Hurricane Ida winds hit 150 mph ahead of Louisiana strike

0
Emergency officials grappled with opening shelters for evacuees despite COVID-19 risks; New Orleans hospitals already full of corona patients.

By Associated Press

Hurricane Ida rapidly grew in strength early Sunday, becoming a dangerous Category 4 hurricane just hours before hitting the Louisiana coast while emergency officials in the region grappled with opening shelters for displaced evacuees despite the risks of spreading the coronavirus.

As Ida moved through some of the warmest ocean water in the world in the northern Gulf of Mexico, its top winds grew by 45 mph (72 kph) to 150 mph (230 kph) in five hours. The system was expected to make landfall Sunday afternoon, set to arrive on the exact date Hurricane Katrina ravaged Louisiana and Mississippi 16 years earlier.

Ida threatened a region already reeling from a resurgence of COVID-19 infections, due to low vaccination rates and the highly contagious delta variant.

New Orleans hospitals planned to ride out the storm with their beds nearly full, as similarly stressed hospitals elsewhere had little room for evacuated patients. And shelters for those fleeing their homes carried an added risk of becoming flashpoints for new infections.

On Grand Isle, where Ida appeared to be heading for landfall, the ocean steadily rose as increasingly bigger waves churned Sunday morning.

In New Orleans, where the worst weather is expected later, a light rain fell. Cars were parked on the median, which locals call neutral ground in New Orleans, because its a few feet higher and can protect against potential flooding.

Ida intensified so swiftly that New Orleans officials said there was no time to organize a mandatory evacuation of its 390,000 residents. Mayor LaToya Cantrell urged residents to leave voluntarily. Those who stayed were warned to prepare for long power outages amid sweltering heat.

Nick Mosca was walking his dog, like most of those who were out.

“I’d like to be better prepared. There’s a few things I’m thinking we could have done. But this storm came pretty quick, so you only have the time you have,” Mosca said.

Gov. John Bel Edwards vowed Saturday that Louisiana’s “resilient and tough people” would weather the storm. He also noted shelters would operate with reduced capacities “to reflect the realities of COVID.”

Edwards said Louisiana officials were already working to find hotel rooms for many evacuees so that fewer had to stay in mass shelters. He noted that during last year’s hurricane season, Louisiana found rooms for 20,000 people.

“So, we know how to do this,” Edwards said. “I hope and pray we don’t have to do it anywhere near that extent.”

In coastal Gulfport, Mississippi, a Red Cross shelter posted signs displaying directions for evacuees along with warnings about COVID-19. With skies still sunny, only a handful of people had shown up Saturday evening.

Shelter manager Barbara Casterlin said workers were required to wear face masks. Evacuees were encouraged to do the same. Anyone who refuses will be sent to an isolated area, she said, and so will people who are sick.

“We’re not checking vaccinations,” Casterlin said, “but we are doing temperature checks two or three times a day.”President Joe Biden approved emergency declarations for Louisiana and Mississippi ahead of Ida’s arrival.

Comparisons to the Aug. 29, 2005, landfall of Katrina weighed heavily on residents bracing for Ida. A Category 3 storm, Katrina was blamed for 1,800 deaths as it demolished oceanfront homes in Mississippi and caused levee breaches and catastrophic flooding in New Orleans.

Officials stressed that the levee and drainage systems protecting the city had been much improved since Katrina. But they cautioned flooding was still possible with up to 24 inches (61 centimeters) of rain forecast in some areas.

Edwards said 5,000 National Guard troops were being staged in 14 Louisiana parishes for search and rescue efforts. And 10,000 linemen were on standby to respond to electrical outages.

Ida posed a threat far beyond New Orleans. A hurricane warning was issued for nearly 200 miles (320 kilometers) of Louisiana’s coastline, from Intracoastal City south of Lafayette to the Mississippi state line. A tropical storm warning was extended to the Alabama-Florida line.

Meteorologist Jeff Masters, who flew hurricane missions for the government and founded Weather Underground, said Ida is forecast to move through “the just absolute worst place for a hurricane.”

