odds are that you’re familiar with at least one of these loans at this point. When you take out a loan, look for one that lets you pay back your principal amount with simple interest. This means that the overall amount you’ll owe will be interest calculated against the principal, or initial amount, that was loaned to you. And the principle decreases as you pay back the loan. So the sooner you pay off your loan, you’re actually lowering the amount of money in interest that you’re required to pay back as part of your loan agreement.

The Con of Simple Interest: Growing Money

When you want to grow your money, an account based on simple interest is not the way to go. Setting your money aside in an account with compound interest shows infinitely better results for growing your money.

For example, if you wanted to grow $10,000 for 10 years in an account at 3% simple interest, the first few years would look like this:

  • Year 1: $10,000 + 300 = $10,300
  • Year 2: $10,300 + 300 = $10,600
  • Year 3: $10,600 + 300 = $10,900

In a simple interest account, the 3% interest you’ll earn is a fixed sum taken from the principal amount added to the account. And this is the amount that is added annually. After a full 10 years, the amount in the account would be $13,000. Not very impressive.

But what if you put your money in an account that was less “simple”?

If you take the same $10,000 and grow it in an account for 10 years at a 3% rate of interest that compounds, you can see the difference beginning to show in the first few years:

  • Year 1: $10,000 + 300 = $10,300
  • Year 2: $10,300 + 309 = $10,609
  • Year 3: $10,609 + 318 = $10,927

At the end of 10 years, this type of account will have earned more than the simple interest account, without you having to do any extra work! And that’s not even considering adding regular contributions to the account over the years! Just imagine the possibilities if you can get a higher interest rate and combine that with a solid financial plan for your future.?

One final thought: Simple isn’t always the way to go, and that can be a good thing.

Biden: War will stop when Hamas can no longer murder Israelis

0

The US president also confirmed that Israel was trying to prevent civilian casualties as much as possible, and that Hamas was using hospitals as command centers.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

U.S. President Joe Biden made clear Wednesday that he still firmly backs Israel’s position that the ongoing war against Hamas cannot end until its capacity for attacking Israel is destroyed.

When asked at a press briefing whether he had given Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a deadline as to how long the U.S. would support Israel, considering that the Israeli officials said the war could take months or even years “and have created a humanitarian disaster,” Biden answered, “I think it’s going to stop when Hamas no longer maintains the capacity to murder and abuse and just do horrific things to the Israelis. And…at least as of this morning, they still thought they could.”

In possible reference to the reporter’s parroting of Hamas’ unsubstantiated claim of 11,000 dead, Biden acknowledged the use that the terror organization makes of civilians as human shields as a “terrible dilemma” for Israel, and praised its army for trying to avoid civilian casualties.

“The IDF, the Israeli Defense Forces, acknowledges they have an obligation to use as much caution as they can in going after their targets.  It’s not like they’re rushing in the hospital, knocking down doors, and, you know, pulling people aside and shooting people indiscriminately,” he said.

IDF units are currently carefully working through the al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, which Israel has proven to be one of the most important command centers for terrorist operations, emanating from the vast tunnel network Hamas created under the medical center.

U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan had acknowledged Monday that Hamas is “violating the laws of war” by placing its headquarters under a hospital.

“I think that Israel is also taking risks themselves about their folks being killed one-to-one going through these hospital rooms, hospital halls,” Biden continued. “But one thing has been established is that Hamas does have headquarters, weapons, materiel below this hospital and, I suspect, others.”

The IDF has shown video evidence that Hamas used tunnels under the Rantisi Children’s Hospital to hold at least some of the 240 hostages it grabbed on October 7 when almost 3,000 terrorists invaded Gaza envelope communities and massacred 1,200 men, women, children and babies. Terrorist have also launched rockets at Israel from sites right next to hospitals, such as when the Palestinian Islamic Jihad fired one last month that failed and landed in the parking lot of the Al-Ahli Arabi Hospital.

The president clarified that he is not on board with all Israeli goals in the Gaza Strip.

While saying that he is “not a fortune-teller, I can’t tell you how long [the war] is going to last,” he added, “I can tell you I don’t think it ultimately ends until there’s a two-state solution.  I made it clear to the Israelis I think it’s a big mistake to — for them to think they’re going to occupy Gaza and maintain Gaza.  I don’t think that works.”

Israel’s war cabinet stated clearly on Saturday night that after the fall of Hamas, Israel would always retain full security freedom of action in the Gaza Strip and prevent the establishment of new terrorist infrastructures there, which includes the Palestinian Authority, as it has repeatedly proven its support for terrorism.

The war cabinet includes Benny Gantz, the head of the center-left National Unity party.

On the hostage issue, the president said he was “mildly hopeful” regarding some kind of hostage release, saying he’s been “deeply involved” in the negotiations and praising Qatar for its efforts in this area.

Biden was speaking at a press briefing after meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperative conference in California.

Uncensored cut of massacre footage to be screened at UN

0

Ambassador Gilad Erdan hopes the screening will change the minds of his counterparts, who have yet to condemn Hamas.

The Israeli delegation at the United Nations, led by Ambassador Gilad Erdan, will hold a screening of the IDF spokesperson’s uncensored cut of footage from the October 7th massacre at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

The delegation invited UN ambassadors, senior officials, and representatives of the New York City Jewish community to view the screening. Also in attendance will be Mosab Hassan Yousef, the “Green Prince,” who will share his personal story as someone who was raised in the Hamas movement by a father who was one of the organization’s co-founders, and will tell the ambassadors about the Hamas movement and its murderous ideology.

“The UN, which was founded following the Holocaust to prevent horrors and genocide, did not, until this day, condemn Hamas. This is an unprecedented low and moral decay, and I hope that after the screening, at least some of the UN ambassadors and officials will change and understand what moral distortion they are part of,” Ambassador Erdan stated.

“The time has come that the distorted UN, which makes moral comparisons between Israel and Hamas, will see with its own eyes what barbaric murderers they’re caring for and maybe will understand how much it betrays its original purpose.

Pro Palestinian College Professor Arrested in Killing of Paul Kessler

0

A California college professor who defended Hamas was arrested Thursday as a suspect in the murder of Paul Kessler, who tragically died earlier this month after being severely injured by what witnesses say was the result of an assault from Loay Alnaji during a verbal altercation.

Alnaji, a Muslim man from Moorpark, California, in his 50’s who teaches computer science at Ventura Community College in California, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter. Police had asked the public since the incident to provide video evidence of the encounter, because pro-Palestinian protestors denied that any assault took place.

Witnesses say that Alnaji hit Kessler following an altercation at a demonstration which included pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protestors on November 5. Mr. Kessler, 69, then fell and sustained serious injuries to his brain and later succumbed to his wounds the next day.

The Daily Mail reported that on the day of the incident, police raided Alnaji’s home and vehicle.

Alnaji posted a video on social media from Palestinian activist Shahid King Bolsen which compared the Hamas terror group to historic civil rights leaders, saying “If someone asked me to condemn Hamas I would say, what’s the rush? Let’s let history decide.

“You condemned Nelson Mandela until you didn’t, until he was a hero,’ he adds. ‘You condemned Mahatma Gandhi until you didn’t.” He went on to list other figures, including Yassir Arafat, head of the PLO terrorist organization, citing his awarding of a Nobel peace prize. “Let’s wait and see because you might change you mind on this one too,” Bolsen said of Hamas.

At the protest, video published on social media shows antisemitic statements were made on a megaphone, including one protestor who shouted “Hitler should have smashed you.”

Regarding Kessler’s death, Agudath Israel released a statement that it “is appalled, though not surprised, that the overheated, misguided emotions that have roiled many of the demonstrations ostensibly calling for a “free Palestine” but in fact advocating the destruction of Israel has resulted in the violent death of an innocent man.”

Laptop Found in Shifa Hospital Contains Photos of Hostages

0
By Pesach Benson • 16 November, 2023

Jerusalem, 16 November, 2023 (TPS) — Soldiers searching through Gaza’s Shifa Hospital have found a laptop containing videos and photographs of hostages, the Israel Defense Forces announced on Thursday.

“Already now, after scanning some of the buildings, weapons, intelligence materials, including information related to the events of 7/10, military technologies and military equipment, headquarters, means of communication – all belonging to Hamas – have been located,” the IDF said in a statement.

“In the scans, technological means were located, including computers on which information and documentation related to the abductees was found. The finds were transferred for inspection and investigation,” the statement added.

The announcement was made after the IDF allowed a BBC News crew to see part of the hospital. Inside Shifa’s MRI department, IDF Spokesperson Lt.-Col. Jonathan Conricus showed Kalashnikov rifles, bulletproof vests and ammunition. Conricus said other guns and grenades were found before he disclosed the laptop’s discovery.

The images, he said, were taken after Hamas’s Oct. 7 attacks. Conricus added that the laptop also had footage released by the IDF, of several Hamas terrorists captured and imprisoned in Israel discussing the atrocities they participated in.

The military statement said that the soldiers were moving from building to building in the Shifa complex, searching floor by floor without any harm to Shifa’s hundreds of patients, hospital staff or the Israeli soldiers.

“We operate with the understanding that there are many more terrorist infrastructures in the area of the complex that are well buried.