The Interstate 10 corridor between New Orleans and Baton Rouge is a critical hub of the nation’s petrochemical industry, lined with oil refineries, natural gas terminals and chemical manufacturing plants. Entergy, Louisiana’s major electricity provider, operates two nuclear power plants along the Mississippi River.

A U.S. Energy Department map of oil and gas infrastructure shows scores of low-lying sites in the storm’s projected path that are listed as potentially vulnerable to flooding.

Phyllis Shallman -Passive Income Requires Work

0

“I want passive income!”, said the community of struggling entrepreneurs (and retirees).

“But what exactly is passive income?” they asked. A simple Google search revealed thousands of articles with a common theme—passive income is money you make while you sleep!

But is passive income really possible, or does it just live in the dreams of people looking for a way to make money without working?

To answer that question, let’s look at what passive income is (and isn’t). Then you can see if it will work for you!

Passive income, generally speaking, is a product or service that requires an upfront investment of time, effort, or wealth to create.

Examples include…

– Rental properties that require wealth to purchase, and are cared for by a property manager while creating rental income – Books, music, and courses that required time and creativity to create and now generate income without regular upkeep – Investing wealth in a business as a silent partner and taking a slice of their revenue

Can those income sources generate cash flow while you sleep? Of course! But notice that all of those opportunities require either work or resources that can only be acquired by work.

Does that mean you shouldn’t prioritize passive income sources? No! They can sometimes provide the financial stability you need.

Just don’t expect a passive income stream to effortlessly appear in your lap.

Remember, there is no such thing as free money. All wealth building opportunities require time, effort, and energy to reach their full potential.

If you want to learn more about creating passive income sources, contact me. We can review your talents, your situation, and your dreams to determine smart strategies for developing passive income.

Bulgaria 12th Nation Boycotting Durban Declaration Anniversary Ceremonies at UN

0
By Gil Tanenbaum/TPS • 26 August, 2021

Jerusalem, 26 August, 2021 (TPS) — The Foreign Ministry of Bulgaria has declared that the nation will not participate in the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Durban Declaration.

Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry stated in a Tweet that the country, “will not participate in the UNGA High-level meeting on the Durban Declaration & Plan of Action. Given the history of the process, there’s a risk that the forum could be misused for anti-Semitic propaganda We stay committed to fighting racism in all its forms and manifestations.”

Bulgaria is now the 12th nation to boycott the proceedings. The others are France, Israel, the US, Canada, Australia, Germany, the UK, Hungary, Austria, Netherlands and the Czech Republic

Next month the U.N. will hold the official ceremonies for the opening of its 76th session. Events have been planned at the same time for the “celebration” of the 20th anniversary of the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, and of the Durban Declaration and Program of Action.

The Durban Declaration was supposed to be a condemnation of racism and antisemitism. But as is usual with the U.N., many delegates at the conference tried to turn it into another declaration equating Zionism with racism and accusing Israel of genocide. And there were even Holocaust deniers in attendance.

The countries currently boycotting the ceremonies have all pointed to concerns that there will be a repeat of such anti-Semitic and anti-Israel activities. There were at previous anniversaries of the Declaration.

When the French announced that they would not be participating, French President Emmanuel Macron’s office issued a statement saying, “Concerned by a history of anti-Semitic remarks made at the UN conference on racism, known as the Durban Conference, the President of the Republic has decided that France will not participate in the follow-up conference to be held this year.”

When, in June, the U.K. announced its decision not to participate in the event a government spokesperson stated, “Following historic concerns regarding antisemitism, the UK has decided not to attend the UN’s Durban Conference anniversary event later this year.”

RFK Assassin Sirhan Wins Parole With Support Of 2 Kennedys

0

SAN DIEGO (AP) — U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s assassin was granted parole Friday after two of RFK’s sons spoke in favor of Sirhan Sirhan’s release and prosecutors declined to argue he should be kept behind bars.

The decision was a major victory for the 77-year-old prisoner, though it does not assure his release.

The ruling by the two-person panel at Sirhan’s 16th parole hearing will be reviewed over the next 90 days by the California Parole Board’s staff. Then it will be sent to the governor, who will have 30 days to decide whether to grant it, reverse it or modify it.

Douglas Kennedy, who was a toddler when his father was gunned down in 1968, said he was moved to tears by Sirhan’s remorse and he should be released if he’s not a threat to others.

“I’m overwhelmed just by being able to view Mr. Sirhan face to face,” he said. “I think I’ve lived my life both in fear of him and his name in one way or another. And I am grateful today to see him as a human being worthy of compassion and love.”

The New York senator and brother of President John F. Kennedy was a Democratic presidential candidate when he was gunned down June 6, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles moments after delivering a victory speech in the pivotal California primary.

Sirhan, who was convicted of first-degree murder, has said he doesn’t remember the killing.

His lawyer, Angela Berry, argued that the board should base its decision on who Sirhan is today.

Prosecutors declined to participate or oppose his release under a policy by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, a former police officer who took office last year after running on a reform platform.

Gascón, who said he idolized the Kennedys and mourned RFK’s assassination, believes the prosecutors’ role ends at sentencing and they should not influence decisions to release prisoners.

Biden Says Second Kabul Airport Attack Likely In 24-36 Hours

0

President Joe Biden warned that conditions in Kabul during the final days of the U.S. evacuation remain “extremely dangerous” and said his military commanders informed him during a briefing Saturday morning that an another attack is “highly likely in the next 24-36 hours.”

“I directed them to take every possible measure to prioritize force protection, and ensured that they have all the authorities, resources and plans to protect our men and women on the ground,” Biden said.

Thirteen U.S. military personnel were killed and 18 other American service members were wounded in a suicide bombing Thursday outside the gates of the Kabul airport, where the U.S. has been running its evacuation operation. On Friday, the U.S. launched a retaliatory strike that killed two members of ISIS-K, the Islamic State offshoot that has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Biden said the operation was led by U.S. Central Command leader Kenneth McKenzie and that it “was not the last” against the group responsible for the airport bombing.

“We will continue to hunt down any person involved in that heinous attack and make them pay,” Biden said.

Gulf Coast braces for Sunday arrival of Hurricane Ida, potentially a Category 4 storm

0

By Aya Elamroussi, Haley Brink, Ray Sanchez and Alaa Elassar, CNN

(CNN) Hurricane Ida is expected to rapidly strengthen before pummeling Louisiana on Sunday, forcing evacuations in New Orleans and the surrounding coastal region on the eve of the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

On Saturday, Ida was moving away from Cuba and into the Gulf of Mexico, where it is expected to intensify over the next 24 to 36 hours prior to landfall across the Louisiana coast on Sunday afternoon or evening. Recent satellite imagery showed the storm has already strengthened.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on Saturday warned residents planning to voluntarily evacuate — which she recommended — to get out now.
“Time is not on our side. It’s just rapidly growing. It’s intensifying,” the mayor said at a news conference, referring to Ida. “If you’re voluntarily evacuating our city, now is the time to leave — you need to do so immediately. If you’re planning to ride it out, again, make sure that you’re able to hunker down.”
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Ida “will be one of the strongest hurricanes that hit anywhere in Louisiana since at least the 1850s.”
“This is a very large storm,” Edwards told reporters Saturday, noting that the hurricane could span about 150 miles east and west from the storm’s center.

“I don’t want folks who are further inland to be caught off guard.”
Over 4,000 soldiers and airmen with the Louisiana National Guard are currently mobilized and another 5,000 will be prepared by the time the storm makes landfall, Edwards told CNN Saturday afternoon.
“You just have a few more hours really to prepare,” Edwards said.
“Where you go to bed tonight, you need to be prepared to ride out the storm and the storm is going to be very severe,” he told those who are not evacuating.