Shifa Hospital, located in the North Rimal neighborhood and boasting 570 beds, is Gaza’s largest medical center, serving the medical needs of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. It was originally built by British authorities in 1946. In the 1980s, Israel renovated and expanded Shifa as part of an initiative to improve Gaza living conditions.

As far back as 2009, the Israeli Security Agency (Shin Bet) reported during the Gaza war of that year that Hamas operatives were hiding in the hospital, and that the basement had become Hamas’s headquarters.

As the Tazpit Press Service reported, in addition to being used to hide Hamas leaders and hostages, the terror group is known to have launched rockets, tortured suspected collaborators and hoarded a half-million liters of fuel in the hospital compound.

Jewish students sue NYU amid rise in campus antisemitism

0

Three Jewish students accuse New York University of creating a hostile environment towards Jews.

New York University (NYU) was sued on Tuesday by three Jewish students who accused the school of creating a hostile environment in which Jewish students are subjected to pervasive antisemitic hatred, discrimination, harassment and intimidation, Reuters reports.

Bella Ingber, Sabrina Maslavi and Saul Tawil said NYU has refused to enforce anti-discrimination policies that it “readily applies” to protect other targets of bigotry, including by allowing chants such as “gas the Jews” and “Hitler was right.”

In a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court, the plaintiffs, all juniors, said antisemitism had been a “growing institutional problem” at NYU even before the war between Israel and Hamas began last month, and has since gotten worse.

They said Jewish students’ complaints are “ignored, slow-walked, or met with gaslighting” by NYU administrators including Linda Mills, who became president in July.

The complaint says that Mills this month dismissed a petition from 4,000 NYU members expressing concern about antisemitism, saying the problem had been blown “out of proportion” and chiding Jewish students as “alarmist.”

John Beckman, an NYU spokesman, said the university takes antisemitism and other forms of hate “extremely seriously,” and was among the first American universities to condemn Hamas’ attack.

“NYU looks forward to setting the record straight, to challenging this lawsuit’s one-sided narrative, to making clear the many efforts NYU has made to combat antisemitism and provide a safe environment for Jewish students and non-Jewish students, and to prevailing in court,” Beckman said in a statement quoted by Reuters.

The lawsuit comes amid an increase in acts of antisemitism on US campuses since the start of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

Last week, a 21-year-old student was charged with assault after he punched one person and slammed the thumb of another during a pro-Israel demonstration at New York University’s main library.

At Cornell University, a professor said he was “exhilarated” by Hamas’ attack on Israel, and declared that “Hamas has challenged the monopoly of violence”. The professor, Russell Rickford, later apologized.

Also at Cornell, a student was criminally charged after allegedly making threats of a mass shooting and antisemitic violence.

In another incident, Jewish students at Cooper Union College in New York City were forced to lock themselves inside the library as a mob of anti-Israeli protesters blocked the doors.

About 40 minutes later, security escorted the students out of the building via a tunnel.

Iceland Evacuates Town As Volcano Eruption Fears Grow

0

Residents of a fishing town in southwestern Iceland left their homes Saturday after increasing concern about a potential volcanic eruption caused civil defense authorities to declare a state of emergency in the region.

Police decided to evacuate Grindavik after recent seismic activity in the area moved south toward the town and monitoring indicated that a corridor of magma, or semi-molten rock, now extends under the community, Iceland’s Meteorological Office said. The town of 3,400 is on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of the capital, Reykjavik.

“At this stage, it is not possible to determine exactly whether and where magma might reach the surface,” the Meteorological Office said.

Authorities also raised their aviation alert to orange, indicating an increased risk of a volcanic eruption. Volcanic eruptions pose a serious hazard to aviation because they can spew highly abrasive ash high into the atmosphere, where it can cause jet engines to fail, damage flight control systems and reduce visibility.

A major eruption in Iceland in 2010 caused widespread disruption to air travel between Europe and North America, costing airlines an estimated $3 billion as they canceled more than 100,000 flights.

The evacuation comes after the region was shaken by hundreds of small earthquakes every day for more than two weeks as scientists monitor a buildup of magma some 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) underground.

Concern about a possible eruption increased in the early hours of Thursday when a magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit the area, forcing the internationally known Blue Lagoon geothermal resort to close temporarily.

The seismic activity started in an area north of Grindavik where there is a network of 2,000-year-old craters, geology professor Pall Einarrson, told Iceland’s RUV. The magma corridor is about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) long and spreading, he said.

“The biggest earthquakes originated there, under this old series of craters, but since then it (the magma corridor) has been getting longer, went under the urban area in Grindavík and is heading even further and towards the sea,” he said.