‘An extremely dangerous major hurricane’

Ida is anticipated to reach at least Category 4 strength before landfall, the National Hurricane Center said, maintaining its earlier forecast. Tropical storm-force winds could reach New Orleans about 8 a.m. Sunday before the storm makes landfall that afternoon or evening west of New Orleans, near Houma and Morgan City. Late Saturday afternoon, meteorologists at the center said the storm appears to have begun its intensification phase.
Hurricane Ida remains a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 mph with stronger gusts, according to the 11 p.m. National Hurricane Center update. Rapid strengthening is forecast during the next 12 to 24 hours and Ida is expected to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane when it makes landfall along the Louisiana coast on Sunday.”Ida is expected to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane when it approaches the northern Gulf Coast on Sunday,” National Hurricane Center forecasters said Saturday morning. At 2 p.m. ET, the storm had strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph.
Officials throughout the state implored people to evacuate, with some issuing mandatory orders to do so. News footage from the area showed traffic backed up heading out of New Orleans.

Tropical Storm Ida Is Strengthening and Forecast To Slam Gulf Coast As A Major Hurricane Sunday

0

Tropical Storm Ida is strengthening in the Caribbean Sea and is forecast to hammer the northern U.S. Gulf Coast as a major hurricane this weekend with life-threatening storm surge, dangerous rainfall flooding, potentially devastating winds and tornadoes.

The National Hurricane Center has just upgraded parts of western Cuba to a hurricane warning, including the Isle of Youth and the provinces of Pinar del Rio and Artemisa.

A hurricane watch continues in effect from Cameron, Louisiana, to the Mississippi-Alabama state line, including the New Orleans metro area. Hurricane watches are typically issued 48 hours in advance of when tropical storm-force winds are expected to arrive since these conditions make it difficult to make preparations for a hurricane, once they begin.

A storm surge watch is also in effect from the Texas-Louisiana state line to the Alabama-Florida state line, including Vermilion Bay, Lake Borgne, Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas and Mobile Bay. This means dangerous flooding from storm surge is possible within the next 48 hours.

Finally, a tropical storm watch has been issued near the Alabama coast, where tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours.

Interests near the coast from Louisiana to Alabama should monitor Ida’s progress closely and make hurricane preparations. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says there is an increasing risk for hurricane-force winds, flooding rainfall and life-threatening storm surge Sunday and Monday, especially in Louisiana.

Current Status

Tropical Storm Ida is located in the western Caribbean Sea approaching western Cuba, moving northwest.

Bands of heavy rain continue to soak parts of Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Cuba.

Thunderstorms continue to erupt near Ida’s center, typically a sign of a strengthening tropical cyclone.

Ida became the ninth named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season late Thursday afternoon while located between Grand Cayman and Jamaica, based on measurements by a U.S. Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter mission.

Biden gave Taliban list of US personnel, Afghan allies names: Report

0
Biden administration officials have defended their close cooperation with the Taliban, noting that it was essential for the safe evacuation of U.S. troops from Kabul.

By Tobias Siegal, World Israel News

President Joe Biden and his administration are under fire after reportedly providing Taliban forces in Afghanistan the details of of U.S. military personnel and Afghan allies.

According to a report by Politico published Thursday, U.S. officials in Kabul gave the Taliban a detailed list of names of American citizens, green card holders and Afghan allies, in order to allow them access to a certain area of the Kabul airport and expedite the ongoing evacuation efforts from the country.

The move has prompted heavy criticism by lawmakers and military officials alike, especially after a double suicide bombing killed over 100 people, including 13 U.S. military personnel, and injured dozens of others at the Kabul airport.

“Basically, they just put all those Afghans on a kill list,” a U.S. defense official told Politico. “It’s just appalling and shocking and makes you feel unclean.”

When asked to comment on the issue during a Thursday press conference addressing the attacks at Kabul, Biden indicated that the U.S. has on different occasions provided the Taliban with information about American citizens and U.S. Afghan allies.

“There have been occasions when our military has contacted their military counterparts in the Taliban and said this, for example, this bus is coming through with X number of people on it, made up of the following group of people. We want you to let that bus or that group through,” Biden said. “So, yes there have been occasions like that.

“I can’t tell you with any certitude that there’s actually been a list of names,” he noted, adding that “There may have been … It could very well have happened.”

Such a list would point to a potential miscalculation by the White House regarding the necessary scope of cooperation with the Taliban, considering recent reports that have indicated that Taliban dead squads have been going door-to-door in search of Afghan collaborators and U.S. allies.

Biden administration officials have defended their close cooperation with the Taliban, noting that it was essential for the safe evacuation of U.S. troops from Kabul. “They had to do that because of the security situation the White House created by allowing the Taliban to control everything outside the airport,” a U.S. official told Politico.

Biden has stood behind the decision to allow the Taliban to secure the airport. When asked about the issue he clarified that while “no one trusts them … it’s a matter of mutual self-interest,” arguing that it is in the interest of the Taliban that ISIS-K, the affiliate of the Islamic State in Afghanistan, “does not metastasize beyond what it is.”

Elli Schwarcz – Teshuvah: Step by Step

0

With Elul well underway and Rosh Hashanah rapidly approaching, let’s spend some time discussing the meaning and function of teshuvah, repentance.

Like any Mitzvah, teshuvah has technical requirements that must be met in order for it to be properly fulfilled. Just as the matzah for Pesach must be prepared and baked in a very specific manner in order to be used at the Seder- and especially so that it does itself become chametz!- so must our repentance be manufactured according to specific guidelines, to ensure that our efforts are crowned with success.

Before delving into technicalities, though, here’s teshuvah’s presentation in the Torah:

For this Mitzvah that I command you today is not beyond you, and it is not distant….

…For this matter is very close to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.

-Nitzavim, 30: 11,14

“This Mitzvah” refers to Teshuvah…
-Ramban

Rabbi Tzvi Einstadter of Baltimore makes an interesting observation on this passage. Imagine a person who’s asked to pick up an object from the table. The friend making the request does not need to encourage his friend by saying, “Listen, you don’t need to use a crane to pick up the pencil; it’s really light, and you can use just one finger.”
That’s because the perception of the one doing the lifting is usually fairly accurate, as he knows roughly how heavy the item in question is. Therefore, there’s no need to dispel any major misconceptions. In our own exaggerated example, one’s assessment of the pencil would not be so poor as to necessitate the ruling out of heavy machinery.

Why, then, asks Rabbi Einstadter, did Moshe Rabbeinu spoke to B’nei Israel in exactly such unusual terms? As we saw, first he assured the people that Teshuva was not completely beyond them… and then explained that it was in fact ‘very close’ and accessible to them! Seemingly, one of these teachings- either that repentance is not beyond us, or that it is actually well within reach- is an unnecessary exaggeration!

Observes Rav Einstadter: it must be that repentance can be viewed in two completely different ways. True, the simple act of lifting an object does not lend itself to wildly differing assumptions. Teshuva, however, is apparently different. Repentance does seem exceedingly difficult to many of us… even though at its core it is really an ‘easy’ process.

This being the case, let’s now try to understand what B’nei Israel’s misconception about repentance- then and now, thousands of years later- might be rooted in.

To understand this, we circle back to what we mentioned earlier: returning to Hashem must be carried out with a specific process. Now, precisely what steps must one take in doing teshuvah?

Rambam lists the necessary components that the returnee must do*:

1. Abandon the sin, accepting to not repeat it. ‘He Who knows the thoughts of people’ should ‘be able to testify’ that this is ‘a new person’, who will not sin this way again. One who resolves to be better without first stopping to sin is like an impure person who immerses in the Mikveh- while still holding a dead rodent.

  1. Regret the sin. One must feel remorseful for having acted against Hashem.
  2. Confess the sin. One must verbally express to Hashem that he regrets having sinned, does not want to sin again, and asks for forgiveness.

On the surface, none of this appears very easy to do. Genuinely deciding to break or change one’s ego, desires, and habits overnight seems close to impossible! Could all of this really be required by the Torah of the average person?

The great Mussar master Rav Yisrael Salanter (Or Yisrael, Letter 6) teaches many fundamental ideas relating to repentance. First, we must realize that two people who commit the same sin may be given two different sentences in the Heavenly Court. Why? Well, for starters, we know that one who performs a Mitzvah is rewarded not simply for the accomplishment of the good deed, but also in accordance with the challenges he overcame in carrying it out:

“According to the pain is the reward.”

-Pirkei Avot, 5:26

Someone who resists sinning despite the challenges he faces will receive more reward in the World to Come than one for whom this test always came easy. One who undergoes difficulties in order to perform a positive Mitzvah is treated likewise.

Some commandments are naturally easy- not to murder, for example- and some are usually more difficult to obey- such as not speaking Lashon Horah, slander. On top of this, a person’s inborn characteristics, environment, and circumstances can all impact his or her difficulty level in fulfilling Mitzvot.

Now, being that reward is in accordance with what a person endured to do the right thing, it turns out that certain commandments are more severe than we would imagine. Although murder is certainly a huge sin, one doesn’t usually receive reward for not killing his friend during an argument- after all, he’s not really tempted to do so.

If this is the case, then by extension, one who violates an ‘easy Mitzvah’ is punished severely-even if it is not a crucial a Mitzvah as some others- because he has no excuse.

Continuing this train of though. Rav Salanter explains that just as there are many levels of Torah obligation- such as Torah laws, Rabbinic decrees, and custom- each sin and good deed can be said to contain many levels in its own right. (One may fulfill a Mitzvah in its basic way, or in all its full detail. One may have pure intentions as he performs a Mitzvah, earning great reward, or may really do so for honor or reward, which is fine. A person may even have negative, unacceptable intentions when doing the Mitzvah. These are but some of the many things Hashem knows and considers in judgment as He views our actions.)
As such, a sin that someone committed can be seen in levels and parts as well. If he spoke Lashon Hara eighty times, God forbid, over the course of the year, his large, repetitive sin in fact contains many individual moments.

A person who experienced tremendous anger or jealousy can be said to have sinned in many smaller ‘units’ of negative feelings. Included in the great kindness of Hashem in giving us the opportunity to repent altogether is that He also allows-actually demands- that our repentance be done in small stages. One who tries to do ‘complete’ repentance by correcting and reversing his deeds without building up slowly to the goal is making a tragic mistake. Because making some huge paradigm shifts in one’s persona demands so much of a person’s ego and self-control, it is axiomatic that one who ‘jumps’ will fall.

Because a sudden overhaul is beyond the sinner, it must be that the Torah requires us to do repent differently- namely, in gradual, deliberate steps.

How can one fulfill his obligation in repentance, though, if he cannot resolve to totally change right away? Isn’t this still tantamount to immersing while in contact with the source of impurity? It seems that this question is predicated on a faulty assumption: viewing the dead rodent as the totality of his sins. However, the rodent represents something more nuanced and subtle: the sinner’s willingness to violate God’s will. Once a person shows that he truly doesn’t want to be a sinner anymore, and he takes logical steps within the Teshuva process, he has repented on one level, in one unit, of his sin. Rather than changing ‘completely’ from his entire record of sin, he can change completely from one full unit of his sin. Thus, his Teshuva is full, so long as he is acting with the end goal of spiritual perfection on his radar, as the segment he is repairing represents his entire sin, as it were.

We’ll end for now with a few amazing words that fit perfectly with this idea…

Return, Yisrael, until Hashem you God, for you have stumbled in your sins
-Hoshe’a, 14:2

Why does the verse speak of returning “until” Hashem, rather than to Him?
This seems to be what the Eben Ezra bases his words on…

Bit by bit, “until” he ‘reaches’ Hashem.

-Eben Ezra

-That is, the verse is showing us that returning does not need to mean arriving at the destination right now. Rather, the journey is itself an accomplishment, and so the verse exhorts us to engage in returning, while never forgetting the ultimate end goal.

We can now answer Rabbi Einstadter’s question. The natural tendency is to view repentance as requiring a total and instant personal overhaul- and that it is therefore too difficult. However, the truth is that we must work instead in segments, because otherwise there can be no teshuvah. Teshuva is really quite close to us after all.

May we repent properly and realistically!

* See Rambam, Laws of Teshuvah, for how he organizes, lists, and explains these laws.
